*This is a long review as it also includes a review of the 4 DLC packs that have been released on top of the game itself, please feel free just to read the standard game review if that's what your interested in, thank you*Read Dead Redemption (RDR) is a 3rd person open world game set in 1911 and america's wild west. Developed and published by Rockstar, it was coming from a good home , of course Rockstars other open world title is the incredibly successful Grand Theft Auto series.Released In May 2010 It follows the story of outlaw John Marston who his out for revenge against his ex gang members, but in addition he must save his wife and daughter who have been taken hostage by the government to ensure John takes out his gang.Set in West elizabeth, Nuevo Paraiso and New austin, the area is along the border between america and mexico and being set against the increase of industry the growth of the railroad and technology is a clear theme throughout. The environment for this game is huge, with many settlements, animals and other gangs wandering the baron lands. And unlike GTA there are no cars to steal, so grabbing a good horse should be one of your first aims in order to fully travel the range of areas.Throughout the game you will find the mix of scenery that sorrounded the wild west of america. Deserts are broken up by ranches and saloons, wereas other areas have forests and snow topped mountains. The contrast is clearest in a town called Blackwater were there are cars and paved roads, which really feels strange compared to the rest of the land. But it's not just people who inhabit these lands, a wealth of beasts can be found ranging from coyotes and pumas, to grizzly bears and the classic bison.Alongside the storyline there is always something going on in the towns and these can erupt into full blown stories of their own. The wild west is .. well...wild, so expect to see an array of hangings, attacks on groups of riders, calls for help and the occasional Ride by shootings.Mini-games are also a fun way of breaking up any monotany you may be feeling, dueling, gambling and hunting animals all make up a staple diet of the american outlaw to pass a few hours. One of the interesting elements of RDR is its honour system which works similar to Fallout 3's Karma. As you commit actions you will gain either positive or negative honour, positive honour may come by saving a civillian from an ambush wereas negative honour can be down to robbing or killing innocent people. This affects the way your treated when you enter an area, do good things and news will spread and you will be happily greeted by inhabitants, but bad news spreads just as fast and negative honour can lead to a lot of threats from the local sherrif.Personally my favorite way of gaining some negative honour is the outlaw classic, head over to the bar and lasso a women that takes your fancy before chucking her over your horse, riding to the railway lines and dropping her down the track from a speeding train. This fun act can be increased by wearing a moustache and playing with the ends or getting on of your mates to play on the piano.Combat in this game is all about the guns and Rockstar have worked really hard to recreate the guns of the time and what damage they can cause. A host of shotguns, revolvers and pistols are useful for close encounters, but you also have cannons and gatling guns, as well as a few outlaw basics like a lasso, knife and explosives. The arsenal at your disposal brings a real personal feel and it means you can play it out the way you want to, I loved nothing more than fighting with my revolver as it felt just like the old movies and adds a greater sense of fun. Of course the individualism is what helps make this sort of game and the way all the different guns work and the amount of firepower makes it really exciting. The cover system works well and players will find it similar to Naughty Dogs Uncharted series, with the ability to stick to cover and blindfire, but for those feeling a little more John Wayne you can target specific body parts. But if your more of a passive outlaw and prefer the Robin Hood approach then lassoing and hogtieing your enemies may be more up your street. The main feature of the gun-play though is Dead-eye. Dead-eye initiates a bullet-time sequence slowing down time ala The matrix, where John can take a few extra seconds to line up his shot and take out multiple enemies at once. This is staggered into 3 levels which improve over time, level 1 only slows down time wereas level 3 allows you to accuratley pick your shot and perform safe takedowns e.g. shooting the arm holding the gun. Whilst this is very fun, it does take away some of the games realism and feels a little cheap. Of course you don't have to use it and it is there for those who want it, but personally I'm not a big fan.Rockstar have really put some effort into working on GTA's physics and AI system before they brought it into RDR. The bullets create an individual movement when they hit the opponent causing them to move their body more realitically and giving the game some more realism. With more work going into less scripted physics, RDR is using the Euphoria engine which was also used in Star wars force unleashed and Backbreaker football and is one of the most advanced engines in this field, so no expense is being spared to give the gamer a good experience.RDR has also adopted GTA's wanted system, so if a crime is commited then the witnesses may run to alert the local peace-keeping force. However, in RDR you have a new option of bribing the witnesses to keep quiet or you can just shoot them, whatever takes your fancy. This causes a bounty count which increases with the more crimes you commit, in order to escape you have to make it out of a certain radius depending on the alert and can lead to some pretty fun horse chase sequences.Another adaption here is that unlike GTA the police don't forget and so while your lying low they are sending out bounty hunters with a lot of money on your head. And the bounty hunters aren't as kind as police, they will kill and ask questions later so if you decide it's time to turn yourself in then make your way to the local police station. If you can pay your bounty or get a pardon then it's off you go scot free, but if you can't then it will have to be working as a bounty hunter until you have paid back the charge.RDR also has a multiplayer mode with upto 16 players. There are free for all and team games and all start with a mexican standoff situation which helps set the tone for the intense but fun gameplay. The multiplayer modes are made up of deathmatch which is a simple run and shoot your opponents until a set number of kills is met, capture the flag has you racing to steal the opponents flag or gold whilst trying to protect your own.On top of all this there is a truly brilliant free-roam mode, this allows for groups of upto 8 to become a gang and go round the map attacking hideouts, hunting or fighting other players on the server.Graphically the game betters the gritty and urban style of GTA, the contrast between the weathered wood of the saloon and the burning haze of the desert is spectacular. Similarly the way the plains blow in the wind and a lone crow circles above you is really a sight to behold in the gaming world. One small criticism and this is really picking at straws but sometimes the mouth is a little off with the audio, now whilst it doesn't resemble a badly dubbed kung-fu film, sometimes it is noticable. The sounds of the world are really atmospheric and it's easy to pick up conversations between bar patrons or the callings of one of the seedier women down the alley, but when your out in the wild the sounds of the animals are wonderful. Birds call, bears growl and the horses happily run through the plains. The in-game music is nothing to write home about, personally I turned it off because im never a fan of the soundtrack in a open-world game but as I listened to it it was pleasent enough.RDR's basic story reaches 20+ hours and that's without side missions and generally taking the game in, then your looking at nearly double. With this in thought it is easily one of the top games of the year, with DLC having been released as well it makes the investment well worth it.================================================= ==Since its release RDR has brought out 4 DLC packs, Rockstar are known for their quality in extending the life of games as was shown with Liberty city stories for GTA.Outlaws to the end, Legends and killers, Liars and cheaters and Undead nightmare make up the host of DLC on offer once you have played through the RDR story.Outlaws to the end was the first DLC package and bought 6 co-op side missions, it also gives some new challenges and trophies. An added bonus is that it is free. This is mainly because it didn't truly add anything "new" to the game, the side missions are set in existing areas and so just gave a new way to explore that space. The missions are fun and challenging, included in the six missions are protecting a herd of cattle from rustlers, performing a gold robbery on a mining settlement and even being involved in a "against all odds" battle at a fort, complete with cannons and a large mexican army. This was my favorite mission of this DLC and was incredibly challenging, taking a good few goes to finally win.One of the main elements of Outlaws missions was that it added an element of charachter classes, which is becoming a massive part of any online multiplayer game. For example you have a miner who is good with explosives or you have a gunslinger who is an ace with the revolver and rifle. These make it more of a team game when doing missions as you have to take into account the other players strengths and weaknesses.Being free there's no reason not to pick it up and give a few more hours to the game. The 2nd DLC pack was Legends and Killers, this was a stouter release bringing 9 new multiplayer locations, 8 characters from Rockstars previous title Red Dead Revolver, a tomahawk axe and a shiny new set of trophies. It's also the first DLC pack to charge, but is it worth it ?Well the 9 new maps are a mix of places both wide open spaces and small towns, full of cover for some real cowboy shootout action. But they are all places that are already in the single player mode with a few minor tweaks, so the main issue is that the atmosphere of the area, with all the hubub of the AI civillians, is lost when your shooting against another player. Overall the maps are a mix bag and there are as many that are good as those that are bad, whilst some lead to great shootouts, others lead to chokepoints where your team only need to stay in one place and you have full reign of the map.The new tomahawk isn't as exctining as I thought it would be and only adds a small amount more range than the throwing knife, whislt it's a nice addition it isn't game changing.Similarly with the revived characters , they add nothing spectacular to the game and instead feel like a buffer for the multiplayer maps to try and make it seem as though fans are getting their moneys worth. It's a shame that the first paid DLC has gone this way but I would have to say give this one a miss.So after the somewhat lackluster first release, could Liars and Cheaters pull back some credibility for Rockstars usual untouchable DLC.included in the pack this time