I've reviewed this very late but with the arrival of blackops which I believe so far to not have lived up to this game, has made me remember the pros and cons of this game in detail. This game is a thunderous achievement much as the original Modern Warfare (MW) was. The high budget values, experience and perhaps pressure to come up with the best game ever have really pushed Infinity ward to achieve a real feat worthy of long term recognition.CampaignYears after the events of MW a follow up story has you again playing as various squad members for different fighting forces. You're taken to various diverse locations to fight which at times is reminiscent of old FPS games where you face a classic set of environments (snowy one, desert one, urban one, all that was missing was a lava one?). Every location has fancy colourful graphics instead of atmospheric realism which for me is a slight flaw making it a less tangible conflict. While there are many excellent missions, I never felt the same atmosphere as in the mission `All Ghillied up' in MW, though arguably the airport mission invokes negative emotions like no other (I was unable to fire a single shot). The action is relentless while the political tension subtely shines through. In what seems more like storyline from 24 than Black Hawk Down, The story still manages to be hardhitting, though at times not obvious to follow.SpecOpsThe Challenges mode really for 2 players to work through mainly has you replaying strategically involved moments from the campaign with some targets to achieve, as well as a few new set pieces such as assaulting bridges. This is excellent in prolonging the life of the game as it truly rewards working together with a friend especially on higher difficulties. I will be playing this even now as blackops has this excluded.MultiplayerIW have really tried to evolve the game more than anyone would have expected. Some of the best additions include the extremely satisfying customisable killstreaks (a nuke at 25 kills!) to really entice players to succeed, obviously this may exclude less expert players but for them there's the opportunity to call in random streaks via dropped care packages. While good for accessibility, arguably it upsets the balance of the game slightly, if one team gets a powerful random item it can completely shift the balance of the game irrespective of the team skill level. A major oversight was to not have customisable killstreak rewards for each of your custom classes as the deathstreaks do, due to the one man army perk interfering, despite some maps really hampering the ability to get a higher kill streak. The weapons are mostly new, including new types such as blast shields and stinger missiles. A bad choice in my view has been to allow more powerful weapons as secondary weapons, such as shotguns and automatics, which I feel overpowers players too much such as snipers now being able to carry extremely powerful short range weapons too. There's an immense amount of challenges to complete now, almost too many as you could feasibly get to the 70th level before you prestige completing under 10 weapons challenges (over 30 to choose from), unlike MW where you would have incentive to try a lot more to get the Experience points. None the less it gives you diverse challenge avenues which can only be a good thing in the long term life of the game! Some of the levels are absolutely excellent, suitable for all weapons, rewarding teamwork. But the level design on several levels has taken a slight turn for the worse since MW. Where as before we had wonderfully balanced levels with some good stronghold locations, we now have a few too many instances of places to camp, windows, hidden corners and holes, with players scattered all over the map. In MW campers would be dealt with swiftly as there were generally limited places to hide, experienced players could discern exactly which camping spot a camper had been in where but that is more difficult now, particularly tough if a whole team sets up in camping spots. As much as one may hate camping, one is forced to do it sometimes, gone are the MW days where you could run amok while sprinting round corners with a silencer. Even experienced MW players will die a lot when they first approach this game unless they adapt. Unfortunately often, Fortune favours the camper.Still not perfect is the online lag. I wasn't expecting it to be fixed, just for the consistency to improve slightly. You think you've shot some one a lot but you still die, their killcam shows that they saw you much earlier than you thought. Or you've been spotted, you take cover before they've fired, a second later you die by their bullets which the killcam shows as having hit you while you were out in the open. What exacerbates this situation is the occasional inequality in lag experienced from game to game sometimes has you unable to get many kills, other games let you walkover the entire enemy team even with your skill unchanged. Couple this with trying to face campers who do actually see you before you see them and sometimes its an infuriating session.OVERALLStill the best looking/playing game you can get on your Xbox. The single player will accelerate you from the sneakiest snipes to the noisiest firefights. An excellent attempt by IW to evolve their last hit instead of riding its success, though its new additions are slightly offset by some new issues. I cannot say it is perfect, but it is an accomplished requisite piece of art to own. The real injustice is that Infinity Ward no longer function and the real brains on this project cannot put their name to a future call of duty game.

