Before reading any further, if you are trying to decide between the "starter pack" or the "booster pack" take one major thing in consideration!** The new Portal of Power which comes with the Skylanders Giant's start pack is a USB CONNECTED and DOES NOT require batteries at all and DOES work with the first game too - making it a massive reason to upgrade!!! **I absolutely loved the first game and only stopped playing for ONE simple reason - the batteries kept running out and they have finally fixed this ONE negative aspect of the game.So even if you already own a portal of power from the first game, it is actually good value for money to buy the new starter pack again for Giants because 1)You get 3 new characters 2) You get a portal of power which is USB powered and 3) its actually the same price as the booster pack anyway on Amazon at least. Why they didn't do this in the first place is beyond me?Anyway the game itself...The game works and feels almost exactly like the last one except the odd change and mostly improvements. If you loved the first one like I did, you will love this one even more.- The story is slightly shorter but its still lengthy story campaign.- A new max level of 15 with old and new characters.- More abilities to unlock for old characters.- The ability to choose the difficulty including easy, normal, hard and NIGHTMARE once you complete the game once.- Slightly crisper and nicer graphics.- The in-game movies have been improved a lot visually, but still the lip-syncing is a completely off.- They have removed the shaking of the stick to open boxes and now its just bashing the 'A' button instead.- Now Kaos is a lot less annoying a character to listen to on screen!- The new Giants are beautifully made, just like the previous toys.- The Giants have eyes and certain parts which light up when on the portal.- The new POP actually lights up at the bottom now and again it is now USB connected!!You also have a whole new set of season 2 characters which have orange bases and new stances (but are basically the same existing characters standing differently). They have also added a whole bunch of new features which just improve on the game as a whole.- You can now spend your ingame gold on stuff..... imagine that!!- You can buy hats, challenges and other items so all that gold saved up from the previous game can be used now.- Also *UPDATE AFTER FINISHING THE GAME* the end fight with Kaos is actually well designed, fun and does not drag on and on and on like the first one did! Great improvement!!Skylanders is one a game which is easy to mock and insult because it comes off as an attempt to make money out of kids and parents and yes it is! But it can't be ignored that Skylanders is actually a very well designed, built and thought-out product with a MASSIVE amount of re playability to it.Its all your own personal choice if you choose to buy all the characters, but would maybe buying a new triple pack every month really hurt your pocket? That extends the game lifespan by another month or two a lone every time you get a new set of characters. It works and its great and now that the POP is USB powered there really is nothing I can honestly say is negative about the game.... except if your a parent with kids... I feel sorry for you.

I'm 32 now, I've seen Pogs, Tamagotchis and Furbys all come and go - I was certain I could see when a mediocre product was being marketed as a craze and the inner cynic in me thought that Skylanders was a ridiculously over-priced concept designed to appeal to kids. Then I was bought Skylanders at Christmas by someone rather amazing. Now I'd defend it to the death! For those who, like me a few months ago, don't really 'get' how it all works: Skylanders is an action role play game in which you guide a character around a fantasy world called Skylands where you must solve puzzles and defeat baddies in order to progress. A 'portal' plugs into your console,by placing different Skylander figures on the portal you change the character in the game. This is a great strategy game, some Skylanders are faster than others, some have different skills and some are able to unlock otherwise inaccessible areas. You get three Skylanders (2 regular size and 1 giant) which are enough to complete the game with, but to make it more fun and if you want to do all the sub-games then you need more Skylanders, and once you start playing this - you *will* want more Skylanders! The build quality is excellent, the Skylanders themselves are tough plastic and very detailed. They don't look mass-manufactured and many of the figures are impressive to look at, they won't easily break. The Portal of Power which plugs into the console doesn't require batteries (I believe older versions did) and it has a soothing glow which cycles through various colours. It is very responsive and the moment you remove a Skylander and replace it with another the game reacts instantly. There's a snobbish tendency to view gaming as a fairly low-brow activity, but this is not only an immersive game, it's very interactive and requires a lot of thinking. My 6 year old daughter *loves* Skylanders and finds some of the puzzles very challenging (I'm more than happy to help!). Since acquiring these we have purchased two more Skylanders, they aren't too expensive (less than a tenner) and are available second hand too on auction websites. The amount of play value is exceptional, the game has had hours invested in it and she has thoroughly enjoyed it. I too have enjoyed playing it alongside her and a lot of the dialogue (particularly from Flynn, the ship's captain) is amusing and not at all childish. It's been interesting seeing her confidence in the game grow as she figures stuff out, she has personalised the game by giving her 'Landers hats and looks forward to spending time with me and going on adventures in Skyland. The game looks great, movement is smooth and the graphics pretty impressive. The characters are controlled easily and intuitively, the sound effects and various voices have all been created perfectly and even after many hours the game has never once become boring. In a nutshell: A silly fad? A waste of money? No. This is a fantastic concept which works brilliantly and provides so much entertainment that it easily becomes great value for money. My name is Dan, I'm 32 years of age, and I can proudly say that I love Skylanders!

