As title says, it's pretty much like any other portable hard drive. Being LaCie, the internal drive is a Seagate one (they own the LaCie company). Works as expected.Hardware...- Speed: ~140 read/write. (see Blackmagic Disk Speed Test result image I've added).Tested fresh-out-the-box/empty, formatted as it arrives (ExFAT), AND again after using the included Toolkit app (see more info below) to reformat into HFS+.The included Toolkit app advises Mac users they'll get better speed if HFS+formatted, but TBH I saw no difference before and after. (remember that later-on, as HDDs fill, they can slow down, especially with only ~20% of drive space left on them. So you may get slower speeds on all HDDs later,as you fill them up).- Noise: Quiet, like most portable HDDs.- Heat: Not hot, just warm, pretty much like most portable HDDs.- Cables: You get two separate black ones, each 50cm (20-inch), one is USB-C-to-USB-C, one is USB-C-to-USB-A. Interestingly they both have the "USB SS 10" logo on them, implying they work at gen.2 10Gbps speed rather then the 5Gbps speed of gen.1 (but in reality, this means nothing, as these spinning HDDs never get anywhere ~1 GByte/s you'd get on a high-end SSD or a large disk RAID array! So ignore it.)For comparison, WD's newest portables typically give you a single USB-C-to-USB-C cable, with an additional USB-C-to-USB-A adapter "head" in the box (which, strangely, isn't supposed to be possible under USB-IF guidelines, only the other way around A-into-C. So that's weird, lol!).- Format: Comes in ExFAT (suitable for Win and Mac). Though the "Toolkit" software will advise Mac users to reformat into HFS+ (not APFS format; because AFAIK, externally connected drives are not recommended to use it yet, and/or offer little advantage for externally connected HDD's anyway.)- Volume size: At 5TB, this is currently the largest size generally available of portable HDD, so is very decent if you need 5TBs (WD only offer 4TB max, at time of writing), and especially given portable SSD's typically stop at 2TB for around 1.5 times the price of this, obviously giving you good storage size value at the loss of SSD-type speeds.- Design: This is really where this one is a winner, IMO. If you care a bit about things having a pleasing aesthetic while you are using them, then this just may be for you. I like the way LaCie here have done the interesting diamond cut design on both the edges and corners. And being metal, similar to Apple's stuff (hence their Space Grey exclusive colour!), it has a quality feel.I bought the Space Grey 5TB version, the other colour being obviously silver (Moon Silver to be precise) to match Apple's aesthetics, but there are ones in TB sizes 1/2/4/5 to fit ones need (although the 1TB model is only available in the silver not grey).- Warranty: 2-year limited hardware warranty.Software/services included...- "Toolkit": Syncs files between mirrored folders on your computer and portable drives.- "Seagate Rescue plan": AFAICT, you don't get even 1yr included, instead they are offering this as upgrade options (10 USD/2yrs or 15 USD/3yrs), quote:'Purchase to gain peace of mind knowing your files are protected even when a device fails. In the event of a drive crash, virus or failure your data can be retrieved at no extra cost!'- Adobe Creative Cloud, All Apps: You get 1 month subscription free of Adobe's "All Apps" plan level, for you to trial as many as you want within the month. When setting up the drive, it'll walk you through getting it and you'll need to give them your card info in order to do so -- you may want to unsubscribe straight away, if you think you will forget to do so a month later! (AFAIU, current CC users may be able to add the month to an existing plan?).So that's it really. Now go and buy one!(NB: I'll likely add a comment with additional info I find, so remember to check the comments section. ;-)

