This Rapesco Automatic Electric USB/Battery Pencil Sharpener in fabulous Powder Blue is a good choice if you want a simple yet reliable pencil sharpener. It has the benefit of having two slots for pencils one of which will take those fatter crayons that other machines simply cannot accommodate. So Infant teachers can buy this without worry the big ones will fit.It also includes two spare sharpening rollers. For these reasons this machine has the edge over others on offer. The machine will sharpen the usual suspects graphite, charcoal, pastel and coloured pencils so that covers the bases. This may be important if you have an elderly relative that has to use the fatter pencils for grip.If you wantto get yourself a simple but reliable battery powered pencil sharpener then this is a good machine for you.It takes 2 AA batteries but you can power it up via a USB lead connected to a suitable power source- even your laptop. It sharpens standard pencils well with no fuss.Great for the elderly (like me) or people that have arthritis but love to use pencil crayons. No batteries are provided so you will need to get your self a set of DECENT non-leak ones.(2AA). Never use cheap zinc carbon because they will always leak and ruin the connections making your sharpener kaput, dead, useless- well you fill in the words. That's all you really need to know but if you want some more advice, observations read on....I've used powered pencil sharpeners for years. Ex-Junior school teacher etc.My first advice is1. Never let anyone else use your machine. This the GOLDEN rule.If others use it they will jam it up, block it or break it pure and simple. I know this from bitter experience. I've had 3 broken before now when I foolishly left them out in the classroom. Note the guarantee states 'In Normal Use'. The makers are not stupid.2. Secondly, let the machine do the work. Don't force, push or put pressure on this will only wear out the cutters/grinders possibly damage them and make them poorly sharpen in the future.3. Clear out any blockages immediately. A clean machine always works better than a dirty, gunged up one4. Always have a bin underneath to catch the pencil shavings and watch out for open windows with gusts of wind! This will save you hours of clearing up messy shavings and lead that will dirty a carpet by being ground in. And have you ever tried to pick up shavings in an office or workplace without a brush and pan?5. Never let anyone use your machine no matter how much they beg or cajole you. Kids? This machine is like crack cocaine or catnip to young kids who will break it. Believe me, as an ex Teacher I know for a fact that if the Builders of the Titanic had let kids loose on it the ship would have sunk in Belfast never mind the Atlantic!A good machine provided you do not let anyone else near it!!!6. (always have a manual hand sharpener to offer to anyone who comes within 5 feet of your machine!!You have been gently warned!

The times I wanted a decent pencil sharpener may well seem to be over with this model as it seems to tick the right boxes in requirements - or at least mine. It arrived in quite adequate packaging with good instructions plus the USB lead for using it via a USB socket - it’s a dual powered model with choice of either battery (2 AA size, not supplied) or via the said USB, although in use the aforesaid USB connection seemed slightly sluggish, but this could be down to my choice of socket on the PC (?), but using a couple of handy AA size batteries and it fair whirled into action plus with batteries it means I can take it into my workshop to use there. It has two slots, one for ‘normal’ size pencils and a slightly bigger one for crayons and similar sized items. In use it cuts well to a nice conical point as pencils should be plus being quite quick - as outlined in the well written instructions, you don’t press too hard but just lightly hold the pencil and let it do its job. The clear plastic ‘window’ shows the shavings coming off and a handy guide to know when it wants emptying plus it will not function with the plastic window off when emptying the shavings, so a good thoughtful safety feature. So far I have sharpened about a dozen or so pencils - I use ‘normal’ pencils in my woodworking hobby for marking out as opposed to the 'carpenters flat' type - and so far I have not had any build up of graphite clogging the base of the cutters up. Two extra cutters are supplied which is a thoughtful bonus. Overall I am rather impressed as its simple to operate, portable (with batteries) quick in use and the makers seem to have thought of just about everything in this design. 5 Stars no problem