is attack and defend modes in multiplayer, horse racing and mounted combat, the ability to play as some of the heroes and villians of RDR as well as 8 new characters, the ability to play liars dice and poker online, a new weapon in the exploive rifle, and of course some new trophies. Also added in is the ability to "free-roam" once you have completed the game and a scoring board for gangs online. At first glance it seems like a lot of bang for your buck, but 15 characters added to the multiplayer isn't great as none of them have real individuality. The new multiplayer modes are a breath of fresh air for the game, the attack and defend modes are fun and can lead to some brilliant moments as you try to take or defend the base. In addition the horse racing and saloon games allow you and freinds to put your feet up and have a rest from all the shooting, which although may seem boring sometimes that getaway is what you need so when you come back you can really tell what your missing. But a hidden gem among the DLC is that their is 4 hunting grounds which are packed with cougars, wolves and boars. As well as some new hideouts to attack, these are really difficult and require both luck and skill to complete. The bonus of a "free-roam" mode is what any RDR player wanted, the ability to go back and just do as you please in the game means you can try all kinds of stunts and do what you want without working towards something. The way this map has gone is almost like a break, it gives the players a chance to get away and relax with the game and expands on some of the fun aspects rather than the action filled one. This pack is defintaly worth buying and adds a lot of what the fans were asking for.And finally we have RDR's latest release, the Undead nightmare pack brings a taste of horror and B-movie zombie style to the world of RDR.this is beleived to be the cream of the DLC crop, but we will find out. This DLC turns the game on its head, bringing with it zombified everything, a new campaign, spooky environment to adventure in and a suitably thrilling soundtrack.Starting off with one hell of a storm brewing outside , things soon turn even worse as the dead begin to rise and slowly start converting others into undead zombies, luckily John Martson is around to save the world. Now having played and seen enough zombie stuff in my time I instantly knew that these things needed their head blown a mile away and that zombies can't climb ladders. To kill the undead feel free to pick up all new weapons like holy water or the blunderbuss, failing that pick up some of their limbs and use them as ammo. You can also use the undead as bait to lead others into massive traps which will see the brain eating buggers flying into the air.But this game doesn't just have the slow zombies, there also ones that are a bit tubby, crawling ones which will sneak up behind you when you think your safe on the roof and one that chucks out a poisonos gas. Sometimes the resemblance to Left 4 dead was a little laughable but the change in zombies lightens up the game and keeps it fresh.Rockstar have put in a pretty cool system for the zombie virus in that it spreads in real time, new zombies don't just spawn, they come by infecting others. This puts you in a bit of a dilemma because you can either try an save others which lowers the amount of zombies but puts you in more danger, or you'll just have to stick a bullet in everyones head. one is more fun than the other I can assure you.The new missions are a nice slant on the regular style of RDR, instead of gang hideouts you clear out the local cemetary or search for missing people. This helps add to the enormity of the situation and the need to survive is clear when your being chased by a mob of zombies out into the darkness. One thing that I found cool was how Rockstar have tried to zombify everything, your horse can be zombified by shooting it in the head and soon it will rise and you can call it back to you. This new horse wont get tired to easily and can take a bit of damage, however it's a zombie so it isn't as nimble as it used to be.Speaking of hours, whilst your making it to the next area you may even find yourself beset upon by one the 4 horses of the apocalypse which roam the sorroundings. War, Pestilince, Famine and Death are all there with their mythical powers and if your skilled enough you may even be able to break one in and have it as your noble steed. Bonuses of this is that they have unlimited amounts of energy, pestilince is pretty much invincible and war breaths fire. In addition there are many other mythical creatures like bigfoot to be found. In addition to all this there is a 6 hour side story which has some great gameplay moments, and the 2 new multiplayer modes like zombie overun sees you and your freinds trying to survive wave after wave of zombie attacks.your almost getting a new game and it is one hell of a bargain for DLC, highly reccomend this one if nothing else.

Basics:Play this game from start to finish; completing all the main story missions and all the side quests following, any gamer who puts over 40 hours worth of Gameplay into this title, will find themselves becoming immersed greatly into the game, finding it hard to take breaks over shorter periods of time. After extensive playtime users are likely to find a similar scenario to Final Fantasy X in which gamers find themselves believing the characters more than they may have first imagined. It is important to understand although this game is very dissimilar from titles such as final fantasy the believability in which the characters develop through the storyline will make play through ever more addictive.Playing the game for the first time I wasn't expecting the best of the best, I found myself wondering why I first purchased such a title, but patience within this game is essential, reviews on such a game must only be written if the gamer/reviewer who made the purchase has completed virtually every percentage of this title and put at least 50 hours+. Most of which on this current page I feel is hard to believe; by the written depth and integrity of the reviews.GameplayA gamer who buys a game, wants to get the most out of a title; whether it is for a storyline, Gameplay, multiplayer experience, or because a friend may have recommended the purchase, however let me assure customers who have not already made the purchase of buying this title; it is simply not to be missed and I personally would fully recommend it; as briefly discussed above the title features incredible character depth complete with memorable cut scenes and breath taking background realism, character animation has been developed to a level equivalent to the popular Grand Theft Auto franchise and beyond. The character Niko comes from within John Marston and his actions during Gameplay greatly resemble this such as jumping over fences or the side rolling from using the exact same buttons and GTA 4. Rockstar have pulled out all the stops on the in game cut scenes using in-depth lip and eye synchronisation with believable character audio. Users will be enchanted for such a release that covered very little publicity on release date. Gameplay is revolutionary combining the common 3rd person controls with an adaptive development during the pause menu: a player has the option to select different guns through different types...EG rifles are within one category and handguns are within another. The Gameplay is ridiculously smooth, making it very addictive; users can fire a rifle on a horse back and shoot a bird out the sky and watch it fall to the ground with no FPS drop or load time, the shadows and the depth of the realism are mind blowing; tested on the latest 50 inch 1080P with enhanced 3D technology. Terrain has been mapped so accurately with very minimal flaws, modelling of building is exceptional! The level of the detail between each brick is astonishing; gamers will be fully immersed in a believable world of the Wild West. The customisation further makes the game more interesting; allowing a shop merchant to sow patches of gang related material allows your character to undergo special fulfilments, and immunities to the law however it may proceed. The shops are realistically marked in each and individual town showing different icons on the radar (bottom left of screen) so you can quickly choose how you wish to proceed whenever it comes to spending your money. Furthermore spending money in this game has never proved so rewarding; you will be able to hunt wildlife and skin animals, collect feathers and sell to different shop keepers around the world. Different prices are rewarded for different loot making hunting ever more necessary; hawk feathers fetch a high price where as horse hides only consume a small collection of dollars. Accumulative wealth is essential in the game to becoming either a notorious or famous in the later stages of the game. After spending a few minutes collecting raw materials a user can sell these extensive resources to customise John Marston as he/she sees fit either through offensive properties or gather more defensive/healing materials. After completing various missions throughout the main story line, depending on our users respond to outcomes that are not pre-determined; honour and fame decrease or increase where appropriate; these ramifications have many effects on the bounties that you may have to kill if you wish to collect more money or how people within a district may interact with you. There seems to be more creative Gameplay actions for gamers within this title; the `Red Dead' refers to a special ability John Marston has as a character with allows the quick draw of a firearm and aiming to a target. Further development into the storyline unlocks the critical upgrade of Red Dead level 3 in which users can slow down time and select as many targets as they wish, after the gauge runs out or the user cancels the action by firing the weapon; this releases a violent array of gunshots on the selected target in which shots can kill instantly or effect how the selected targeted walks or moves throughout their life. Targets that are shot twice in both legs no longer have the ability to walk, as users who are shot in their right hand can no longer wield a gun, whilst bullets to the head have the one shot kill effect. After watching films such as a `Few Dollars More' or a `Fistful of Dollars' there are obvious resemblances related to character visualisation or Gameplay tactics. Users can choose a horse they wish to ride which will have different statistics to the default one given at the start of the game; making a name for yourself as an outlaw has never been so rewarding and addictive to the common 3rd person franchise.GraphicsFew would argue since the PS3 release of next generation games: some of the titles have not liven up to their names with relevance related to the detail in worlds or where the frames per second are concerned, let me remind users who are considering purchasing this title that the frames per second most likely exceeds over 80 and the graphics are truly one of a kind with break taking long distance perspective and an unbelievable weather mechanism that operates in a real time efficiency very similar to the mobile phone equivalency of GTA4's mobile phone feature; where a hour is 60 seconds of real time. Gamer's will truly be pleasantly surprised at how