In addition to cloud-based systems, for ease of mind all computers need a local physical back-up solution. Over the past years, my LaCie external drives have proven to be invaluable when I have had problems with my MacBook after faulty OS upgrades, logic board failures or even file deletions made in error. The ideal capacity of a back-up drive is 2 – 3 x the amount of data stored on the device. This 1 TB drive is fine for my 2017 MacBook Pro, which currently uses around 70% of its 512 GB hard drive.A back-up drive needs to be as portable as the device it is backing up otherwise it will not be used daily. This compact drive has a “stealth” appearance with diamond shapes at each edge. This design works well and is just as pleasing as the Porsche Design that I have on my other LaCie drive. The matt Moon Silver finish is a good match for my Silver MacBook. I was pleased to see that a Space Grey colour option is also available.I connected the drive to my MacBook and selected it an additional backup via Time Machine. I first encrypted the drive using a strong password. The drive then started backing up the 370.89 GB of data on my MacBook Pro. The drive has a conventional hard drive, with a data transfer rate of up to 130 MB/s. To perform the initial backup, you do have to leave this running overnight.I did so and found that my initial data back up was complete. Since then, over the past 2 weeks, I have used it for incremental backups. It has worked flawlessly, connecting to the Mac quickly and unobstrusively in the background. It has also disconnected promptly each time I have pressed the Eject button in Finder so I could take my MacBook Pro to work.

After a lot of research I went for this 4Tb portable drive and so far have been very pleased. I am using it on a Mac and the supplied software on the disc reformatted it without me having to search for disk utilities and decide on options there. I've transferred over a terabyte of data to it in one go already and it took that in its stride without getting hot and bothered. It works well either plugged directly into the usb port on my mac or into a usb port on the back of my My Book duo HD, which i was impressed by. In mirroring files between these two drives i am getting transfer rates of around 64 Mb/sec on average - this is on usb2 though, so i suspect it will be quicker on USB3 and usb-c.Indeed, it's great that the core connector on this drive is a fast usb-c, so when i upgrade to a newer mac then its ready for the faster connection. Also its great that the drive comes with both Usb-c/Usb-c and Usb-c/US2-3 cables, so you can use it with anything. The drive is near silent, goes to sleep and wakes up promptly, looks robust (indeed it really is pretty robust the delivery guy managed to drop the package containing it from a 3m height trying to balance it on my gatepost while 'social distancing' - but it survived and lives to tell the tale- phew!)So I can recommend, very pleased indeed.

In these days of SSDs, an external hard drive seems a little dated. However, they are good value for money and perform the same function, albeit a little more slowly.Top marks for aesthetics; this drive looks very smart. It is slim, and quiet in operation. I've used it in association with my elderly W10 PC connected by USB3. Performance is fine, especially when you're using it as a background backup device. Doubtless it will be much faster under USB-C and more suited to large volume file transfer. The drive is provided with a useful toolkit that will enable you to sychronise your PC for backup purposes. I found this very simple to configure. However the device can be used as an attached drive with your own preferred backup utility. The 1TB version which I have isn't massively cheaper than an SSD of the same volume, and I think that if this is the volume of storage I required, I'd be tempted to spend that bit more. However, the higher capacity drives offer much better value and might also provide greater reassurance of data integrity.

Drive itself looks superb (2TB model). However, and this is a first in all my many Amazon orders, it was a repaired drive! No branded packaging and a Seagate repair sticker on the back. With a hard drive a mission critical device, I expect it to be brand new unless specified in the description, which it certainly wasn't. So returned and buying the same drive again, hoping for a new one! My previous (1TB) LaCie has like all their drives been very reliable. Will update this review as things proceed...Update - As usual, Amazon great and refunded. Bought another one from Apple Store I happened to be in, and whilst I think it looks superb (very CyberTruck!) and is well made, it's not that fast,so although ideal for TimeMachine backups and such, it's not suitable as a data transfer or content storage drive (video, photos etc). Way better to get a Samsung T5 SSD that we use for such tasks that although a lot more money, is of course solid state, 4 times as fast and very reliable.

