It still seems kind of big for one handed use, the touch screen is a little sensitive and sometimes the phone can react without actually touching the screen (close, but no cigar, as they say). With the build and feel, I am satisfied. It is nicely light and also attractive, although the selfie-camera 'notch' draws attention to itself rather unfortunately because of how good a job Samsung have done in making it such a minor imperfection on the otherwise beautiful screen. This, though, is subjective and you'll have to see for yourself.Connectivity with other devices (laptops, etc.) seems to be an issue in my experience, but to be honest I think I still need to get used to it and it's probably an easy fix when you know.Coming from an iPhone 5 there are still things I miss about that 'dinky' little phone that suits my purposes, but since then everyone's gone huge and this is, all considered, probably the perfect size for me otherwise: nice in the pocket still while providing a good display of photographs and videos which it takes really well, I should add.I have been disappointed with older phones' ability to capture a landscape, but not in this case. At night, I *expect* to be underwhelmed as no phone even today can take the place of a proper DSLR camera. We all know to expect a bit of blur and noise but apparently the A40 is okay at night. Not the best but far from worst.Privacy and security are always matters for me to consider and right from the get-go it is a challenge to set up without unnecessarily agreeing to things. I'd advise people not to click any 'next' until they have seen the minimum amount of options they need to select. This may seem basic, but manufacturers try and catch people out. Software I'd otherwise say runs well although I'm not an ardent phone gamer. It's just a little sensitive as previously stated.I do like to keep my biometrics to myself so I like the feature that allows me to have a PIN unlocked in designated locations (like at home, for example), six-figure pin being the recommended minimum. It should also be noted that 'airplane mode' is not necessarily as all-encompassing as it purports to be. People have wondered why their phone still seems to follow them around even though they like to travel in airplane mode, so turning location off could be important for you as well.I'm still intrigued with the possibilities of the A40 as one does get a good amount of phone for the financial outlay. At the end of the day I don't think I'd buy any differently (if I were again to chose 'smart' over 'dum'). Charges quicky, holds it pretty well.... Sound is loud and clear but I'd like another speaker. Happy chappie :)

This is my first Android phone after moving from an iPhone 6S Plus and previous iPhones before that.First off, the software looks great. The previous poor design of Android apps has thankfully been updated and can now compete with iOS. It's smart and clean.Secondly, the screen. It's gorgeous, great colours, hi-res, no bezels and the perfect size. The phone is light and feels great in the hand which really puts into perspective how heavy and uncomfortable my previous iPhone 6S Plus really was.Performance is on a par with the old iPhone which is absolutely fine, no lags and does everything smoothly. Very impressive.Battery life is decent, I use it pretty sporadically though consistently through the day for messaging,Spotify, browsing in the evenings and it finishes with about 40-50% most nights which is more than ok.The cameras are great though you really can't zoom in on the wide angle lens much due to the low res which is no great loss if you're going for wide angle anyway but worth it for the flexibility and it really is wide angle. Finally the price. I can honestly not believe the £200 price tag and would consider it good value at £100 more (don't tell Amazon).Final comparison with iPhone/iOS if you're still reading. Great to have a physical finger print reader as I'm really not a fan of FaceID and it is fast to unlock, quicker than the iPhone. I was tending towards 3rd party apps anyway such as Spotify, WhatsApp, Chrome so no great loss moving from iPhone. Finally expandable storage, my iPhone was filling up after owning it for about 4 years and in really could not justify several hundreds of pounds for new hardware hence the punt on this. Absolutely excellent and would highly recommend.Feature that are better on Android than iOS: being able to close all apps at once, tidier notification centre when dragging down from the top of the screen, WhatsApp design is smarter.Features I miss from iPhone: Apple Pay combines everything together well; Google Pay is good but Barclays contains it in their own app, it works well but easier when all in one place. Support for older models, Android is known for being slow to roll out support to older phones however by the time that becomes an issue I would probably upgrade to another mid-range phone like this in a couple or years to get all of today's flagship features at next to nothing price.