the sunsets and rises in partnership to the in game clock, further more shops have opening times which prove to be realistically and never linear, shop keepers may go off for a walk and leave their shop unallocated to the customer making timing ever more essential when wishing to purchase goods. As the reputation of the character John Marston becomes increasingly well known over the world people will talk to you; some pleasantly others not to pleasantly simply pressing one button on the control, your character will commit an action that says something that fits the character who spoke to you originally whether it be a response to a woman or a man, or an elderly woman or elderly gentlemen the depth to the character interaction is astonishing but honestly never forgettable. Playing games for long periods seems to have been harder than ever after titles like Halo 3 or Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, but this game has outlived both in my opinion offering a third person world perspective to your average sandbox game complete with a bunch of goodies that will surprise anybody who purchases this.StoryIncreasingly more people are buying games for their storyline more than there creative Gameplay features, whilst the blurb on the reverse side of the CD seems vague at best, further gameplay into this title will reveal there is much more to this title, featuring lots more side quests similar to Grand Theft Auto 4 in regards to the `random person's' missions. These allow users to understand how John Marston acts and furthermore develop his character into a more memorable state showing his weaknesses for the things he wants and the disregards for the people he wants to kill. After playing this title for between 20 - 30 hours users will be reaching the main storyline missions in which John Marston seeks revenge from his outlaw friends, but amazingly the game does not simply end there further missions prolong and endeavour to keep users playing even more hours into this title; I myself have put over 200 hours into the main storyline and am fully comprehensive with every factor and outcome whether good or bad involved.OverallIf you're wishing to purchase a game that you won't want to stop playing; a game that will draw you into its creative and believable storyline ideas whilst allowing you to experience some revolutionary controls, unique character customisation, incredible in-depth and beautiful surroundings, realistic physics, the utmost then rest assured I myself and over a million customers would highly recommend this game. I have three platforms for playing games on; Playstation 3, Xbox 360 (Elite) and a high powered Desktop PC home to over 300 games which I have accumulated since my gaming time back in 1990, the point being my word within this review is honest and accurate a true tribute to being able to play such a game I will truly never forget. Ultimately if you like 3rd person games, in-depth storylines, character customisation, different weapons, special abilities and side quests that this is truly the right game for you; and a purchase will never be regretted only remembered years later:Some people are not too keen on reading extensive reviews on the internet: therefore I have used my own professional opinion and have credited others where necessary (Ohara Shin Shinsaku - Capcom)Graphics 10/10 - Extensive resources and high polygon modelling show this title has an extensive landscape but adapts the surface textures by creating accurate models which don't need textures to create a third dimensionSound 10/10 - character voices are believable and sound effects of both weapons and horses are synchronised with incredible accuracy; actions on one side of the screen will have effect on the left speaker/left headphone speaker and vise versaControls 9.5/10 - A different scheme has been used within this game using both the `Start' and `Select' buttons similar to Capcom's Resident Evil to pull up the inventory and the map dialogue windows. Further testing could have proved a way to bring this data in during gameplay.Creativity: 9.5/10 - Although the ideas behind Red Dead Redemption still remains unique, changes could be made through the characters particular abilities related to gameplayPlayability: 25 hours plus - to most 3rd person gamers: playing this game through both the storyline and side quests will accumulative more hours than this alone. There is a world out there, it may be digital but its believability is hard to question and its price for purchasing has fallen its time for you to experience `Red Dead Redemption'

Many professional critics have written professional reviews for their professional company and have claimed this game to be the very best of it's kind. The very best western. In truth, this isn't exactly a difficult accomplishment to achieve as previous video games with the western style going have either been Incredibly bad or were just commercial flops. People just don't seem to want western style games. I mean, Red Dead Redemption itself is the successor to one of the most forgettable games of the last console generation. Red Dead Revolver. Then there's Gun which was enjoyable but not great, But it was a step forward for westerns... Then Call Of Juarez came and we went back again.Well this time Rockstar could really turn this around. For me, the question is not "Is this the best western?" but rather, can a western game actually be a good game? Because that is what really matters.Anyway the review yes, about the game. The game starts, as always with Rockstar, with a very movie-like cinematic beginning showing your cowboy hero, John Marston going through these brilliantly directed cut-scenes featuring casual talking in the background but with the attention cleverly still focused on John. It's great. After you get through the cut-scenes which eventually seem to go on forever, you finally get to play. The first missions are all tutorial, which would be annoying but some how they kept them fun and there's a few of them. What you might think as daunting tasks turn out to be fun little trials. Not only that, but to make them even better they are cleverly implemented into the story and character progression. Then after the tutorial missions and you've learned the basics, the next missions just get better and better as the story progresses even further. They will have you meet new characters which all have their own unique aspects and will not be forgettable. One up for the westerns! The characters are well thought out, each and every one of them. If they're meant to be likeable, you will like them, if they're they're not meant to be likeable well whatd' ya' know you wont like them. The Voice acting is at its best the personalities are believable and the protagonist isn't actually boring unlike our Eastern European friend Niko. Well done Rockstar. In fact he is probably the most interesting character which is how it should be unless it isn't intended. Not only are the main characters great but you'll meet some unforgettable random characters while you're on a nice stroll through town. Another one up for westerns!Outside of missions you'll find a lot of random things happening around you. Some may involve you falling into a trap, be careful on those, some may not have anything to do with you but may still leave you in shock regardless! And when you're not helping someone's friend from being hung, the world is yours for the taking with so many things to do, it can all be quite overwhelming, in a good way. See a deer? Put hole in its head using a weapon out of the large array of other weapons to choose from, then how about cutting it up for some nice skin and then selling it at the local General Store for pittance. then use the pittance to purchase ammo for tomorrows hunt! That's right you can go hunting, they're are literally loads of animals to slaughter for your sick pleasure even your trusted steed can be exchanged for your brand new revolver! Then lets walk down the street and talk to this worried looking lady and start a stranger challenge which in itself has a little story in it. After you've completed it, you'll find your fame and honour has risen which can happen by completing other heroic deeds other than just stranger missions. Or you could take the villainous side by shooting innocent civilians and joining criminal gangs by blending in with one of the many costumes you can unlock. Then lets dress up smartly and hit the town for some high stakes poker, just one of the many minigames to take part in. There are also challenges to complete whilst doing all of this. As you can see, there is much to do and the list carries on. This means that John wont be left bored after the Missions have been completed... Unlike our Eastern European friend Niko. It also proves that you don't need online play for game re-playability. Yet another one up for our Westerns!Speaking of online, this game does indeed have online play. Remember how amazing free roam is offline, well online, free roam is your lobby (rather than a menu) where you can meet up with other players and form a posse (the equivalent of a party). From there on you can proceed into an online game with your new friends and go against other posses in shoot-outs and gold robberies. This is very clever, I liked the idea of it in Grand Theft Auto IV, but our Eastern European friend Niko couldn't enjoy this, and I like how they've improved on it in Red Dead Redemption, although I think it needs a little bit more improvement before it can be a total replacement for online game lobbies. But it's a great idea. Now this may seem like a one up for westerns but this is where the negatives come in, but it's not because of the game being a western. It's the gameplay. Playing some online games can be frustrating, enemies take too many bullets to kill, weapons feel useless unless you find a rare weapon in a box, what's the point in that? You respawn behind enemies and enemies respawn behind you, the aiming system has become worse since GTA IV's which was great as it was, you can't run without showing up on the radar and players seem to blend in with the environment making them hard to see, even at at a short distance. The Online multiplayer is good, the games are fun to play but these problems can make it feel like your doing bad when actually, your winning! This Maks the online, by far the weakest aspect of the game. Too bad...What isn't bad though is the technical stuff. The visuals are stunning The sounds are amazing, and most importantly the game is fun. Walking through a town in Red Dead Redemption feels like walking through a town in Assassins Creed II, it's very atmospheric, very dynamic. The N.P.C.s are all busy doing their own unique thing creating this truly alive world full of activities and random events that will amaze you and that you can interact with if you so choose. Any glitches? This game is very well polished and the only glitch that I have so far found is a very minor one that occurs when you hitch your horse on one particular hitching post. Thats It! It doesn't effect the gameplay at all. We don't just have a Western video game that is good, it's great in fact! But we have a video game in general that is great and can compete with some of the biggest games around like Call Of Duty and that is a strong contender for Game Of The Year award! It's brilliant!!

