One of the two common ways to extend an existing network is to use an Access Point and the other is by wireless range extender; there are advantages to both options. The "NETGEAR WAC104-100UKS WAC104 SOHO Small Business 11ac Dual Band Wireless Access Point, 300/867 Mbps (2.4/5 GHz)" demands a wired connection to the original router or an associated network switch and has its own IP address which may be very different than the router's. It also uses its own web interface to control its set-up, security levels (not pre-set) and other relevant operational essentials. It is intended to replace an N-standard WiFi extender currently used to provide coverage around a side corridor that is otherwise'dead'.Netgear have a long history in networking hardware and several of their routers were once used; their network switches still are. The major issue with this lies within its documentation which is variously incomplete, unclear and occasionally wrong! Those with sufficient relevant experience could probably figure it out in time but a few previous reviewers have provided sufficient information for others to get over most of its humps and bumps. As not every feature is currently needed and the relevant instructions not checked, there may be further errors to be found. That assistance is very much appreciated as it saved some head-scratching but should not have been necessary and it is down to Netgear to get it right. It isn't the first time their instructions for a product were problematic and it may not be the last - they are not alone and others including Belkin and TP-Link have done about as badly on occasion.Once correctly installed and configured, it delivers to expectation but the whole process would have been simpler had the instructions been clearer and without needing to cross-check with the suggestions from previous reviewers which were printed for convenience. It does not provide the highest WiFi bandwidth possible but sufficient for several users if they are intermittently on-line - 300 Mbps at 2.4GHz and 867 Mbps at 5 GHz - and can support up to 128 (in theory). There are alternatives mostly from other brands that offer higher bandwidths. Used with temporary cabling - a pre-existing cabling fault needs be fixed - it provided usable WiFi signal strengths where they were most needed (especially at 5GHz) but safety issues preclude its continued long-term use pending re-cabling.Physically, it is modern in styling with straight lines and angled edges, piano black and not overtly obvious unless you want it to be and almost attractive. It provides the expected four Ethernet ports, any of which is needed as the up-link to connect to the main router. If the remaining three are too few, an Ethernet switch can be added for expansion. It allows for wall-mounting should you need it. It is reasonably priced but there may be better-documented alternatives at around the same price and may not therefore be the best choice for the less experienced user.

Firstly, I know the review is about the product, not Amazon's service but... I ordered this wireless access point at 10pm on Saturday night and it arrived Sunday morning. Marvellous!I have only just set the router up so I will update the review after a period of usage but I have docked one star because of the set-up process. By default, the device does not get an ip address from your router automatically (i.e. the DHCP client is disabled by default). It would have been a lot easier for me if this had been enabled by default. (Failing that, Netgear should enable encryption and set default passwords for the two wifi channels so at least the device could be used without the wifi part being wide open.)In my case it meant that I couldn't access the set-up page to change the admin password, set wifi passwords, etc. I downloaded the Netgear Genie app to try and find out what the device was doing but it didn't register on there - the app only saw my laptop and the router, not the shiny new access point that was sat in between. Googling the issue kept telling me to look in router's access list to see what was connected - not going to work as the access point isn't getting an IP address from the router! Only when I resorted to a bit of RTFM did I twig - manually give my laptop an IP adress and subnet mask to match the access point and all of a sudden I can access the device's set-up page. The relevant manual page was p72 'You Cannot Log In to the Access Point' under the troubleshooting section. Yes, a bit of a 'D'oh!' moment. I switched on the DHCP client to make admin a bit easier. Other networking gurus might say to leave it on a different subnet but I'm not qualified to advise either way - just highlighting how I accessed the set-up page. Now it's set up I'm going to move it to the garden shed as the idea is to provide wifi to the far corners of the garden. I'll update the review once it has been in use for a while.

So this access point is good, but it loses a star due to its unnecessarily complicated set-up.Once you've set it up, the signal is strong over N and AC bands, and it provides 4 LAN ports, should you wish to wire devices into it.Unfortunately, this is very hard to get working, to begin with. For the first time ever, I had to call a support line to actually even get to the point where I could access the admin menu on the router. Essentially none of my devices, Mac, iPhone, iPad or windows laptop would allow me to access it. The support helpline was very good, they helped configure the LAN access so to allow access to the default IP of the access point which is what seemed to be the issue.Onceyou get through that the set-up is OK but some functions are stupidly complicated - for instance setting it up to extend an existing network - unnecessarily complex. This access point is good, but the set-up is complex, I can recommend this as long as you're very tech savvy - if not, there are probably consumer alternatives that are worth considering.

Connecting this to a NETGEAR GS208 Ethernet Desktop Switch setup is remarkably easy (there is virtually nothing to do beyond plug it in), and setting up security with a password was easy too. I am really only using this for is wireless capabilities, and as such I am impressed. The range is good, part of our house is an extension with the extra thickness of a cavity wall dividing it from the main part, which to date has required up to three wireless points to cover the entire place, however this NETGEAR WAC104 appears to be able to reach almost all parts.I am a little puzzled regarding the size of this device, it does appear exceptionally large and it is very light in weight and feels very plasticy.I do also wonder why they do not provide a longer power lead, as they recommend site the device up high (”place the access point in an elevated position” - online manual) that is not always possible with the length of lead supplied.

