First off, the delivery. Spot on, could even track the package right to my doorstep. Nice feature! Packaging was typical - INADEQUATE. Seriously... How many times does Azn need telling? These are sensitive devices. The reason I mention this will appear later in my review.Internal packaging by Toshiba is the reasonable inflated bubble wrap. The USB3 cable was folded up 4 times and as a result has 4 kinks in it, 2 of which are pretty brutal. The drive socket wasn't completely firm, a small bit of play was felt inserting and removing the cable. A bit more research revealed this type of socket is usually soldered to the drive's board and looking at the size of the drive (a footprint slightly SMALLER than a 50g tobacco tin!)it's very likely this socket is soldered to the drive, so if you're thinking you can remove the case if it fails at a later date and stick the drive in another case or computer, think again. This alone is why I removed a star. If the socket fails, a new one typically costs a fiver and that's before you learn to solder or pay someone else to do it. I'll probably wrap some tape around the end of the drive to limit the cable movement too but that's just me being paranoid, since during a file transfer to the Toshiba external drive, one of my internal drives kicked out a couple of Command Timeout errors in the SMART readout, something I've never seen in 18 months of owning my system. A thorough geek-esque system check revealed the Toshiba was totally blame-free :)CrystalDiskMark & CrystalDiskInfo reveal more information. According to CDI, the drive is a SATA II drive. Not really an issue since USB3 speeds on my laptop max out around 130MB/s but is it really a SATA II? I hope it's not an old drive inside, I haven't seen anything but SATA III and NVMe in years. Still, CDM speed tests were pretty much what I hoped for - at best 131MB/s writing a 1GB file, 130MB/s writing and reading a 2GB file (I ran this test several times). SMART codes seemed perfectly normal at this point. Most of the time the speed hovered between 120-130MB/s whilst writing large files, occasionally it would drop to 80-90MB/s. A large folder of image files gave the typical snails pace you get from a HDD. All files transferred ok, although I discovered the transferred folder (42.2GB) was 5MB smaller than the source, despite being identical file systems (right down to cluster and sector size, on NTFS). No files are missing... Never seen that before in an identical setup but during the backups, I had a lot of "firsts" (and in 26 years of computing, I just wanted to put it down to my age lol). Finally, the reason for the packaging comment at the start. During tests, I noticed the "Disk Shift" SMART output changing a few times. Exhaustive reading threw out several possibilities, not least one being external force - a package being tossed around, for example. I've had parcels from here that looked like they'd been kicked about. It's unacceptable and it likely reduces the lifespan of most sensitive devices. Idling, the Disk Shift output returns to zero. Whilst active, I've seen values from 1 up to 22, 14 has appeared a few times. It seems like the drive is shifting when running at full speed but no other errors have emerged yet.Phew. Lastly, The auto power-off (1min or so) is a little annoying but considering how hot it gets (45C from 25C after a 10 minute file transfer) it's probably a good thing. Also, yesterday this drive was cheaper than the Seagate/Maxtor equivalents, today they're the same price - Something to bear in mind if, like me, you were comparing several drives and cost was a deciding factor. The drive seems to be exactly what it would be, great size, plenty of care needed to keep it in working condition but always treat your external drives with great care regardless. 1TB of course will show as approx 931GB in Windows. I run a dual-boot system (Win/Linux) and the drive works fine in both operating systems. Would I trust it with critical data? I don't know yet.

The Best of the BestI was looking for really big space as my laptop has been having a lot of issues lately and i wanted to back-up everything in one place (especially my university work). I wanted something durable that could last me for years. I've found it! and i don't have to look any further! This is a really nice External Hard Drive, it's really sturdy and nice, and surprising how light this thing is considering how much space it holds (I bought the 4TB)!It's really easy to use, you just plug it in, and you can drag and drop or copy and paste your things over! I highly recommend purchasing this! Plus, 4TB is going to last me a very long time, i don't see myself using that much space anytime soon,so it's definitely getting its money worth out of it.It came packaged really well! I've added an image to this review to show that and it also comes with its own 3.0 USB cable. It is indeed quite short, but this isn't a problem for me as I need it at home more than out and about, it's perfect length for being stationary/having it next to your computer/whatever you're using it on. I haven't taken it out anywhere yet (portable wise), but it's quite small so no doubt it could fit in a small bag/deep pockets! The delivery was extremely speedy as well - it arrived 4-5 days earlier than it was meant to! It looks exactly like the pictures shown and has a lovely blue light when connected to your device, it flashes when things are being transferred, which i think is great.Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase and I definitely recommend buying. Thank you Toshiba for such a wonderful product!