Red Dead RedemptionPlayStation 3Rated 18Stats:HD 720p1 Player Offline2-16 Network Players OnlineRequires: 600MB Minimum of free Hard Drive spaceDeveloped by Rockstar San DiegoPublished by Take-Two Interactive SoftwareStory:The Federal Agents of Blackwater have kidnapped John Marston's family; in order for him to get them back, he must kill all the Outlaws he'd befriended in the past. Upon his quest, John teams up with: Bonnie Mcfarlane who he must help occasionally to get the ranch up and running again, a U.S. Marshal in Armadillo, who helps John defeat lead adversaries, Nigel Dickens, who creates health tonics and moonshine for the country folk and Seth Briars, a creepy old and scruffy guy located in a cemetery, not far from Armadillo. After all the supposed gang leaders are defeated there remains just one... left; but who is he?Story review:The story to this game is well paced from start to finish, with John reminding you after each major sequence why you are doing, what you're doing; in turn adding new plot twists. Unlike most reviewers on here; I actually liked the dossing around moments i.e. scenes associated with the Mcfarlane's Ranch and Beecher's Hope, where you'll have to do certain chores for the community or family; remember this phrase "Calm before the storm" well that's what these moments represent. Story is very good non the less, so it's awarded 8/10Graphics:Whilst some areas could use a little improvement such as characters and props, the scenery is amazing to look at cos' every part of the country provides unique environmental elements and colour that is different to other areas; providing scope and depth, which is really important for a game that offers little building structure. The characters and Props have little detail and seem to resemble the classic Rockstar look, as seen in GTA IV i.e. exposed white pixels.Gameplay - Getting About:The walking mechanics of your character fails to notice you're using analogue sticks instead of the directional pad, so turning your character in any direction feels rather clunky and robust. There are a variety of transport in this game too, from horses, stagecoach or by train; the latter is useless, cos' after a set amount of time has passed, the trains start to lose their rhythm and would collide with one another or get stuck on a section of track. The trains seem to take too long as well and with glitches involved, you'll find you'll be standing at a station for a very long time; so it's definitely not the right mode of transport to take if you're in a hurry. The most favourite is the campsite option, cos you just lay this down anywhere just to the side of the road and you can select your chosen destination, which will take you straight there.Gameplay - Combat:Combat is relatively easy to master; you can take cover behind objects, free aim or use a specific 'Dead Eye' function to slow down time and take more precision shots. The 'Dead Eye' is on a timer and the player must place crosses to mark hit positions; but once the timer is finished, John/Jack would fire in quick succession at the chosen spots on the body.John/Jack can fire at any animal, be it person or snake, but killing individuals unlawfully would hit John/Jack with a wanted level with Fame and Honour decreasing, Once wanted has been activated, a red circle would appear on the GPS, which the player must navigate away from to remain anonymous. Your wanted level is still attached to your character even when you've disappeared out of the red zone, so to make it vanish you need to pay cash (in-game money) or use a pardon letter, handed to a telegraph office, usually located near train stations, in order for the wanted level to disappear completely. Failure to do so, would entice more bounty hunters to hunt John down, with the red zone increasing in size each time. You'll get an outfit if Fame and Honour has decreased completely, But all this can be averted, if you've bribed or killed a witness beforehand.Performing good deeds for people would increase fame and Honour to a respectable level earning you with a good reputation among other folk, I think there's an outfit for this as well.Gameplay - Extras:Many random people would show up demanding some of you attention, be it good or bad. The good would need your help to apprehend somebody, to locate a missing person or just to give you something out of a good will gesture, whilst the bad, would entice you in a duel battle, rob you of your horse, or take civilians hostage. You can also look for treasure by buying maps from stores and look for set clues i.e. landmarks for the whereabouts of the treasure. You can drink at any Saloon bar and gamble at roulette or poker tables. The gameplay in this is really good and kept me entertained for hours cos' there is always something going on in the town when you'll least expect it.Conclusion:I can't vouch for the multiplayer side of it, as I've not experienced it yet, nor do I intend too. I'm just not into the Multiplayer games. But the single player on this is rather good, great story, with gameplay entertaining you for hours. So this is definitely a must have in your game collection. So who would buy this game; well fans of Grand Theft Auto for sure and other fans who just like open world games. My reason for 3 stars in the fun category is because it can be boring at times, with some missions dragging on longer than some others. My reason for 4 stars overall: Poor graphics on character's and props as well as the Trains being far too glitchy, making the addition of them useless.

This game is amazing, but you really have to play it to fully experience it. Reviews don't come even fractionally close to the full greatness of this game. I will break it down to give you an idea.Graphics= 5/5: I have heard people criticise the graphics compared to xbox 360, and i have both a 360 and PS3, and normally PS3 graphics do not disappoint, and they haven't here! They are simply mind-blowing! When you ride up your first hill and stop above the cliff drop below you (especially in mexico), you can see the water stretched out to the left of you, with crystal clear water simulation, one of the best i have seen even compared to powerful PC's, and the sand and rocks beneath your horses hooves, with birds circling crying out against the relentless beating sun with a few shrubs throwing faint shadows onto the ground as a tumbleweed goes rolling peacefully by, and Marston (your character) wipes some sweat from his brow with his sleeve whilst taking his hat off all shadows accompanying it effortlessly, you will almost feel you are there, and will sigh as you marvel at the sheer beauty of the effort rockstar have gone to, in order to create this fantastic scenery. It really is great. All characters and buildings and anything else you can think of has been animated to perfection.Gameplay= 5/5: Again, simply outstanding. It keeps you on the edge of your seat with differentiating fast paced missions whilst in-between you can lay back playing a game of poker or liars dice, or go out on a hunt, or pick some flowers for challenges and for a profit, a great aspect being you get more money for some items in some places where it is rarer, and less in others. There is so much to do, and you never do missions with one character for too long, something they have fixed since early on GTA's. This game has a map bigger than san andreas, the biggest one on a GTA, and it varies more as you can go to america, mexico and mountainous wooded areas of america, all of these have different villains, terrain, animals, missions, side-missions, and so much more. The side missions are either "stranger missions", where you see a cutscene then have to do a short mission for money and Honour, which is like Karma in fallout 3 and affects how people like the law men react to you, and fame which is well, fame. You get all this from main missions too, but this is quicker and interesting. There are also random stranger tasks, like catching (or killing) villains, freeing sheriffs in gang hideouts, rescuing women from men, recovering stolen horses/wagons, defeating people in duels and so much more.Controls= 5/5: I felt this deserved to be separate from gameplay, they are great (i think you can tell where this review is going now:) Running is simple, move where you want to go with left analogue, press X to run, tap X to sprint, and the same on a horse except you have to control the amount of stamina to avoid being bucked off, but when you have a weapon out you run without pressing and holding X. Also the cover method is much more developed and easy to use than GTA's as you press R1 to move into and stay in cover which will absorb roughly %80 of fire coming your way, but the height of the wall/tree/anything else useable, and the angle and presence of ricochets etc all factor. The great aspect kept from Red Dead Revolver (The first one), is the dead eye system. You can freeze time and target people/animals/anything that can be shot, hats, bottles, etc and then shoot. The bar which controls how long you can freeze time for and it enters a sepia effect on the screen, is controlled by how many people/animals etc you have shot using regular aiming, or chewing tobacco or drinking certain types of booze. Regular aiming is also great as targets close enough to the aiming reticle are automatically targeted at chest height (on people), and it is then easy even for complete technophobes to aim at things and successfully shoot them to earn money against strangers in bets or in any situation when it is needed, (there are a lot of them!) The duelling system is very clever and changed from RDR1 and you can now shoot them dead, by aiming for the head to draw first, or disarming them by shooting their hands.Story= 5/5: Marston, is deep down a cold hearted killer. And that makes him brutal which makes the game good, which is what you want, but just above that he is a family man who wants everything to go well for him and his family and he is actually a good guy. I wont ruin the story but it is good and long. Yesss! I have played it for many hours now 25+ and am only about %60 through including on challenges and the rest. Overall it is spectacular so much can fit on the disk.Weapons= 5/5: This is a hard one because many weapons do exist but they are hard to come by, but rest assured there is a good selection. Semi-autos and revolvers and sniper rifles (early ones) and repeaters and all sorts.Multiplayer= 5/5: This is one of the best aspects of the game even if you don't care for it, it is amazing! Longs story short, watch the trailer, it is just like that!! Make posses, explore with friends, hunt, get in fights, play many different types of game modes, do challenges, level up and earn better characters and mounts and so much more.Overall= 5/5: What did you expect! Noting more needs to be said.