This review is only about first impressions, as I've only had the phone for 3 days - I hope to add more when I've used it some more. Bear in mind that this is only my second smart phone and my previous model, which is was limping along, was a LEAGOO M8 Pro which cost me around £80 from Amazon two and a half years ago. I use a smart phone much more as a PDA (remember those?) and web browser than as a mobile phone, so I can't say how good this is as phone other than it makes and receives calls satisfactorily. What I can say is that it's much faster in every respect than my old LEAGOO, the display is crisp and clear, battery charging is quite fast with either the supplied Samsung charger or either one of my two Anker chargers.Battery life seems much as I expected and easily lasts a day. WiFi connection is rock solid and would be quicker if I had a better Internet service through my 4G router. 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of ROM are a huge improvement over my old LEAGOO and more than enough for my needs. There is a slot for an extra memory card alongside the two SIM cards should you need more. I don't know whether you could install Apps on the extra RAM, but I suspect not.I've taken a few shots with the cameras and was pleased with the results. There were a few Samsung apps installed, some of which can be removed, others disabled, if required.I've read some negative reports about the fingerprint reader being slow but no sign of this on my phone. There was Samsung update shortly after I set the phone up so that may have remedied any shortcomings.I bought this QLTYPRI Case for Samsung Galaxy A40 for it, with which I am also very pleasedhttps://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07VSZ2RQR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1I've yet to test all the functions of the Samsung but so far, so very good...........UPDATE: I've had the phone for long enough now to say that my first impressions still stand. I've used a couple of Anker chargers in addition to the one supplied and the phone's charged quickly on them. WiFi connections, both 5 and 2.4 GHz, and phone connections have been good. The camera has done everything I've asked of it. I've had no crashes or lockups, the battery performance has been better than I expected and, above all, it's fast and responsive.

Overall the Samsung A40 is a good value, modern looking phone. It has some flaws, but for the price it's a good deal. I believe Samsung could have made the phone a lot better with different design priorities, e.g. prioritising the ultra-wide camera quality over the selfie camera. The software also has much room for improvement, and I hope that Samsung will provide those improvements through updates in the future.Pros:- Size and weight are ideal, modern design- Very nice display- Build quality seems fine even though it's plastic, it actually looks and feels quite good- Main camera is decent in good light,ulta-wide is a nice addition- 1080p Video quality is good- Good size battery- Samsung shutdown prevention (interesting security feature)Cons:- Standby battery drain is much worse than anticipated, touched on by various review sites, it's probably due to a software issue and I hope it's fixed by Samsung. That being said the battery life is okay, unfortunately it could be great.- One UI is terrible, swiping up is far too sensitive, left / right swipe not sensitive enough, it also lags compared to Nova launcher.- I believe screenshot in power menu is an Android 9 feature, so where is it on Samsung phones? Why do they omit extremely simple and useful features?- One-handed mode could be improved, it would be nice if it was configurable so only the height decreased and not the width, the phone is thin enough to use with one hand anyway, it's just a bit too tall for that.- Can't override adaptive brightness in bright light, e.g. outdoors?- Camera app automatically overrides brightness, extremely unnecessary and no way to configure it! It also needs to automatically reduce touch sensitivity for the edges when using it, as accidental touches make the app a nightmare to use in landscape orientation.- Ultra-wide camera does not have large enough sensor or bright enough lens, it definitely needed to be better because it's almost useless, instead they added a 25 MP selfie camera? Not sure what Samsung is thinking here.- Not impressed with the speaker.

