I ordered this through the Vine programme thinking it would be slightly bigger than our current cheap living room trash-bin size shredder. It appears I didn't read the description properly, because what actually arrived was MUCH bigger than expected. Well, I went back to the product description and realised that this model is suitable for small offices of around 10 people.First impressions were that this was a proper shredder. Build quality was excellent. The bin was easy to remove and secure. The shredder head extremely heavy as you'd expect for a commercial type shredder.Shredding - The unit shreds cross cut that as well as being more secure helps reduce the volume that the paper takes up compared to strips. You can do 18 pages at a time and the machine chugs through these without any sounds of strain. The unit was not the quietest, but also not the loudest. I haven't tried it with CDs, credit cards or paperclips, but I have little doubt it will do well with all three.Safety - The machine has many safety features that protect both the machine and yourself from harm. There is firstly the anti-paper jam mechanism which is handily highlighted through the light strip on the top of the unit. Anything requiring your attention will lead the unit to flash orange. This includes when paper is jammed, if the bin unit is not secured properly, or when the unit has overheated. All the features worked well and as expected. I tried shredding without the bin in place, and the unit refused to operate as expected. There are back-forward manual buttons that do not work whilst the unit is in auto mode unless there is actually a paper jam. Smart.Drawbacks - The unit motor seems to overheat very quickly. We were shredding a few piles of papers and doing the max of around 18 sheets at a time continuously. The unit appeared to overheat at least half a dozen times in the 30 mins or so we were using it. Plus it took around 5 mins for the unit to become operable again. So if high volume is a necessity, this might not be the model for you. Granted, we had a big stack of financial documents to shred that had been saved up since our old shredder wasn't working properly. Lastly the power cable is only around 1 metre long and is located on the shredder unit so if your socket is on the floor, this reduces the actual distance you can position the unit from the power supply. I found this pretty restrictive. Granted this shouldn't be much of an issue in a modern office, but in a less conventional space with either limited power supplies or more of a home power layout, it can be tricky to find both a suitably sized space to locate the machine that is also close to a power supply. I guess the positive is that you're unlikely to have a trailing wire unless using an extension socket, which is as a result of the short cable more likely and now a trip hazard.Positives: Machine is quick and cuts extremely well. The front of the bin has a nice plexiglass window to view how full the shredder is, with a little bit of a gap, that I presume is to help the unit dissipate heat. The machine is extremely straightfoward to operate. Switch into Auto and the green light means you're ready to shred.Maintenance - As part of the product package, you receive a brown paper bag that can be used to catch the shredded paper and makes simplifies the process of emptying. You also get an oil sheet. My guess is that you use this to lubricate/sharpen the blades after a period of time. However there is no mention in the manual of how to use this (despite how straightforward it might appear to be!) or how often an oil sheet should be used. Every 6 months, every year? Granted every office has a different workload but it would have been nice to have some acknowledgement of how often the unit blades need maintenance. Something that was massively overlooked was that once you've used this brown paper bag and oil sheet, there is absolutely no advice on how to order more. When you buy food mixer, your manual often has directions on suppliers of spare parts, repair service centres etc. The manual included includes nothing but machine operation. A big oversight in my mind.

