Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on the Playstation Vita is a fantastic port. The graphics have translated to the Vita pretty much perfectly, however there are times when some effects look much blockier than they used to, as well as quite a few jaggies espectially on the VR Mission section of Metal Gear Solid 2. Metal Gear Solid 2 also has some slowdown issues when things really heat up but nothing like the original Xbox port and they in no way harm the game. Load times can also be fairly lengthy but nothing excessive. Both run very well save for the issues I pointed out.The controls are also fairly easy to work with except in Metal Gear Solid 2 I think that Konami thinks everyone has 12 fingers. To do a tippy toe shot in first person for example you have to hold R to go into first person, hold square to raise your weapon, then two finger back swipe and hold your fingers on the back touchpad plus still be able to aim. That is just a little overboard and it's quite hard to do consistently. Also the pull ups will drive you nuts with the constant 2 finger swiping on the back touchpad to do them. The item switching can be really annoying as they're selected via touch on the screen and I found myself quite often with the wrong item selected though this problem goes away the more you play it and get used to it. Metal Gear Solid 3's are mostly the same except now when doing a CQC grab you slide your finger along the rear touchpad to slit the enemy's throat and tap it to interrogate. While it sounds good on paper it's really fiddly and I often times found myself interrogating while trying to cut someone's throat thankfully those mechanics aren't used very often. Metal Gear Solid 3 also has Metal Gear 1 and 2 and the 3D camera from Subsistence. The plot lines and game play are where these games shine. Both are intact and still amazing and they still manage to wow me after all these years and now they're on a handheld wows me even more. The sheer amount of content on this cartridge is mind boggling. The VR and Alternative Missions alone are about 30 hours to 100%, plus the Snakes Tales are 1-2 hours a piece, plus the main plot line is easily 8-9 hours if you watch all the cutscenes and that's just Metal Gear Solid 2!All in all it's definitely a worthy purchase in this time of Vita game drought as it will give you alot to play for many hours and they've all survived the transition pretty much intact with only a few shortfalls that don't really hurt the games that much.

Okay, now I know those of us interested in MGS2+3 have probably played the games multiple times across multiple platforms by this point, most notably probably on the initial MGS HD collection release early in 2012 some months before this Vita version came out, and while the removal of Peacewalker HD from the collection for Vita is disappointing, I gotta say the lower price point and simply incredible handheld transfer done with these titles makes up for it in my eyes. Having these two classics so readily available in handheld form is something that is not to be sniffed at.The two games (Plus the two bonus ports of the original Metal Gear 1 and 2 included on MGS3) are more or less replicated in their entirety here (Well,as 'entire' as they were on the MGS HD collection at least, which made some content cuts to MGS3) and still look fantastic. The framerate isn't as consistently high as it was on the home console version of the collection sadly (MGS2 switches between 60 frames per second and 30 depending on the area you are in, and MGS3 is locked at a constant 30fps throughout.), and some of the control changes can be awkward (Some of the touch screen stuff isn't exactly intuitive, but works well for the most part I guess). Those issues aside, there is very very little not to like here. Full, uncompromised versions of two of the all time greats in a budget release handheld title? Well worth it you ask me, and the "transfarring" feature that allows you to move saves between the Vita and PS3 versions of the collection may prove useful for some (Not me though, I never bothered with it). If nothing else I gotta say it was a real shock going from the horrible looking, jerky 3DS port of MGS3 which seemed to run on permanent slowdown and was priced as a full RRP title to the smooth, crispy clean, nigh on perfect replication on display in this budget priced collection. Not really much else to add here. If you ever wanted handheld versions of MGS2 and 3, then this is as good as it's ever likely to get. There are a couple of minor annoyances with regard to controls, but nothing even remotely game breaking. This release has on a single little cartridge (Or card... or whatever they call those things) the two complete games with all the content of the Substance/Subsistence re-releases included and it is bargain priced. Why would you NOT want this title if you're a Metal Gear fan with an itch to scratch? Buy it now you fools!

