I have owned a Windows phone now for a couple of years but the sealed battery in my trusty Nokia Lumia 925 was beginning to show its age so I decided to buy a flagship Microsoft Lumia 950.First impressions are that the back of the phone, being a polycarbonate matt finish may not appeal to some and doesn't appear to be terribly premium. The 950 is a premium phone though and since the back cover is removable so the battery can be swapped out and wireless charging is available I can forgive the slightly drab back cover. I know some cannot and that's fine but really, its not that important to me and you can but covers from third parties if this bother you.The front of the phone is a different matter entirely. The screen is a UHD Oled and is stunning with crystal clear text and image quality with four times as many pixels as a 1080P screen. But this comes at a cost in the form of battery life which can be short if you are a moderate to heavy user. Fortunately you can swap out the battery for a spare and recharge times are very short too so its easy to recharge the phone during your lunch hour should you have the charger with you and access to a power point. For lighter users such as me that spends much of the day either on a laptop, tablet or pc and just answers a few calls battery life is very good indeed. I could probably stretch to three days between charges if I pushed it.Running on the Windows 10 mobile OS, a work in progress things are somewhat hit and miss in terms of performance with the odd message requesting a restart due to a sim change, popping up from time to time. It is getting better and MS are working hard on getting the OS running properly. Most of the time the OS is smooth, responsive and works very well, it just isn't as solid as 8.1 was. Also Groove, the MS music app is not terribly good with Bluetooth operations in the car at present. You can play songs but you have to do so via the phones screen, song lists and controls being absent from the cars head unit screen at present. I use an SD card in the car so this isn't an issue for me but for some this could be a deal breaker and MS need to get this sorted out ASAP. Call quality is, both on the phone and in the car very good however and for business users this is an important consideration.Wireless charging mentioned earlier in the review works well but trying to used the notifications on a charging plate such as Nokias DT-903 doesn't work unfortunately. This is a OS issue again by the look of it. The notifications slider is present within the phone app that sets up the plate but it doesn't function properly, going back to the left as soon as any attempt is made to set it up. Hopefully this will be sorted out as MS are releasing the DT904 soon which is a dead ringer for the DT903 but has the Microsoft logo in place of Nokias. Hopefully the software is similar and getting the 904 to work will mean the 903 will function too by default. Charging works fine which is the most important consideration. The camera is very good indeed. Fitted with a F1.9 Pureview Zeiss lens, images are sharp with very good white balance and excellent colour saturation. Living images are included which is a moving photograph if the function is enabled and the camera detects movement when the subject is shot. As well as 1080P video the camera is also UHD capable. Manual adjustments including a very clever post shot flash setting adjustment is included. Honestly this has to be one of the best in phone cameras money can buy right now even when pitted against the latest IPhone and Android devices.Double tap, a feature many find useful to turn on the phone is not supported on the Lumia 950. It is not known if this is a temporary situation or a permanent one. Some say this is a deal breaker but really? A single press of the central power button does the same job and double tap was never something I used anyway. I think anybody rejecting the 950 over this trivial issue needs to get some perspective in their life, its a very minor one at best.Security! Microsoft have opted for Iris scan rather than finger print scanning and its quite effective. Arguably its more secure than finger print (no possibility of anybody using your finger to access the phone whilst you sleep) and it works in the dark too. It struggles if you wear glasses with special light sensitive or highly reflective lenses but with some perseverance you can help the Windows Hello, their name for the Iris scanning function get better at recognising your eyes. Its in Beta at present but I would say it works well 90% of the time. A pin is used if it cannot recognise you.As ever the App gap may put some off. Apps are very important to some as the crowd shifts from one fad app to the next. Snap Chat seems to be the latest flavour of the month but I can live without them frankly. Office, Facebook and Twitter are all there but if you need all the latest apps look elsewhere.Read full review...
