I purchased this in May 2016, so here is my review after 4 months of owning the drive:For context, I purchased this external hard drive to use as storage for design documents as well as a time machine backup, and have been using it daily while connected to a 15” MacBook Pro Retina.--- Performance ---Firstly, transfer speed is great, files consistently transfer fast (Especially when formatted as Mac OS Extended - Which I highly recommend if using with a mac, maybe just keep small a Windows partition in case) and reliably, and the size of the drive (2Tb) is ideal for large documents and full device backups. This is great if you can’t afford the rather expensive thunderbolt equipped alternatives. But let’s get to the less reviewed features. With a degree in Industrial Design, and Ergonomics, I couldn’t help but focus on these features of the product.--- Design ---The drive is surprisingly okay to have sitting on your desk, it's not anything special, but it isn't ugly, put it that way. The light on the device lets you know when files are being transferred, and the device is connected, it works, just don’t expect to get any sleep if you leave it connected at night in your bedroom (it flashes a lot). The product is described as rugged. Let’s be clear here, this only extends as far as the rubber sleeve that is slid over the plastic hard drive enclosure. For me, the reliability of my backup is vital, so therefore there are 2 main points of this product that I feel I have to bring to light:When medium pressure is applied to the centre of the hard drive, the plastic flexes inwards, now, of course this contains the spinning HDD, so that is something to note. However, with real world usage, i’ve found that I only use the hard drive while it's sat on a surface, so this issue only exists when the drive is in transit (e.g. in your bag). Although i have never treated this hard drive with particular 'care' and by that I mean I sling it in my backpack and then throw my backpack in the car, or on the train etc, and it’s held up completely fine so far.Next, is the USB 3.0 male/female socket on the hard drive. Like many hard drive enclosure sockets it’s flimsy, and that worries me, because if the hard drive were to move vertically for any reason, it’s likely the usb 3.0 connector would snap inside the female socket on the HD. Although the only way around this is if you were to get a thunderbolt hard drive such as the LaCie Rugged 2TB Thunderbolt & USB 3.0 Portable 2.5 inch External Hard Drive for PC and Mac and that's roughly £100 more expensive...--- Ergonomics ---It’s incredibly easy to connect the USB 3.0 cable to the hard drive. However I couldn’t figure out how to use/program the “backup” button on top of the hard drive, and to this day, still haven’t used it…mostly because I don’t know how I would even if I wanted to. If i’m honest i’m just happy nothing happens if it’s accidentally pressed while connected to my laptop.--- Conclusion ---If you’re going to be travelling with it, I wouldn’t recommend using this external hard drive for holding important single copy documents. If you do wish to do so (like me), always make sure the USB 3.0 cable is detached from the device prior to transport, and the HD is not going to be put under any heavy loads while in your bag (e.g. I recommend putting it at the top of your bag, or inside it’s own hard case). Although as mentioned above, I have been using this drive for 4 months for heavy design and cad work and it still has yet to fail me in any way. It really is great value for money, and if you're looking at purchasing it, one can assume you value your budget slightly more than file security.

Obviously it has a lot of storage; It easily stores reams of data from dvd and music and writing, as well as having enough room to backup my Macbook Pro. It is tough and sturdy as described in the name, able to withstand punishment, and has plenty of room left to use even after a recent clearout meant taking two or three days to upload information onto it.However, using it on a Mac was initially confusing and frustrating. The hard drive is not configured to Mac's and so needs to be wiped by the Mac itself (I used it as a backup for the Mac, meaning the Mac reformatted it) before it can be used as a storage unit.Worse was the fact that the instructions were very unhelpful on this. There was no mention of having to configure the drive or in fact that there would be any problem or issues with a Mac computer at all, which only delayed the process of backing up at an important time. I spent a good hour or two looking for instructions on this problem with no success. It was in the end a simple fix but lack of instructions was a massive frustration. This though is a pretty minor quibble; if I had used the backup system in the first place then there would have been no problems with the storage. As with any big terabyte drive it should still be used carefully in spite of it's boasts. But obviously having a terabyte backup drive which is protected against damage can be a huge deal. Big hard drives can be known to break with a simple drop to the floor, losing a lot of data as a result. Having something secure like that isn't just very comforting, it edges the drive ahead of competitors. It makes the data secure in itself.Hard drives will always have problems. Such a large amount of data is expensive and is easily lost even by well protected hard drives such as this, as various reviews below might testify. Still, that extra layer of protection is vital in situations where otherwise the hard drive might be damaged or the data destroyed; something which is vital to many companies. It gets a four out of ten for bring the storage space required, for being sturdy and for it's storage. It loses a point because it was niggly to install and get working in the first place, and had unhelpful instructions to exacerbate this problem. For someone new to a hard drive this was an unwelcome start, but it does what it says on the tin, which is more then forgivable.