This is the first Western Rockstar game I have played and I guess I was expecting the same amount of detail as Grand Theft Auto, but although I had a great time playing Red Dead Redemption, I never felt totally blown away. The parallels between the two games are very obvious. Here, you play John Marston, a thug with a chequered past and some scores to settle...,you work your way through the Wild West by making alleigences with various corrupt officials, helping out folk and looking for old enemies. As in GTA, the game world is a giant, free-roamable space, with certain areas conveniently blocked off until the point in the game when you are allowed to move to a new region. In RDR this comprises of a large Southern US state, which eventually leads to going over the border to Mexico, and then finally into a northern mountainous region which holds the largest town in the game. The first thing to praise is the look of the game. I was hugely impressed by the landscape that you are free to explore and admire as much as you like. Great sprawling prairies, rocky mesas, cactus strewn deserts and snowy mountain forests, it really does live up to expectation. The weather and night/day lighting effects are also pretty awesome. You will never tire of the scenery around you in this game.Next comes the actual gameplay. Well I have to announce my first disappointment here in that is is not really that challenging. The missions are almost all the same thing: ride somewhere on your horse and shoot down a load of bad guys. That really does make up about 75% of the gameplay here. I really enjoyed the few changes of pace such as facing a large fire in a neighbouring ranch, and a couple of missions spent riding a moving train were good fun (the train looks great, I could have had plenty more of this). The reason for the repetition is partly because of the transport: horses. Now I read that there are different horse breeds in the game with different abilities, but in practice this makes 0.01% difference to playing the game. All you have to do is find a horse and jump on. The difference to the variety of transport to GTA (many different cars, trucks, bikes, boats and helicopters) is very obvious, and I honestly never cared which horse I was ever riding, they were just a means of getting from A to B.The fighting element is pretty well worked out though, there are several different guns of different types, although why there are quite so many of the same class (all those rifles?), I don't know. The game's gimmick of Dead Eye (like Bullet Time) is fun but it was never the make or break part of winning a fight for me. Duels were a different matter, though - I was terrible at them, they really should have made a clearer turorial for doing these, or maybe I just didn't get it.Other disappointments were that the game was a bit glitchy, I often found items and/or people floating in mid air or trapped in an animation loop. Sometimes I lost missions becasue of glaringly unfair glitches - at one point a bunch of about 4 enemies spontaneously materialized almost on top of me and shot me down before I could even aim at them! There are several mini games but the rewards for doing them are not great and they weren't that interesting. Picking up herbs or shooting various types of wildlife is only mildy diverting. Although I did try and do all the "stranger" missions (meeting random people who ask you to do small quests/chores for them), as the characters you meet throughout the game are fantastically realised. Voice acting is spot on, and the appearance and animation of the people in the game is very realistic. There are a lot of weirdos in the world, so it was definitely worth doing all the "stranger" missions to have a laugh and/or see some quite creepy goings-on.In a change from GTA, you can pretty much decide whether to play as good or bad in RDR. In GTA, the Police were ALWAYS your enemy, but here you can choose to be honourable and help the law, or be a low down criminal and make everyone hate you. This is very similar to "Infamous", which also had a "saint or sinner" scale that was affected by your choices in the game.To sum up, this is a breathtaking game to look at, but the missions all seemed slightly mechanical. The random trials of everyday life spiced things up, things like passing a hold-up and deciding to help out, escorting lost people found in the desert to safety, or saving passers-by from attacking wild animals. This all added up to a fuller experience. I also enjoyed playing Texas Hold 'Em and Liars Dice at the various saloons, and breaking in wild horses. So I was never bored, but all in all I never felt like I was eagerly awaiting the next mission to see what new challenges awaited me - they were all pretty much alike. But the sounds and scenery mean the game really oozes authentic atmosphere so I definetley recommend the experience of playing it to everyone.

His family held captive till he captures or kills the members of a posse of outlaws he used to ride with - one thing's for sure John Marsten ain't exactly having a good time. Let's hope you can don his dusty boots and help him out...one way or another. So begins the long - very, very long - road through what has to be one of the most awe inspiring open world adventures I have ever had the honour to be a part of. Now, fair enough, I've broken the cardinal rule of reviewing by blowing my beans too soon as far as my opinion of the game goes, but I'm sure after a few hours playing this you too will be entranced - also many, many, reviews have already waxed on over the merits of the game so I am merely here to back up these claims of grandeur, and hopefully push a few more people one step closer to this stunning recreation of the wild old west.THE GOOD:- Quality, people, quality: this game reeks of it from the second you step into your first dust bowl town to your 30th gun fight with some grizzly looking miscreant.- Graphically this is where it's at. The draw distance and vistas that accompany it are worth the asking price alone. Every effect you could hope for is flying around in some form or another and the texture work is fantastic. All in all it goes to create one of the moST solid and cohesive feeling game worlds ever made.- The music is minimalist and haunting. Whistles and other spaghetti western accompaniments are thrown around with style but are never overbearing.- The other audio work is equally stunning. Townsfolk greet you in their old west drawl, animals call in the distance and your guns hammer the speakers as they hammer another head clean off its shoulders. Very nice stuff.- Controls are tight and innovative. Holding down the run button when on horseback to keep a steady pace with your companions is a stroke of genius that should have been implemented in games long ago. The cover system is tight and aiming is niether too loose nor too stiff meaning you'll be spraying brains all over the dessert in no time at all.- Missions are varied and interesting, plus there are tons of them, this is one immense game. Hunt bounties, follow the story, help townsfolk, hunt wild animals and find outfits by collecting their various parts all over the west - I could go on but I don't want to ruin any suprises. Plus if all that isn't already enough the Rockstar Social Club features new missions with the promise of more to come, now I wouldn't expect this stuff to stay free forever but right now this is the game that keeps on giving, and giving and giving!- Characters are interesting and fill out what so far seems to be a great yarn (12 hours in - I got it early, don't judge me!)- All the little extras really add atmosphere to the proceedings - stuff like being able to buy a newspaper and read stories with your antics in it (amongst the humorous adverts and clues to interesting places and quests), the little movies in the movie theatre, being able to camp in the wilds and being able to prop up the bar at your local saloon all go hand in hand in adding authenticity to an already great experience.- I spent around 3 hours getting from one town to another - not because it's a pain to get thier because you can fast travel, but then you would miss my point and some of the finest things RDR has to offer. I met tons of strangers with requests, went hunting, partook in a hostage situation (that went badly for me) and even bought up some property. This is not a big old map of nothing but rock and cactus, there is tons to do and exploration is just plain fun.- I am officially hooked on the horseshoes mini game and that is just one of many - i'm positive you'll find one (if not more) to whittle away the hours on!THE BAD:- It's massive, if you're looking for a quick blast this isn't it - this is a life drainer - prepare to draw the blinds and abandon those you love. I personally see this as a very good point, bang for your buck an all that, but this review is for everyone and if you where expecting a 10 hour jaunt through americas harsh lands like in the first Red Dead then think again.- People with an extreme aversion to the wild west or cowboys best steer clear.THE UGLY TRUTH:This is the good stuff, boys and girls, I loved the original Red Dead but this kicks its mangy hide outta town, and then some. Fantastic on so many levels it just has to be experienced. I truly can't recommend this enough so saddle on up and nip out to your local games store right now (or buy it right here - - - oops!).