As an office manager in a large school, this is a god-send - there are thousands of pencils around the school and whilst the ones in the classrooms will usually get sharpened there, the pencils in the communal spaces tend to get left and sit in pots and trays forlorn and unloved.I unpacked this, storing away the spare blades in my desk drawer and simply plugged it into the side of my PC and sat it next to the screen on my desk. In our school we use plenty of standard pencils, but the younger children use Lyra colouring pencils, which are the triangular fat ones and not only did it handle the normal pencils well, but it handled the Lyra pencils beautifully. You just insert the pencil into the hole for a standard pencil and give an even, but not a hard pressure downwards and wait a few seconds and voila. For the thicker side, there is a safety closure over the hole, which you need to slide back before inserting, but then the same method applies. You have to have a decent grip on the pencil to allow the sharpener to cut the wood, if not, the pencil will just turn with the sharpener. You need to make sure that you empty the bin that catches the shavings quite regularly as otherwise it will affect the rotation of the pencil sharpeners as they turn to sharpen the inserted pencil. I just disconnect the cable plugged into the side of the unit and take it to the bin. I don't advice opening anywhere other than directly over the bin as although it collects the sharpenings inside, it doesn't hold them when you open it - the just drop.

I am useless at using pencil sharpeners. I don't know what it is about the way I do it but just as I get the pencil sharp, the led snaps on inside and I have to start again. I assume I'm bending the pencil too much as I sharpen and that's why this sharpener is great. All you do is put the pencil in the appropriate hole and hold it firmly (if you don't it will just spin in the socket). You can push it down a bit but I find it's just better to hold it firmly and try to stop it from being pulled in further. Check to see if it's sharp and if not, do a bit more. It does seem to shave them down quite quickly.I have still had a few of my daughter's crayons breaking as soon as they are sharp but using the method I just described,I managed to get them all sharp. I had a much easier time sharpening crayons with flat sides as opposed to rounded ones, for some reason.I'm knocking a star off for the shavings bin. It is not easy to get off without making a mess, especially if it's full. It is not a self-contained unit and when you pull it off, you are essentially removing the side of the unit. If you do this without holding it the correct way, the shaving will spill out everywhere. I took to taking the whole thing over to the bin and opening it over the top. Apart from that, it works really well. It also comes with spare blades in case the first ones get dull. I don't know how often they would need changing (or how you'd tell they do) but that might be an extra cost to consider.

This sharpener does a good job and has two key features that make it very versatile.First, the choice of using batteries or the USB outlet of a computer. I wondered if the USB outlet would give the sharpener enough oomph; it does! So no need for batteries if you have a computer with USB sockets. However, for the purposes of this review, I have also tried it with four AA batteries, and it is fine with those too.The other source of flexibility is the range of pencil diameters that can be sharpened. There is a 6-8mm hole (which covers most normal pencils) and a 9-12mm hole that goes on up through most others. Each has its own blade assembly inside, and a spare assembly of each size is included in the pack.Changing the assembly is very straight-forward. (Instructions are provided). The shavings collector is see-through, so it is easy to see when it needs emptying. Taking it out is just a straight pull, and replacing it just as easy. (The instructions say empty the shavings collector as soon as it is half full.)The whole unit is fairly sturdy. The time before the whole unit has to be replaced will very likely be determined by the life of the most-used blade assembly and its (supplied) replacement – so I am hoping the blades are of good quality and will last a good long time.

The best Sharpener I have had to date. You just power the Sharpener, push in a pencil and hold it so it does not spin and it does its job. You will know it is done when you feel very little resistance or you can just visually check if it's sharpened through the window. At first, I did not think it will turn up to be good since I have never used an electric Sharpener before. This Sharpener is awesome and the best part is the option to power it via USB from a Computer. If no PC is available, use 4 AA batteries. It performs beyond my expectations. I have some Staedler and Bic Pencils and some generic but genuine HB pencils and it works them faster and results are really sharp.NOTE..........Poor Quality Pencils?I tried a few of these and it is unable to sharpen any of them to a usable state. These cheap pencils are really hard to sharpen so I have been using Razors because even with manual sharpeners, results were still less than stellar. I have now largely replaced them with better though more expensive pencils. So with this Sharpener, you will not get good results from those nameless none-HB pencils.I have some big unusually shaped Bic Pencils which sharpens very well in the Sharpener's 9 - 12mm slot. The 6 - 8 mm slot is for normal pencils.

