I'm a huge fan of role playing games and had been keeping an eye on Lords of the Fallen a long time before it's release. Claiming Dark Souls as it's influences and demo videos really focusing on strategic combat it looked fantastic but I passed on it at launch due to technical issues but with patches released resolving a lot of the problems I finally tried it and i'm glad I did as it's a fantastic action RPG.In Lords of the Fallen you play the role of Harkyn, a prisoner having been released to help humans fight off an attack of monsters called Rhogar led by former god Adyr. The story is easily Lord of the Fallens weakest aspect with things only being explained as time goes on leaving people in the dark a bit at first. The thing that hurts it most is the poor voice acting from everyone from Harkyn right done to a sidequest NPC, it's hammy and phoned in, a real shame.Gameplay sees Harkyn exploring around a Citadel/Monastery where the human leader Antanas is holed up as well as in the Rhogar realm, both of which are full of enemies. Combat is excellent, you get a huge variety of weapons and armour sets to find and swap between as you choose, certain weapons are sometimes better against some enemies than others due to elemental attriubutes or attack speeds. There are no shops, though you can craft runes to equipment to adjust their stats though it's limited in scope. When attacking, if you hack in without a plan you will die. The key to almost every encounter is to take your time looking for a gap to attack and make sure to use your shield, dodge and make sure to manage your stamina bar which drains with each action.Quite a few of the normal enemies can be a challenge at times but the Lords (boss fights essentially) are definitely tougher and have some great designs, often requiring different strategies or weapons to get past them, I looked forward to each boss encounter. At the start of the game you get to choose between three classes, Cleric, Warrior and Rogue. They only actually effect two things, your starting stats (which can be sculpted towards whichever you want when you level up anyway) and magic. Each class has four spells that do various things though they are slightly similar for each class like a decoy, buff, attack etc. I'm a little torn by the magic, a lot of the spells aren't that powerful and they take a long time to cast which, especially in boss fights is more dangerous than rewarding so not worth the effort. Could have done with much more variety, I only used one spell on my first play through as the Cleric because it healed me.Visually for a fairly low budget game Lords of the Fallen is actually a lovely looking game. Artistically it's great with fantastic building architecture, statues, towers etc. I really liked the level designs as well as the multiple paths and secret areas. The character models though are another matter. Harkyn looks great, thanks to the armour design as do the enemy models but the non player characters he meets on his journey are ugly. Their hair looks almost like playstation to visuals in solid lumps, their faces are bland and emotionless and the lip synching, well it's like they just guessed. It's not the biggest game in the world, I clocked in at about 22 hours and that was with a good amount of exploring around for secret areas but I found that to be a fairly decent size and a lot of fun.If you like role playing games, especially the Souls series then this little gem could be right up your street. It's not perfect but with fun combat, plenty of equipment to find and some great boss encounters it's totally worth a look in. A sequel has already been announced in development, I will be getting that straight away this time, hopefully it's slightly bigger and refined.Recommended.+ Tactical combat.+ Cool bosses.+ Nice variety of weapons and armour.+ Lovely visuals, especially the environment design.- Poor voice acting.- Magic is so so.- NPC character models are seriously ugly.

