This is a good external hard drive. It contains automatic backup software so it will back up your computer with all changes since your last backup – a terribly convenient feature. Without that, you would have to copy everything every time which woudl be terribly slow and inefficient.I have owned an old-style Maxtor hard drive for about a decade and it still works, which is reassuring. I will show you a photo of it in a moment – it is embarrassingly large. The relevance is that I trust the Maxtor brand so I expect that this new one will be as reliable.External hard drives have two main uses – either as a backup or to expand the memory of your computer. So, if your computer is running out of hard drive space, just keep one of these plugged in.On the other hand, if using it as a backup, I would not leave it permanently plugged in unless you need to simply because if a virus strikes it will take out your external hard drive at the same time. But plugging it into the rear of your machine and unplugging repeatedly it is a hassle – to get around that, I use a USB hub with switches. Simply flick the switch when not in use to protect it from a virus. If you haven’t bought an external hard drive for a long time and if your previous one needed an external power source, please be aware that modern ones like this do not need an external power source – they plug in just like a USB flash drive. They are also less than half the size and weight – I will show you a photo of my old Maxtor drive side-by-side with this new one in a moment. The reason why they are so musch smaller and lighter is because the new ones are designed to fit inside laptops whereas the old external hard drives were designed to fit inside desktops.Read/write times are fine. It is a good hard drive, made by a reputable manufacturer.Photo 1 shows it in its packaging.Photo 2 shows you the drive and the cable to connect it your computer. The £10 note is to give you an idea of its size.Photos 3 & 4 show it next to my old Maxtor hard drive. The difference in size (and weight) is massive.I keep it in a Case Logic case. It fits perfectly as you can see in photos 6-7. The case contains a mesh pocket for storing the cable in which is an essential feature (see photo 8). The case is here: Black Case Logic QHDC-101 Hard Drive Case

It's small and quite quiet but worth buying a case to go with it as lightweight.Maxtor (Samsung) have a decent reputation so paying approx. £70 was OK.I bought this to back-up photos and videos which are sitting on an older USB 2.0 connected external hard-drive.So, even though the Maxtor is connected via USB 3.0, I realise I won't get the high-speed. The drive being backed-up does also have quite a few smaller files which impacts transfer rates (a LOT!!!)BUT, here is where a star is lost...I initially created a back-up job using the Drive Manager software provided. Backing up around 80gb took 31 HOURS!!!!I then changed a single file to check the incremental back-up of the software. After 10 mins it had gone through 1000 of 190,000 files with 0 bytes transferred. At that same rate we get.... 31 HOURS!!!Without using the Drive Manager software (i.e. selecting the disk name, right-click copy and then the Maxtor drive and right-click paste) the same task was achieved in an hour with max transfer rates of about 40mb/s for the larger files. There's no update available for the Drive Manager Software. The obvious solution is "Don't use the software and you have a 5-Star backup drive"but that's not really the point.I also did a quick check on transfer speeds for my internal HDD and my SSD. to see how close I could get to the 5gb/s.SSD : 10gb of data (admittedly many smaller files) took 10 mins with max transfer rates of (briefly) of 120mb/sHDD : 10gb of data (mainly music so larger files) took 2 mins with max transfer rates of 100mb/s (and hovered around 60 mb/s)Soa) not sure what you need to do/have to achieve 5gb/s transfer ratesb) the disk is good for transfer of large files from internal devices (photos, videos music etc)c) be prepared to leave it running for smaller files.d) Don't rely on the provided Device Manager softwareObviously once you have a base back-up you only need to copy across new files the next time which takes much of the pain away... which is where some decent software would have helped.Maths isn't my strong point so apologies for any calculation errors.

Ordered on a Friday, delivered on the Monday, thank you Amazon for being great as per usual.I bought this to use as extended storage for my PS4 Pro. I already have an internal 2TB HDD installed which is filling up fast, so this extra Maxtor M3 2 TB USB 3.0 Slimline Portable Hard Drive - Black 2TB is just future proofing to get me through until next generation consoles arrive. Couldn't believe how easy it was to get up and running:One end of the supplied ~30cm long USB cable goes into the M3 External Drive, the other goes into the front right USB slot on my PS4 Pro (the USB port on the back of the PS4 Pro is now used for charging Headphones etc). The USB port is enough to power the Maxtor M3,no additional cables or power source required. The PS4 Notifications tell me there's now and External HDD device connected and that the PS4 wants to format it.Tell the PS4 to go ahead and literally seconds later you're ready to go.I've downloaded/transferred from the original System Storage all digital apps to it like Netflix and Indie Games, the small ones take seconds, larger titles take around 5GB/min to transfer, e.g. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare takes around 10 minutes. Games that used to require their disc to be installed still require the disc to be installed, digital titles (which don't require a disc in the first place) run just as well from the External HDD as they did when installed on the Internal HDD.The Maxtor HDD itself is extremely light-weight, only a few grams, and now happily sits on it's side next to my PS4 Pro. As a super special extra bonus, the light on the Maxtor glows with a familiar PlayStation blue so it's like they were made for each other.Overall it's a perfect accessory for me - works as intended and one of the cheapest 2TB external HDD options around, so I'm delighted, hence the 5 Stars.