The footprint is a little larger than a standard can of soup, so this sharpener doesn't require too much desk space. It is powered by either USB (cable included) or by 4x AA batteries (not included). The cable is long enough for a nearby plug socket (using a normal USB power socket), or via a powered USB socket on a PC etc (not suitable for a passive USB hub).Sharpening is very good and it caters for both pencil sizes. Usually, should the lead be broken it falls in to the shavings receptacle. Sometimes it does get stuck in the blade mounting fixture, but can be easily removed and is safe to do so. The safety features of the sharpener have been well thought out. There'll be no sticking of fingers in to the large sharpener hole, since a spring loaded retractable cover keeps it sealed when not in use. The blades inside the sharpener have a safety rail across them, again, keeping accidents at bay.To avoid any debris being shed, it's best to empty the shavings container over a bin, or keep it at an angle once removed, however the container is easy to clip on or off.No grumbles with this and with two crafty family members this has been put through it's paces. The phrase "sharpest pencils ever" has been heard to echo around the room!

This Rapesco PS12-USB automatic electric pencil sharpener is a decent-enough product from a well-known office products brand – but it is currently almost twice the price of some of it's competitors. On the plus side the double-hole design is suitable for pencils with diameters of both 6-8mm and 9-12mm and replaceable sharpening units are provided. The sharpener can be dual powered by either 4 AA size batteries (these are not included) or by using the supplied USB cable plugged into a suitable USB power source (also not supplied). The sharpener works well-enough with the pencils I have tried so far but with a price of around twenty pounds currently from Amazon I would expect a bit more for this amount.Improvements I would like to see – AA batteries to be supplied, but ideally the unit itself should be rechargeable; the USB power input to be micro-USB rather than the old-style round one – could be difficult/costly to replace this old type of cable should it become faulty. This sharpener is a simple design that is well-made and available in a choice of four colour options to suit your home, school or office environment. Not highly recommended at the current price, not perfect but gets four stars for build-quality.

I was cynical whether there would be sufficient power from a USB cable but there is.Pros====Fairly effortless sharpening.Sharpens round and hexagonal pencils very well each timeMinimal wastageCopes with larger pencilsSpare sharpenersOption of battery power (batteries not supplied)Non slip feetHigh visibility collection chamber for shavingChoice of coloursEasy emptying.Cons====Two hands are required (or a vice). No plug included. Not recommended for use with a computer as a power source. The clip on the battery cover seems likely to break quite quicklyJammed on when trying to sharpen triangular Ergosoft pencils.I would recommend this sharpener, but only if you are happy to use a mains adapter as your power source.I tried it with a wide variety of hard and soft pencils, with excellent results each time. The one exception was with the unusual triangular shafted Ergosoft pencils. It was disturbing that the sharpener kept going when they jammed. The machine survived this incident though, which shows that the innards are robust.

I like to use pencil and paper when sketching out processes at work. There's something about physically drawing the steps that I find easier when comprehending how everything fits together. As such I get through a lot of pencils and I'll be honest I'm bored of having to get up and go to the bin to sharpen them by hand without the shavings going everywhere. Thanks then to Rapesco for making this sharpener a fair size that it can sharpen a good few pencils before needing to be emptied. The device is fairly compact and seems light but is sturdily built. It can operate off a USB power source making it ideal for desktop use, you can even change the sharpener size easily.if you're not close to a power source this can take batteries too.The design is simple and practical as I've come to expect from Rapesco. Opening the shavings cover or the battery compartment is difficult at first but replacing the case or cover results in a satisfying click.I've taken to locking mine away when I leave the office, it has a habit of disappearing if I don't...