Use this drive with my iPad Pro 12.9" and my Macbook 2018 which both support USB-C to Backup and shuttle files around. I can plug the disk into my iPad Pro or Mac and I've got access to all my movies and files. Not very snappy, but I don't want my stuff scattered across a bunch of smaller external hard drives which can make finding things a pain, so the shear size of the storage to me outweighs the fact it's not SSD speeds like my iPad Pro & Macbook Pro storage. No external power supply required: works exclusively off of just the USB-C cable for both power and data. A bargain for a disk this size. BTW, it's form factor is really small- not like those other external hard drives that require a power supply. This one is truly portable. Totally recommend it for a great, chunky GP (General Purpose) external storage supply

LaCie's mobile drive comes in a variety of sizes at very reasonable prices. This 1TB version is great value at £70, coming in a very slimline, elegant silver casing that can stand upright as well as flat, complementing a MacBook very well.Using it with USB 2.0, it's quite fast, but it comes into its own when using USB-C, as the speed ramps up - they estimate 5GB a second as the 'maximum theoretical bus speed', which is one of the faster USB 3.0 compatible drives, although this isn't solid state - so it's not as fast as it would be if it was the solid state model, however, the SSD 1TB is over double the price at around £200.Overall, this is a fast, great value portable hard drive, which looks and feels sturdy and beautifully portable. Recommended!

This is a quality portable drive solution, from a quality manufacturer. The unit itself is very slim and stylish brushed metal and comes with two cables, once for USB-C/Thunderbolt ports and the other for a traditional USB3 port. Really handy considering we're still in the hinterland between one connectivity solution and another. In use the device was instantly recognised by my Windows 10 PC and I was able to drag and drop files straight away with no further software or driver installation required. Speeds are good at USB3 levels but even better with USB-C where I was able to move around really large files in no time at all.I can recommend this hard drive to you therefore, unreservedly!

I purchased this drive to handle my whole system back-up. I have a iMac and run Time Machine to operate the backup. It has only been running for around 3 weeks and today it is working fine.Time Machine also is a great app that allows you to see what is backed up and to gain access to your saved files on a day-by-day basis.Installing the LaCie drive was just a matter of plug and play. I agree with the recommendation that it works well with a iMac and I assume that same is true for all other Apple products.

I can’t tell you how many devices I searched and searched for. Everyone of them for Mac involved some kind of stupid formatting! This right here is a literal plug in and off you go! No formatting, no mess and the transfer of files is super quick!Totally affordable and beautiful in design. See pic.And it’s tiny! Expected a block and its the size of a dairy milk pack. Perfect!Came with 2 cables. Usb 3 to usb 3 and for us who haven’t caught up yet Usb 3 to Usb 2 - that’s your normal duck mouth.

A hint. If you use the LaCie 5 TB Mobile Drive on a Windows computer using the supplied USB3 connector you can use the disk straight out of the box. Transfer speeds will be about 24 Mb/s. However if you use the supplied LaCie toolkit and let it optimise your disk for Windows transfer speed will increase to c. 125 Mb/s. Takes a second. Remember to save any files you've already stored on the LaCie before you do this as they will be deleted. Highly recommended.

As a professional illustrator I decided I needed to be a bit more organised with backing up a large collection of files on my Mac, previously I'd been dragging my newer files onto an external HD when I remembered. I bought this to use with Time Machine and it's worked perfectly so far, it's tiny so takes up minimal desk space and the price seemed very reasonable for 2tb.

Bought this as I was having problems finding one that would work with my iMac running OS Catalina. This was fiddly to set up and get working properly but that may have just been our lack of knowledge on such things, however it is now in place and working well just as it should as an external back up device. Working along side my Time Machine. Would recommend this unit.

I've had a bunch of Lacie drives in the past and, it's true, they aren't desperately cheap. However, they have all seemed to use decent drives which live up to all claims about r/w speeds. More importantly though, they are solid, which is pretty important for a portable drive and they do look nice. This is a really thin 1tb drive.Really happy with it.Recommended.

The most stylish external disk! Goes hand in hand with your MacBook! Great speeds! Worth it the extra price for getting such a premium metal disk rather the other cheaper plastic ones... Works as expected out of the box. Also I like you get 2 cable 2 USB cables, a USB C to USB C and a USB C to USB A. Important that they use USB C port and not the legacy USB Micro B.