At the end of the day it’s an external hard drive and like any other 3.0 with a usb they will work for Playstation or Xbox. If they have their own format tool which they do you won’t have any problems. The first thing that comes up once you’ve connected it and powered on the console a message saying “Not Compatable”. Well it actually is it’s just that it’s not formatted and more like it’s been pre formatted to NTFS which is what windows use. Once you have formatted it, it takes literally seconds that’s it.Once you go to your system settings scroll down to Devices, USB Storage Devices, External USB 3.0 Toshiba. There it will ask you to format to an extended storage. Please note, once you have done this the preferred drive will be the external one, I’d suggest to use the internal hard drive for main storage as it will be more cooled from the fan inside the console. If you have say The Last Of Us which is about 50GB move that over to the external drive as there isn’t anymore updates for that game now. While on the subject keep games like Red Dead Redemption 2 on the main drive I only say as with new games your going to get a lot of updates like still Grand Theft Auto 5 and running the external drive constantly with the updates ploughing at it every day or so wouldn’t be good for it.I haven’t tried any of the games running off it yet but from what I read online they run faster apparently.I would recommend a 4TB hard drive as after the format with the systems own volume putting its own data on your left with about 3.5TB

I plugged this into my main Mac running macOS Mojave and Disk Utility would not see it at all. So I tried it on my MacBook Pro and this time it showed up. After formatting it works on my main Mac without any problems (so far). Some competing drives come with NTFS drivers for Mac, but this one doesn't. Indeed on the box it states reformatting is required for use with macOS. Reformatting is a good idea anyway if you are only using Macs, to enable encryption. The technical specs on the Amazon product page are a bit askew: RAM size 4TB, Hard Drive Size 4GB. The drive I have is 4TB, which after formatting with APFS - most suitable for Mojave - yields 3.6TB of usable space. That is quite a sizeable difference from 4TB,but more or less what one expects from manufacturers. But it does tend to grate after all these years of the one million byte megabyte fantasy.I am wondering about the age of the drive, or whether it has been tested with later versions of macOS, as the box is marked macOS v10.12, 10.11, and 10.10. macOS 10.12 is quite old now. macOS v10.13 was released 18 months ago, and that is not on the box.The drive itself is almost silent and has very reasonable transfer rates for a USB drive. It comes with a 2 year limited warranty, but no information on whether you need to register at the time of purchase. I have emailed Toshiba to find out.The drive arrives well packaged in heavy bubble 'tubes' - like ordinary bubble wrap but in the form of long bubbles.Overall it's a good purchase.

minimal and sleek design. lightweight but doesn't feel cheap or full of air. BUT due to a poor design choice the USB cable supplied *only just* fits into the HD itself and is extremely easy to knock out, because it doesn't go in far enough to actually clip the anchor stubs on the Micro USB 3 end, because the plug is set too far back inside the casing. top notch value for money and transfer speed. I actually think it looks very acceptable design wise, my previous external HD was a Lacie Starck "aluminium space block" (which, incidentally, performed terribly, was incredibly noisy and disintegrated after minimal use, but it's no longer sold on amazon so yeah). this is silent with just a flashing status light.slightly bigger than smartphone but not as big as a phablet. easy to fit in a pocket. I would recommend buying a Micro USB 3 lead that has a slimmer profile or something to fit in the end of it, also the one supplied is ridiculously short. 8/10 as it stands, plus or minus a point depending on whether 3rd party cables fit better and make a locked connection.

Decent build quality. Trusted brand in the hard disk industry. Respectable 2 year warranty.Effortless and quick setup with no glitches (Windows 7).Transfer speeds on USB 3 as fast as expected.Nice, subtle blue light is especially useful – stays on when connected, blinks during activity, and goes off when safely removed via operating system before physical disconnection.512GB meets my data backup needs. (Also, safer having two small disks rather than one large disk, because if there is a device failure there is a second device for rescue. It all depends on how much you value your data, I suppose.)Cable is decent quality at 43cm long, which is neat and for me is preferable to a longer, flimsier cable for this type of application.Rounded corners a plus point. Minor gripe (hence not 5 stars) is the lack of a protective pouch.Very quiet. Will be used for taking regular backups and not to be always connected, so expect durability and reliability not to be an issue, but it is too soon to tell.

There’s not much to say about hard drives these days. They’re cheap, not that fast, and come in ever increasing capacities. The Toshiba Canvio Basics follows those trends. It doesn’t stand out; you could choose any other hard drive and probably be just as happy. However, this is a rather cheap external hard drive that isn’t very attractive but will happily blend into the rest of your devices. Attached to my Xbox One I never need to see it again. One feature that I like quite a bit is the LED indicator. If it’s connected to a USB 3 port the light goes blue and if connected to a USB 2 port it goes white. This is a nice visual subtly, but it can also be really handy if troubleshooting. This drive isn’t super-fast.My Seagate 1tb drive which is just a bit larger eaks out a bit more MB/s, but the Toshiba Canvio isn’t slow. For most use cases it will be perfectly suitable.[The 1st picture (black background) is for this drive and the 2nd picture (blue/white background) is for my Seagate 1TB HDD]

A small unit with real power! Arrived quickly and in perfect order. Initially connected to computer using a short (10 inch) extension cable from my USB 3 socket. Created a shortcut on the desktop and then proceeded to Windows control panel where I opened the back-up icon. Clicked on 'back-up' and away it went, only to stop after about 14% completed. Tried to repeat with similar results. Gave up and retired to think and study 'troubleshooting' advice. Realised that using the little extension cable was the problem. Dispensed with the cable and plugged the unit into the computer using only the supplied connecter - bingo! Recorded 97% and then seemed to go ino a loop without end.Stopped the backup procedure and quickly restarted without canceling previous input - job done. Really impressed with the small footprint of the unit and the speed with which it took my files onboard. Remember to read the rather limited instructions on the PDF

