This is a review of the "WDBFKT0040BGY-WESN" model of the "My Passport Ultra" 4 TB in the black/grey colour.I bought this portable HDD as it was on special offer (not from Amazon this time!) and I needed a second drive to use as an offsite backup and to keep data with me when working from home. On offer, it was cheaper than the non-Ultra version that I have bought and used previously. I couldn't find much difference in specs between the Ultra and standard versions, except the design of the case and apparently the Ultra comes with some sort of extra software plugin to download photos etc. direct from your social media accounts. I bought it only because it was cheaper than teh standard version at the time.Visual design:Firstly,to be clear, the case is "metallic" (i.e. a shiny gloss metallic painted finish) and NOT metal (it is plastic!). I think the WD website and description is a bit misleading there. The design itself you'll either love or hate, but the big problem with the metallic finish is that it picks up greasy finger prints really easily so is a pain to keep clean. I have the standard version too in the funky orange colour, and that has no problems with finger prints. So I would go for the standard version which comes in a choice of bright colours. I guess this does look a bit cooler / more stylish / ,more expensive / more professional though. In Use:Works great, pretty fast, no problems for me with connection. Comes with the various WD software and utilities saved on the drive itself, so easy to install and setup. For backup, I prefer to use "Allways Sync" as I trust it with making an exact copy of my data with fuss. I like the WD security software. Set as password to encrypt the drive and all its contents, so your data is safe if lost. The finder can still wipe the drive and use it, but they can't get to your data. Similarly, if you forget the password, then apparently not even WD can restore your data. You can set the drive to auto unlock on your main computers so just plug it in and go. On other computers, a drive icon appears when you plugin the drive for the first time. You click this to open a little app to enter the password, then the main drive appears in file manager. So the drive contents are completely hidden until the correct password is entered. Seems to work well for me.Summary:Great drive, works well, fast and straightforward to use. However, don't pay extra for the Ultra version (unless you really want the extra software included for downloading from social media) or you really like the design. Remember the case is "metallic" finished and NOT METAL. The standard version is usually cheaper, same spec's and performance, and the case stays clean. The finger print issue on the Ultra version makes it look very grubby very soon!Rating of four stars, one star deducted for higher price (than standard version) and grubby finger marks issue.Cases:If you buy the 4Tb version, note that it is much thicker then the smaller capacities and it is hard to find a protective case to fit. On Amazon, most cases that say they fit the WD Passport drives are only talking about the smaller size units, not the fat 4Tb one.

I have an original 500GB PS4 which I was intending to upgrade to a PS4 pro until I heard rumours about a PS5 milling around. The last rumour I heard was it was a 2020 speculated release. With it being the latter half of 2018 at time of writing I didn't see the point in buying another PS4. It's a lot of money for an arguably short amount of time (potentially).I was however annoyed with having only 5 of the 20 odd games I bought on the HDD at any one time. It was frustrating if a friend wanted to play a game I didn't have on the console at the time. Plus in one of the Sony Sales I bought a couple of digital games. Though lazy I have found digital games so much more accessible as I just drop one for the other in seconds without moving (a 1st world entitlement issue for sure)So I decided that going forward I would buy Digital only games, they are more expensive new, but cheap in sales, so much easier to play with a 2 second attention span like mine.So with the setup story out of the way, I researched all around the place and found 4 reviews I trusted online of which they all advised NOT to get a solid state drive or SSD as they are more expensive for less space and the PS4 has an internal Bus speed limitation, which essentially leads to a fast drive being slowed to USB speeds any way. So of the large space HDD this was either in top place or second across the 4 reviews. Placing top 2 4 times seemed like a good sign.Bought it, plugged it in, formatted it to PS4 file system (must do this in order to use it as extended storage) and transferred all my games to the drive. It all worked out fine, the transfer was slow but when you are transferring 500GB and then installing another 1000GB from other games it will take a while.Had 0 issues so far, games load in good time, I don't have any issues in game with speeds, frame rates or anything. I wouldn't notice the difference between the external and the internal drive. The key thing is I have the space to have my entire collection of games on there, including all my PS+ free games, plus demos and such and I still have a tonne of room.If the PS5 (is any good) supports HDD expansion in the same way the PS4 does then I can either wipe all the PS4 games off (if they are not compatible with the PS5) or keep them and swap it between consoles (assuming they use the same file system) Either way I am sure my HDD will be useful for years to come either on my PS4 or any future console I purchase (as this will work with Microsoft's products) or if worse comes to worse I can re-format in a FAT file system and use it as storage for my computer files.I'm a fan of WD products and this drive is brilliant so far, it's doing the job I bought it for incredibly well and I am enjoying bouncing from game to game as I get bored of one, moving on to the other.