Well, it's finally here. Modern Warfare 2 has been described as the most anticipated game of the year, or maybe even the decade. The question is have the months of waiting been worth it?To put it simply, yes. I bought this game for the multiplayer, and after about three hours play can already tell that I will be on nothing else for at least the rest of this year, and probably a lot of the next. Infinity Ward have taken everything that made multiplayer so great in Modern Warfare and added it and tweaked it enough to keep it fresh, but not so much that the core experience is unrecognisable. So killstreaks are still there, but now you can customise what you get for them. Challenges are present and correct, and now include perk challenges. Gun attachments are back, with greater range and variation, for example extended magazines as an attachment which replaces the bandolier perk. This adds even more depth to the multiplayer, as if you want to create a specific class you might actually have to put some thought into it, for example 'Do I want to use the bling perk to add a hearbeat sensor AND a silencer if it means I'll show up on UAV for a stealth class' and so on. This leads to so many different class variations I couldn't even begin to list them. Rest assured though, the multiplayer is still as perfectly balanced as ever, with death streaks making it easier for newcomers to the game to get ahead, and the care package killstreak perk making it possible to unleash all kinds of airborne fury on the battlefield. The one reservation I have so far (and it is the only, small one in relation to the multiplayer) is that the Sleight of Hand perk and Stopping Power can be used together - not a problem with SMG or Assault Rifle classes, but I feel it spoils an LMG heavy support class slightly. It was an interestingly tactical class in Modern Warfare because you had to hang back a little providing covering fire, take down choppers etc, because if you dashed around with a gun that size you'd never reload in time with people in the next room. This time round that's not a concern, which detracts from the more unique character of that class. Oh, and for some reason the updated MP5 (the MP5K) feels a bit rubbish. Don't know why, just does! The new mode, Spec Ops, is good - essentially bite sized pieces of campaign set to a time limit with different objectives - wave defence, stealth and evasion, run and gun, etc. It is a shame that Arcade Mode is absent though, as Mile High Club in the last game turned into a rather intense competition on my leaderboard!Maps are varied, with many of them much larger than in MW. I haven't had chance to play all of them yet, but Scrapyards combination of open stretches and small buildings has won me over already. So, single player, or "Keith Vaz's New Nightmare" as it should perhaps be called. Already a storm is brewing amongst concerned parents, MPs etc over a level in the game. All I'll say is this. If your child is under 18, don't buy them this game. Simple as that. It's not suitable, as this particular level is graphic and intensely disturbing. I felt uncomfortable playing the level, and will be skipping it when I return on a higher difficulty. Don't get me wrong - you're supposed to feel uncomfortable, but taken out of context I could see why people would have a problem with it. Younger children do not possess suitably developed emotional frameworks to fully comprehend what they are doing in this situation, so shouldn't play it. The option to skip a level, shown at the start of the game, is for this level. If you are of a particularly sensitive nature I would recommend it.The campaign should take (according to ign) about 7 hours on Regular. Personally I did it in five and a half. I don't say that to boast - there were still the usual bits where I would get pinned down for ages, but the game just isn't that long, which is disappointing, and the reason this gets four out of five overall. Action set pieces are good, but not on the same level as Modern Warfare. Infinity Ward seem to have gone down the route of making it faster, bigger and louder, which doesn't do it any favours. Still, the missions are varied, however I did get to the end and say to myself 'Wow. I did not follow any of that'. To call the plot convoluted would be an understatement. Many levels left me asking 'Who was that guy?' 'What was that thing?' or 'What the hell just happened. I ended up condensing the plot for myself - the guys shooting at you are bad. They want their magic box back, as far as I can tell. Anyway, the music is done by Hans Zimmer, and Lance Henrikksen (short cop in Terminator, Bishop in Aliens) does one of the voices, so top talent is on board for the sound, visuals look as good as you would expect, but in terms of the lasting impact of the campaign, Modern Warfare it isn't. It lacks the stand out moments - there's no Ghillies in the Mist here.In summary then, buy this game. The story might be a bit daft, but if you're anything like you'll keep coming back for the multiplayer.

Buy it. Simple as, everything that follows, for better or worse, this game provides a great experience, fun, varied, engaging and just all rounds awesome. The story follows on seven years after CoD 4, Soap is now head of Task Force 141, an international special forces unit. After a terrorist attack on Zakhaev international airport Russia invades America as retaliation, but there are underlying motives. As Roach you help Soap and the mysterious Ghost in the task force as you try to uncover the truth, meanwhile your Ranger character tries to defend Washington.I could go on about controls and level design and such but by now you should know that CoD maintains its high standard,if anything the modifications to the HUD and the increased variety in weapons and objectives means it's even better. On the level design front I have one example. There's one level (no spoilers) where you enter a room before being hit by some rocks. When you have the rocks pulled off you appear in a set place in the room. On my first run through, the run that really counts, I stood naturally in exactly the same spot I woke up in. only after many reruns, where I mucked about and pestered the NPCs, did I realise I always awoke in the same place. Whilst there are set pieces like the aforementioned the levels are still relatively uninterrupted. A number of them provide multiple routes or an open area