Due to my ineptitude, while tinkering with the partitions on this hard disk drive I managed to 'brick' the drive - to the extent that it wasn't displayed as a new drive when plugged into a USB port.Fearing the worst, I phoned the hotline at Toshiba Storage Solutions, fully expecting a barrage of keypad menus and hours of muzak before perhaps finally reaching a human who could help. Imagine my surprise, therefore, when within three seconds I got through directly to an extremely pleasant, knowledgeable and good-humoured Toshiba technician in Germany. He patiently guided me through the steps needed to resuscitate the drive and also offered some very useful tips.I cannot recommend the support I received highly enough.Given that Toshiba drives are similar in price to those of other major manufacturers, it's worth purchasing one simply because, should you ever need it, their support is superb.

These items are small and lightweight and plug-n-play so quickly installed. My Windows 7 computer found the installation process easy enough to handle and this happens each time I connect. The USB connector is quite thin and doesn't block the front panel connectors next to it on the PC... Even so, some flash drives are bulky and can cause problems to other devices connected above or below these USB inputs. I've copied several large and small files from the PC on to these Toshiba hard drives. It helps to highlight and use the COPY option rather than the MOVE option. Check the Properties of the drives and their folders and files and then compare their file size totals.I've used other hard drives but the Toshiba is smaller in size and easier to move around. The prices are worth consideration and especially when offered an extra Amazon discount that I've got after joining Amazon Prime...

Perfect for purpose.Basically I bought a new LG 2018 4K Smart TV and needed the option to record. (I'm relying a lot on the built in tuner etc rather than a dedicated box.) This item came with some good reviews.Have tried and tested (just plugged and played into USB port 1) No formatting needed. If your smart TV has the feature of being able to record then an HDD like this should be perfectly suitable for you. Once recorded you can have option to pause/rewind. Very nice and essentially completes the setup for me (I am trying to avoid bulky set top boxes)This item is also much smaller than I thought. Am currently looking at a way to secure it to the back of the television (similar to an HDD bracket for PC)Would be much tidier this way.I believe it also works fine for Samsung TV's. So expect it will work for all brands (AS long as your TV supports recording (many don't))

I am very pleased I bought this external HDD. It seems to be performing as advertised and up till now it has posed me no problem whatsoever on any of my three computers with numerous USB 3.0 ports. Before receiving this drive, I was using an old spare internal HDD dating 2008 to transfer files from one computer to another, and between the two there’s a enormous difference in many respects. While the latter needed a power supply, a huge adaptor and a Sata to USB 2.0 cable, the former just plugs into a USB 3.0 port and sits unobtrusively on the top of the computer.Size wise, the Toshiba is much thinner and smaller than an ordinary 3.5” HDD and weighs hardly anything in comparison. Moreover, while this drive is near silent and remains cold even after heavy use, the old HDD was noisy and always hot on operation.Toshiba HDTB310EK3AA 1TB

My 1tb drive arrived this morning and it was really quick delivery seeing as I wasn't expecting it for at least week. It came in a plain bubble package although it was a bit too big for the size of box this came in but it was in perfect condition. there are no instructions of how to use the drive in the box and as this was my first time buying one it was a bit disappointing but five mins looking on line found me the answers. The first usb port didn't recognise but it finally showed up in my g drive with it showing as Toshiba which was a big help. I have copied many of my games data to the drive and I have yet to run the games but so far so good.Just to let you know once the drive was recognised by my pc the GB usage is only 867 GB and there are 2 files in there one of them a manuel hopefully I can delete them

I am very happy with this hard drive, it is so good that I have bought two of them. You can get them in many variations, but I decided to get mine in the 2TB variation. The hard drive allows me to store all of my video files and final cut pro files which take up a ton of space! I also put some HD films on there so when I am travelling I have them there on the go, which isn't clogging up my MacBook, which has limited storage space.I recommend this to anybody! You can use them with both Windows and Macintosh (with Macintosh you do have to format it though, but that takes 2 minutes!), and if you scroll around on amazon for a little, you can find a nice case to put it in!If you found my review helpful, please rate it accordingly, it really helps me out! Thank you, have a nice day! :)

I bought this to attach to a Raspberry Pi that was storing images from other Pi cameras around the home with MotionEyeOS.Setup was just plugging it in to the Pi's USB slot. The Pi has the official 2.5amp supply and no additional power was required and the performance of the Pi didn't decrease at all. MotionEye found the drive and labelled it correctly right away, no formatting or mounting of the drive manually required. It just worked. It's compact and very quiet, didn't seem to get hot at all while it was running on my desk. It's now hidden away in the home doing a vital job and I'm considering getting another one to use as portable storage with my laptop.I can't really find any faults with it,but I haven't had it long enough to comment on its reliability long-term.
