This phone represents excellent value for money. If you can get past it not being either Android or iOS then it is just as good as any generally higher priced competitor. The phone itself feels well made and solid with a nice bright and legible screen. Fair enough it is made out of plastic but it is well constructed - there are no flimsy thin plastic covers that snap when you try to prise them off.For most tasks (see below), it is nice and responsive and I have not had any slow-downs or bizarre behaviours. The camera on the phone is generally excellent - I am no David Bailey (by any stretch of the imagination) but I do predominately use my phone to take photos. In the past I have used iPhones and generally used that as my bench-mark for comparing other phone's cameras. I think for my purposes the camera in this thing is just as good, certainly no worse for most tasks. This camera does not have the 120fps slo-mo of the iPhones or the OIS for the S editions but so what? This phone is practically a quarter of the price (but certainly not a quarter of the quality). My only negative about the camera is it is not fast. It is not slow by any means but it is not suited for those super quick spur of the moment "gotta catch that" types of moments. You cannot simply press the button and quickly snap a series of sub-second images. There are extra "lens" that provide a rapid burst mode but those require you to deliberately go in and select them (i.e. "now I will exit the regular camera app and active the burst mode app") which all takes time and as such is pointless if you're trying to quickly catch that wonderful spontaneous moment. The burst mode apps also don't simply store a series of individual photos into your photo album they store the images in a proprietary (single file) format and then you have at some later point go in and select which image(s) you wish to keep from the burst action. Again that makes burst mode a bit of a faff. The other aspect of camera slowness is around "HDR" mode photos. As I say it takes some nice quality photos but if you take 3 or 4 HDR shots in a row the camera app stops responding for a good few seconds as it "processes" the images. If you are taking a single HDR shot that it does not cause any issues, the camera app is immediately available for more (non HDR) photos. Partly for this reason and the fact the camera just takes nice shots I do not bother too much with HDR mode (or Rich Capture as MS calls it).Having said all that, I am not deducting any stars. I do not mind really, the camera apps provides other nice customisable features (e.g. shutter speed control) and generally produces such nice photos that I have accepted that I might not be able to capture those spontaneous moments. One of the best things about this phone is the battery. Not only is it replaceable it also lasts. With reasonable realistic usage (e-mail, photos, web browsing even short Sat-nav usage) I get 2 days between charges (2 days as in 48 hours, not these "marketing" days which are only 18 hours long).I know other phones claim to last "days" but when you look into the claims they are either "short" days or you are only interacting with the phone once or twice a day. It is so refreshing to have a device that can genuinely last.In summary I am pleased with this phone and would recommend it.

I am so happy with this phone that I wonder why so many people go for flagships (although I will probably get the 950xl when it drops in price). I have had 4 phones in the past 1.5 yrs, the HTC one Max+, nokia lumia 1520, note 3 and nokia930, however, I hands down have to say this phone is the best value for money and has everything I want. Although I loved being able to write on the note, it became tedious erasing all the mis-interpreted text, the HTC was beautiful and large but again it was android, the 1520 was a thing of beauty, so pleasing to the eye that i'd coveted it for so long, when i finally got it, i was too scared to use it, however, unfortunately it had a faulty screen and got returned, and I have just decided to get rid of the 930 because basically 5" is too small for me!The 640xl is big, but not uncomfortable, i am female and don't have particularly huge hands. I bought the black version and put a bright orange case on it, the case is a little slippery but for the price to replace this phone, I'm not anxious about it. The screen is big and clear, the colours are better than on my lumia 930 and preferred to the over saturated colours on the Samsung, the text can be a little blurry but I have read books comfortably on my reading app. The camera is pretty good as well, the thing with the 930 is that the glass screen seemed pretty thick and that somehow felt like an impediment to the faithful rendering of photographs, I don't feel like that with the 640xl and as long as you aren't expecting professional type photographs from your mobile, I think anyone would be more than happy with this phone! I have had a few issues with transferring music, but then I had the Amazon music app on android which doesn't seem to be available, this brings me to my biggest issue with Windows phone, why aren't big companies developing apps for this os, please don't get me wrong, there are plenty of useful apps, (how many does an individual need?!), I.e the major banks are in the Windows app store, I'm not a huge gamer but the games I have run well and there seem to be loads in the store so I don't understand why people moan about the lack of apps, but Amazon hasn't updated the reading app since Windows 7, and I do blame Amazon! That's fine, I can just buy music from the windows store and I don't need to worry because it will always be on my computer in an easy to access format should I want to transfer it, and anyway, the windows 10 for mobile rumours indicate that I may be able to use my apps across platforms.I haven't experienced any other issues, in fact, it's better than the 930 IMO, thanks to the glance screen and the amazing battery life, I'm really v happy with it, but then I've never wanted an iPhone and don't really understand why anyone would want to spend so much money when they can get a 640xl for a so much less, and no one will want to steal it, that's a bonus btw!I looked at online reviews before buying this and was very impressed with what the reviewers had to say and I don't regret buying it, I have sold both the note 3 and lumia 930 to finance the purchase of this and still have enough money left over for the festive season, can't go wrong!

