There is no getting away from it, this is a product for the Mac enthusiast and it only has thunderbolt connectivity. As has been stated in other reviews here it does not have a thunderbolt socket and so will not support daisychaining, it would have to go at the end of the daisychain. So let us look at the great things about this drive. There is 4TB of storage, which is mirrored to give a 2TB drive. It is portable as it is powered through the Thunderbolt cableThe cable wraps around the unit to create a bumperThe integrated cable means one less cable to carry with me when travellingIt is easy to set up and useThe data transfer speeds are excellent, I use a SSD MacBook Pro which is fast, there is a slight delay when using the drive but the transfer speeds are as swift as one would expect from Thunderbolt. The limitations areIt is an expensive piece of kit, (I was fortunate enough to be sent mine for review) but it is not cheap to buy.It is bulky and heavy, but hey, you get 4TB and so the flip side is it is amazingly small. The fan is noisy when it kicks inI love this drive, it is in my laptop bag all the time and allows me to carry most of my image library with me on the road, I can also transfer files knowing they are safe as they are protected by RAID.I am delighted with this piece of kit and recommend it with no hesitation.

The first unit delivered had a fault on drive 2 but from 40 + years as a user/designer this is no big deal. The second unit arrived in three days and worked perfectly right out of the box. The drive gets very hot when used continuously, no big surprise there. The small built in fan works well coming on automatically when needed. It does not take long to cool down when used intermittently.I think its a little expensive but the build quality seems very good and the transfer rate is quite acceptable. I have it set in its default 4TB configuration. Transferring from the internal 1TB drive of my Mac Book Pro to this drive is really quick.I did not measure it but I transferred several hundred large JPG files originally from my Canon 5D3 camera and it was over quite fast. Not very scientific I know but I am quite pleased with it.There is one thing I am not happy about in particular when thinking of expensive equipment like this. Should the cable become defective you must return the unit for a repair. I would have preferred a substantial socket into which the cable can be plugged. Having said that I would certainly recommend this drive..

I have had this drive for nine months now and up until yesterday I would have given it five stars without hesitation: It's fast; convenient (needing no external power supply and leaving my MacBook Pro USB ports free); and well designed (Thunderbolt connector tidily plugs into the case and the cable sits in a neat rubber "trough" around the case). However, I've knocked a star off as I'm nursing a gash across my thumb! The reason for this? The WD logo is a thin metal plate glued to the top of the case. The "WD" letters are punched out of the metal plate which leaves a sharp point at the bottom of the letter "W". During my travels, this sharp point must have caught on the fabric inside my computer case, lifting it slightly. When I was preparing to plug the drive into my computer, my thumb brushed across the logo; the point dug into my thumb and cut a groove across it!After I finished performing first aid on myself, I got a craft knife and carefully prised the offending logo from the drive to prevent future incidents.I recommend that if you buy one of these (and I can't see why you wouldn't), remove the logo before it bites you too!

At last a WoWzer of a storage device that is at fast as my SSD, but holds a huge amount more! It is lightening fast,I have been looking for a long time for a high volume storage device, where I could hold all my images in one unite rather than 7.It was easy to transfer my Images using my Macbook loaded with an 500mb SSD and the images held on a variety of WD Books and Passports. Transfer was easy and lightening fast. I thought it would take weeks to finish this work of re- cataloging tens of thousand images in NEF format, instead it just took a couple of days. What took the time was the re-cataloging, the picture transfer took just a couple of hours. I still have plenty of space.I understand some MS users have had problems with it,but please note, you really need a fast processor to notice the difference, as the is the computer and motherboard you use rather than this PassportSolar I have not been able to get a protective case for it, as it is twice the thickness of the 2TB version. I am sure someone will come up with one, but I am not worried as the Storage device is of a real solid build.

Just in case you are looking to fit these to the latest Thunderbolt port, be aware this is the first or second generation Thunderbolt. I use mine with a 2015 iMac as a simple way of getting extra capacity. In the real world this old tech Thunderbolt is faster on my iMac than a high capacity USB 3.0 external drive but this could be down to the way the two separate 2TB drives are striped on the Pro. Mine was £150 as a refurbished unit direct from WD. It can get a little warm, cured in my case by mounting on top of a solid billet of alloy, this acting as a huge heat sink. For a portable drive, I use USB 3.0 My Passport Ultra drives as these are lighter, cheaper and fast enough to load images and for document work. The Pro is used as my LR catalogue volume. Works really well. External SSD drives are faster but really costly. If you want to take advantage of the striped speed, make sure you back up as there is no redundancy if one of the two discs fails.

I have three of these for quick transfers from two Macintosh machines, and for storing some media files. People buying these and complaining about having some data loss need to be careful - these are by default set up as a RAID 0 configuration so if either of the two drives inside fails then you lose everything. It is possible to reformat with Apple's Disk Utility tool and break them into two 2TB drives (if you have the 4TB model), but performance is halved to around 120MB/s rather than 240 MB/s.As a drive to be used for non critical storage, or for fast, large transfers between machines, they are exceptionally good, but you really don't buy a RAID 0 configuration for serious backup. You want a RAID 1 configuration with redundancy. In regards to reliability, I have had 3 of the 4TB models, one of them has been running for months without a hiccup.Performance is very good, much better than any external, self powered unit at this price.

I will keep this brief. This feels like a solid bit of kit, I have no idea if that translates to it being physically robust but it definitely feels like it should survive in hold baggage, if that's what it comes to. I bought this for its RAID capability when travelling, much easier to manage 1 drive than 2. But if you're not flying BA (shame) you may well find this little fella is going to push your cabin weight limit to and beyond the max. It's brilliant, it's fast but it's heavy. If, like me, you're using it for travel photography you'd better make sure you have a jacket pocket big enough to avoid your hand baggage going over limits. Yes,it feels like it'll survive in the hold but that's certainly not where I want my precious photos to be travelling!

This is a great drive for use with the mbp on the go. I use it as a 4TB drive rather than a 2tb mirror and it is excellent - when the fan kicks in (under heavy use) it is a little whiny but otherwise its a really nice quality device. It is larger than you might expect but the measurements are in the specs so if it works for you buy it.

Great speed.. as you'd expect from a raid thunderbolt drive... only have two gripes.. 1) there is no thunderbolt output so you can't daisy chain the device... 2) as many have mentioned before the fan is soooo annoying when it kicks in with its high pitched drone... you can zone it out of your head but is annoying...

It does what it says it does, not a bother. Run it alongside my Mac Pro - has saved me from having to buy very expensive memory. Speed of connection fine. Had to purchase a firewire to thunderbolt for connection. Also - nifty carriage with cable wrapping tight to box.

Good solid and fast drive. So far no problems. As others have said the drive is a little loud. But it is a good back up drive and can run HD Pro Res projects off it easily.

26.9.2016

Top product, only slight gripe is actual connector is weak and I've had one give up, it's gone again, so I'm limping on. Otherwise, bulletproof and secure.

1.11.2014

A professional piece of kit, solid and well made with good connections and provides the secure data back up that I require.

8.7.2014

This is the second one i have bought. Small, Robust and has a v fast transfer speed.Great value for money.

10.3.2015

Exactly as expected. The only reason for four stars is that it could be cheaper.
