It seems every time I get one of these drives (I've got half a dozen now) it's smaller and lighter than the last. This one has lost a few millimeters in length since the last iteration and has rounded corners, which is better as the squared edges were a little sharp when carried in a bag compartment.Software for Windows and Mac is installed on the drive - WD Backup, WD Security (encryption), WD Drive Utilities (varying levels - and elapsed time - of drive checks plus config options like sleep time and disabling the LED). The final options are to connect to a MyCloud Home device if you have one, or to download files from a social media account to your Passport drive. These all installed under Windows without issue and all seemed to work without the reboot that installation advises. All except WD Security that is, which refused to recognise the drive type until after a reboot. Setting a password to encrypt the content of the drive was then straightforward. You can configure the app to recognise the drive and not require the password, otherwise if you forget the password wiping the drive is the only alternative.Apart from the reboot all went smoothly. I don't have one of the MyCloud Home drives so couldn't test synching data to it.The drive is pretty fast in copying files over the USB3 connection and I had no issues with it in use. The only thing I would add is that drives like these are still more fragile than an SSD so while they are easily portable from a size perspective, bouncing around in a bag is likely to reduce the MTBF (mean time before failure). I see a few people using similar drives while commuting and have seen them dropped and shoved quite roughly into rucksacks and bags. An SSD is more expensive but likely to last longer if used for travelling.

I produce videos for clients. One of my overseas customers wanted the raw video footage (800GB) but had a company policy not to use Dropbox etc. The most effective way of getting it to him was to buy one of these cheap drives and post it. It arrived safely so I assume that the drive is rugged enough for normal travel use. £/GB isn't great but that's made up in form factor and durability. Speed of data transfer also wasn't outstanding so I would only use these drives for archiving off a camera, for example, not as a 'live' data drive. I also offer this as a service for my clients on completion of a video project - if they want the project files and raw data to be archived,I bung it all onto one of these drives and stick it in a fireproof cupboard (or send it to them).

You have to cringe on reviewers previous complaining its 4.5tb when formatted. That's basic hard drive 101 stuff people and has been for decades. The filesystem reserves some of the space you'll never get the full amount.Anyway. Perfect drive. 5tb physically smaller than 4 year old 2tb WD ultra which I dropped, doh! So we've come a long ways in 3/4 years. Speeds as fast as any self powered USB 3 on the market, its not solid state and no better or worse than any other 5tb self powered on the market. Basically at the price point on sale (about 70 euros i think it worked out as) and the fact its WD its a bargain. Buy it. Top marks! (had it about 3 weeks now zero issues)

I bought this when it was on special offer of only £70.99.At this price it really was a no brainer as it does not need a separate power supply to the hard drive. It's a case of pull in and off you go.A thing to watch out for was that I did use it on a hub and it must not have had enough power supplied to it so I attached it to a separate USB3 socket. It is super quick and a must have to use as a windows back up.I have this set to back my computer up every Sunday.I may decide to partition it later but at the moment I do not feel the need.It is super quick when copying to and from and for a 5TB Passport hard drive I thinks its a great addition to my computer.

I have bought several WD portable external drives over the years, and found them to be totally reliable. Once set up, my experience is that they just work. If you are a Mac user like me, you will need to run Disk Utility to format the disk, for example as "Mac OS Extended - Journaled". This is very quick and easy, and only needs doing once.Although neither as fast (nor expensive) as an SSD, this traditional kind of disk is ideal both for routine backups and transferring large amounts of data between machines. Just be sure to check current prices and any special offers, as you can quite often get a larger capacity disk for similar price to a lower capacity one.

I’ve used a number of portable HDDs over the years and WD has been my preferred choice for a while, and this is no exception:- sturdy device, noticeably slimmer than other versions- works seamlessly with both Macs and my Window 10 PC- comes pre-formatted- has encryption at the hardware level which is nice- does come with other WD software (eg backup software) but I’ve never used these items. Note that they do take up a bit of space on the HDD so you don’t get the full capacity.Overall an ideal device to either carry around or use as a backup device. Is pretty fast (not as fast as a SSD) and is definitely good value for money.