I won't go into detailed reviews of the two games here. They are two of the most highly rated games of their era, and whilst they feel clunky now, it's damn fun to play them either again, or for the first time. They're both well worth playing on any system. As for playing them on the Vita itself they are excellent. Smooth as silk, looking a lot better than the PS2 originals with their nice HD make over, an the touch controls are perfect for weapon selection. Be warned that whilst the game encourages you to push the analogue sticks carefully to sneak, they just aren't large enough to do this effectively. Thankfully there is a sneak button to compensate. Both games feature a ton of cut scenes, with Metal Gear Solid 2 suffering from a near fatal overdose of them, but damned if they don't have a certain charm when you can use the touch screen to mess around with the camera. Be warned that their length means you won't be able to play it for short bursts. This is a long train ride killer, not a quick bus journey. So why only four stars? Well something is missing. All the other ports include Metal Gear Peace Walker, which holds the distinction of being my personal favorite in the series. This one does not (also why no Portable Ops in any of the packages?). The games come in in under 3gb so there was plenty of room for Peace Walker to fit. The omission seems baffling. Until you realize Peace Walker is backwards compatible on the Vita, and Konami figured they might as well wring more money out of you whilst they're at it. (it being on the PSN does not compensate, the game is blurry as hell on the Vitas screen and no proper analogue configuration is a PAIN)Still, obvious missing game aside what you get is still a superb package, and if you don't own them anywhere else defiantly pick them up. I can't imagine Konami will be winning anymore fans with their lousy buisness practices though.

Edited from my original review as I've now got the hang of the controls.Basically you get a lot for your money here and it impressive that they have managed to cram two highly reviewed games onto one cartridge. Visually they may look dated, but they look beautiful and impressive still. It can be a bit hard to see what is happening on screen, as the smaller screen doesn't lend itself 100% to the game but its still nice to look at.The controls work spot on... once you get used to the shooting mechanic of having to stand still and go into 1st person perspective and then holding square and releasing. Its not perfect and its a bit fiddly, but you adjust. The only thing which still gets me a bit annoyed is when trying to do an "action" like climbing a block,or hiding on a corner. Its not really clear when you can do these or how. Solid seems to just slide against a wall when I don't want him to, or doesn't climb a box when id expect. But those are small issues with an otherwise good and deep game. There are A LOT of cut scenes which can do on for a long time, buts its to be expected from a story heavy game. For an old game which has been remastered and re-released for people who didn't play it... like myself... i'm impressed.**Update after getting to the second last boss in MG2**I've now hung up the game and won't go back any time soon.My above comments mention bad controls, but those controls were tolerable once you adjusted.Unfortunately due to the nature of the bad controls + this stupidly difficult boss I have now given up.The boss fight itself is fun and I have no issue with a challenge. But this is a challenge compounded by controls which would have been bad-at-the-time.This game is fun until you get into the boss fight at the end.

This is my favourite game for Vita, and I've played a few (including Rayman which is amazing). I have about 10 hours logged so far against the second MGS and it's made me realise how brilliant some older games can still be today. For the record I played MGS1 back in the day on a PS1.The games on this collection aren't perfect, there are some negative points to be aware of: the controls can be clunky, especially trying to jump onto crates. It's also too easy to back up against a wall when you don't mean to. The cut scenes can be very long, I've had one about 15mins so far and I've heard some are longer - but you can skip them. The load times aren't great, and there's no way to quit out or reload a save, you have to get killed and choose not to continue which takes a while. The story is pretty ridiculous and has character names that just don't seem possible! But all the negative points can be overlooked once you start playing and getting into it. The game is mainly stealth, and it's just so much fun. You get lots of options on how to tackle situations, which is really satisfying, and there's tonnes of depth to the games with all the items. They might be older games, but the graphics are great, as is the sound. I can't recommend this highly enough to people with a Vita who want a deeper, more mature gameplay experience.