Initial setup via the Web interface was a little buggy, the box reset itself during the first attempt to enable WPS security, but once connected to the LAN (and set to DHCP, the only recommended setting, and the instructions are at pains to explain this is not a router) it flew.Excellent responsive access point once set up, and whilst specialist WiFi settings are present, there is actually very little else to concern the average user. Whilst the online firmware update was a nice idea, I was dismayed that the update would factory reset the unit; a nightmare having just configured it (without which it wouldn't have connected to the netgear server). So,at this time I've not updated. The only slight surprise was that the look and feel of the setup was barely different from units I was using fifteen years ago! Maybe this is no bad thing.

Used on a wired network with a wifi router downstairs, and to mainly extend the wifi signal upstairs. Very easy to connect up and away you go. Minimal configuration required, beyond entering your details and up and running. While it's very easy to set up and get running, it's also open access by default - once connected to the wired network it shares it out via wifi WITHOUT any credentials required. This is not a good idea. It's easy to set this up, but I didn't notice straight away and when I did I had to lock it down. Seems a bit of a risk in this day and age though. It's a decent Netgear piece of kit, with a web interface to configure and easy to set up and use. The price is good for what you get and it has a good range, however the security issue above makes it loose a star for the less technically inclined would be at risk.

I had a lot of difficulties in getting this to do what it was supposed to do - the slim guidebook provided is very misleading, lacks any real discussion of troubleshooting, and seems to assume the whole process is so straightforward that it can't possibly go wrong. I'm actually a computing science lecturer, so the fact that I had trouble with it didn't bode especially well. When you get past the problems though this is a reasonable access point at a reasonable price point - it's been working away quite happily to give me much better wi-fi coverage throughout the house. Even when it's up and running though you still have to go head to head with a willfully obtuse administration system that means you'd best hope you get it right the first time, and don't need to do anything complicated with your configuration.

This was the perfect solution for taking strain off our home network. Four computers, connected computer equipment, phones, tablets, smart TV, game consoles, BT box and all manner of other stuff.Four LAN cables run out of the back of the home router. The router has dual band wifi. One cable creates a network connected to a single band wifi and the other is cabled to this. Very simple to set up with same SSID and spacing in the channels. Now we can have 2.4GHz and 5GHz devices running at the limitation of the LAN cable connected. As with all Netgear products, you are paying for a name, deservedly so.

I love this! I now have Wifi and ethernet in part of the house that was a deadspot. I did have to run an ethernet cable from my router to this Access Point, but that was the hard bit. I now have a strong Wifi signal plus ethernet where there was nothing before. I followed the instruction leaflet enclosed and was able to login to the configuration menu with no problems (other reviewers have said this leaflet was incorrect, so I assume it must have been updated). I changed the default passwords to my own & now have secure, reliable Wifi. 5 stars NETGEAR!

Brilliant access point which has dramatically increased the speed of the transmission of large files across my network, not to mention impressive download speeds. It has even improved the speeds of moving files using equipment which utilises the older 802.11n wireless standard. Signal gets a little weak in the extreme corners of my house when upstairs, but it still streams Amazon Prime content without ludicrous buffering times. Movies are not interrupted. I am delighted with it. I trust Netgear and use this with a Netgear 16-port Smart Switch.

Device itself works very well and provides strong dual-band wifi. Good value and quality for money. Where I am a little bit disappointed is the access point configurability. The web interface is very limited, you cannot disable some of the features (e.g. smb network sharing, so you now always see 2 dummy hosts in your windows network). Moreover, you cannot edit the saved configuration file manually and upload it, the system won't let you, must be some kind of checksum on the configuration file.

This product has way too much bad feedback. Mine was extremely easy to setup and does everything it's advertised to do. For everyone saying the signal is weak, 5ghz is famously week, don't expect to be able to access it far beyond the room you're using this AP in. As for the 2.4ghz, maybe could be a bit stronger but still delivers pretty good performance. I'm paying for 300mbps and as long as I'm in the room the AP is in, I get more or less the full 300 which is pretty impressive for WiFi.

For those having difficulty getting to the setup page, and if you have already connected this to an existing router, then the router's DHCP will have changed the IP address from the 192.168.0.100 specified in the manual. Best way to find this is to download the Fing app (great app btw), scan your network, and it will show up as WAC104 with the IP address below. Type that IP address in to your browser and you're away. Default username:password is admin:password

The box looks a bit cheap and lightweight but it's a consumer item I suppose.I had trouble connecting due to the default IP address was not in my network domain. Once sorted it works fine. Not the strongest/most range signal but adequate.Unfortunately after 3 weeks it went intermittent, the signal kept stopping until reset. However Amazon to the rescue and a replacement was sent which works flawlessly.

I needed more coverage at the back of the house due to thick brick walls so I got the Netgear ap and connected it via the mains wiring (power connectors) as speed was not the main issue. It was fiddly to set up as my laptop would not allow a connection to aplogin.net but found my iPad worked OK.I set new log in passwords for admin and WiFi and all works fine.