with many objectives yet you always know where to go. The addition of a marker on your objective helps to maintain direction and flow as do the crisp, clean graphics. All in all just what you'd expect by now.A point worth mentioning is that where CoD 4 had you in just a handful of different environments this one has a vast range that keep every moment fresh. They range from the snowy mountains and downtown Washington to an oil rig and the favelas in Rio.So now the downsides, which sadly there are a few of. Many won't care but those that like a good story with believable characters may be disappointed. Whereas CoD 4 had me caring for each NPC and Soap (the playable character) in this game you don't spend enough time with anyone to truly have them grow on you, not even the main playable character Roach. The characters that you do come to love are those that were in CoD 4, hell to finally see Soap fight alongside me was frankly badass. The other issue is that the story is basically bananas. It falls into that trap that so many succumb to, the twist. If CoD 4 showed anything it's that games don't need to rely on the twist, strong well-paced narrative can be simply revealed, you know like in all other Medias. So there's a sudden revelation but it soon wears off and leaves a bad taste in your mouth. This is all forgivable though as the presence of Soap and the shear variety kept me engaged throughout, never knowing where I was going next or what I'd be doing. The narrative still does a reasonable job of connecting the levels just in a more ridiculous story arc than I'm used to for the series. This leads onto the final issue that sits less well. This is a series that prided itself on realism and respect for what soldiers really go through but somehow amongst the new tech and high adrenaline gameplay it has somewhat lost its way.Anyway, I still feel none of this is a deal breaker. You love FPS', you'll love this. You love CoD, you'll love this. You love multiplayer, you get the picture.Oh one last thing, though the campaign is short it does come with a great single-player/co-op experience in Spec Ops where you can tackle specific variants on scenarios in the modern warfare series alone or with a friend. This may have the most long lasting appeal; it has a variety of scenarios, different difficulties and achievements tied to it. So just to reiterate, buy this game. The hardened edition as well as providing a nice steel book case and art booklet comes with the complete call of duty classic free to download in glorious high def onto your xbox or ps3 and is worth the extra price. The Final Word: More fun than Disney and Christmas ... Combined! Shame about the story.

Like millions of others, COD: Modern Warfare quickly became one of, if not thee best MMORPG around and we all found ourselves spending more just a couple of hours each night glued to the unbelievable online mode. I think overall i'd spent something ridiculous like 22 days on the game. Unfortunately for Infinity Ward, they'd set themselves a massive benchmark with the game and were always going to struggle to create a sequel that beat or just matched the excitement Modern Warfare brought to gamers. Could Modern Warfare 2 of been better than it's predecessor, maybe. Is it? Quite simply, no.Single player, as many others have said, is simply too short and does leave you feeling a bit cheated when the game reaches its climax what seems so early on.Whilst the story is compelling, the game-play itself is no different what so ever. You don't really do anything new and to be honest, Modern Warfare provided more variation with certain levels like controlling the AC130 and operating grenade turrets. Sadly in Modern Warfare 2, you can play as a terrorist or drive a snowmobile for a couple of minutes to a chopper which to be honest, is not exactly what I was hoping for. It's still a good single player, but don't expect anything new at all. Now, multiplayer. I myself didn't get the game till Christmas so I was rather behind everyone else. I'd heard people say that 'oh it's amazing', 'it's better than 4' and the like, however I really don't see how or why now. Ok, yes, it still is a fantastic multiplayer game but it's also become extremely frustrating. 4 did have it's issues that I would find annoying such as martyrdom, the millions of frags as well games ending when the host quit or connection got 'interrupted.' Although Infinity Ward have attended to these issues, new ones have been created that are just as frustrating. More and more people are using famous grenade launcher attachment (otherwise known as the 'noobtube') which is extremely annoying as you find yourself being blown up from all angles without a chance to move or anything. It's something that should have been taken out the game I think. The killstreak system has now changed also. Instead of the 3/5/7 which worked perfectly well, there's now about 15 different killstreak rewards which you can customize meaning you'll find yourself hiding inside a lot of the time, running away from missile strikes or chopper's or finding a spot to call in a care package. It just seems like they've gone a step too far. This also applies to the perks, there's far too many perks as well now which just seems like it's been overdone. The maps, some I think are great, however a lot I think are terrible. Ok, there are a few good ones like Sub Base, Scrapyard, Invasion and Rundown, but the rest are all just too big, boring and favour snipers and/or campers. It ruins the game when you get people sitting at the back of the map with a thermal ACOG as another person sits by a doorway waiting for everyone to come through. Yes, people sniped and camped in 4, however the new maps just seem to encourage it more and more people are doing it meaning those that like to run around and find people (like me) don't stand much of a chance and will be sniped within 3 seconds of spawning. And being someone who spent so much time on the previous multiplayer, it's annoying to have this wait and the maps be a major disappointment. There are a few other annoying things as well, such as you'll be entered into a game just as you're about to lose which isn't really fair and you'll sometimes just get disconnected randomly, which is definitely not my connection. So, Modern Warfare 2. It is worth buying? Yes. Will you play it a lot? Probably. Is it better and more enjoyable than 4? No.Your call.