My sons *love* Skylanders, especially Giants and were very keen to save up for this. It's a great game series for children and I especially like the co-operative 2 player element. The physical toy element however is pure evil genius, so if you are unfamiliar with how it all works, here are the basics:- You buy the game in a pack like this which comes with 3 characters in the form of toy figurines. You also get a little platform called the 'Portal of Power' which lights up, changes colour and is needed for the game to work.- One or two toy figures must be placed on top of the 'Portal' (depending on whether one or two people are playing). Each one of those figures- It seems like magic and amazing technology if you grew up on Pac-Man and Space Invaders, but this is the evil genius / cynical part - there are *loads* of playable characters to buy, making it like a video game version of football stickers, with children collecting and swapping different characters. However the flip-side of this is that you do get to enjoy a different playing experience, and at least you get something physical for your money which can still be played with when they've had enough screen-time. The other good thing about these figures is that they work on any game system. For example, my son has a friend who is also into Skylanders but he has a Wii while we have an Xbox 360. However, both boys can take their Skylanders and play them on each other's systems or lend them to each other.Luckily the game has been out long enough that you can find plenty of reasonably priced second hand figures on line, in video game shops or by asking parents of other children. It's a formula that has worked so well that Disney has copied it with their 'Infinity' range, and the Skylanders series will be extended to the fourth game in Autumn 2014.Content-wise, I personally don't think there's anything inappropriate for a 7 year old as per the PEGI rating, but your opinion may differ.I have seen one review complaining about the lack of a save function. This is a gripe I have with most console games versus PC games in that you can't save the exact current 'state', you have to proceed to the next stage or autosave point. This does pose a potential problem if you limit screen-time (as I do). In my case, because I checked out the game beforehand and noticed this, I made it clear from the start that the end of 'play time' may not coincide with a save point. There is resistance from time to time but generally the boys are compliant because they know it would be put away or sold on if it became a problem. However, realistically, this will vary from child to child and you obviously have to decide how you approach it with yours.

This version of the game is intended for those that already had the Original Skylanders. The pack contains some paperwork cards, stickers the game disc and your first Giant Skylander Tree Rex. Despite the game title its hard even as an adult to not think.."wow he really is giant". It is also impossible not to be impressed when placing him on the Portal causes his eyes and photosynthesis cannon light up. Essentially, it's a really nice model and your Skylander fan kids will be suitably impressed. The game itself has a familiar feel about it, many elements of the storyline and missions will make you feel right at home without leaving you feeling like you've done it all before. There are some great 'in-game'games to play in addition to the story chapters. Possibly the most exciting being 'Arena mode' which is activated after completing one of the early chapters. Skystones is also a good addition helping your younglings to learn how to think strategically. One small but nice touch is giving you something to do with the 'legendary treasures' you find along the way. In way similar to Skylanders Online, where you change the appearance of your Skylands, you can customise your 'base of operations' (don't want to give away too much). There are a few things to be aware before diving in:1)You can use series 1 Skylanders but they won't increase in level or add their heroic challenges. You can, however, spend the oodles of money they might have accumulated previously in this game..very useful. EDIT: 13/11/2012 Actually the series 1 Skylanders DO level up to 15!2)To upgrade you Skylanders stats to the max. You will have to purchase the Series 2 skylanders and Giants to make stat improving Heroic challenges available.3)You can get through the game with 1 Giant and your old Series 1 SkylandersThere is no question though, this is a great game, its not just a 'release it quick and cash in' cop out. The developers have struck a rather nice balance of making a huge add-on available for Skylanders, whilst generating themselves continued income. They have to be entitled to something don't they? Adults can enjoy it as much as the kids, its not just about shooting! It seems to be raining an awful lot these days, but in our household rainy days are great because me and the kids spend time playing together...now if we could just convince mum to give it a try.Update 08/11/2012:Have seen a review regarding the portal not being compatible. This is doesn't make sense unless The Nintendo Wii pack was purchased and used with the DS Portal??? We are using our original portal.