I give this product 5 stars however, I would like to give two comments which just shave the five stars. The set up should have been straightforward. There is a computerised voice to tutor one in the installation. However, when I tried to enter text (e.g. the Wi-Fi password) the keyboard popped up but I could not enter any text. After much frustration I realised that to enter text I has to press a key three times (one long and two short). Near the end of the setup one screen seemed to freeze as I could not get it to move. Again after must frustration I realised that to move the screen needed a two finger action (in a manner of speaking). My other gripe is the ringtones or rather lack of them.Within Settings the ringtone can be changed. However, the only ringtone available was the one already installed. Do these phones leave the factory with a random ringtone or are they all the same?Having got these points out of the way, this is an excellent phone. The battery lasts me about two days. Charging from empty takes about one and a half hours. This is the default setting of fast charge and according to Google does not reduce the battery’s life. All actions on the phone are fast e.g. searching the internet and opening videos. The storage capacity of 64GB appears to be adequate Bear in mind that about a quarter of this is occupied by the operating system. However, I would suggest that use of an SD card is essential. I live in a poor phone reception area and my last phone was near unusable to make calls. This one gives excellent reception. Before buying this phone I researched professional sites for reviews. The considered opinion was that the phone was adequate. I beg to differ. I have never used an expensive phone but fail to see what one could do better than the A40. I believe that the price is astonishingly good. Why pay more?Yes, as people have said the phone was originally for the European market. However, this is stated on the box and the only “foreign” bit was the basic set up instructions which were in Slovak (I think). Do not let this put you off.

So where do I start? Coming from a galaxy S9 that died without warning, I was looking for a replacement that wouldn't break the bank as a temporary option until I was in a better position to purchase a new S9. What I didn't expect is that I actually prefer this phone in many areas and have even decided to keep it long-term!Lets start with the good. The phone comes packed with a charging cable, power adapter, earphones and even a silicone case, something the more expensive Galaxy S phones don't include. The phone is very light in weight (but not cheap feeling) and fits perfectly in one hand, another huge advantage for someone like me with small hands.I thought the teardrop shaped notch on the top of the display would end up being a massive distraction, but it's something that I got used to almost instantly. The display is a 1080p AMOLED panel, so the colours are nice and saturated and plenty sharp for the display size. The rear fingerprint sensor is very quick and accurate and is easy to reach. The addition of a headphone jack was very nice to see in an age in which they are becoming rarer. Performance is overall surprisingly fast, and I struggled to find any instance of a noticeable slowdown. The camera is another area which surprised me, although it's not going to compare to a top-of-the-line flagship model, there is plenty of detail and overall it's persmartwatchfectly usable and includes a telephoto lens for nice wide shots. Now onto the cons.-The device is made from plastic, which although is not an issue for me, may be a problem for some people.-The built-in speakers are pretty poor, this is certainly not a device for listening to music out loud without an external speaker.-The power button is a little too close to the volume buttons for my liking, this took me a while to get used to.-As with most Samsung phones, the phone comes pre-installed with a lot of apps you will never use, some of which can't be disabled without rooting.

I bought this phone as it was cheap and it was the only A series phone with a super amoled display and of a decent size so that I can hold it in one hand. I would have paid more if they had a better specs in a smaller phone but it seems these days no one wants to use normal sized phones anymore.I have had a chance to use this phone for 3 months now and I am very happy with it. It has a good battery life (around 50% left by the end of the day), screen as its Samsung amoled it's very good. The fingerprint recognition is good, all other phone functions I.e. call volume, clarity are good too and no issues with that.I had a slight issue with the proximity sensor for a while which seems to have been off all along.I had to watch a you tube video to learn how to turn it on - a little strange that it was off?The reason i have given it 4 stars and not 5 is because of the camera (the only gripe I have about this phone). I am not talking about the front facing camera (I barely use that) but the normal rear facing one. I am slightly dissapointed with the HDR features and the indoor photo quality. The camera seems to over process images, often leading to a strange margins around the subjects in low light settings (which living in the UK it's all the time). Indoor photos also come out very blurry using standard mode (not tweaking the professional functions). Colour reproduction is also below par and no idea why the wide angle lens ruins the image quality so much to the point that it's not even worth having to be honest. Then again it's a £190 phone and offers everything else you need so I am happy with the compromise and would still buy again. I would have paid £50 more for a better camera. I came from samsung s6, its camera was brilliant for such an old phone now.