If you've ever played an MGS before you'll know what to expect. If not MGS is one of the finest stealth/action series of all time and has some of the greatest boss fights of all time - and some of the longest cutscenes too!.MGS2 being the oldest of the 2 is a bit old but still a classic and still looks good upgraded to HD. After all these years I forgot how long the cutscenes are but the game tells the great story brilliantly!.MGS3 is even better. Even by today's standards it looks good! Especially here in its HD glory. It has more bare able cutscenes but also some of my fondest boss battles of all time.It is also a long game.In fact considering you're paying under £20 you're getting great value as there is easily 30+ hours of play time here in the main story lines alone. Outside of the main game both games include a wealth of content. Likely to keep you going for months. If I was to complain about one thing - other than the annoying exclusion of Peace Walker from the console copy - its that it's not the most portable friendly game and I often find myself having to pause on cutscenes (or I'd miss my stop!!).But that's a small complaint for 2 fantastic games!!!.

Ever since i can remember first playing the original Metal Gear Solid. That game seamed almost like a dream for me to be able to take with me on a handheld.4 years after the original the sequel finally hit shelves after massive hype and long waiting time.It would be another 10 years, but finally. Now i have MGS2 and also the even MORE brilliant MGS3 with me wherever i take my vita.As for the games. Both vere Triple A games when they came out and they still are. Thank to solid controls. The graphics now also look even better thanks to the HD work they have done. The Vita version looks just as beautiful as the console HD version. I have both of course. If you're a fan of MGS you will know what to expect here. The games still look, sound and play great and its amazing now to have them in HD 16:9 aspect ratio aswell, The cutscenes can now be selected to be played on either fullscreen on letterboxed. Both games run great without any problems on vita. as for the controls. You use the touchpad to access your weapons. For those wondering about the lack for the extra shoulder buttons. This works perfectly. Ive finished both games several times without any problems.

The Metal Gear Solid games hold a special place in a lot of gamers' hearts. Many, including myself, grew up on these instant classics. One of the biggest surprises from this port is the quality of the audio, most specifically with MGS3. The jungle atmosphere comes to life through Vita's tiny stereo speakers and mimics a slight feel of surround sound, while the breathtaking soundtrack by Harry Gregson-Williams in both games is clear and extremely fitting. It's definitely one of those situations where the music has the ability to immerse you in the world of Snake and truly add to the setting of the game. The Vita edition of MGS:HD also offers a new twist on the old classic controls. For example, the inventory is controlled using the front touch screen while certain actions such as peeking around corners or performing CQC (Close Quarters Combat) actions are executed with the rear touchpad. While the inventory system is extremely easy and responsive to use, the advanced CQC actions using the rear touch pad can take a bit of getting used to.If your a true MGS fan BUY THIS worth the money it's a timeless classic

I rented this game from lovefilm and it took me a LONG time to return it. I had around 17 hours game play on MGS2. And around 18 and a half on MGS3. My first playthroughs on both games. The graphics look superb on the vita, really impressive. Stories of both games is excellent and very very good. 2 of the best games i have played. I had played MGS4 on the ps3 as my first metal gear game, and i want to play more and more. It's a great series and i found myself on the metal gear wiki wanting to learn more and more about the characters and events of the series. There's undoubtedly more replay value in the games, unlocking uniforms and camouflage's, weapons etc. Although i have finished both of the games,i even want to buy it now considering how much fun it was. I am disappointing, however that amazon have suddenly jacked up the price. It was £19.99, and considering i had a £20 gift voucher, i was going to purchase it, it is now £26.45. Still worth the money, just a surprise, which makes other sellers, cheaper alternatives. All in all, 2 great, great games.