STORY:Harkyn, a convicted criminal, is released from prison to save the world from a dark god and his army. Standard fantasy trope but very enjoyable nonetheless. Throughout the story you will make decisions, form alliances and exact revenge on the demons of Rhogar.GAMEPLAY:Lords of the Fallen takes a slow and realistic approach to combat. Weapons feel weighty as you swing at your foes with an assortment of swords, staffs, axes, war-hammers and many more between. Combat is focused on one or two enemies at a time, as opposed to overwhelming you with multiple enemies, making each encounter feel like a dual between two able warriors (or one able warrior and a bloodthirsty demon). The boss battles are epic encounters with multiple tactics and stages of combat, also an excellent musical score usually accompanies each one. The controls feel tight and responsive and its refreshing to play a hack and slash game with a slow methodical pace as opposed to the quick instant gratification of some other titles in the genre. I would say that the difficulty is very balanced, its by no means easy but presents a nice challenge to the thoughtful, methodical player. All in all, very enjoyable.GRAPHICS:Very impressive and in some places stunning! Snow capped castles, billowing smoke and fire, and look at those lighting and shadow effects. The world is a joy to explore, the crumbling claustrophobic corridors give was to large expanses which seem to push the PS4 to near limit all whilst retaining crisp detail and a solid frame rate. Some people did not like the Diablo style "chunky shoulders" and "spikes upon spikes" art style but in my opinion, it fits the story and style perfectly. It all fits onto the realm of dark fantasy, an aspect this game does excellently, right the way down to the ambiance and atmosphere. Quite often I found myself gazing at the environment and trying to soak it all in!CONCLUSION:If you enjoy other games in the genre (I've avoided any references to THAT game series because this game isn't part of THAT game series, it should be taken as a stand alone game) or any dark fantasy game at all, than you'll enjoy Lords of the Fallen. Its not everyone's cup of tea, but once you 'get it', there's a lot to explore and enjoy! In this gamer's opinion its one of the best games of 2014.

Initially I was aware of the frame rate and lip syncing issues (neither of which were that big a concern), but I let the sizeable patch install itself and re-started the game and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. One of the best games I've played in a while. The combat is all about timing and risk taking - lack concentration for a moment and huge chunks of your life will rapidly disappear - the controls feel weighty and responsive, and at times it provides a good challenge. Quite early in the game you collect a multitude of various weapons to play with. It's certainly not easy but neither is it the punishing endurance that Dark Souls was.Speaking of which, yes, it borrows a little from Dark Souls, sure. But it does it with enough style and grace to get away with it. It's also full of wonderful atmosphere and great scenery. My one little gripe? The voice acting and character movements during the cut scenes can be a bit clumsy and contrived. But that's all.COD Advanced Warfare is out tomorrow. But sometimes you want to do something other than just stare down the barrel of a gun all the time whilst being shouted at endlessly. And Lords of the Fallen provides a superb alternative. A hugely entertaining and very enjoyable game.

Ok. My last review was a 2 star labelled tedious. I have since completed the game and against my previous intentions of immediatly trading it i seem to have started it all over. Make no mistake. You will probably hate this game the first time round. The first boss battle is at the start. Literally. Upgrades come with repetative effort and your charectors reactions are like treacle compared to your enemies. The second time of playing you know the tricks and layouts ( no map another annoyance) and actually get to enjoy it! Lords of the fallen and enjoyment in the same sentence! Bizarre. Yes. It is heavily inspired by dead souls but not quite as ruthless.I only completed it through sheer bloody mindedness but have have gone back for more. Graphics are good with lots of charector detail. Sound is good too. Lots of ringing of weapons on armour. As i say, youll probably hate it about 10 minutes in, but it kinda grows on you in a weird masochistic way...

ive had this game for over a few months now and occasionally stream gameplay on twitch TV. The enemies in this game are varied, their attacks can be relentless (especially the bosses), the range of enemies to fight and the methods as to how some of them are killed are obscure yet obvious and the detail put into the fight mechanics and the actual game itself are pleasing. If you are a dark souls and demons souls fan then this game is for you as it mirrors the challenges and painstaking fustration as each enemy and boss stabs you, slices you and sends you on your merry way to deaths doorstep masking you question your sanity! My only problems with this game is the lack of variation in weaponry. The types of weaponry are many and and prosperous. But the variety of weapons for the sections are questionable as each has very little, especially the class, daggers and great hammers. Still this does not take away from the game and it is still enjoyable!