I've owned many external hard drives over the years and have always gone for Western Digital branded drives both for internal and external use as I have never yet seen one fail. The My Passport 1TB drive is no exception and is as simple as they come. I don't use any of the included software or features, instead reformatting the drive usually to HFS+ (Mac OS Extended). Contrary to what the manufacturer would like you to believe there is no need to purchase the Mac specific drives, as the cheaper PC variants can be easily reformatted using disk utility and can then be used for time machine backup or simple plug and play storage. In use the drive is quiet, cool and fast. My only gripe, and the reason for the loss of a star, concerns the USB 3.0 connector. The socket feels incredibly flimsy and flexes when a cable is inserted. Though this is a universal plug and not great by design, other products do feature better quality connectors than this which offer a more pleasing fit and a better impression of longevity. If I were using one of these drives on the go, I would take care to avoid putting any pressure on the connector, or plugging / unplugging it excessively to avoid damage as once broken it would be very difficult to repair.Despite this I still wouldn't hesitate to recommend this and other Western Digital drives. For performance, reliability and value for money they simply can't be beaten. No other manufacturer has achieved such a high reliability rate in my own personal experience, with competing drives from Seagate failing in well under a year and effectively becoming expensive paperweights, as they contained sensitive data and couldn't be returned. The My Passport drives have a proven track record that in my opinion is well deserved. As an update to this review, I recently purchased the 4TB drives to replace some Seagate Expansions drives which were beginning to fail. The larger drives are physically similar albeit slightly taller, but perform as well. I also took the opportunity to try the included software. Includes is a simple yet well thought out backup solution for Windows that should be fine for most needs. You also get WD's drive utilities, which is a small program for both Mac and Windows that allows you to run various diagnostics and health checks on the drives as well as configure the sleep timer and disable the drive's LED. The WD discovery app brings everything together in one place, and also provides a very convenient way to register the drives with WD to be eligible for the 3 year warranty.

I'm very pleased with this hard drive.I've never had a Western Digital portable before; it compares very favourably with my Samsung M3 Portable which I've had for a year now and has rapidly been filling up, so having this WD available provides that extra flexibility and peace of mind knowing that I have everything important backed up on external drives should the worst happen. The WD comes with its own backup and security software, though it isn't necessary to install and use this – I haven't as I already have software in place for the job and it is working to my satisfaction. Although the box says a quick start leaflet is included, there is no real information on it – only the website where one can access the user manual; this will instruct you to put the computer on then plug the drive in – your computer will then automatically identify the new hardware and you're good to go – a copy of the user manual is included on the drive along with Mac-specific software, which I can't comment on as I only have a PC.The drive draws its power from the computer through it's USB connection and is 2.0/3.0 compatible; on copying large batches of folders and files the speed rates were pretty fast (I have USB 3.0) and it really didn't take me long to duplicate a good deal of material from my existing drives to the new drive.Physically, the portable is very similar in size to my Samsung, though more solidly rectangular in design; the raised pattern moulding on one half of the hard plastic casing makes it easy enough to grip and it will fit in a pocket or bag easily enough; in use it sits where it is put - nice and stable – so it's eminently suitable for laptop use.In summation; this is an easy to use portable offering a good deal of storage and with a backup facility should you need to install it; PC/Mac compatible and with a satisfactorily fast transfer rate on a current computer.A pretty decent drive all in; I've had it running for a couple of weeks now with no problems – I reckon it's a good buy.