This is one of those feats that always sets a new benchmark - back in the day I recall the PS2 version of Metal Gear Solid 2.. and back then it was a stunning new achievement for computer games. Metal Gear Solid 3 game later and set the benchmark a shade higher. So when they announced it was coming to Vita, I bought it preordered it, more to see if all those years of 360 use had changed my perception of these classic PS2 games. Thankfully I was not disappointed, they are truly superb conversions, and shows just how good these games where back in the day - they have just about stood the test of time.I even went on to download Metal Gear Solid the PS1 game after playing both of these, and that is also excellent, although only available direct from PSN.Anyway, if your new to Metal Gear and own a vita then buy this package its worth it. If like me you want to reminisce on the past, then buy it anyway.

This package kind of speaks for itself really. So what if it doesn't include Peace Walker, you can buy that on the PSN Store anyways and plus it probably wouldn't have fit all on once single memory card. The Xbox 360 required a seperate disc just for MGS: Peace Walker.. can't expect Konami to fit two discs worth of content that would be on an Xbox 360 inside one singular little chip the size of your thumbnail. But anyway, if you're a hardcore fan of the series and want to play these classics on the go. If you've heard good things about the franchise and wanna try it out then by all means. But don't expect cover based shooting, over the shoulder aiming and all that modern day stuff. This is old school stuff. The story is AMAZING, David Hayter as a voice actor is brilliant and the cut-scenes are perfectly crafted and the visuals still to this day impress me.

I've been playing MGS since Metal Gear Solid on the ps1. It would have been nice to see it here, but alas. MGS 2 and Snake Eater are two stone cold classic video games. To have these on the go is a real treat. I've played them both many times, and will probably do so many more. There are few games with such interesting but complex plots that wouldn't look out of place in a best selling thriller novel. The game play, particularly in Snake Eater, offer the best stealth game play that has ever been put to video gaming. The conversion to the Vita is excellent using the touch screen for the side menu options seamlessly. If you've never played these titles now is the time, plus buy MGS off of the PS Store too.If you're a fan and own the console versions then get this too, there's nothing like dipping back into MGS while on holiday.

I am currently playing MGS1 on the vita which looks sweet btw and then i will move on to sons of liberty, but i still think its amazing that we have games like this or jak and daxter on the go if i could only go back 16 years and show my younger self a portable version of a game i loved on ps2, i have no complaints on this game atall its perfect it has 2 great games with amazing stories, beautiful graphics and ott voice acting and cutscenes.Ive always wanted a decent portable version of mgs 2 or 3 i know the 3ds has snake eater but compaired to vita it is crap in my opinion. So what are you noobs waiting for go buy a ps vita, buy mgs 1 off the ps store and peace walker and get this title.Start with snake eater then peace walker then mgs 1 and finally sons of liberty a s***ton of hours to be had.

I had an absolute blast playing through MGS2 and MGS3 but it's just a shame that Peace Walker wasn't included. I have Peace Walker on my PSP but it would've been nice to play through once again with both analogue sticks. The game uses the main touch screen to select between weapons and items on the drop down menus which was good. However, the game didn't make much use (if any) of the rear touch pad. Kinda makes me wonder if there are going to be many games that even bother to use it.Overall it was a good purchase and the combined playtime of these two titles will give you plenty of Metal Gear hours! I would have given it 5 out of 5 but it loses 1 star for not including Peace Walker.I only picked it up because the price dropped down to £20.

I don't really have much to say about this collection, if you like Metal Gear Solid and like me played them a long time ago and you want to refresh your memory get this game and if you have never played MGS then get it as well because it won't be a disspointing experience even if you don't like the type of game. You will spend between 8~9 hours on MGS2 and 10~12 on MGS3 more less so yeah..... buy it!I only gave this title 4 stars because I don't understand how the HD collections for PS3 & XBOX360 include MGS Peace Walker game which I don't know was removed from the vita pack, cost 4~5 pounds less than the PS Vita edition. This score has nothing to do with those 2 games, they are excellent, the problem as I said, it's with the price.