I bought this product after being a big fan of the first game. When I owned the first game I finished it and was left bored with loads of figures doing nothing. I sold the first game after a while as well as all the figures I collected. When the second game came out I thought it would be similar and would be a waste of money. I had some money from Christmas so I decided to get it too see what it was like and I made a great decision. This game has improved so much, you can now replay the game on many different difficulties including a nightmare mode which can be unlocked after completing the game on a different difficulty. You can also use your money to buy things like hats.In the new game you can now use treasure for different things. Some treasure can be used to customize your ship, others get you discount on upgrades. The giants are brilliant they are absolutely massive and can do loads of things normal skylanders cant like throw rocks, pull islands and lift large logs. Giant figures also light up like the special lightcore figure which cost about the same amount as giants but are not as powerful in game. The game is good but if set to a difficulty too high for you can get boring when you have to reset the chapter all the time. You are better off getting the starter pack even if you already have the original game. There is about £10 difference between the sets and you get an extra 2 characters and a wired portal of power. The original portal for ps3 is wireless but because of the new light feature the wireless one would use too much battery power meaning you would have to keep changing your battery. The wire for the new portal is very long and can be used from quite a distance. The controls are very simple and can be used by anyone. The figures for the game remember their experiences and can be used on all different platform. Skylanders giants comes in quite a bulky box and the accessories and figures take quite a lot of space but considering how good the game is I thinks its worth it!! Overall I think skylanders giants is a great game and worth the investments.

There's something truly crafty about how Skylanders Giants works. On the surface, it’s a fairly straightforward but incredibly well-made action-platformer where you guide a cutesy creature through 16 stages of collecting, upgrading, monster-bashing, and exploring. But beneath that is a big world of physical DLC — instead of downloading maps or characters, you buy additional Skylanders figurines so you can explore everything the game has to offer. Sure, you can complete Giants with your initial starter pack of three Skylanders (two standard characters and one Giant) plus a Portal of Power (the peripheral on which you place a figure so its virtual likeness enters the game world),but only certain characters can access some secrets and optional paths. So it’s to Giants’ highly polished credit that you never feel duped into purchasing any of its dozens of well-crafted figurines. (And your Skylanders from the first game cross over to your new adventure with their levels and stats in tow.) Each densely designed stage plays well to all the different Skylanders elements. For instance, in areas of a level’s critical path, you’ll be encouraged to swap between characters to spotlight their varying strengths, but it feels more like a challenge than a requirement.Leveling up your Skylanders unlocks new character-specific abilities, which in turn gives you different ways to weather the tougher objectives and mini-games — and adds plenty of replayability. The new, lumbering Giants also introduce a layer of charm and variety, and their size-specific skillsets make stumbling upon secrets, purchasing stat-boosting goofy hats, and tussling with NPCs in Skystones card games a silly pleasure. There’s a gentle magic in Giants’ cunning formula, but it’s a spell that collectible-minded gamers of all ages will find incredibly hard to resist.

i bought this for my partners 39th birthday. lol.he got addicted to our sons spyro's adventure and when he'd completed that I decided to buy daddy the giants. The giants continues with the story from spyros adventure beautifully - you will be able to see were Kaos ended up. lol.Well it has gone down a treat. The characters included in the box are excellent. With Tree Rex being the favorite (tree rex is a giant - the other two - jet vac and cynder - are skylanders series 2) Tree Rex is also great because he lights up when he is placed on the portal of power - his eyes shine blue, and a gem in his hand shines green.if you already have skylanders spyros adventure you will be pleased to know that your previous characters can still be used in the new game,on the new portal - with the added bonus that you can continue to level them up further to level 15!!! 5 levels more than with spyros adventure. (it will also save you money, as you can use your previous skylanders to unlock certain zones in the new game)Also, the portal with the giants game is on a lead which plugs into the usb at the back of your wii, the lead is really long so is good if you like to sit away from the t.v with the portal next to you. Also it will save you so much money in batteries which is great. (please note though, the portal will continue to stay lit even when the wii is on standby, to turn it off you will have to unplug it from the usb port)Overall, a great game and a great buy.Very happy with this purchase.

When my son announced that he wanted the Skylanders Game for his fifth birthday I wasn't particularly enthusiastic. I have seen my son attempt other games on the Playstation (Spiro and Ratchet and Clank) and although he likes pressing buttons and moving the figures the difficulty of the game quickly outstrips his skills and then he becomes bored. However, every time he wrote a birthday list, Skylanders was at the top. I bought the starter pack while it was on sale and got a very decent deal and decided that when he got bored with it I could always sell it on. How wrong was I! The game's difficulty settings allow for me to set it a a very easy level that my son can play. What's more, during more challenging parts I am able to connect a second controller to the PS3, place a second figure on the portal and play along to help my son through the part he is struggling with. As soon as we are through I can swap out and he can continue on his own. Of course he is now asking for more figures (the in game advertising for the figures is a bit heavy handed) and I can see there being a limit to how much I am prepared to spend on the 'ad ons', even with Christmas approaching. Still, the graphics are amazing. The ability to swap characters on the portal is interactive and highly appealing and the difficulty seems just right for a younger gamer.