Years ago, I bought an Iomega StorCenter Home Media Server.Iomega was bought out by Lenovo whom only offered limited support for Iomega products. I updated it a few years ago and since its never been able to connect over the Wifi, only by ethernet cable. Then recently the Server started making hard drive failure sounds. It had all of my downloaded TV series and films on. So I decided it was time to update.Instead of opting for another media server, I went for a WD My Passport (Yellow) 4TB (photoed above and below). Here’s the My Passport features:* It’s Plug and Play, meaning that it doesn’t require its own power source but is instead powered through USB.* It’s portable.* It is made by Western Digital (WD)whom have an excellent reputation for making high quality hardware products.* It comes in various hard drive sizes: 1TB, 2TB, 3TB & 4TB.* It has a funky design.* It comes in various colours: black, white, blue, red, yellow & orange.* It runs silently.* It is relatively cheap, available on Amazon for just under a £100 for a 4TB model.* It has Built-in 256-bit AES Hardware Encryption meaning that you can set it so that a password is required for access. * This feature cleverly allows someone to use the drive on any computer – even one that doesn’t have the WD software installed and without having to install any software.* Auto Backup software is installed. Or you can use other software for backups including Apple’s Time Machine.I decided because my new drive is portable that I wanted a solid case to protect it when not in use. I found this AmazonBasics Case: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003LSTD38/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&psc=1&linkCode=ll1&tag=antonysicom-21&linkId=94b70fe2f3063bce1cbd058c27370073&language=en_GBIf you’re looking for an external and portable hard drive to give yourself more disk space on your laptop or PC, I can highly recommend the WD My Passport (Yellow) 4TB on Amazon.Review soon,Antony

Portable hard drives are a very useful addition to a laptop and even more so for the ultra-compact portables that tend to have storage limited to 128 or 256 GB SSD. Fortunately, most have one or more USB 3.0 ports. Portable hard drives tend to have short cables - 30-45 cm is typical and a short extension cable (not included) may be useful in some situations.Whether used to store current downloads or as a temporary storage for media files to be watched, read or listened to on a journey or on holiday or for a presentation they are very useful. 4 TB is usefully large and allows considerable freedom as how their application. The enclosure feels as if it is all-plastic but is supposedly partly metal to aid cooling.Prices have fallen and this capacity is currently very affordable. The drive will be used mostly, as it has been thus far, to transfer data from the ultrabook to my PC or in the reverse direction. At other times, it will be used to store a selection of movies and/or tracks using the ultrabook as a media player. Other than case colour and capacity, it is identical in form and function to 1TB and 2TB versions also owned and frequently used. Currently, the 1TB drive is connected to a PVR to expand its storage capacity. Reliability of both older drives to date has been total and problem-free in the 2 years or so of ownership. Previously, both were used to regularly transfer data between machines and sites; the lack of a power pack was a major boon in relation to the larger 3.5-inch drives and enclosures previously used for that purpose. This is pocket-sized and light; the larger 3.5-inch units are definitely not!To prevent scratches to the finish, personal preference is to add a carry case which also ensures a degree of protection against knocks and drops.

Review of the WD 4TB My Passport (2016) model. The photographs show the previous generation (left most in all pictures) beside this new generation of drive (rightmost drive). I'm a long time user of WD passport external usb hard drives. This is the first 4TB I've bought, used for a backup of a NAS.Capacity + Speeds:This is a USB3 hard drive, giving very fast speeds. Attached are screenshots from a benchmark utility, showing 116MB/s read 107MB/s write. For comparison, the previous generation (2TB) got 112MB/s read and 100MB/s write, so a slight improvement. The formatted capacity is 3.63 TB.The enclosure/case:The case is solid. It is a bit more fancy than previous WD My Passports, and a little bigger.Yet, it remains a solid construction and has a feeling of durability. The LED light on the back is now a horizontal slot which has a softer light compared to the previous generation drives.Comparing to the previous generation, the case is ever so slightly larger, but there really isn't much in it. See the photos. I prefer the new case as it allows multiple drives to be set on top of each other, whereas the previous generation was slightly rounded so they tended to slide off each other.Included in the box / software:The drive comes with a USB3 cable. You also get the WD Drive Utilities, Encryption software and Backup software. However, after checking the drive with the WD Utilities to ensure it survived transport safely, I wiped the drive for my own use. You can always grab a copy of the software from WD's homepage in the future.Overall, this seems like a great drive. Only time will tell how reliable it is, but it does come with a 2 year warranty as standard. This can be extended by a year if you purchase WD Care.