In a word: "wow".I was cautious playing this game, with so much hype surrounding it. But all the hype is deserved, it really is.Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is just FUN! It's like they took everything that was annoying about games, threw it away, and created the best game to grace the Xbox 360. Really, I'm not hyperbolic, this is the best game I've played on the Xbox 360.The cinematic feeling as you are swept through this game is immense. Never before have I shrieked with joy like I did when I played this game. Where do I start? Shooting from helicopters, snipering from a snowy ridge, dodging falling helicopters, blowing up helicopters... I could go on,but I really don't want to spoil the unadulterated joy of this game unfolding. Okay, one more point: guiding missiles to destroy your enemies nearby, and seeing the buildings explode in your point of view is immense... and led to that shrieking I mentioned above. What I adore about this game is the do away with what annoys me about so many other games. I hate failing at something, then having to do 10 minutes again. Then maybe fail again, and do it again. It's tedious repeating stuff over and over. But not with COD: MW2. Save points are frequent, so you don't end up re-doing stuff and you just get on with the game picking up almost where you left off!I also like you don't have to faff around with health packs and ammo. How many times have you been in a game, shot someone, see their gun but you can't pick it up. That's madness. But not in COD: MW2. You just pull back to cover to recover, and if you run out of ammo just pick up a gun from anyone you've killed nearby. Let the gameplay continue, not having to worry about stupid gameplay mechanics! The game is quite short, and I imagine some may complain about this. But you have to realise: other games are made longer by their mechanics that make you play bits over and over again. So I much prefer COD: MW2, where the gameplay is short and sweet and not extended by tedious replay.Amazingly, for such a scripted game, it doesn't feel scripted. It isn't like "press a button, the things come out to destroy you" that you get with so many FPS. With this game they sweep you along so quickly, you don't realise it's scripted. Even down to the linear levels which are part of a game like this, you're so busy running to your next point, caught up in the action, that you don't notice you're being guided by the level design. It's just so immersive. And the AI, oh the AI. Amazing, truly amazing. In close quarter combat, it is so unpredictable. Even to the point where if you die, and repeat that part, the other characters act quite differently every time.So do I have any complaints? Well no, none at all. One grumble is they need different audio level controls, so I can raise the voice levels compared to the other sounds -- it's sometimes hard to hear orders. The other is that the story was sometimes lost on me, as so much was going on. Also as a suggestion, it'd be nice if your decisions had ramifications. There's a scene where you go through the airport shooting people, in the widely publicised scene which actually is the weakest part of the game. But it has no ramifications. In the next game I'd like to see "shoot these people, or a school blows up" - real through provoking decision making where your choices have consequences, as in this game they don't.But as you can see, my grumbles are minor. My praise for this game is immense. It blows always all the tired, tedious elements of other games and replaces them with shear, unadulterated, fun gameplay.I recommend this game wholeheartedly, and I haven't even played multi player yet!

Following up to the first Modern Warfare and meeting expectations created by it was always going to be a tough order. No game could live up to the level of hype that was built up and MW2 is a prime target for slating by disappointed fans that feel it doesn't live up to expectations. However, despite not meeting the unrealistic hype it is still a very accomplished gaming experience and certainly one of the better games of 2009.The single player campaign is a bit of a mixed bag and certainly not helped by the ill-conceived and badly executed "No Russian" level that has courted so much controversy in the media. However it is the most explosive and cinematic in the Call of Duty franchise so far and certainly picks up from the template of MW1 balancing the tension of sneaking through an enemy encampment with silenced weapons to all out shooting sections and breath-taking set pieces that I wouldn't want to spoil here. The campaign is pretty much high quality throughout however the plot is diabolical with little framing and exposition explaining the radical jumps between locations. It's also too short with a play time of between 5-8 hours which is only made longer with a Veteran difficulty play-through. It's a lot easier this time as thankfully the developer has decided to do away with enemy respawning. The campaign sadly lacks a co-op mode however Infinity Ward have provided players who like to work together with a Spec Ops mode that gives small 5-10 minute burst challenges. These range from surviving a series of enemy waves, getting from A to B under fire, or stalking enemies with silenced weapons. Whilst they are all playable in single player they really come alive in multi-player and on higher difficulties require two skilled players to work together well. There are even a few 2 player only challenges which put on player in a vehicle providing cover for the other player. Gunning from an AC-130 whilst your comrade makes his way through the farmhouse area from COD4 is particularly noteworthy. Whilst it doesn't entirely make up for a lack of campaign co-op it does provide a strong challenge and entertaining experience. The main pull of Modern Warfare 2 and where most people will spend their time long after the co-op and campaign are completed is the multiplayer versus mode. Whilst it can take months to flesh out all the nuances of the maps there does seem to be a certain leniency towards the camping/sniping way of play in the design with many corridors, windows and angles to hide/shoot from. This can make playing some matches an exercise in getting repeatedly killed by people you can't even see. There are however a truckload of new perks and gun attachments to play with and a rebalancing of the old ones giving many ways to approach each match. As with the first MW1 it can be extremely frustrating for new players with constant deaths being inevitable. This is partly balanced by new death streaks that give player's perks if they die too many times. Whilst nobody would really want to "achieve" these they do certainly help new-comers adjust with health perks, last stands and stealing the class of the player that just killed you. There are plenty of kill streak perks available now and they're fully customisable. Whilst a great touch and a slice of heaven for veteran players they can be too over-powered and being hemmed in to buildings by attack choppers and AC-130s can be an all too common occurrence.Overall Modern Warfare 2 is a very accomplished product, it does have its faults but is still without doubt one of the essential games of the year and is a must for any first-person shooter fans.

