Let me start by saying that I am 13 and love most of the franchises in this game (the only exceptions are Ninjago and Chima, as I haven't watched them). It's handy to know that at the time of this review Year 1 of Dimensions' three year plan is coming to a close, with new franchises being released in the following waves of Year 2. The list of known franchises is:Year 1:-Doctor Who-Ghostbusters-Lord of the Rings-Jurassic World-Portal-The Simpsons-The Wizard of Oz-Scooby-Doo-Back to the Future-Midway Arcade-DC Comics-LEGO Movie-LEGO Ninjago-LEGO ChimaYear 2:-Harry Potter-Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them-Adventure Time-Sonic the Hedgehog-The A Team-Gremlins-The Goonies-Teen Titans GO!-MissionImpossible-E.T The Extra Terrestrial-LEGO City Undercover-BeetleJuice-Ghostbusters (2016 reboot)-The LEGO Batman Movie-The Powerpuff Girls-Knight RiderSo, let's start this review then.WHAT YOU GET:Included in the Starter Pack are:- 1x Base game- 1x Portal Pad- 1x Bagged pieces for Portal Gateway- 1x Batman figure.- 1x Gandalf figure- 1x Wyldstyle figure- 1x Batmobile vehicle- 1x Lego Dimensions PosterThis is all you need to complete all 14 story levels.PLOT:The base game includes 14 45 minute(ish) levels to dig into, with each level covering a different Year 1 franchise (Chima, Jurassic World and LEGO Movie are missed out due to lack of content). The levels are all connected, following the story of Batman (Troy Baker), Gandalf (Tom Kane) and Wyldstyle's (Elizabeth Banks) epic quest to save the LEGO Multiverse by defeating the evil Lord Vortech (Gary Oldman) who has employed villains such as The Joker and Saruman the White to venture into the different worlds and collect the Foundation Elements, important objects from each world (e.g the element in Portal is the Cake) so he can have complete power. Along the way, they meet characters like The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Doctor Emmet Brown (Christopher Lloyd).GAMEPLAY:As stated in the PLOT section, the game has 14 levels with normal LEGO gameplay (build, break, fight, collect etc.). The levels cover about half of the game. The other half are the Adventure Worlds. These worlds are areas based on a franchise (one world for each one) and they all have quests to complete, places to explore and gold bricks to find. Another fun thing that they've added in this game are renovations. When you enter a world for the first time parts of it will be in disrepair (for example: Elrond's Council Room is broken) but you can save up your studs and use them to fix up these parts (Elrond's renovation costs 55,000 studs, which isn't very much at all.) Once you have renovated a building, it's fixed forever. Hooray! The Starter Pack includes the DC Comics world, The Lord of the Rings world and the LEGO Movie world. Other worlds come with other packs (e.g the Simpsons Level Pack unlocks The Simpsons world). For Year 2 characters (they have gold discs so you can recognise them from Year 1 characters) each pack unlocks a 4 player battle arena. WARNING: Only Year 2 packs unlock arenas, but all Year 1 characters can play inside the arenas.QUALITY:The LEGO is of usual high standard, and the story is well made. It's a real treat to battle Flying Monkeys in Oz, fight Lord Business in Springfield and meet the Doctor on a Cyberman/Weeping Angel/Dalek infested planet. Authentic soundtrack music is used in the levels and in the worlds, and each world feels unique, like a slice of the franchise it belongs to.CONCLUSION:You should buy this game. It may seem like a high price item, but remember that most LEGO is. Even if you decide to just stick with what you get in the Starter, the worlds and levels you get are enough to make up a good LEGO game.Happy times and places,Lucas