This game lights up the mind, and is a treat for the senses.Sometimes console games surpass certain standards of acceptance and take things a step further. This game does just that. What I mean by that is there seems to be similar features that re-occur throughout video games, predictability ensues; games fall from being magnificent to good. Which is no huge criticism, we all need escapisms and video games are, by and by an effective means of pursuing this. However this is no average game, this doesn't fall into mediocrity and its attention to detail from every aspect make it stand out; it is one of those gems that could inspire people non too keen on console gaming to take a second look. What sets Red Dead Redemption apart is its ability to immerse you in a truly believable world. From the off the voice acting is fantastic, "Rob Wietoff" the guy voice acting John Marston is tremendous. The intonation is perfectly balanced; you can detect sarcasm, anger, sadness, humility all with realism and moderation. Voice acting has a tendency towards either drab and uninspiring or grossly melodramatic. The quality of the voice acting is similar to Uncharted 2. There are times in this game where you'll put the controller down and enjoy five minutes of conversation on a journey between two places (a journey you can skip) it brings a smile to your face; for example the mission which involves travelling to Bonnie McFarlane's ranch with Abbey Marston is supremely entertaining, a sticky love triangle gently ensues . It's highly entertaining to watch. The game has a fantastic story line that has different counter-plots unfolding at the same time, this adds fullness and dimension. Predictability never rears its ugly head and you are genuinely gripped by what the game has to offer. There really is a rewarding feeling completing various tasks the game has to offer; skinning animals, completing challenges, becoming more adept at various jobs, unlocking outfits and helping strangers. Up until recently I preferred the term computer-game over video-game. I now understand why the term may be in use, it feels like an interactive video, one in which you feel you have a tremendous level of control over the direction and the pace of the plot. You become incredibly attached to John Marston.Graphically it's a treat, there are awe-inspiring expanses, mountains, rivers, ravines, the sun sets, the sun rises, it all creates a completely new world; you will often find yourself taking a few seconds out just simply to admire the sights around you, sat atop your horse watching the sunset, you're on the tip of a huge orange-sunburnt plateau, a ravine unfolds underneath you, a train rumbles by down below in the distance, passers-by acknowledge you a carry on their journey to the nearest town. The sound is fantastic, the sound effects executed brilliantly. There is a deep-south blue grassy folk feel to the soundtrack, which pertains to Ennio Morricone's the good the bad and the ugly. The sound track introduces various artists which add further character to the game. On entering Mexico, Jose Gonzales' "Far Away" kicks it, a memorable `shivers down spine' moment. Secondly after a climactic series of events Jamie Liddell's "Compass" begins playing; which sets the mood and epitomises John Marston's constant striving for what he holds dear to him.Underneath all this is a really cool western inspired game, the bulk of which makes you feel pretty damn good about riding around the dying west basically doing what the hell you want. You're a tobacco chewing, sawn off wielding ex outlaw. There are shoot outs, bar brawls, prostitution, gambling, killing, kidnapping, horse stealing. You raid a fort near the beginning of the game in some sort of A-team hijacked stage coach brandishing a Gatling-gun. You spring out of the roof, the music kicks in, hell breaks loose and you suddenly go..."yeah, this is what it's all about"...it clicks. It seems bizarre to conclude a review and leave out the game's mechanics and playing style. I simply feel most readers would be reasonably understanding of how the game would play, what I felt it important to include were the mesh of things that are to be appreciated that aren't instantly recognisable from watching a video or looking at the back of a box. This game will draw you in and you will become a part of its story, it will stay with you for an extremely long time. I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

There are many ways in which one could describe Red Dead Redemption in a single word; Breathtaking, spectacular, genius, brilliant, etc. They would all be right as well, as this game has to be one of the finest pieces of work to come from the Rockstar camp, even with the might of the GTA games. To describe RDR as simply GTA in the west would be an insult and quite honestly a lie as the developers have worked their socks off to bring gamers an effort worthy of the Wild West. Yes certain mechanics are similar to those found in Rockstar's cash cow project, yet RDR isn't just some cheap imitation with the R logo attached to it. This game is vast, beautiful, plays like and absolute dream, has a fantastic story line, memorable characters, great dialogue, a moving and powerful soundtrack.... I could go on and on about how this game excels, but you would need a few days to finish reading. The simple premise of the game sets the player in a fictional west, during the back end of the civil war, in the boots of ex-outlaw John Marston. Marston is a reformed man, with a wife and son, trying to make ends as a farmer and as the game's intro kicks in we see him being involuntary persuaded into tracking down his former gang, by the American government, who have now taken Marston's family hostage. From here on in we meet many varied and colourful outlaws, bandits, sheriffs, farmers, gunmen, Indians, bar girls that help bring the story of RDR together. And it is a fine story, which would make some Hollywood block busters blush. As Marston you will live the life of the cowboy that you always imagined; Duels, bar-fights, gambling, shoot-outs, hunting, horse riding, bounty hunting, horse racing, treasure hunting. There really is so much to do in this game to keep everyone's inner Clint Eastwood happy. You also have the choice of how you play the role of Marston. Do you stay reformed, or do you partake it the path of criminality again. If a stage coach gets is being chased by bandits, do you come to the rescue, or choose to aid the plunder. For every good/bad deed your notoriety changes for better or for worse, thus how people will respond to you, perks you may receive, etc. For example being a trouble maker will result in more civilians offering Marston to duel.As for the world itself, the fictional towns of America matched with deserts of Mexico are just a sight to behold. The landscape is vast and beautiful. There is something almost romantic about horse riding across a long stretch of open plain, with the sun setting in the back ground. The graphics are fantastic, even by today's next generation consoles. Many people many grumble that it is not as intense or as populated as the world of GTA, however that is where the beauty lies. You can ride horse back for lonely short periods, and all of a sudden encounter a stage coach robbery or a bandit trying to high jack your horse. It never gets boring nor dull. There is always something happening, even if it isn't quite so in-your-face like GTA.Another great feature is the sound. Voice acting is superbly done. I haven't found a lead so engrossing since David Hayter voiced Solid Snake in the original Metal Gear Solid on PS1. Marston, ultimately is a great character of bad guy-gone-good and you really do feel for his family and situation as he is out to kill his former friends for a corrupt government official. The rest of the voice overs are equally as brilliant and really add to fabulous cut-scenes.One final thought has to be for the soundtrack. It is unbelievable. If you didn't feel as though you were playing out your favourite Wild West film, then when your ears start burning to the music, then you will know that you are well on your way to being there. The entire game is just packed with beautifully orchestrated pieces that could easily belong in a Oscar winning production, yet here they are to en-sweep the gamer from the clutches of reality. Add in some very eerie and haunting vocal performances and believe me, you have brilliance. So does it stand up to GTA? Yes it does. Is it better then GTA? Yes, I believe it is, however my opinion is subjective. Will you enjoy? Without a shadow of a doubt.