This WD 1TB portable hard drive is a good value companion for anyone that needs access to high volumes of data in the go.It's a standard hard disk drive rather than SSD but still manages up to 140 Mb per second which is acceptable for most tasks. The plastics used for the case are high quality so this should stand up to daily use.One thing that does make this stand out is hardware encryption, this means you can use the free WD software to protect your data with a password, great if you regularly travel with sensitive files.Overall this is a good little hard drive at what I'd argue is a good price.

I have always used western digital for all my portable storage and so this is no different.I aware by the quality of this company and their products. This hardrive is much smaller and thinner than previous models I’ve purchased and this makes it excellent for travel - with it being this small it even fits in your pocket. It comes with a usb cable (I would prefer a choice now a days of a usb c also as this is what is beginning to be more popular) however this works as I’ve adaptors and the product works with them. All in all the case is robust and it’s a great product. Transfer rates are fast.

WD are known for great reliability. After owning many dozens of WD drives over the years, I think only 1 has failed.2.5" drives stagnated for a long while. 4TB was the maximum size for 2.5" for a very long time. So it's great to see 5TB 2.5" drives come down to such a low price. £70 for a 2.5 drive at 5TB is a great deal. It's sill hard to pick 2.5" at £70 when you can get 14TB 3.5" drives for as low as £190 regularly but sometimes you just want a low power small dimension device for portability.Looking forward to 6TB 2.5" drives soon (I hope).

Owned this for 8-ish months now.Very good Quality compact HD with password protect. Easy to use and quick file transfers.I needed a better (quality) 1-stop storage solution, as opposed to keeping various files and photos on numerous/slow SD cards.Saves clogging up the HD on the laptop, making that faster too!!Keeps files safer (offline) from any potential malware attacks or any computer crashes etc.It works every time, little bit of software that comes with it is good, and it can be password protected for extra security.

As above, (WD 1TB My Passport Portable Hard Drive) I tried everything in my brothers 65" C9 LG OLED, it would not record live TV using a USB pen drive, no matter the formatting, it point blank refused, Tried different sized 8gb, 16gb, 128gb...all suggestions on the internet. In the end I heard someone mention you needed a physical platter drive rather than a flash USB drive. I looked and not a lot of information out there. It came down to whether or not the tv could power this drive. It does, and live tv finally works.

Really impressed with how good this hard drive is, especially considering how low the price is.The hard drive itself is rather thing and lightweight, making it perfect for travelling. It arrives Mac ready, but can easily be formatted to work with a PC.Only negative is that the read/write speeds aren't fast enough in my opinion, so I would recommend getting the slightly more expensive WD hard drives. However if you are on a budget, I would highly recommend this,4/5( Click “Helpful” if this helped ^__^ )

Unlike some portable disk drives, the casing of this unit is quite robust and should remain dent and scratch free with normal everyday use. It activates immediately once plugged in via its USB 3.0 cable. The data transfer rate appears fast and the disk can be dismounted and remounted to the PC without problems. The drive is quiet and there is minimal vibration when it is in use. This is an excellent example of what Western Digital is able to achieve in the area of lightweight, high capacity disk drives.

The form factor is perfect. It is very compact and light weight for a 5TB device. About 4.54TB was available for me to use. The only issue I find is that the micro-B connector on it doesn't appear to be very robust. The connector wobbles a bit inside the housing. If you are going to buy this then my recommendation would be to leave the usb cable connected to the hard drive permanently to avoid too my connect/disconnects which can stress the connector and damage it.

Authentic to the description, a GPT sytem partition, the only disadvantage that i noticed it's the real storage size, in my case i bought a 5To product but the real size was only 4.54 To, I know as a computer scientist that firmware and system partition occupy a part of the total size but not until 500Go is much than i excepted, apart from that i really recommend it, the transfer rate goes up to 8gb/s to clone the full system with clonezilla as exemple.