I have had the 2TB version for a while- which worked well. So I bought another - at 4TB size. The new Mac OS High Sierra is a problem with this however- a quick view of the www showed that like myself, many users having great trouble erasing the disk and partitioning it to use as a "Time Machine" backup as well as having a second partition for folder storage. This is getting crucial now laptops have only SSD sold state memory with much smaller sizes than the 1TB hard Disks of the last few years. This Maxtor 4TB USB 3.0 portable hard drive required me to use the Mac "Terminal" command line programme to unmount the disk using UNIX machine code before it could be formatted (Hint - it is blockedfrom formatting because the computer says "it cannot be unmounted")I suspect the problem is due to Mac, not Maxtor - as it has been reported on the WWW for 4TB External HDDs from WD as well as Maxtor. Just beware when you buy this that you may need to feel confident to use the "hidden" software codes of your computer to get this product to work.UPDATED: Now after a few months of use - this is working fine partitioned into a 1TB "time machine" and a 3TB off laptop store for photos, flims, music etc

This is the second one of these 4TB drives that I’ve bought, the other one is just over 1 year old and because I use it as the bulk storage on my server it’s been running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.People are rightly upset when they buy a new hard drive and it fails within the first few months. What you have to understand is that mechanical hard drives are a perfect example of the bath tub curve, Google it if you don’t know what that is. What it means is that a new hard drive is far more likely to fail than your old one you’ve had for serval years. It’s called early life mortality and from what I can see hard drives suffer from between 5% and 8% early life mortality. The solution to this is to plug your new hard drive in and leave it on for a week or so before transferring any data on to it. Just make sure it doesn’t keep going into sleep mode and spinning down. That way you should get over the first slope of the bath tub curve. Once you’re passed that bit you’ll probably be fine for the next 5 or 6 years. So, I’m a very happy customer and consider 4TB of storage for less than one hundred pounds to be an absolute bargain.

Had a really old portable drive that I used for about five years to back up my computers. It was a proper faff having to copy everything on my computer's drive over and over to ensure that I have copied over everything but the software that comes with this allows you to easily backup PCs as after your initial backup every subsequent one just copies over the new files or updates the files that have changed/been deleted. The product overall is of very high quality. Feels premium and works like a charm. No need to plug into the mains as this uses your computer's battery to power it. Since it has USB 3.0 you can copy a huge amount of data in a very short period of time.I was able to copy over roughly 150GB of data in about half an hour. On my previous drive this would have taken four times longer at around two hours!Would definitely recommend this product to anyone. Great for backing up and due to it's very quick read/write speed can also be used effectively as a gaming drive to run steam games from if you have limited HDD space on your PC. Overall very glad I bought this!

With all the uncertainty of whether any of us may be affected by a cyber attack, a worm, a Trojan or by any other means, backing up computer files has never been more necessary. This hard drive is an ideal device for such a process. It is easy to use straight out of the box and is powered via the USB cable from you device unlike some that require mains power. It is an ideal size, easy to use and gives that peace of mind that your files, photos etc. are safe should the unfortunate happen. You can put your programs back onto your device but if the files aren't backed up you may have lost them. Back it up on the Maxtor M3 1TB now. The price is very competitive compared to a 1TB device from a well known high street outlet who were charging £10 more.Having placed my order it arrived on the day stated. I am not on the payroll of this company and I do not know anyone employed by them. I had an issue and had to re-install everything on my laptop but not before purchasing this unobtrusive device and backing up my work first which took very little time.

I own three of these hard drives. A 4TB which runs 24/7, another 4TB backing up the one which runs all day, and now this latest 2TB, which is plugged into the Xbox One.Needless to say, the 4TB backup drive has never been needed. The main drive has been running almost constantly for around 5 years, and never failed once. The drive is perfect for use with the Xbox One. It's simply plug and play and away you go. I don't suffer any penalty on speeds from downloading directly to the HDD.It's close to silent (you won't hear it running), and generates very little heat. The drive is powered by USB (no mains power) and I was able to power it directly from the TV, as well as PC.To address negative reviews,Public Service Announcement : HARD DRIVES FAIL. You should be backing up your data, or else you will always run a risk. HDDs contain moving parts, and wear and tear will eventually get to them. This applies to your built in HDD as much as it does these portable ones. However, Maxtor are as reliable as you are likely to find.