This was a birthday present for my technophobic husband because his old Windows phone was dying a lingering death and simply couldn't make or receive emails anymore. So after years of listening to moan and complain about Android phones being this, not being that, I quite literally pinned him to the sofa and made him use my Samsung pad. After a full day the winging & whining finally stopped. After 2 days he started to come around and after the 3rd day he started to look for a brand new phone ! (Miracles do happen). After searching for two weeks (believe me on this one, that's a short time for him) he had narrowed it down to 2 phones -this one or the Galaxy A50.After scrutinizing the blurb about the cameras, battery life, processor and anything else he could warble about he picked this one.I love this phone ! It kept him quiet for 3 whole days while he played with it, setting up the systems, pin numbers, transfering data from his old phone etc. etc. He's had it for 4 days now and he is absolutely made up with it. I asked him how he would score the phone and if there was anything he didn't like or couldn't do with it. He gave it an instant 10/10.For him, he's happy, but he's the kind of person who does not play games on a phone at all. He uses it as a phone and to get emails, use the sat nav and read the news, maybe watch some YouTube vids. He says the picture quality of the photos is amazing, and after seeing a quick photo he took of one of the cats, it does look very crisp, clear and sharp. As far as the battery life goes, he spent all day on it yesterday and only had to charge it up that night when he went to bed.It does what he needs it to, there's plenty of space left to download whatever he wants and it wasn't all the expensive - less than £200.

This is an excellent little phone with a premium feel and design for a mid range budget. The phone is smaller then expected, with a 5.9 inch display I was expecting a larger phone then my previous 5 inch display phone but they're actually the same size. The A40 just has a larger screen to body ratio. I'll start with its strongest points.1. Excellent camera quality at this price, the picture quality and clarity is high value for money outperforming typical mid range phones.2. 64gb internal storage which again is very generous at this price point and 50gb remains usable after the OS.3. Screen quality is outstanding with the super AMOLED display.4. Dual SIM slot - again often only seen on high ends phones until now.5.The glasstic rear actually looks better up close than on the photos. (Plastic made to resemble glass).Edit - be careful this glasstic material scratches easily. Already got a few faint micro scratches on the rear that can be seen under light just from placing the phone on a hard surface then the phone being nudged or moved slightly.Minor gripes:1. Battery life is average. Not by any means poor but not great. Still much better than an iPhone, this won't matter as the charging on the A40 is absolutely rapid! Even without fastcharge enabled it'll take 40% up to 90% in about 45mins. With fastcharge enabled even quicker.2. The earspeaker is a bit annoying, so that it doesn't intrude on the display it's ultra slim and compact. During a call you have to hold the phone in just the right position so that the speaker is aligned to the open part of your ear. Otherwise a bit of your ear blocks it and you can't hear anything.3. Loudspeaker is good enough but not overly impressive. Again just a limitation of ultra slim phone design.

Brilliant! Super fast shipping from seller "SKYWISH", arrived several days earlier than estimated (2 days after order). The item was a Samsung A40 (SM-A405F), UK price generally around £219.99 at time of writing. The item ordered was an EU version, which means that it will probably default to another language when you first start it up. Given that it starts with a blank white screen that simply says "Get started" (in whatever language) and has a drop-down selector for language, you just change it to "English (United Kingdom)" and that's literally the only difference to the UK model. (Mine was the Romanian model.) That 2 second action saved me £60 (27%) on the purchase price!Bought for £159.99 at the time of writing. The only other difference is the charger unit, which is the Euro type in the Samsung-sealed box, but the seller includes a separate, new and sealed Samsung-branded UK fast charger. The lead of course is a standard USB-C and is included in the box. So really, you're also gaining a handy Euro USB travel charger! As for the A40 itself, it was chosen over the other 2019 "A" range for the price, the 4GB RAM, the 64GB storage, the better wide angle camera, the fingerprint scanner and the NFC for contactless payments. (An alternative was going to be the Xiaomi Mi A2, another good phone, but it doesn't have NFC). And of course all the usual Samsung refinements. A smooth and fast Android experience.Absolutely cannot fault it for the money!