As with Skylanders and Disney Infinity, Lego has decided to go the "toy meets game" route. After watching/teaming with our son as he played through all 3 Disney Infinity games, Lego Movie, Lego Marvel, Lego Hobbit, Lego Jurassic World and the Lego Batman games we thought this would be a great present for him. However, unlike the mentioned Lego games Dimensions feels like it is missing a dimension. Gone are the dozens of characters for unlocking, instead replaced with the need to spend real world money on a limited cast of characters. Outside of the main levels it quickly becomes evident that the "add-on" characters are required to experience the game properly, unless the player wants to spend time collecting obscene amounts of studs to temporarily (30 seconds) the required character. The main game levels are fun, well designed and at times require some thinking to do the puzzles. The interaction between mini-figs and the Lego base has been given thought resulting in something that is regularly altered. The little nods/references to the dimension they are taking place in are good for both adults and kids. All in all, the main levels offer more of a challenge than those found in Disney Infinity and more variety. It is fun travelling through locations set in Middle-Earth, Springfield, the Who-verse and even Portal - all hint at the fantasticness that could be available in the "additional" levels. The story is entertaining and we particularly enjoyed how the Doctor Who level (A Dalektable Adventure) brought an element of fear to the game. However, the "additional" levels feel very short, especially for the price being paid for them. The exploring worlds also feel small and lack the depth/character interactions that something like NYC had in Lego Marvel or Middle-Earth had in Lego Hobbit.I'm not a fan of the way companies use the "toy meets game" concept, (currently) between £10-15 for one character or £20/25 for a character/level is too high and in Lego's gaming universe it strips some of the fun out of the game. In the past lesser known characters (e.g. Booster Gold in Batman 3) still had the chance to be playable in Lego games but now players are stuck with characters that are already the main stars in their own Lego games and most Lego fans probably already own the mini-figs of.The Dimension mini-figs are regular Lego mini-figs that stand on (and can be removed from) blue bases containing electronic tags, which means they can be played with away from Dimensions. The add-on packs are not locked to particular consoles/platforms. The Lego base is USB powered and requires building, the electronic onscreen instructions is a fun way to do this.Dimensions is fun but feels like a money making concept rather than a fully fleshed out game - especially with the short expensive add-ons. Unlike Disney Infinity there is no "sand-box creation" mode and replay value without the add-ons looks limited. To quote Lord Business; "Where is the Special?"

My 11 year old son has been saving his money for a long time and decided to spend the whole lot of it on Lego Dimensions starter pack. I was not overly keen as seems a crazy amount for a video game but he reckons it was worth every penny.Bit frustrating at start up as we had to do a massive update which took half an hour. The kids could have used this time to be building the portal and the bat mobile etc but the instructions said that it was to be built along with in game instructions and they wanted to do it properly so waited. With hind site I would have made them get on with portal building as this takes a while and by the time the update had run and they had built the portal it was nearly time for them to go to bed .The game comes with Batman,Wild Style, Gandalph and the bat mobile. The base was a bit confusing at first as it lights up different colours in different areas and you have to move the characters around sometimes to get different actions. For example, at certain times one area of the the portal makes them giant and the other makes them tiny. Now they have got the hang of this though it's good and make the game more interactive than Disney Infinity or skylanders. He has been playing it as much as he has been allowed to for the last week, sometimes alone and sometimes with his 8 year old sister. They can play it split screen if they want to but prefer to have one of them on the telly and the other using the game pad. This seems to work really well and they can both run about doing their own thing, calling each other over when they need help. They finished the actual story of the game after a week which worried me as I thought that was the main gameplay over but has made no different to their interest. There are so many open worlds for them to explore, things to unlock. Different characters have different abilities so when they return to areas with different characters there's more to do.My daughter bought the back to the future level pack to go with it and though the level seemed quite short they are both quite happy with their purchases and now can fly around with Marty Mcfly on the hover board and have various different skills. New level packs are on both their Christmas lists. I dropped a start because I do think they are a bit overpriced and the game has frozen a couple of times and needed to be rebooted but my kids would give it 5 stars.

It is a year later since we got this and it is still cheaper then its currently being sold for.£65.00 in Tesco!, lego dimensions is fantastic and offers hours of fun for your children.Lego dimensions is fantastic and offers a fully immersive experience for children of all ages, boys, girls the selection now available on Dimensions is to say at least impressive Harry Potter, Sonic, Batman, Simpsons, LOTR , there is so much and the expansions are reasonably priced, Dimensions is fantastic.Word to the wise would be, to set this up alone and do not let the children loose with it as you have to assemble everything. When I say everything it literally is that, everything you can see on the box you have to assemble,as its lego its easy to lose and is not the kids fault if pieces are lost before the portal is constructed. The game has so much to offer with new characters / expansion packs always being added.Ensure you keep hold of the discs for the characters too as if you lose one then you may not be able to play the game.I write this review as a parent of 3 and have gone through the whole process I am telling you to avoid.Lost pieces - Shortly after opening on Christmas Day, its lego for kids its there to be built / played with - Eliminate any time wasted / any pieces falling off the face of the earth, honestly hindsight is great and on reflection I would have pre built it prior to being unwrapped.Lost discs & character pieces - We have had both done again its being lego and the fact when they was not playing the game they would use them with their other lego sets etcA sidetip of advice what I have now done is to get all the characters as a lego figures, so the dimension characters do not leave and when they are finished go in the Lego box with everything - It has taken over a year to master this!If our review provided you with a solution & helped please select Yes on if this review was helpful