I primarily bought this drive to use as an external hard drive for my Xbox one as it has double the capacity of the Xbox's internal hard drive. The Amazon packaging was minimal (nice to see after recent press coverage) but very well protected and the product packaging was colourful and vibrant (If you like that sort of thing). The drive is very light and slimline as described for the capacity and came with the standard USB connector as expected and doesn't require the need for any other power source so its truly a plug and play device. The drive is performing perfectly as a backup drive and I have transferred about 200 gigabytes of saved games from the Xbox onto the drive in about 35 minutes.Ihave owned Seagate drives before and they have always served me well as they are silent and last a long time which is why I chose the Maxtor M3.If I have any problems I will update my review to let you all know what I have experienced. All in all a great priced, great performing product that I'm sure will serve me well.

Bought a second one of these 2TB ext hard drives as the first was working well a year later. Cheap enough to have two alternating backups for safety. Good value at £57. Plastic rather than stylish metal case but does the job.I prepared for use with Time Machine by erasing in Disk Utility. Had to check the process by searching online (in Disk Utility, remember to view > Show All Devices; Scheme option - GUID Partition Table). I used 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted)' to password-protect the device. As expected, it took a long time for the first backup over USB 2.0 - 8 hours for 480GB. The next backup was a few minutes though.Straightforward and now I can alternate backup drives with Time Machine so have double protection if one fails. And both are encrypted and password-protected, in case they ever go astray. Very pleased with this setup.p.s thanks to previous buyers answering my question re. compatibility, which helped with choosing!

This is the second one that I have purchased, as the Maxtor is an excellent back up hard drive with a massive 1TB capacity. The reason for buying a second one was because a friend who is a Photographic Club member ran out of computer space, just like I did, and then transferred thousands of photographs onto his back up hard drive, which then crashed. Unless a specialist company can retrieve the files he has lost all his photographs, and he is very upset by this. He advised that club members whether they have computer space or not to get two back up hard drives as security of their work, and I took his advice.I would like to add that when I set this new one up it said that it does not support Windows Vista, only Windows 7 onwards. However, do not worry about this because it does work on Windows Vista. The icon still comes up and it works perfectly when transferring files, which is all I wanted it to do.

I've owned a number of external hard drives in the past and they've been somewhat a mixed bag. Either they've not been up to the job or have been unreliable and not lasted the course. After buying the 1TB version some time ago and being extremely happy with it I've now pushed the boat out and upgraded to the 4TB version. This is a very tidy bit of kit. The 3 year limited warranty shows the confidence manufacturer has in their product and having owned one for couple of years I have had no problems.I use it to store my media and stream it over my wireless network (I use Plex for this) and it is easily up to the job.Positives:+ USB 3.0 - It's very quick if you have a USB 3.0 port on your device.+USB powered - Convenient to not have to plug it into the mains+ Size - 2.5 size drive size so very neat and tidy+ 3 year limited warranty+ Quiet OperationNo real negatives. Highly recommended!

I've been using the Samsung M3 drives for years. Out of around 20 drives I've only had one fail (I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and think maybe it got bumped around too much). When they rebranded to Maxtor it just seemed like the company making the drives all along were now using their own brand. Same drive, different brand. No issues. However, on receiving a new Maxtor M3 drive today I couldn't help but notice it felt different in the hand (as I said I've held a number of these in the last few years). The texture is the same but they are lighter, slightly thiner and longer – it's a different design. Therefore, should this still be considered the M3 drive? My concern is that this is not the drive I'm used to relying on.I don't mind trying new things, but perhaps this should not be marketed as the M3 any longer. Will update my review after using for a few months.

So far so good. I'm happy. See attached pics with benchmarks, SMART data, and datasheet of the 2TB model.Pros:- quiet- little heat- 'transparent' interfaceNeutral:- ok design- ok performance- cable lengthCons:- yet another blue LED :DSo, so far so good. Luckily the interface is 'transparent', not something proprietary like a 3.5" WD I had before this. By transparent I mean you can 'S.M.A.R.T.' through the USB-SATA interface, and one can likely move drives in and out of the device without any compatibility issues. Which means I can upgrade this later, and use this drive in my PC or backup server no problems. This has a very energy efficient drive inside which I really like.I checked the SMART temperature in use: 33deg idle, 41 in use - hours of copying stuff onto it, 44 under benchmark stress load.

I've had one of these for more than a year now and just bought a second one – one for daily backups and one to store just my photos. They're really tiny and unobtrusive, and work on USB power alone so you don't need an extra power source. They work almost silently too – I have to check they're working by looking at the blue LED. The one I've had for a year hasn't missed a beat so far. The new one seems to be working well too. If you use it with a PC, it works straight out of the box. I use mine with a Mac though, and you have to to format it for Mac OS before using it – just 'erase' the drive in disk utility before you start – it takes about a minute. Dead easy. Then you use it like any other drive. The three-year warranty and very low price add up to make this an essential buy.