Western Digital is a hard drive manufacturer that I have put a lot of faith in for many years, whether it is for fixed drives in a PC or external drives. I have never had a WD drive fail on me - but that does not stop me wanting to keep backups just in case.I have several external USB drives, including an old WD Elements 1TB drive. Although this Passport drive has the same capacity as my Elements drive it is physically a lot smaller and a lot more portable because it is powered from the USB cable and therefore does not need a separate AC adaptor. The looks are OK but nothing to rave about, maybe it looks better in a different colour to black, but looks are bottom of the list of what I personally want from a hard drive.I just want capacity, speed and ease of use, and I am getting all of those here, plus a bit of future-proofing because it has a USB 3.0 port on it. I don't have a USB 3.0 port on my PC so I can't take advantage of that, but perhaps my next computer will have one and then I'll be laughing.Or maybe not, because the ease of use means that the Mrs.has hijacked the drive to back up all her photos and music files. The drive comes with a standard USB cable, not a USB 3.0 cable, but it does fit in the back and everything is perfectly compatible with what I now realise is a slightly out-of-date PC. Software for doing backups, scheduling backups and encrypting data is installed on the drive, but you don't have to use it. Mrs. S is just using it as normal mass storage and is copying files manually and I tend to use some old freeware sync software that is probably not as good, but is familiar to me.Overall, I am very happy with this. Another winner from Western Digital.

Bought mine from another seller as unfortunately the Amazon delivery was taking too long and I got it a shade cheaper.Just a few early observations:- It's not the most portable drive you'll find on the market, one to put in a coat pocket, though to get 4TB on a portable drive is quite spectacular, can't really complain.- It's a quick drive, not consistent fast speeds compared to the Seagate equivalent, but you get in and around 85MBps - 110MBps transferring video files across, mine was jumping round 30MBps - 40MBps for image files, which brings me too...- Small file speeds... they are very good, something these types of external drives aren't particularly renown for. If I open a folder with images in,they load quickly, and unzipping files doesn't take an eternity either.- There's software loaded onto the drive which you can chose to install or remove. Note the WD Utilities software allows you to wipe the drive, do a disk check and toggle whether you want the drive to sleep after a certain amount of time. All in all, very happy... so why not 5 stars? Heat issues. I'll need more testing with it, but after transferring over 200GB of data to it the drive read 50 degrees on HD Sentinel. For a 5400rpm USB powered drive that's quite high IMO, the old Seagate ones with a power brick were notorious for hitting those kinds of temps, and my previously mentioned Toshiba drive rarely gets near 45 with the same data transfer. Just be wary if you do plan to use this to back up data, it will get hot quite quickly, though shouldn't be too much an issue if you're transferring the odd file here and there.

Bought this and split into 4 partitions, one for time machine (mas os sierra) to backup my macbook pro and the other partitions for other stuff. I generally do not recommend using a drive in this manner, by this i mean using it as a backup drive for important data and for other general stuff, however i do have another hard drive purely for backups. It looks good, feels good to hold although it's a fingerprint magnet and i find it quiet which is nice considering it's a mechanical hdd. I do not take mine out so cannot comment on how well it would withstand being knocked about in a back pack or something similar although one should buy a decent case if taking out anyway considering it will holdyou're data on it.I cannot comment on the software that's included as i just format and partition my hard drives and never use the included software. Bear in mind the cable is very short so some may wish to order a longer cable when purchasing and maybe a case.I've never tested the hard drive read and write speeds when i received it but it backs up my mac very quickly and copying to and from the hdd is quick enough for me so not needed to. It has a USB 3.0 port which incase you are not sure is backward compatible with USB 2.0, just remember if you only have a USB 2.0 port you will be restricted to USB 2.0 speeds.Hopefully it will last as not had the best experience with portable HDDs from various companies including WD, i don't take them out, they only get plugged in generally when backing up so they don't get used much at all, however i do recommend this portable hdd as so far it's been very good.

The price seems to have shot up at the time of me writing this review, but this was purchased at just over £37 when I got mine a few weeks ago, and for that price it's really fantastic value. It's very portable, and just a case of simply plugging it in and it's available for use with Windows 10 - no external power supply needed of course, so ideal for transporting around in my laptop bag.Of course as with any mechanical drive I would advise a little care, obviously more so that with a SSD drive - you don't want to be chucking it around whilst it's in use or your data won't be lasting too long. However I am not likely to see a SSD with this capacity anywhere near this price for some years,so this is a perfect compromise considering the price. As for reliability - well, hard disks are a a bit odd because people have their own personal experiences that colour future judgements. For obvious reasons if one brand of HD fails on you then you are unlikely to go back, and usually then denounce that brand as rubbish. All I can say is I've been using WD products for many years both at home and work, and the reliability has been up there as possibly the best of all the brands we've used. This drive is being used as an occasional backup drive for laptops etc, but I did quickly test it with my daughter's PS4 with a view to getting another and it worked fine (although sadly the price jumped up before I could get another). If you are looking for a cheap, small, plug and play, reliable drive then I don't think you can go far wrong with this.