Note: The manufacturer supplied a review sample for evaluation, the opinion of the product is my own personal viewWith a form factor resembling a domestic waste bin this model is aimed at a smaller office (just over 2 feet high) - Rexel say up to 10 people it's seems well equipped for dealing with higher volumes due to the larger than normal sheet shred capacity of around 18 sheets and respectable bin capacity of 34 litres (approx. 240 pages)Controls on the top panel are via buttons the central power one and a manual reverse/forward a long light stretches across the top behind this powered on running normal this is green, changing to orange if there is a problem (bin not secured properly or overheating/jam)this is a useful visual indicator to have. Bit of weight to this unit but it's not so massive you couldn't easily find a space for it in a room. The bin is emptied by pulling it out it's not practical to remove the top on this (too heavy) a large clear window shows you have full the bin is very easy to see this from a distance.Performance was strong it chews through paper quickly and fairly quietly too not the quietest I've heard but unlikely to annoy even in a quiet office. This takes CD's as well as paper clips and staples smaller models rarely accept CD's this could be a bonus if you shred media frequently. In testing I found the unit would shred for me for a full 10 minutes of "constant" full load shredding (18 sheets per load) that's quite a lot of paper and a 6-7 minute cool down was required. I think it's unlikely to be pushed to that level even in an office environment (more likely batches of paper in shorter bursts) Cutting is rated to P4 that's small and secure and I have no safety concerns either inlet slot is slim and fingers can't fit in and it auto cuts out if the bin is pulled out.Maintenance is minimal though there is a supplied oil sheet this should be used every 6 months or possibly slightly more frequently. Laminated paper is to be avoided as this heats up melts and can clog the cutters something that is normal for any shredder product. Any weaker points? The 1 metre cable could use an extra 0.5 metres length you will probably need an extension though many offices will have this already. For the intended market (business use or higher volumes) this would work well for an school or other organisation too (it's overkill for a home user hunt out smaller models). Build is solid with firm plastics it should hold up to daily use no problems and with a larger slot capacity will save time shredding documents.

I have got through far too many domestic shredders. Clearly I need a more heavy duty one, and this is it. The manufacturer says that it is designed for a small office of up to 10 people.Though it costs much more than a domestic shredder, as they say "buy cheap, buy twice" - to be more accurate, in a shredder's case, "buy a small motor, pay twice".The heavy duty motor means that it can shred more sheets of paper in one go - up to 18 - and shreds for longer before overheating. I would not put 18 sheets through at a time as I have had far too many problems with shredders - I would rather put half that amount through twice and have it last longer. If it overheats,it cuts out and you have to wait for the orange light to go out before you can use it again. That is standard with shredders. The relevance is that this happens less often due to the heavy duty motor. It hasn't happened to me yet.The mains cable is short - nothing that can't be resolved with an extension cable. This is a cross-cut shredder i.e. it cuts longitudinally and horizontally, which makes it more secure. The bin is 34 litres and holds up to 240 shredded sheets - half a ream of paper. There's a plastic window in the front so you can see how full it is.Included with the shredder is an oil sheet. This is critical. You simply shred it at regular intervals (so you will need to buy more). If you do not use it then, in due course of time, shredded paper will, instead of falling into the bin, continue to go round in a circle. In other words it will stick to the blades and wrap around them like a plastic sheet around a spinning car axle. That will jam an axle and that is precisely what it does to the axle holding the blades. If you can unjam that I take my hat off to you because I couldn't. It is the mother of all paper jams and has been how every one of my previous shredders has died, without exception. At that time I had never heard of oil sheets. So, please use the oil sheets. My shredders used to last between 1 and 2 years before dying - one didn't even last 12 months. Therefore I would use an oil sheet once every 6 or so months (obviously it depends on how heavily it is being used).Shredding too many sheets at any one time seems to increase the chance of your shredder dying in such a manner, which is why I have learned to shred less than the recommended number of sheets at any one time. This is a good shredder.

Having tested this shredder I would say owing to its size and performance its perfect for a small office or home office, but note it’s large if using at home and measures roughly 40cm wide, 33cm deep and 60cm tall.First impressions were great, it’s sturdy and very well built (weighing just over 15kg!!), and I personally really like the design. You can feed up to 18 sheets of ‘regular’ thickness paper into the top of the machine at the time and it shreds with ease and is relatively quiet too, using it infrequently this shredder won’t miss a beat, but if continuously feeding paper through it soon starts to get warm. Not wanting to waste an entire tree I actually ran out of paper whilst testing it but after five minutes continuous feeding the top of the shredder had warmth and so if you’re looking to continually shred paper in your office this isn’t the machine for you.In the box the shredder comes with a brown paper bag for the bin and an oil sheet (to use when you notice the performance of your shredder deteriorating).I have not ordered any more brown paper bags, instead I am opting to not use them and just empty the shreddings directly out of the bin once I get through this first bag.The shredder can take paper clips, staples absolutely no problem, I even chucked a couple of old CDs through and it ate through them without any hassle, so it’s great if you have any sensitive data on disks to get through.Worth noting this shredder cross cuts paper to “security level 4”. This security level is an EU standard guideline where level 1 is the most basic strip cutting, and level 7 the highest. Level 3 is officially recommended for “highly sensitive documents and personal data subject to high protection requirements”.All in all this shredder is perfect if you need a high security level shredder that takes up to 18 sheets at a time with complete ease; if you need to shred more volume than this it may be worth looking into a flat bed shredder.I was kindly provided a sample by the manufacturer to review; the opinions expressed here are entirely my own view of this shredder.