I'm not usually a fan of wild west games, purely because the wild west doesn't particularly interest me. I bought this game, partially on impulse and partially because of the good reviews.I can thankfully say that this game is a LOT better than I expected, I got it on saturday morning and then spent almost the entire day playing it. It's one of those games where time really does get sucked into a black hole and before you know it, hours have passed!I like to split my reviews into pros and cons so here goes:Pros:1. There is an unbelievable amount to do in this game, from free roaming , random side missions, requests for help, mini games, main missions and just generally causing havoc.2.The mini games are not just useless fillers, they are actually quite good fun in their own right. I particularly enjoy horseshoe throwing and liar's dice.3. The graphics are outstanding. The in game graphics are very good but where the graphics shine is when you look at the scenary in the distance. Especially when it rains, the sky and clouds look just like they do in real life, you could almost be watching a film rather than playing a game.4. The dialogue is very well done. You can sometimes have to travel a long distance while on missions and you are usually travelling with another character. During these sequences, there is a lot of dialogue but again this does not seem like filler, it is entertaining and usually gives more detail as to the story.5. The gameplay is brilliant, with lots of variety. You can be shooting bad guys in one mission, racing in the next and hearding cattle in the next.6. The cover system is very well implemented and the variety of weapons means that you do need to choose carefully i.e. some weapons are slow but great for power and long range whereas other guns are quick but not as powerful so very good for dealing with multiple enemies at close range.7. The deadeye system is great fun and the introduction of the lasso gives you the option of non-fatally shooting a bad guy then capturing him alive for a bigger reward.8. The horse riding system is very well done, especially the addition of a system where you can keep pace with your companion simply by pressing and holding XCons:1. The aiming system is a little inconsistent. In order to lock onto a bad guy, you need to press the aim button when pointing in his general direction, this may or may not lock onto him. In order to lock onto another bad guy, you have to release the button and press it again, which is slow and a bit cumbersome, especially when on horseback.2. The horses are very hard to control, they always want to turn the wrong way and sometimes walk right off cliffs! They also run a mile away as soon as you get off them, meaning you have to whistle and then wait for them to run back to you. This is not only annoying but if you are in the middle of a gun fight it can get you killed!3. It is difficult to control the horse at low speeds.4. The missions along the general story path all seem a bit pointless until you get to certain ones like obtaining weapons etc. A lot of them are obvious excuses to meet new characters which then become useful later down the line. While necessary to further the story later on, at the time the missions feel a bit out of place.5. While not necessarily a con depending on your point of view, the game is obviously based on grand theft auto 4, with the same controls, similar graphics/character design etc. That being said, it is a lot smoother than grand theft auto 4 and each of the obviously copies mechanics have been polished. So, all in all, a very good game even if you don't particularly like westerns! If you liked grand theft auto and aren't adverse to riding horses rather than driving cars, give this one a go!

So much has been written before Red Dead Redemption was released, and so much has been written since that it is hard to keep up with everything that has been said so excuse this coming across as another glowing review that sounds like every other review you have read before because it probably is, and that is down, in a very large way to the fact that Red Dead Redemption lives up to every word written about it and has delivered on all the pre-release promises. You play as former Outlaw John Marston and the year is 1911, the old ways of the West are dying out as the early 20th century technology starts to encroach further and further into the old territories, changing the landscape as transport and communications rely more on the new technologies and the old ways are silently moved further into the past.GRAPHICS:With any Rockstar game you expect good visuals, whether it is new York remodelled as Liberty City for GTA 4, or taken back to the late 70's for the Warriors. The old west for Red Dead Redemption boasts some of the most impressive visuals you will see for such a expansive open world. The red sunsets falling on the lake near Blackwater cast a eerie red tint to the water as you ride down into town, or you can stand atop a huge mountain and look down on the surrounding scenery that streches on as far as the eye can see. But as if that is not enough you have some of the most beautifully rendered horses ever, thee realistic definition of their muscles and movement is incredible and looks so good.GAMEPLAY:I found the gameplay a tad easy and even with auto aim on the middle setting it was maybe not as challenging as it could have been but sure if your a real hardcore gamer you'd have found turning it off completely makes the game very satisfactory. of course it's not all about aiming, but the weapons at your disposal, and the story missions. And that is of course something Rockstar do better than most, there is a fair mix of gameplay styles that mix riding, shooting, fighting etc to keep you wanting to play, but if you decide you want to have a break there is so much else to do. There are profession mastery tasks you can undertake to give you some nice bonuses as you level them, which also provide you with much needed money for ammunition, weapons and whatever else you would wish to buy from the stores, or you could work for the law and take part in bounties, dead or alive the difference in reward matters, and of course also helps towards how people view you, and also there is horse breaking, hunting (and if your not too carful being hunted by certain animals).STORY:You do expect good stories with any Rockstar open world game and Red Dead Redemption does not disappoint, depending on your skill level the story is usually about 20 hours of length, although I may have been a fair bit slower as you do get distracted more often than not. As John Marston you must kill your former friend and fellow gang member Bill Williamson but first will need to do tasks for various people to slowly gain their trust and gain the information you require to get closer to Bill and finally Dutch. The ending is a epic ending and of course is a huge swerve, which was a brave move by Rockstar and also slightly sad, something which seemed appropriate given the times and mind set of the people your working for.I am not going to review multiplayer online, this review is based solely on the single player aspects of the game because I am not really one for online play and my opinion of multiplayer is going to be more negative than most and less unobtrusive.

At first you may be forgiven for thinking that this is just Grand Theft Auto set in the wild west, but Red Dead Redemption ends up giving far, far more. The story has you playing as John Marston, a thirty-something former outlaw who is out to "kill or capture" Bill Williamson, a former buddy of his. The story has you encounter a whole host of interesting characters, which result in anything from being dramatic to being downright hysterical. It's written very well and manages to pull you in right from the off. Despite never having any interest in the Wild West, I still managed to find myself really engrossed, and was very pleasantly surprised.Presentation-wise the game manages to do a good job.The buildings have been designed very well, and the characters as well as the environment have definitely been made up to standard. The voice acting, as has become usual for Rockstar, is also very well done, and nothing here seems out of place or lacking. The soundtrack matches well with the time period and the sound effects all do a stellar job.The game play has a lot on offer, and there is always a lot to do. In addition to all the story missions, there are side-missions and strangers that you can run in to. These people give you varying tasks, and although the tasks themselves are fun, they are also flexible, as you can start them and do them whenever you feel like. It's a very nice touch and the side missions themselves a load of fun. While the story should fetch around fifteen hours, it could go upwards to thirty five depending on how much you choose to do or not do on the way.In addition, you can also unlock newer outfits by doing different tasks, hunt animals, witness random events, play card games, arm wrestle, watch movies, herd cattle, break-in horses, bounty hunt, and a lot, lot more. The sheer number of things to do on the side are absolutely amazing, and add several hours of additional content. The dead-eye mechanic also works quite well. You're able to slow down time and place your shots carefully, which is always useful in evening the field if you find yourself outnumbered.Your actions also have somewhat of an effect in the game world. If you choose to do honourable actions, you'll eventually find that things are cheaper and people react positively. Do the opposite and your only fans would be other outlaws. The only gripe I can currently think of is that, on occasion, the game can encounter a few bugs. But note that these are minor, however, and are only things such as the mission icon not appearing on the map, which can all be fixed by simply reloading the game from where it last saved. For some reason, the multiplayer always begins with a Mexican Stand-off. Those who win can position themselves before their enemies spawn, and this is regardless of what mode is being played. It seems quite unnecessary. The modes available in multiplayer include Shootout(Deathmatch/Team Deathmatch) as well as some unique modes like Grab The Bag, where teams must take control of one bag. Or it's free-for-all variant, Gold Rush, where players try to take as many bags as possible.Naturally, you also level up and unlock new steeds and items and weaponry, which is all well and good. On a general level the multiplayer is a lot of fun to play, and even more fun when you join a "Posse" with other players and do things together. It adds several extra hours of play and is all great. While games that are usually released in May have a tendency to be mediocre, this is completely different. In fact, it's one of the best games I've ever played!