I'm not going to say this is the greatest game of all time because it's all really a matter of opinion, what I am going to say is that this is my favourite game of all time. This game takes everything COD4 did and improves upon it in every way.First up the single player campaign, now you may have read from several other reviews on this site and else where that the campaign is far too short, all I can say is that it took me about 7-8 hours to complete on Veteran and then another hour to run through on Easy to collect the hidden Intel, if that sounds too short to you then so be it, but what I will say is that the quality of the missions are second to none. From escorting jeeps through the tight streets of South America with mounted machine guns,to a desperate escape through rooftops in which you have no weapons at all, to close quarters fighting in the caves of Afghanistan there is a lot of variation in the missions despite being a FPS and the quality throughout never dips with amazing set pieces and incredible graphics and sound which immerse you in the game. Now for those who thought the single player campaign was too short Spec Ops should provide them with more than enough to occupy their time.Essentially smaller missions which can be completed either solo or co-op (with the exception of 2 missions which have to be done co-op) these are real challenges when put on Veteran difficulty, (which you were surely want to do in order to get all those lovely achievements).I have completed all of these missions on Veteran (hooray) and it took me and my brother around 13 hours to complete, mostly due to the really hard missions which crop up towards the end involving Juggernauts (essentially super soldiers with huge levels of armour)Overall these missions are very good and whilst some of them are rehashes of scenarios from the main game they are all extremely challenging and a lot of fun to do, in particular the missions involving the AC-130 and a mission entitled Wreckage which involves you destroying vehicles as quickly as possible with an assortment of rocket launchers and grenade launchers. Now finally for those who still haven't had enough there is the Multiplayer, quite simply this is the most amazing Multiplayer ever taking everything that COD4 did and making it bigger and better. One complaint that you may have read a lot about is that Kill Streak rewards are overpowered and un-balance the game, this is quite frankly a load of rubbish, if some one on the opposing team calls in a Chopper then you can either hide in doors or use a rocket launcher to blow it out of the sky (and get a nice XP reward to boot) and if you have the perk Cold Blooded equipped then you are invisible to the Choppers and Harriers etc and can't be killed!Another complaint I have seen given is that the guns are not balanced and that riot shields are stupid, as with the helicopters, Harriers etc, everything can be countered if you have the right set up of weapons, i.e. if someone has a riot shield use a grenade launcher/rocket launcher against them, it's not rocket science and if you play the game according to the situation then you will have a lot of fun and will enjoy unlocking all the cool titles and emblems of which there are many to collectOn a side note the first time you call in a Tactical Nuke has to rank as one of my favourite moments in gaming. All in all this game sets a new bench mark in gaming and will become the cornerstone against which all FPS's in the future will be measured against, quite where Infinity Ward go from here is anyone's guess.

Ok that's quite a bold statement to make in my title and a good few of you are probably screaming rubbish at your screen, but let me tell you why. I'm going to use some comparisons with Bad Company " here as I have also played it extensively and it seems to be this games main rival. This review is going to focus solely on mulitplayer so if you want to know about single player and co-op then skip to another review.Control:- Control in COD is slick and easy, and getting stuck on scenery is a minimal problem, this in stark contrast with BC2 'fidgity' controls. I can't seem to find a sensitivity on that I like and trying to climb through and over stuff as well as going up stairs can be a little awkward.Spawning:- COD's spawn system is much better than compared to BC2 where Spawn killing, camping is a problem as well as the annoying habit of other people suddenly spawning in next to someone you are shooting at just as you run out of ammo.Gameplay:- Yeah BC2 is nice with it's destructable environment and big maps, but I like the compactness of the COD maps as well as the fact it's for the majority you and a gun which is surely what a FPS is all about at it's roots. No blowing apart a building with a tank or helicopter to get to the bad guys, you've got to get in their up close and personal for some good old intense CQB!! Yes BC2 has the realism but COD has the intensity, you are never far from the action.Although COD multiplayer is pretty much all team based there is not such the dependency on your team mates like you have in BC2, you can get along just fine on your own. You'll also probably hear people complaing about perks like people with lightweight and commando pro, running into a hail of your bullets and stabbing you. For the optimal most fun and challenging experience in this game I recommend that you play hardcore mode only, which eliminates the effectivness of most of the things that annoy gamers in COD.The one massive downside to this game however is the fact that in most on-line modes you have game chat only, no party chat, so if your friends are on something else, even a different game mode on MW2 you cannot talk to them, very annoying.Killstreak rewards are nicely varied and also easy to deal with, if you have the right class setup. I like the way you can unlock various titles and badges to show off your ingame acheivements.Nice vairety of maps although the downloadable content has rightly been criticised for being overly expensive given that some of the mpas you get have been pulled from COD4. The time waiting between games can also be frustratingly long as people jump in and out of the lobby or skip maps.Levelling up is always fun and you can get your hands on most of the good stuff fairly quickly. This gives it great accesibility for the casual gamer as opposed to BC2 where it takes a fair bit longer. So this is essentially the best, most fun FPS because.Controls are 'smooth' and responsive.Intense action.Accessibilty (can play equally well alone or with team co-operation)Plenty of class setups (compared to BC2)Better Spawn system (Compared to BC2)Call of Duty is for everyone whereas I'd say BC2 is better for people who like team co-op and some tricky gritty realism.