This replaces an old electric pencil sharpener (different brand) that 1) ate batteries and 2) was poor at sharpening pencils. This one, for starters, runs on a USB cable (batteries optional) and even though just plugged into any old USB 2.0 port with a maximum of 500mA (0.5A) available it sharpens my HB pencils really well.More importantly, it does not stall like my old one did and requires absolutely no pressure to start working - as soon as you have half inserted a pencil it starts whirring away and then with minimal pressure sharpens very easily.Although I don't have larger pencils requiring the 9-12mm hole,I was pleased to see it has a shutter on it to prevent little fingers finding their way into it.Emptying the shavings catcher MUST be done over a waste bin as it is not a container (like, say, a paper-shredder has) it is just a bit of plastic that keeps the shavings from spilling onto your desk. Don't open it up unless you are ready! So far so good and thank goodness I don't have to feed it batteries.

My Partner likes to draw and as it happened this Rapesco Automatic Electric (USB/Battery) Pencil Sharpener was available, we needed, on occasions need, very sharp pencils for my interest. I have seen and tried out several types of Electric sharpener to find one that would do work best for us. This unit containing a double-hole scheme to fit pencil diameters: 6-8mm and 9-12mm. Easy to clean by removing shavings tray and tipping into a bin. The whole enterprise comes complete with two disposable blade units that are easily changeable. The process of charging by USB is useful, however, it can also be charged by batteries, alas these are not supplied. On initial use, this sharpener turns the pencil to a fine point, however, that perfect point was not always achieved. It is hard to understand why this should happen. As the same pencils were used each day. That said, I would recommend this sharpener, as most times this is actually respectable, and mostly proficient pencil sharpener which does a quick and efficient job.

This is a very neat (and stylish) pencil sharpener. Standard pencils just slot straight into the small slot, while larger one's can by sharpened by opening a spring-loaded tab then inserting. Although this may seem an unnecessary frill, in practice, it means that you are unlikely to just shove a small pencil into the large slot. You can either use batteries (not supplied) or use the supplied USB lead, though you'll need to supply an apple plug if you want to use it from the mains rather than a free port on your computer. In use. it's very simple - push a pencil in, and it is sharpened!! The cover to the shavings box is easy to remove, though there is no internal removable box; you'll need to disconnect the unit from your cable to take the unit to your disposal bin. However, the receptacle is a very reasonable size, so unless you are a very heavy user, you shouldn't need to do this very often. It also comes with two spare blade assemblies. All-in-all, a very useful addition to the office or home..

A, generally, first class sharpener, stopped from being 5 star by a couple of small details.First the good. Goodness, it sharpens well and quickly whether using the USB (included) cable or batteries, the results are first class. It also sharpenes larger sized pencils/crayons so great for Mums of young kids or for early learning professionals. It comes with, as said, the USB cable but no (shame) batteries plus 2 spare sharpening heads so should last quite a while before worrying about replacements. So why reduce one star from the rating?1. Unless handled carefully, it eats pencils2. The cover to the shaving reservoir is a bit hard to remove so I managed to spray shavings of wood and pencil all across the work area. Both of these are easy to overcome with practice, but should have been thought through more at the design stage. However, do not be put off buying this, it's excellent and I can see me getting a couple more when Christmas approaches as presents

This is a really good, small pencil sharpener that I have on my desk at work, attached to my PC.I have the pink sharpener, which is a lovely pop of pastel pink on an otherwise grey and brown desk. The sharpener has two different holes for smaller and larger pencils on the top of the sharpener, and the sharpener starts automatically when you insert a pencil. You do have to hold the pencil pretty tightly, as otherwise it spins around with the force of the sharpener! The noise of the sharpener doesn't offend me, I think it's pretty quiet for what it is, but some of my work colleagues do find it irritating... However, I use pencils for note-taking at work, rather than pens,so having a pencil sharpener on my desk is essential. The sharpener has an easy-to-detach cover and it's great that it comes with spare blades as well. So far, sharpening pencils has been successful without nibs breaking off, so I would certainly recommend it as an addition to your desktop.