Red Dead Redemption has been called (By a lot of people) GTA IV in the Wild West, which is pretty damn accurate. Considering the fact that it's made by Rockstar, perhaps that's not surprising. It doesn't really differ much from the standard GTA gameplay all that much, but that means you still get a solid, albeit it maybe too familiar experience. The story is good, if a little cliche. Basically, the government have taken John Marston's wife and son to blackmail him into rounding up/killing the members of an old gang he rode with. There's quite the twist at the end that shakes it up a fair amount, though. I won't spoil that for you, though. It's not much, but it works to keep the game advancing. If there's one thing that Red Dead Redemption deserves a lot of praise for, it's definitely the animation, especially on the horses. Get them galloping, and you'll see the muscles underneath their skin moving, and everything just moves as it should. The running, grabbing, lassoing... It all looks realistic, and that's a pretty damn good achievement. Jumping, on the other hand, looks good in the most cases, but it can look a bit weird if you're jumping over rooftops and such. The graphics are actually really good too, considering the vastness of the world. There's a few off moments, though. Faces can look a bit odd at times, and the world can sometimes look a bit washed out. I can attribute that to the intensity of the sun, but it makes the world look that bit less rich, and it subtracts from the overall experience of the game. The range of weapons that can be found in the game is impressive, ranging from rifles to pistols, throwing knives to molotov cocktails, and even throwing in cannons and machine guns for good measure. It all lends itself to some really good firefights, much better ones than I've seen in the GTA series. It might be that I just prefer older weapons, but it feels a hell of a lot more satisfying! If there's one criticism that I have about this game, it's that sometimes the travelling takes an age. There's not really as much to keep your attention as there is on games like GTA and it gets a little boring. Most of the world is really just slightly hilly plains with a few settlements here and there. While you can get stagecoaches to ferry you around, you have to make sure that you have enough money for them. Usually it's not a big problem, but there's been times where I haven't had the money to go all that far, which means I had one hell of a brain-numbing horse journey to get to where I needed to go. It's good that they managed to create such a huge and relatively diverse world, but it seems to be a bit excessive here. When you're in a town, though, options start to open up. You can get drunk in the bar, have a shoot-out in the bar while drunk, go on a police-killing rampage, tie people to train tracks... The list goes on. It's kind of like what you can do in GTA IV, but adapted for the setting of Red Dead Redemption. There's also shops in town where you can replenish ammo and buy new guns, so you'll probably be visiting those pretty frequently. The revamped Dead Eye works well, but it's nothing particularly astounding. The game is pretty long, to say the least. It took me probably 30-40 hours to go through, and that was mainly just blitzing through the story. There's a lot of things to do in Red Dead's world, but it's a real shame that those things are largely focused in rare spots on the map.

I find this an awesome game set a mere 48 years before I was born - were things really that rough out west then? So I'm an older gamer and here's my take on this bit of history. Plenty of reviewers have mentioned the story and the intricacy of this game so I won't repeat them. The highlights I've enjoyed 15 hours in so far (in no particular order): walking through a downpour to a poker game and hearing the rain drumming on the metal roof of the shack during the game. Rescuing cattle in the onset of a huge thunderstorm - what a great piece of theatre. Classic western shoot-outs complete with ricochets, taunts and - yup actually blowing a branch off a classic desert cactus by mistake (I'm a rotten shot despite the nice "Dead Eye" feature).Rescuing ladies about to be murdered and blowing away the bad guys (immensely satisfying for old codgers like me in these politically correct days). Good ol' western duels. Accidentally chasing a bit part character into the path of a train - had only myself to blame for busting that storyline! And riding through that immense and lovingly crafted landscape knowing I can go just about anywhere I want. There are times I just pause and take in the huge views (gorgeous on 1080p HDMI). To me, this is all really good stuff.I often game using earphones with TV-attached hi-fi (Dolby etc) to avoid disturbing others. So I can say the sound environment is as well crafted as the visual. Outdoors: wind rustling brush and blowing tumbleweed, cicadas chirping in bushes in baking sunlight, rattlesnakes rattling (and they do bite as I discovered). Indoors: the wonderful ambience of the saloon bars where alongside the honky-tonk piano, chairs scrape on wood floors and conversation in the large room has the echo the room size would truly give it. Good voice lines and ambience for NPCs. Game music - not too intrusive and reacts to action, in the earlier stages reminiscent of that curious sci-fi / western TV series "Firefly", as well as Ennio Morricone.I find John Marston a likeable character to play. His conversation is well rounded, full of character and consistent. I can see myself coming out with "much obliged" instead of "thank you", in a pub before long. Riding to places with company, and no GTA radio to listen to, means that a lot of conversation fills the game. It rounds the story out well. Conversation with other plot characters is equally well crafted, natural and consistent. If I had to toss any criticism at this game, well all I can say is sometimes character faces look a little oddly shadowed in places. Some NPC characters occasionally do weird things like glide without walking, or a horse will race up a cliff. I also wonder if the game could get a bit same-ish after a while. Saving can be a hassle - nearly completing a mission only for some silly sideline incident to kill you (a duel, a coyote chewing you up), meaning you have to repeat the mission or checkpoint. I would have preferred easier saves. I sometimes use the "campsite" save as a quick-save strategy. I have had one crash - maybe my fault for accidentally button-mashing at the wrong moment; seems stable otherwise.Previously I played the largely linear Juarez games and enjoyed them greatly. If you like westerns and want the sandbox freedom to play the plotlines or to relax and roam and lose yourself in a beautifully crafted environment, then this is a really top notch piece of work.

First I will give you a bit of a background on why i'm writing a review for this game.I was never into western films of any kind then all of a sudden for some reason I decided to watch loads of western films - ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, MAN WITH NO NAME TRILOGY, THE SEARCHERS, RIO BRAVO etc and really enjoyed them, they were adventure and action (everything I wanted).I then heard about this game and at first it didn't interest me but then the hype got the best of me and after reading loads of things about it in magazines and on the Amazon forums I decided to buy it.So in this review I will talk about the good and the bad point of the game.THE STORY:The story takes place in 1911 when theWILD west is dying and the character you play is JOHN MARSTON an ex gunslinger who is forced to go back into the business of killing because federal agents have kidnapped his children.THE GAMEPLAYIf you have played GTA 4 then you know what to expect, I just thought it was GTA in the west, so rather then cars its horses and carts. The game is very playable and fans of GTA will enjoy it.THE GOOD:The game is huge and I mean HUGE. In the box of the game you get a map and unfolded it takes up half of my bedroom floor, so that gives you an idea of the size of the game. There is plenty of missions to do, strangers to help, shops to visit, gunslingers to kill and if you fancy it just explore the entire place and it's that big I haven't even finished the game yet. It's epic in scope. The controls are responsive and quick so no pressing the button then 5 mins after it responds. Riding horses is fun too just don't over tire them. The people you meet along the way are varied and fun to talk to in their own way. Most offer missions in the sense of helping them before they help you and there are mini games like throwing horse shoes, cards, going to the cinems etc.The game is split into 3 places - America, Mexico, America. There is that much I could talk abut I could be here all day so now I'll tell you about the bad in the game.THE BAD:The beginning of the game makes you do boring missions like pick flowers, do nightwatch, heard cows and horse and it doesn't open up until you have done a few of these missions. When the game does open you getting from one place to another can be a chore as most of the scenery looks the same and every now and then an animal will pass you but not a lot happens during the trekking here and there. All the saloons look the same and you can't interact with the locals even when they say hello. Some outlaws will just decide to start shooting at you for no reason at all.As in GTA 4 you can have a yellow line on the map to help you where to go. So you may rely on that a little too much (I did) and it got repetative - go here, kill him, get item he stole, take it back. Next mission, go here talk to her, get item take it here. Next mssion - Take him here, cover him by killing people.OVERALL:The game is a good game but not brilliant as many people would have you believe and it is GTA in the west, like I said there is plenty to do like hunt outlaws from wanted posters to money, missions and other things but the repetative gameplay begins to sink in too soon and I would say it is worth the 35 / 40 quid you pay for it.And it makes you want to watch the Spaghetti westerns with Clint Eastwood as it does remind you a lot about them films.