This game is great i know you don't need me to put you into more depth about its graphics gameplay, cooperative and most of all, the multiplayer. The game is very fun to play, with many different new challenging aspects about the game like fighting in the brazillian favelas where enemies are attacking almost literally from all sides. The game has a good storyline like on COD4 and is set 5 years afterwards. for those of you who played cod4 will realise that soap mactavish (the character you played n cod4) is now captain and you are a new character with the nickname "roach" sanderson. The game has a better campain to cod4 because in the story, it is not a parallel story like in cod4 which was brilliant, but a multiparallel story where you cna play as soap, roach, cia agent (formerly us army rangers) and another person from the us rangers. This makes it better than before because although parallel is good, having characters that die off in parts and are seeing things through different viewpoints makes the story much better. The game also has special ops mode, which for those of you who don't know is a mode for 1 or 2 players. It involves playing parts of missions (including the all ghillied up from cod4 (with a twist)) that have a certain objective. As of yet i haven't unlocked them all, but my favourite is the wreckage where you have to blow up all the vehicles on a bridge while fighting through enemy troopers dropped in via helicopter. There is also the snow missions which are brilliant and add new styles of gameplay as well as the snowmobiles (race is a special ops) which i found very enjoyalbe, new and exciting. In multiplayer you have classes like before. However, you have ranks and custom classes in offline mode (no live ever required) which i found very good considering i don't have live yet.Multiplayer has a lot of different maps from the missions and they have others which are not. One problem is that many maps are quite large, meaning split screen is somewhat limited to certain maps.Killstreaks have been given an upgrade on cod6 where you have 3 customisable killstreaks out of a lot of different possiblities. The best ones are AC130 gunner (like the mission off cod4) and tactical nuke (25 kill streak). nuke wipes the map clean (giving you many kills) but it also ends the game. All in all i think cod6 was a fine addidtion to infinity wards collection and i thought that it was excellent on the whole.About the whole 18 issue, the bbfc said themselves in their report that mw2 was generally acceptable as a 15 due to strong violence, however one mission went beyond boundaries where you can shoot innocent people. In fact, screaming is background, and the mission is not that bad in my view (and i am under 18 btw). I feel that they could release a 15 version of the game without the mission so that parents would buy it (as many parents think that 18 means it is awful and very horrific when it could be due to a 10 minute seciton out the the entire 6 hour campaign)(p.s. do not buy pc version due to problems such as 18 player max (not 64) and other things)

This comes from someone who played Halo franchise first. - I understand why this is the alternative.Yes, there is good reason as to why the Call of duty series is a competitor to Halo, many reasons in fact. Its just the 'fan boy' camaraderie that wee's a little bit on the image of both titles. Both eager to detest the other.COD:MW2 is realistic. At least, compared to other 1st person shooters, featuring a wide array of actual weapons used today in warfare and no doubt sound like the real deal (probably). The campaign is not your average story due to its switching of characters, various landscapes and areas, something overlooked by most games today glamorising an invincible warrior capable of taking not just several bullets and explosions to the face but being lucky enough to avoid the eventual truth that people kill and get killed. Make the connections where you like, my point is that this game genuinely is far more realistic than some of the games on the market. Do we play games for realism? not necessarily, some try to escape it but others rely on it. Sure you'd have to be wearing a butt load of Kevlar and be one lucky s.o.b to take several rounds from an AK47 and live, sure not all troops get the insane amount of air support shown nor the weapons and funding, but its those kitsch additions that can make this game special, enjoyable to say the least. That and the plot is basically USA vs. USSR.Sounds pretty awful when you hear that you have to be Americans and fight the Russians. Lucky for us all, that's hardly the case considering the U.S is pretty much getting rinsed throughout the game. That and there is a nice touch (if rare) of hearing the odd accent of the British. We get enough of the bold & brash American commando linguistics in films, thank you very much.Special Ops is a very welcome game mode, replaying some of the games high points with the option to play with friends. There is some real fun to be had sniping countless enemies with the cover of a snowy forest, atop a well equipped tower or wherever the hell you like really. Snow mobile races are usually a laugh too, hurtling down a mountain weaving in and out of forested wilderness. However, if you'd rather just burn through countless clips of ammo, fighting your way through hordes of soldiers then no fear, this game caters. The downsides are of course, online multiplayer with numerous screaming/swearing children from the U.S - mute them - then its as addictive as halo3. Another is the campaign is too short with roughly 10-15 hours of a first time play through on regular difficulty. If you're going to be a bit harsh, you could say the fighting is bias considering the enemies can cover efficiently, merely raise a gun to fire without exposing themselves to gunfire, whereas you must hope you didn't overdo it on the ol' analogue stick. A minimal negative but still questionable. So, top notch action - checkquality multiplayer modes - checkover the top weaponry and slow mo - double checkperfection? - "close, but no cigar" (Don Corneo, perverted fat man, wall market)