Bought this phone for a trip to South Africa. Any UK networks are horrendously expensive for anything so plan was to use primary sim for receiving those one time passcodes and other notifications then get a local pay as you go sim for data and calls. In my case a vodacom. You need a South African friend to use their address but once that's done all is good.Swapping from an edge s7 was very easy including moving WhatsApp data via the backup. Something you cannot do with iPhone moving to non iPhone kit. Another nail in apple's coffin.Primary use was data and my partner tethered her phone to this. We had WhatsApp messaging and calls. Emails. Maps. Waze for live traffic navigation. Facebook and messenger too.Of course we also had WiFi in a large number of places so this phone allowed us to stay connected with our UK identities.Screenshot attached shows the two sim identities in use. Very easy to monitor data usage too by one or other sim.We switched off voicemail and diverted all calls to stop incoming call charges too.Very easy to swap between sim for data, calls or texts with both sim receive regardless. The wide angle camera was quite useful especially sharing vistas with those back home and posting on Facebook. It's not a water resistant phone one of the few disadvantages. It is USB c charging so got a dedicated in car charger.Overall very impressed. With my travel i can't see myself going back to a single sim phone.

Almost a UK version! A security label on the box reads as follows:"European Model: This product was originally put on the market by Samsung in a European country which was not the UK. The product was brought into the UK by Brand Smart Ltd which has opened the packaging and made the following changes: (A) removed the original 2-pin Samsung charger, (B) inserted a 3-pin Samsung charger of equivalent specification and, where necessary, changed the internal packaging to secure it, (C) replaced the existing firmware on the product with an English firmware variant, and (D) provided a link to the English language User Guide for the product. Samsung has been notified of these changes."So,it is a UK version because it has been changed! The instructions in the box are in a foreign language (Slovak in my case) with a slip of paper with a QR code and Samsung website printed on it for the user manual in English. That said, it seems to be working fine so far. Nice size, clear screen and nice and slim. Charges really quick compared to my old one. (8% to 100% in little over an hour) Having only had it a few days, I have not used all its functionality so can't really comment on all aspects.

Come on, you all know what a smartphone should do? I was looking for a replacement for my Nexus 6P which like my previous ones eventually couldn't hold more than a couple of hours of charge... so battery life was important.A good camera was second factor and the option to add storage third. The A40 does it all, an excellent camera at least the non-selfie side, only used selfie side once accidentally... I see myself in the mirror in the bathroom in the morning, once a day is enough.Easy to use, though lots of the Samsung apps I put in a cupboard under the stairs... except for Samsung's Smartswitch which made it easy to switch over.Reviewers have commented that it doesn't have a titanium or magnesium frame...give me a break, I'm not going to hammer nails with it... my office calculator doesn't have a magnesium frame either but it still calculates faster than I can.Like the headline says, this is a greatly under-rated phone.... easy to set up and personalize. I'd buy another but I only need one.I use it as a hotspot to my laptop quite a bit and the battery scarcely drops even after hours.

My wife's had a Galaxy A40 for a while, and when my old Galaxy S5 Mini started creaking just a bit too much, it was top of my wish-list for an upgrade. I don't want a tablet in my pocket, I want a smallish phone, and this with its 5.9" display is about the best you can do these days in that respect without crossing to the dark side or gambling on obscure budget brands. Shame it claims no waterproof credentials, but other than that ticks all the everyday boxes. It would be nice if they'd put on a telephoto rather than wide-angle lens for the additional camera, but that's a minor niggle in an otherwise competent bundle.I'd add that my unit is a pukka UK spec model with the correct documentation, charger etc. It was the main reason I ordered direct from Amazon as the seller, rather than a third party, or "fulfilled by Amazon" – especially when the headline seller at the time couldn't be bothered to reply to my query on the topic, which didn't exactly inspire confidence, for the sake of saving a couple of quid.

I bought this to replace a Sony xperia ax1 dual sim phone that had been causing issues for some while - the sims wouldn't stay in, bluetooth problems and phone not able to update. This phone arrived a day earlier than anticipated and was easy to set up straight from the box. Although I couldn't use the easy transfer as this was only relevant to Samsung phones, all my apps and settings downloaded from Google drive. The phone is light and feels lovely to touch. The camera seems good with a lot of options yet to be tried. I now have wifi calling which had never been possible on my old Xperia. The sim card holders seem secure and there is a separate sd card slot for additional memory.I haven't noticed much difference with Android 10 but, unlike my other phone, this one has updated several times already. I purchased this UK version as a 'like new' open box so it was about £40 less than the unopened box version. So far I am very pleased with it and would recommend it.