I've been through a number of 'cheapo' shredders in the past, but they have all failed in one way or another !!The first thing that strikes you about this Rexel shredder is it's size, it is fairly large but seeing as it is to be used in a home office then it's not really a problem. The build quality of this shredder looks very good and should provide years of service. Now the acid test was 13 sheets of 80gsm paper, this shredders maximum capacity, it chewed them up no problem at all and is fairly quiet whilst doing so too which is a bonus, the paper is cut into tiny strips that make it impossible to decipher any information after shredding, you don't have to worry about paper clips or staples as these are no problem for this powerful shredder .CD's are again munched up into small pieces, something one of my previous shredders claimed to do but failed after around half a dozen times of use!! This shredder will also shred credit cards too.The Mercury REX1323 is fully automatic, it will even perform maintenance and unjam itself too, there is a large LED on the top of the shredder that indicates mode function, it uses a traffic light of red-amber-green, again a very useful system. The shredded paper is stored in a large pull out drawer, there is a bag supplied with the shredder that fit neatly into draw so that when you empty it you just lift the bag out of the draw and depose of the shredded paper in you recycle bin. I used cheap bin liners in my old shredders and will probably do so in this Rexel model too. I did notice that the bin has to be pushed back perfectly for the shredder to function, not really a problem but more of an annoyance.Rexel have aimed this shredder at the small office/home office user and for me personally it is ideal and will hopefully provide many years of reliable shredding.EDIT...............This Rexel shredder has completely died , no lights nothing.

Having saved up various items suitable for shredding we had a test this afternoon. First off the machine is so easy to operate. It really is a case of plug it in, switch the power switch at the top, centre, back to on. Press the centre button marked "auto" and the mouth will light up green and ready to use.You are provided with one bag and it is best to put this in immediately as collects the shredding and it keeps all neat and tidy. You can if you wish empty this bag out into a larger bag for collection with your weekly recycling or office collection point. The other thing to mention is that this large machine makes much less noise than a small domestic shredder so ideal for use at office or home. The added bonus is that it takes up to 18 sheets of paper and can do card and even CDs but we have not done CDs yet as with another make of shredder we had some problems. Looking at the mechanism that this shredder uses I think it will cope with CDs and credit cards. The shredder is very compact and fits neatly under a work surface so took up less space than we thought.Having used a very similar model at work they are top end and normally very reliable provided you follow the advice given by Rexel. Do not jam things into the opening start off with a small amount and judge the volume it will do subject to the maximum sheet guidelines. You get a sheet to oil the shredding mechanism and we used to put them through every 6 months or so as we were using the unit every 3 days or so. You will need to get some bags and oil sheets for forward use.Price wise this is a machine designed for an office and the price is what you would expect to pay for a top end machine. All told a neat and fairly quiet machine that reduces waste to tiny bits...brilliant