Without a doubt, Modern Warfare 2 is one of the best military shooters I have played. It's a very fast-past and intense experience; sometimes the firefights are so action packed, and so much is happening on screen that it becomes overwhelming at times, and probably portrays what it's like to be in a war zone very well.Modern Warfare 2, despite being a war game, is not really a tactics-based game (such as, say, Rainbow Six Vegas), all that's really required is that you shoot down the enemy before they shoot you, then take cover to reload, and repeat; there are a couple of stealth-based missions, but mostly they are as I mentioned above. Thankfully though the gameplay is superb, and you'll collect a large arsenal of weaponry, ranging from crude to state-of-the-art, as you proceed through the game. You'll also see the return of a couple of familiar faces from Call of Duty 4, although I won't spoil anything for you.The game is complete with voice acting from familiar sources. Keith David (Julius in Saint's Row, Arbiter in Halo 2, Commander Anderson in Mass Effect) lends his voice to one of the main sergeant's in your squad, while Lance Henrickson (Bishop in Aliens, Detctive Hal Vukovich in The Terminator, and the main villain in John Woo's Hard Target) plays General Shepherd, a character which plays a significant role in the game. It's nice to see Lance Henrickson making a comeback here, as he has not been in anything for a long time, and to my knowledge this is the first video game he has appeared in.The game is not perfect though. For a start, the sigle-player campaign length is laughable; a mere six hours or so, even when playing the game on the harder settings. Regardless of what others say, the length is unnacceptable, and no amount of multi-player features makes up for that. Also, it is a rather dumbed-down game with a shallow, easy to follow, and unintelligent story. This is a shame, as if the game was longer (Say about 10 - 12 hours or so), with more emphasis on story and the backgrounds of the main characters, I would not hesistate to give this a five-star rating. Finally, there the notorious "airport scene" in the game, which you can choose to skip if you wish. It generated a lot of controversy because the whole level "supposedly" focuses on killing dozens of innocent civilians. Well I wish people would get their facts straight, because this is simply untrue. Yes the scene is disturbing, yes your comrades shoot civilians but YOU ARE NEVER FORCED TO SHOOT THEM YOURSELF, and can finish the level without killing anyone. Also you are not the heroes committing this act; the level concentrates on showing you (from a first person perspective) what's going on in the minds of the bad guys, how evil they are, and what lengths they are prepared to take to complete their mission. This game does not glamourize war and terrorism, it shows the gritty reality of it.This is a very intense and enjoyable first person shooter, with a few flaws. If you liked Call of Duty 4, this will definately float your boat.

I've been playing games for over 20 years, the concept of multiplayer is relatively new and to be honest I don't understand why people enjoy whiny kids singing and shouting over Xbox live whilst 'teabagging' and 'Powning'. Considering this game is for 18 and overs, well over 50% of the people that play MW2 multiplayer seem to be children between 12 and 16, not only that they seem to have a vast tolerance for mind numbing tedium, which is what playing this game to 10th prestige becomes. The good points: special ops is a nice touch, the campaign is very good and multiplayer is pretty fluid with little to no lag.The bad points, which are what you probably should know about, Special ops is 2 players only, not as much fun as 4 players could be. The campaign is far too short but even that is not as bad as Veteran mode being ridiculously easy, I got 1000 gamerscore on COD4 and WAW and they challenged me, this did not. Finally the multiplayer: besides the annoying children there are a few problems, claymores are totally crap, they don't seem to explode when people walk into them, grenades take an age to throw, you'll be dead before you get to realease it, the killstreaks take forever to activate also, I can't remember the number of times people pop around the corner when I'm activating one. The game itself is just annoying though, a lot of people seem to camp in corners, so if you actually want to have fun and go toe to toe with people, expect to be killed five times by campers before you get your shot, alternatively you could camp too and spend the majority of each match under a desk or hiding in a plant pot.The biggest problem with multiplayer is the killstreaks, it's been said before but here it is again; there are several killstreak rewards that bring in air support: predator missiles, pave low helicopters, air strikes, and more, in an average match you have to deal with these several times; if you walk outside at any time youre dead, so it becomes an interminable wait until someone blows it up or it flies off, not fun. It is also mostly people that camp that get killstreaks, which makes it even more frustrating. If you work it out it takes about 30 hours to prestige one time (if you're good), the average camper probably spends 25 hours of that time staring at a hole in the wall, down an empty corridor or just lying on the roof of a building. This is the mentality of the people you have to deal with.I'm already getting bored with multiplayer and I haven't even got to level 70 yet, I know for a fact that I'm not going to get 10th prestige, I probably won't even get to 2nd, I'm prepared to forget about playing any games online anymore, the market is saturated with idiotic kids that really wear my patience thin.Having said that, this game is definitely worth owning, it's still one of the best multiplayer games and it's not fair to judge the people that make this game by the quality of the people that play it.