Many don't know the WD brand name today but I do. WD is still one of the best manufacturers of Hard Disk Staorage. Before the rebranding, WD was known as "Western Digital" and sadly they weren't very good at other computer hardware and that is where they faced problems. However, when it came to Hard Disk Drives, Western Digital were one of the best known (and the most expensive). Due to WD not getting ahead in other areas and still being costly to buy, even during the last recession (credit crunch / economic crisis) they lost a lot of market share. They then rebranded and wisely reviewed their prices thus WD today are now competitively priced and still have the reputation of their reliability. So, all in all, as this portable HDD is doing as it is designed to do and is highly likely to last many, many years, I do recommend this Portable Hard Drive. It is easy to use, just "Plug and Play" with most Windows systems otherwise just follow the instructions for formatting. Remember that if it is formatted for a Playstation, it cannot be used for any other devices but if it is formatted for the XBox One series of Games Consoles, files such as music, photos and videos can be accessed via PCs and Windows laptops but any games can still only be read by the XBox. Personally, if I needed another portable HDD, I would certainly buy this again so I recommend that you buy it as it does the job and if looked after it will continue doing the job for many years to come.

I've only been using this for a few days, so I can't vouch for its reliability but first impressions are good.Although I buy all my internal drives from WD, I've never really liked their external USB offerings. What initially attracted me to this version (4TB/RED) was the price, it being one of the lower priced 4TB USB3 drives. It came already formatted as NTFS (although I've just realised that I neglected to check the cluster size...DOH!) and was ready to go.So far, I've copied about 2.5TB to this drive without any dramas whatsoever. Copying from another USB3 source, overall transfer speeds ranged from 75-95MBps, which is pretty much what I'd expect.Physically, it's awful. The case looks like it's been created by somebody working blindfolded; the half smooth/half rippled effect is surely a result of a drunken bet, rather than thoughtful design. Also, the red colour bears little resemblance to the product images. Rather than the deep, almost metallic looking red in the photos, the actual drive is almost pink and the material is a VERY cheap looking plastic. It comes complete with a (colour matched) short USB cable but the USB connector on the drive itself is the 'Micro B' variety, which means (if your cable collection is anything like mine) you'll be limited to using this same cable.Apart from the horrible aesthetics (and annoying 'Micro B' port), I'm happy with it so far.

OK, some background. I have a PlayStation Pro and was going to upgrade the 1Tb HDD to 2Tb seeing as there was no support for external storage drives. Then along came the 4.50 system software update with support for external drives up to 8Tb. The only 'catch' as such being that they need to be USB 3.0 and, according to some who were on the Beta at any rate, not have additional USB ports for some reason. Not one to take a chance with such things, and seeing as the cost difference between 8Tb and 4Tb external HDDs isn't exactly minimal, I opted for a 4Tb. My thinking being that, to be honest, when you add to internal 1Tb (which will still be used for game saves and assorted data that doesn't get stored to the external HDD)a total of 5Tb with 4Tb reserved for game installs will be plenty. Then it was a matter of which drive, and personal experience leads me towards WD (with a three year warranty) rather than Seagate. So how did the install go? Literally took less than a minute including finding the USB at the rear of the PlayStation Pro to plug it in and for the console to identify the drive and reformat it. Works like a charm. Silent in operation, tucked away out of sight behind the console and doesn't even get particularly warm either. Would I recommend this drive to anyone wanting to upgrade the storage capacity of a PlayStation 4 or Pro? Hell yes...

This has served its purpose well already. Was unsure as to whether to buy it given some negative reviews but I found that all the drives had similar levels of some negatives. [they just don't make 'em like they used to any more I guess]. I plumped for this because my son has one of the older versions and it has served him very well for years. One of the scathing reviews said the older ones are better and that these new ones are not as reliable.I bought this just to have a proper Time Machine backup. Had to format the drive for Mac use. There was no obvious instructions on how to do this so I did contact Western Digital. They sent me a link to the instructions online. Was easy enough to do I guess. My macbook played up a few months later refusing to boot up properly etc. and very very very slow. Hard drive partially died. Luckily I had my Passport at the ready! Was able to have a new hard drive installed and all my goodies nicely restored to the new drive. I'm very happy with this. As for its longevity - time alone will tell. (I did also copy all my documents to a USB zip drive in case the Passport did not deliver like some reviewers had said. My advice: whichever product you buy/use for backup always have another recent copy at least of your essential files you don't want to lose.