This is a large floor standing office shredder, ideal for a small to medium sized business. It has a massive collection drawer held firmly in place with magnetic catches and the shredder will only operate when the drawer is properly closed. Taking 18 sheets of paper at a time I would imagine this is ideal for most people’s needs, being capable of dealing with staples is also a bonus. After simply plugging it in when you are presented with a green light you are good to go, testing it with paper the cross cut end shredding's are very small and would be no use to anyone trying to piece them back together (ideal for sensitive documents). In use its fairly quiet, certainly not something you would notice in operation in the corner of an office. Looking at the underside there looks to be inputs for casters (no casters provided) being quite a large unit having casters would have made it quite useful. This shredder really is simple to use, just as well because as the other reviews have pointed out there is very little in the way of instructions provided, if it wasn't for the other reviews I wouldn't have known that the strip of white plastic was lubricant, I can only think this should be put through the shredder to work? One feature that I would love to use is the credit card shredder, my wife spends money like nobody’s business, to take her card and shred it next time the next big statement comes in would make my day.

Highly impressed. This is a heavy duty shredder that really can cope with thick cardboard (ideal for boxes) and even CD's and credit cards.Good points:Works quickly and shreds into very small strips, reducing a ton of paper into a tiny amount. Not that heavy, can be moved by one person (but take care)Easy to use. Lights up if overheated and you just have to wait it out.Tells you if there is a jam and it seems reasonably easy to recover from. Not very noisy. Not unattractive. Even in my lounge it doesn't look ugly. The collection bin is fairly large. You don't actually need to line the collection bin with anything - you can tip everything in a waste sack.Negatives:Poor manual.A very sketchy photocopied guide that is a bit useless. (but it's easy enough to work out)One brown paper bag is provided for collecting the shredded matter but zero info on how to get more. (their loss!)A strange white plastic-coated slip of paper comes with it that suggests it contains a cleaning agent but tells you absolutely nothing. Is it for oiling the blades, do you shred it? No info provided. In summary, there are two uses for this item. a) to shred sensitive documents b) to reduce the size of unwanted paper or cardboard boxes into a much smaller pile - thus making disposal much easier.I would recommend this for a small to medium office.Considering the size of the item, the mouth could have been a few inches wider.

This is a compact and powerful shredder that is perfect for using at home. It looks really good and can be fitted in neatly in a home office or anywhere around the house where needed. It comes already assembled and apart from fitting in the waste bag in the bin, it is ready to do. The design is well thought-out and little details such as the handy front position of the bin and big LED display on the front, make this an outstanding and easy to use product. The shedding function is powerful and I have given it a good testing with various types of paper including heavy glossy paper and old CDs and it seems to work its way through effortlessly. The shredded strips of paper are fine enough to be impossible to read and re-assemble again, which makes this shredder perfect for using for destroying sensitive paperwork. The shredder is fully automatic, including automatic unblock function, and comes with a reverse function should you need to reverse the shredding of a document you didn't meant to shred. Apart from paper, the shredder is suitable for CD and credit card shredding. A paper waste bag is supplied for the bin, as well as a shredder oil sheet. If left in auto mode for more than 2 mins without being used,, the shredder will automatically switch off. The on/ off switch is located at the back top side of the shredder which makes it convenient to switch on and off as well a good safety feature.

This is quite a large shredder, perfect for a small office. It has a good sized container which doesn't need emptying too often. It will fit under a standard desk but then it's not easy to shred as you need to put sheets in the top, much better for a corner of a room.I've not yet had the machine jam or struggle but there is rewind button if needed. The Forward button means you can manually make it shred something if it stops going through - sometimes this does happen with smaller items. The shredder can handle bank cards and CDs. I tested both and it ate them quickly and without hesitation into tiny pieces. The paper bag included for the inside of the container is great! It has a sticker for the sides of the bag so it doesn't leak into the main container, and when it's full you just slip it out and put a new one in.You could go without but convenience may be worth it if you don't have a large bin to empty the container in to. dur to the wide mouth of the container it's pretty easy to tip cleanly into a bin.The front loading drawer is much better than side loading shredder as they seem to get stuck often. In short: this shredder is perfect for office use - no complaints at all (as long as the size is ok for the space you want to put it in).