My son had asked for lego dimensions for his birthday. At the time I knew nothing about it and did lots of research comparing lego dimensions to Disney infinity. Needless to say my son was delighted to open this on his birthday, and couldn't wait to get it opened so we could start building it. The box contains the game disc, base, the pieces to build the 'portal' as my son calls it and includes 3 figures - batman, wyldstyle and gandalf plus the batmobile. It didn't take too long to build, however the game needed quite a big update when first installed which didn't go down well with an impatient 5 year old who was desperate to try it out!In hindsight I should have put the disc in and let it update while we were building. The base is a lot smaller than I had imagined, but this is not a bad thing as it doesn't take up as much room as anticipated. Great quality, base is sturdy and looks really impressive when switched on as it lights up and changes colour. Another thing I was impressed with was the length of the cable that connects the base to the Xbox console - allows you to sit a fair distance from the TV & console and still switch your characters on the base etc. as you play, without having to jump up and down to do it all the time. The only downside is that it could work out very expensive in the long run with all of the add-ons that you need to buy separately (level packs, fun packs, team packs), but there is a good selection of these with lots of familiar characters and themes....hopefully they will continue to release different ones.Lots of fun has been had with this so far

i bought my 7 year old son Lego dimensions firstly because he is a massive fan, secondly because of the great franchises attached to the game. I've been watching him for over a week (every chance he gets) play this game, it's very clever and in my opinion better than the other toys to life platforms, firstly you build the characters/vehicles and then place them onto the portal and watch them become part of the game. The voices are those of the actual actors which adds to the coolness. The figurines are a little expensive but very collectible and I'm sure parents/grandparents will buy them for treats, birthdays etc. Gameplay is typically the same as past Lego games but the formula works, where it is different is all your favourite characters working together in a well known surrounding I.e Homer Simpson, batman and the ghostbusters in a back to the future level. Totally whacky but brilliant fun. I think the Wii U version is probably better than other platforms simply because you use the game pad screen for 1player and TV for other with co-op play (no split screens) and can still play 1 player if someone else is using TV (via game pad). If your on the fence as to whether buy this or shell out for infinity 3.0 (we own that also) as cool as that is I would say this has the better gameplay and is a little more inventive. There is a ton of characters available too and there really is something for everyone. I don't think your little ones will be disappointed, go buy.

Bought this for my son for Christmas and its the only thing hes been interested with since. Every minute of the day hes talking about lego dimensions and which character does what within the game.To add on the kits for this game does get very expensive (since Christmas i have already spent over £250 on the add on kits) there are so many add ons that when i read they are making no more 'waves' i was soooo relieved. Some packs can cost over £25 for 4 tags (2 characters and 2 vehicles/planes ect) which is stupid money when you think what your buying is a little lego figure and pieces of lego but kids today are spoilt rotten (especially mine)and everything lego has risen stupidly in price in the years since i was a kid.Another down side is the wait time for it to download content which takes for ever and requires patience which young kids dont have. The story mode add ons also are not clearly written how to 1st play them and download it onto the system (i had to youtube it!!)The game itself has froze quite a few times which seems to be a quite common problem. I've had to unplug the power and put it back on to restart it more times than is imaginable. My son is used to it now though and it normally starts back where he was in the game at the checkpoint. For the money its cost this shouldnt happen.I've played this with my son many times as the 2nd player (using pro controller) and it is addictive and fun so can see why he likes it.

This game may simply be a cynical way for Lego to sell lots of sightly expensive Character and Level packs ... but it sure is fun, so sign me up!As a game, it plays as a straight up Lego Videogame affair. What totally sets it apart is the range and spread of the content within. Want Batman fighting Lord Business in Springfield Nuclear power plant? Got it. Want Gandalf following the yellow brick road and taking on the Wicked Witch of the West? Yup. Got expansion packs? Marty McFly getting put down by Portal's Glados. Done it.My 8 Year old son and I are heading through the game right now. We both love Lego and video games (esp. Portal!) and its a great bonding experience for us.Building real world Lego gadgets and cars as we go along in the game is inspired. We've already picked up several level packs, and got our eyes on a few upcoming character "fun" packs! We really appreciate the 2 Player mode on Wii U allowing one player to use the Wii U controller, whilst the other uses the main TV; its a nice touch for the Wii U. My only wish would be there was more construction/creative side of things a-la the Disney Infinity "Toybox" mode, which my Son has had plenty of fun with before, but its only a small complaint.

Bought this on the Wii U after seeing my nephew play it on XBox One. If you have an XBox One it's probably a better platform, but grabbing a second hand Wii U meant I could also play Breath of the Wild and other games, plus it's thirty quid cheaper. The Wii U version is decent, but does install a large (6GB) patch, so if you have an 8GB U you'll need an external hard drive. Performance has almost always been fine. There have been reports of the U version being buggy - it's been ok other than a couple of places, annoyingly one early on when moving between areas in the Wicked Witch's castle. To get around this I removed all other characters except Gandalf (necessary to open the door),and put them back on once successfully through. The only other issue so far has been right at the end of the Portal 2 level pack, again resolved by removing all but essential characters.Children are fine with the game (with a little help when they're young), and it's fun for adults too, if you choose your adventure worlds carefully. The only real complaint is that now the product is discontinued, it's cheap to pick up some sets, but somewhat expensive for other ones.