My 5 year old daughter already had a few of the figures as play toys so she got the game for Xbox for christmas. She loves it, on easy difficulty it's perfect for her as you can't fall off the islands which would be quite frustrating. The only issue we've had is the Xbox controller is slightly too big for her hands so when she gets to a bit that involves prolonged use of both the D-pad and action buttons i become co-pilot. We both enjoy this as we're working as a team. She's only done the first 4 chapters but enjoys looking round smashing items for treasure so she's already racked up a few hours game time on it. You could probably complete each chapter in just a few minutes if you just stick to the missions. The most fun she has is swapping the figures over ie.when a fire element skylander is stronger in a certain area she loves choosing which one to bring into the game. The puzzles are great and she can pretty much figure them out on her own but does have some minor prompting to help her on, the Skystones mini game seems good but not sure if this may become boring after a few games. As stated by many, the game/portal is a bargain at £30 but you can easily spend 10x that on figures, if you shop around though there are often bargains out there, before christmas ASDA did 3 for £15 (including Giants)

Just for your info really.I like to buy stuff from good, nice companies that have a conscience.Activision are a giant company who seem to not care about their customers. Its almost impossible to find how to contact them, email being almost the only option, which they then ignore. The games are good, and I am sure the programmers get their good salaries. But the bosses and managers who run the company get the most money from selling them.My sons Xmas day was ruined because Activision had put the WII starter kit inside a PC box, so on Xmas day, my sons excitement was quashed, and he became very sad on this Xmas day!Amazon were amazing! They quickly replaced the wrong unit with the right one, free postage, quick, courteous response etc.I wrote two emails to Activision, via their web site with no response.Very poor. The games are good, reasonable money, but I am now not a fan of Activision, and wont be buying any more of their kids products, and will wait for Disneys version, which I am sure will be better value too. The fact that people are labelling Skylanders as "crack" for kids, may be correct, and perhaps the people who run the company are as nice as drug dealers :(

Bought this for my 8 year old son's birthday. The pack contains the portal, which plugs into the xbox, one giant and two small Skylander figures and the game disk. The portal is a bit flimsy and wouldn't survive having the figures slammed onto it as shown in the TV ads, but it does look pretty cool as it pulses colours when plugged in.Being a big kid myself, I have to say the quality of the figures really surpised me. Lots of detail and are nice little ornaments for my lad's room when not in play. The game itself seems pretty basic, with lots of smashing stuff and some simple puzzles solved by pushing blocks around. Some puzzles can only be solved by certain types of character, which is why Skylanders will have parents buying new figures regularly. My boys 4 & 8 love the game which can be played together by putting two figures on the portal. They enjoy collecting tokens in the game and saving them for specific character upgrades, so it is very tenuously educational.

I bought this for my Godsons 7th Birthday.....he nearly fell off his chair with excitement when he opened it. A fantastic starter pack with everything you need...Wii game, portal, 3 figures, cards and stickers. It was the cheapest deal I could find both on & off the internet on the 1st May...however bit disappointed that 5 weeks down the line it is already £12.00 cheaper!!! It has been played with nonstop since he received it, as many of his friends also have it and love the whole concept of the game. There are many figures that can be bought individually or in multi packs to accessorize this game, either giants or minis with some lighting up, which he has already done with some of his birthday money...hence an extremely happy young boy.Highly recommended for an action packed game to keep them amused....although I have to say I didn't have a clue what was going on when I joined him for a game...hey ho thats what getting old does for you!!!!

This is a great game for the Wii.We got it for our six year old's birthday and he loves it. He and his seven year old sister play the game together and are fascinated by all the characters and their special powers. As we limit their Wii time they also pretend to be the characters and play out adventures using their imagination. The individual characters make a great present idea for relatives to buy any kid who has this game and I can see these being part of birthday and Christmas presents for years to come - even for Mum and Dad. Our younger children are also keen to help build up the collection of characters so it's a good game for getting the whole family involved. The game has lots of levels,is fun to play and looks great so I'd thoroughly recommend it.Amazon had the best deal when we bought this and it was delivered free of charge and free of hassle.

Where can I start? My son and I are hooked. We play skylanders every oppotunity we can get. It encourages team work as players have to stick together. Its clever, you place the figure you want to play on the portal (a round castle turret that glows, that is attached to the back of your wii by a usb cable) and he appears in the game. Each figure has different abilities and a different personality. We've planned all the figures we're going to buy. It helps (not essential) to have a figure from each of the element groups (water/fire/sky etc) so that you can do all of the challenges. Its cleverly made so that once you've run out of life your player has to rest, and if you go through all your players in this way, you'll want to buy more to play longer! Bonus, the 'spyro's adventure' figures work on sylanders giants! (But not the other way round).Worth every penny!