Excellent shredder that is capable of dealing with up to 13 sheets of paper simultaneously, including staples. It's powerful enough that I can just put junk mail straight into it without the need to open a feed through a sheet at a time which is great. It also effortlessly deals with credit cards and unwanted CDs. The bin is large enough that it doesn't need emptying on too regular a basis and when the bin is full, or not inserted properly, an orange warning light displays and the unit will not function until this is rectified. The unit has an auto-feed feature but can also be operated manually using the forward and reverse buttons. It also has an anti-jam feature whereby sensors recognise when too much paper is being put through and the unit will display a red warning light and simply refuse to take it which is a nice touch. The downside, I guess, has to be the price. Most households are probably going to struggle to justify spending several hundred pounds on a shredder. However, having previously bought several cheaper units only to see them burn out in short notice then there may be something to be said for spending the extra money.Overall, excellent product if you can stomach the price tag.

Fantastic!! This Rexel Mercury RSX1834 Cross Cut Shredder is a powerful, effective piece of equipment that performs efficiently with minimum noise. When it arrived and I saw the size of the box, I was a little surprised as I thought it was going to be massive, but, after unpacking I found it to be not as big as it originally looked, which was a bit of a relief! It IS big, but not too bulky, and sits nicely and unobtrusively in the room. It is in fact intended for office use, shredding up to 18 documents at a time, as well as credit cards and cd's - so can cope well with personal stuff. It is easy to use, comes with comprehensive instructions, and also comes with a bag which you put inside the bin for collection. The bin is capacious, and holds a good amount of shredding. The unit will not operate if the bin is full, and will cut out automatically if it overheats and will not restart until it has cooled down sufficiently. It also comes with an oil sheet which is used to lubricate the mechanism and keep it running smoothly, which is an added bonus in my opinion. I really like this shredder, and am very happy to recommend it.

I work for a large organisation which has collections of confidential waste every month. Some departments have very little, others a great deal. There is a problem of storage whilst waiting for the next collection - especially when old records are destroyed; past records may contain a great deal of information on paper if they go back a long way. There's a danger of sacks of such material being left in an open area whilst awaiting collection (we've found them in corridors and car parks in the past). A device like this makes safe storage less of a problem. It takes up little room, shreds large amounts of material quickly - and without jamming - and isn't too noisy in an office environment. It isn't actually lightweight, but can be moved to where it's needed on a small trolley without difficulty. A single paper sack is supplied, but you can use what's to hand, or just use the bin and tip it into a plastic bag.It copes readily enough with the occasional paper clip or staple. A really useful piece of equipment for the security-minded.

Firstly, if you're looking at this shredder for a home environment, as I was, be aware of the size. It's around about the size of a 50l kitchen dustbin so you'll need to have office space big enough. It's also pretty heavy.First impressions out of the box are very good, the build quality is immediately apparently with a nice weighty feel and excellent quality finish.Setup is a doddle, put the bag in the waste paper area and odd you go. For me, cheap, home use shredders are usually poor quality which is why I plumped for this. It shreds paper with such ease and claims to shred up to 18 sheets in one go. I have no reason to doubt the claim. It also goes one further and will shred cds and credit cards. The latter being extremely useful. As this is being used in a home environment and its sheer size, means I won't be emptying it for quite a whileIf you have a big enough house, or you intend to use this is an office, you really wont be disappointed. A highly effective and well built piece of kit.

I purchased this as a replacement for my old Fellowes shredder which was becoming more of a perforator than a shredder (after all it was 12 yrs old) the item arrived pretty quickly after my order. I noticed the deliveryman coming up the drive wrestling with what looked like a box for a fridge rather than a shredder, Oh I thought, I've under estimated the size!!!!,I unpacked and have to say what a great piece of kit! it quite big (for a house - ok for an office) it's not noisy when it goes about its business, looks good and deals with everything you throw at it,emptying it is a breeze and it doesn't need emptying every 10 minutes. It's not got loads of buttons (4 including a proper on off switch a the back)but is alsoslices up CD's and Old Credit CardsVery good cross cut shredder(remember to order some Shredder lubrication oil) to keep your identity safe!