Great set. If purchasing for xmas or birthday I highly recommend getting disc loaded onto your console system in advance. We bought as an early joint - treat for our children but there was a 56 minute wait for it to upload an update specific to the game, then a further 10 minutes or so before we actually able to get the disc fired up to start. Luckily some of that time was spent building the portal and figures but still had unhappy children in meantime! Long initial intro into the story of how the 3 characters have ended up where they are, as result of this they only had a few minutes play to get used to control etc before we had to turn it off.Portal is pretty cool - the base lights up and changes colour (similar to the colour changes of fibre optic type items). We look forward to getting expansion packs to further enhance game play.Downside is it is very expensive for what it is - I bought on a very good amazon deals offer and would've been very disappointed to pay full price. That said, with lego mad fans in the house I can see it bringing lots of enjoyment as they love the other lego games we own on the ps3.

Very similar to Skylanders and the like but this has taking a non stop hammering off the kids since Christmas.I would recommend building your Lego set first away from the game as it does take a good half hour or so to get up and running and although you start the game it stops you after five minutes to start building everything including the portal which my kids got frustrated with which is probably why I would say build first...game later.Although you can expand sets to add to the starter pack these are not essential to completing the game but sets do come in at about twenty pounds plus so overall costs can run up very quickly if you want to keep adding to it....In terms of gameplay there isa simple interface which my 7 year old can easily manage and like previous Lego games are really fun to play. Can be played with two players on the same console as a split screen option which works well.Would highly recommend and it adds a whole new twist to the Lego world....how many times do you get Gandalf and Batman running missions together, nevermind in a Wizard of Oz setting ?

In terms of gameplay this is pretty much the same as every other Lego game you've played. Simple puzzles with a bit of smashing, jumping and pulling depending on the capabilities of your selected character. What this game is really about is mashups of of franchises and watching out for in-jokes as the various mismatched characters bicker. I was worried that most of this would be lost on my daughter who has no idea who Gandalf, Chell, Mr Stay Puft, Doc Brown or many other characters actually are. But she knows Batman and the Wizard of Oz so she happily giggled her way through the first couple of worlds we played. The Wii U version has a nice trick in two-player mode that each player gets theirown screen courtesy of the game pad so you don't have a problem if you go off in different directions. Only on boss fights are both characters pinned to the same area.I especially liked the way the Simpsons world is cell-shaded and starts with a sofa gag.

Ok I caved... I had to buy this despite it being a money spinner! But at least you get some lego builds out of it!The game itself is good fun. I didnt realise you still get to play levels like Dr Who without buying the add-ons so that was a pleasant surprise. My 4 year old loves it too - and its not as frustrating as I thought it would be watching her playing it!!The only downside for me with this game is the requirement to update a couple of times a month. And its 15GB updates! Not just patches! This means you go to play the game and end up not being able to for at least an hour whilst it downloads (depending on how good your broadband is!). It may also use up your entire allowance in one go!No way to carry on playing without updating either which imo is a bad thing! Should give you that option if you are not in a new area or somewhere which needs an update!Other than that its excellent fun!

Now I'm 40+ gamer especially Lego games, so far I'm loving it. Like all Lego games it is a platform to which you have a number of elements to complete. I'm just getting into the game, building the models as and when required. Only criticism I have (this might be me) but check points to save the game seem to be far between. I like the idea you can bring other characters into the game as and when required. However I haven't found any of the ones I have available within the game. But again that could be not finding them as yet. I do think you need an awful lot of studs to get true adventurer. Throughout the game like other Lego games you can buy other figures within the level you are playing.Good game so far for young and old.By realising level packs in intervals this is a good idea as it keeps you interest in the game.Happy gaming

Okay - so this has all of the makings of a 5 star game... No.2 son (age 8) and I set this up this evening, having to build the portal and the Batmobile added to the fun and the on screen instructions are easy enough to follow. The game play looks good, and promises to be at least as engaging as the previous Lego games, so if you liked them as much as we did you'll be onto a winner. Why not 5 stars? Well for the cost, and this is an expensive game, with expensive add-ons, I'm hoping that its going to take some time to complete. We finished Skylanders Superchargers last night (do the math), on Nightmare mode, and although the game is still fun to play, once the main quest is done the game loses a certain something.I am hoping we are still trying to complete Lego Dimensions by Christmas, if so I'll come back and give it 5 stars.