The fastest selling game ever to date, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" is a fantastic sequel to one of the most popular games of the current generation. It goes without saying that anyone who enjoyed the first in this offshoot of the "Call of Duty" series will adore what's on offer here. The gameplay is identical to the original, with the age old adage of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" very appropriate here. The main thing people wanted to know was if Infinity Ward could top "Modern Warfare" and in short the answer is a simple: No. This game does pretty much everything you would expect from it, with the added Spec Ops mode adding more replayability to scenes from the campaign, but overall the game fails to have the impact of the story of the original and the single-player seems very short. It is understandable that CoD4's popularity came mainly from the multiplayer, which explains the focus on it here, but another few levels would have been nice. It's easy to criticise "Modern Warfare 2" for being too short because what is there is so blindingly fantastic. Every mission has its charms, with notable mentions being the sections in the frozen arctic and the Brazilian section particularly enjoyable, if quite difficult. The graphics are a slight step up from the first game, with more character detail obvious from the beginning. The level layouts are mostly completely linear, with very few alternate routes, but all is built to tell the story, which, if not as great as before, is still a draw. The game controls beautifully and the multiplayer mode has proven bulletproof for me over standard broadband. I've had no trouble with it at all. Again, the strange idea of players getting perks for playing more means that there will always be players with advantages before the round even begins is still there. It rewards constant play, but handicaps the newcomers, which is a little unfair. It's not as balanced as the likes of the Halo multiplayer and the ranking system doesn't influence what round you'll be put into, which is a shame, as the technology is there and it would make sense to have veterans playing against one another, rather than have two or three fully leveled up players in a mix of lower ranked beginners. This is countered by teh relatively fast progression through the levels, but is slightly daunting at first. The best thing about "Modern Warfare 2" is definitely the immersion factor. You really do feel as if you are in the scene, doing your part. It's great to be part of a bigger picture, just one more guy on the battlefield, rather than an all-conquering super soldier capable of taking on an entire world by yourself.I will close this review by simply saying that you would be mad not to buy "Modern Warfare 2." It is definitely one of the very best games of the year and offers a truly amazing experience, brief in single player and plentiful in replaying and multiplayer. Top stuff.

I bought this game as my first PROPER Call of Duty as I'd played World at War (A great game it must be said), but was looking to take it all a bit more seriously. More recently during endless Summer Holidays, came back for a replay and absolutely LOVED IT!To start my review, the Campaign. I never took this seriously the first time as I was worried having not played CoD 4, that my understanding would be hindered - upon reflection, true to an extent. A small amount of background knowledge would be useful maybe, but not entirely necessary. The will to understand the Modern Warfare storyline however, brought me neatly back to this game and a replay of the Campaign was in order! This revisit was Superb!Although the Campaign is rather too linear in my opinion, with a new mindset and more regard for the characters and plot, the story really did catch on and I was in tune with the game. Hans Zimmer (my personal favourite in soundtrack composing) has done us VERY proud in this campaign as well - the music is absolutely astonishing and fitting in every scene!! It really does make a huge difference to the gameplay, and calls those game-changing moments to be evermore dramatic and emotional.Overall, an outstanding storyline and soundtrack, although a rather linear playing experience. - Definitely a highlight though.Next, the Special Ops, a neat addition and provider of many hours attempting those many missions alone, and miserably failing! This is definitely a 2 player mode and once I hooked up with a buddy, my word - It was Awesome! Many hours spent attempting those many missions till many an early hour trying to achieve that extra star, a great experience and memory! Finally the Multiplayer, as addicting as CoD 4 or 5? Well, no, in a nutshell, unless of course you're 12 years old and have nothing else to do every evening and weekend... A very critical remark and one towards the players and NOT the game but if you're a first time player.. well.. GOOD LUCK! Super fast paced, and actually quite a lot of fun once you get the hang of it however. Additions to Multiplayer are great though, and worthy of good credit.Overall, 4 stars - Great game, Campaign is outstanding and features a very nice storyline, music is AWESOME! Spec Ops is neat, but will require 2 players, multiplayer is fairly good, but not great. If you're new to a Call of Duty online experience, this is not even like being thrown in at the deep end, more like lava!Watch out then, but I urge you to try the campaign, I find that MW3 makes loads more sense with this under your belt so focus on the storyline, and you should really enjoy yourself. Overall, very satisfied with my purchase and would thoroughly recommend!