Moved over from Android, although I still have a tablet for games bought with Google Play. I decided that for a phone I do prefer the Windows OS, which in many ways reminds me of my old Blackberry, not too many gimmicks just a solid dependable system. Hopefully the handsets will follow through with the 10 upgrade coming to desktops soon. The phone operates smoothly and all the tiles can be customised / moved / sized to how you want your home screen to look. Setting up was straightforward and I was soon able to have multiple email accounts perfectly running in no time. This was one of the reasons for leaving Android, there have been some serious problems after a Lollipop update - none of the apps updated, email accounts stopped working and the final straw, Play store disappeared - so time to go I thought. having seen someone else using Windows I'm glad I moved over, everything is well presented, not fussy and easy to use.

I have been using Android phone for 5+ years and was eyeing a 6 inch Android phone. Having bought a Lumia 640 few weeks back for my daughter, which was impressive, I took the risk and bought 640XL. I was able to add my Gmail account which had all the contacts. It has maps similar to Google Maps with driving instructions. With listening to music for 1-2 hours a day, checking news and weather, couple of phone calls and a bit of browsing, the battery last 2+ days, which was impressive. Camera quality is fine in outdoor; ok in the indoor. App Store cannot be matched with Google’s but I was able to find most of the apps I was using, London bus times, sound profiler, so on.Accessing Google’s Apps like Google Drive is limited if not impossible. I guess Windows 10 will pave way for more Apps similar to Google Play. All in all, I am thoroughly loving it and no regrets in moving from Android. Thoroughly recommend Lumia 640XL.

Does all I want it to do, If your not an Apple fan this phone is ideal for most people. Nice large screen, the moving tiles are a bonus.I found this quite easy to set up ( I'm 61 and not an IT expert) .Transfers photos easy into your P.C. & the E-Mail account was again easy to set up.Ringtones are very limited so I went to the Internet to download much better ones.. Camera is fine for everyday shots. The battery life is excellent for me and never have I needed to charge the phone every day. Can't fault this phone so far, iv had mine for almost a year..

I'm no techie so I can't really go into that kind of detail but this phone is the business, looks good, doesn't feel overly large in the hand, there are more than enough app's available to satisfy me. Reading Kindle books is a pleasurable experience better than I expected the music player is good and the camera stands out as well. All in all this phone has exceeded my expectations I would go as far as to say it's not only the best that I have ever owned but also the easiest to use. As of yet I cannot fault it, thoroughly recommend it.

Used a couple of Windows phones before this is best yet. Has small ish memory admittedly but expandable so not massive issue. But very good indeed compared to others. Build quality good replaceable plastic backs handy feature and camera excellent. Screen is massive - love it One rather important downside - this phone struggles with its Facebook App with regard to uploading photos... a known problem but a pain nonetheless.

Just needed a heap large screen phone for my 70 yo father to use, windows phones are perfect as you can make the tiles/apps you use regular much larger and therefore slightly less confusing anyway he loves it and to be honest for the money its amazing. if you are comparing to a galaxy 7 edge or iPhone 7 then yeah its going to look a bit basic and low spec. If you just want a phone that gets the job done this is it.

Upgraded from a secondhand Nokia Lumia 920, before that having the iphone 6. However, the Lumia 640 XL is already the best phone I've had; I cant fault it. I'm a big fan of the windows 8 format, having a windows 8 laptop, and recently a tablet in the same format also. I didn't realise quite how big the phone is, but the bigger the better really!

Amazing phone, can't wait for the windows 10 update in December. The battery on this phone is a beast, it goes on n on n on. Recommend, you'll never get better than this for the price! Oh, a lovely screen you can even see outside...

This phone is fantastic. In my view much better than an Iphone or a Samsung. The tile icons are very large and make it easier to use. The price was very good and the size of the screen fantastic.

29.9.2015

Excellent phone that does everything I used to do with android but with less cost and less annoying updates every 5 minutes . Battery life is good and phone is not too large .

6.2.2017

Phone is great - setup straightforward, update to Windows 10 easy, works well on Three in UK (4G), uses a micro SIM. Wanted a larger Windows phone than previous Lumia (520).

2.12.2015

For the price you really can't go wrong if you want a large screen Windows phone, down graded from a 925 to the 640xl, better battery life and the performance is very good.