The game has problems, that's for sure , but I personally can work around it.I'm having fun with it all, combat is good once you learn all of the little tricks and graphics are pretty good, I wouldn't say amazing but good. It keeps you keep coming back even past the frustration it just makes you play more. The designs of enemy's and environments are really good , it has the whole over the top fantasy armour with big beasty shoulder pads etc, but I love that stuff and your character always looks really cool unlike some other RPGs.My main gripe with the game is the boss battles, I can get past glitches most of the time and I can let them pass, but the bosses can be beyond frustrating ,dieing over and over again and it doesn't seem to be fair, it's very possible I just suck however I think some of the bosses are beyond frustrating . Overall I'm enjoying it.If you get frustrauted easy then I would reccomend steering away from this.

I see a lot of people comparing this to the dark souls series which is a fair but let's not forget that lords of the fallen is it own franchise/game. I got the game on day one and managed to play a couple of hours. I am very impressed graphics are great, plays smooth and the combat is just brilliant. This game is defiently worth a shot it hard but not overly hard that you find yourself throwing the controller at the TV. I would of gave the game a 5 star but I can't get over the voice acting not being in synch with the character animations, yes it only a little thing but it annoying!! Anyways defo worth the asking price. Great game.

(Souls player) First impression wasn't good, strange controls and etc., but once I understood controls and combat I really enjoyed it. Finished game with Cleric in around 20 hrs, easy class to begin with - heavy weapons, shields and good spells. Now will try a bit more challenging Rogue - more dodging and stuff. Graphics are really nice - didn't notice screen-tearing or fps drops as some mentioned. Armor, monsters and bosses look really good. It's not as hard as Souls games, but I don't mind, since I am not hardcore player and there's no multiplayer so no one can help me with the bosses.

Overall 'Lords of the Fallen' reminds me of 'Darksiders' meets 'Dark Souls'.I thought the game was fun. The storyline was cool enough, the weapons and gear looked great, there's lots to explore in each area, and the gameplay mechanics were reliable. However I was rarely challenged in this game, it was far too easy.I recommend not leveling up as much as you *think* you should. I also thought that there wasn't much variety in the sceneries, it made the game feel more repetitive than it should. If they could patch the game to be more challenging it would be a great improvement.

if you like the Dark Souls series this game is for you its different to dark souls in the fact it is more story/action driven however, the combat is the same idea.if you are new to the Genre this game can be quite challenging and difficult however i believe thats what makes the game so great.lastly compared to dark souls i think the graphics are excellent and the game is priced much better than most of other next gen titles at £40-£50 which are too expensive in my opinion and lack content and play ability however lords of the fallen didn't disappoint

26.7.2017

Pretty decent game. Taken clear inspiration from the Dark Souls series, where it adopts a similar combat style. Impressive world with a very pleasing Gothic style, great character design as you will face many unique and interesting demons and monsters. However the story could have been developed better and the your character seems very slow and clumsy, so maybe avoid if you prefer more fast paced games.Overall very satisfying and unique experience to provide a nice break from Dark Souls.

19.11.2014

I really enjoyed this game. It's not too difficult but it's challenging enough to have fun with it. People who say that the gameplay is too slow clearly don't understand that there are 3 weight categories. If you're slow, it was your choice of armor. You can choose heavy, medium or light. Light is really fast with no delays. So stop moaning if you didn't spend enough time learning the mechanics.

8.11.2014

Great game, very enjoyable so far and none of the performance problems/screen tearing that people mentioned. Rating it 4/5 simply because it has no mutliplayer BUT don't let that put you off; I'm a huge Souls game fan and if you like those games you'll most likely enjoy this. The devs are also working on patching some issues but I've not encountered anything game-breaking so far.

I love this game.If you like "GOD OF WAR" you'll love this 1. Getting through stage 1 had my sponge brick out and yelling blue murder at the TV, much to the amusement of my husband, cheeky man, he got sponge bricked too.I promise you you'll totally love this hours, days and weeks of fun to be had. But don't forget the sponge brick for frustrating times too.

25.1.2015

Brilliant , plenty to kill good easy controls , great graphics and better than dark souls which iv completed both and found to be good but very annoying. I don't want to keep beating the same enemies again and again with no save point that to me was just frustrating but lotf was hard without being annoying. Really enjoyed it and hope these a 2nd.