It's fair to say that I've had a great number of external hard drives over the years - all of which one way or another have ended up in the great removable media cemetery. One was run over, one (somehow) found its way into the washing machine, one or two were dropped, and more than a few gave up the ghost themselves. Therefore recently I was in the market for my latest "investment" in an external hard drive, and after some research I opted for this Transcend Portable Drive.Features of this drive include a beefy one terabyte capacity, an internal hard drive suspension damper along with shock resistance (military graded) to protect your data from knocks and drops,a three year Warranty and a USB 3.0 connection (it is backward compatible). On the surface the drive looks impressive down to its padding and green "run faster" strip. As it is based on the 2.5" form factor it is pretty small and very easy to carry around either in your pocket or a carry case. Build quality is high and looks very modern. In terms of performance the drive offers very good read and write speed. Using the drive on USB3.0 it doesn't appear to be any faster (or slower) than previous drives I've used, however when using the hard drive on my laptop (with the older USB2.0 connection) the drive is very fast when compared to other drives I've used in the past.I'm not a big fan of the one touch backup and backup software that a lot of drives such as this Transcend are offering. I much prefer to format the drive on arrival to remove the software and then simply drag and drop any and all data I want to back up to the drive. I'm sure that some users may like using the software included and it does have the advantage of backing up as you go, however it isn't for me.One minor flaw is that the included USB data cable is rather short; it doesn't reach from the back of my computer to my desk. This can be solved easily by splashing out on an extension cable (which costs a few pounds). The short cable can also be an advantage when used as a portable drive or when used on a laptop. All this and more for a little over fifty pounds seems almost too good to be true doesn't it? In reality however this is a great drive that lives up to the hype and delivers on what it promises. If you're looking for an external hard drive you'll be hard beat to beat this one.

This Hard disk has so far done everything I have thrown at itIt's primary use is in my car to store all my Mp3's to plug in to my Car stereo , I love the fact that I can have all my Music catalogue with me in the car and choose any track I want with out having to cart around loads of CD's with me.Hard disk and cars are not the best mix as they are not supposed to be bounced around when operated, speed bumps and potholes and general road conditions make even the most basic car journey a punishing ride for a hard drive leading to damage then failure. So far I have not had any problems as the shock resistance seem to be doing its job perfectly even on the bumpiest of journeys. As I stated this is my primary use,my secondary use is as a backup for my home computer, Tablet and phone and digital camera.I have setup the backup software to update when the hard drive is plugged in, As well as my weekly backup I can also make a backup when I'm saving any new mp3's for my media player.Storing the backup in my car means that if God forbid I get broken into or a house fire occurs means that I my backup will be safe away from the house (how many of you backup then leave your backup right next to your computer?)I do on occasion do computer repairs for friends and wherever possible I always like to make a backup before making changes, the 1TB disk size is plenty enough space for my needs and unless your storing movie clips will be near impossible to fill up.

Failed after three months. Went into a permanent tail spin while transferring data from a PC and wouldn't respond to any of the usual Windows Task Manager instructions. After forcing a disconnection it wouldn't work again on any of the three PCs I tried. This was bought to give me a secure backup for photos on a trip to the Galapagos Isles and it has failed 8 days before I go!!UpdateAmazon wouldn't replace the HDD because I had had it for more than 28 days so I had to spend another £50 on an alternative, not a Transcend.. When I returned from my trip and looked at my recent reviews I found a comment from Transcend asking me to get in touch and return the item for replacement under warantee.Customer service was excellent and replacement was quite fast. I now have a brand new, fully functional 1TB backup HDD. I'll reserve final judgement but in the interim I can't fault Transcend's service.2nd updateI've now used this over the summer and have no complaints. It does what it says on the tin; connects quickly; fast transfers to PCS and laptops which have a proper USB 3 facility, and no failures or data corruption. So I've raised my rating to 4 stars; pretty about the initial failure but Transcend did respond superbly.

I had pondered on buying one of these for a couple of days and so when i saw it on offer at a reduced price i ordered it and it has proved to be one of the best buys i have made, it is compact and lightweight with a nice non slip rubberised cover that also doubles as a shock protector, this is in addition to the plastic shockcase and the drive suspension system that makes this a very durable driveit was up and running as soon as Windows installed the driver, i then formatted it to NTFS and it was ready to use, the supplied Transcend formatting tool took only seconds to complete and i was then left with 937 GB of free space to play withi created a 50GB encrypted container which again was verystraight forward, then in order to try out the backup utility i made a folder on the drive and backed up my D:/ to it, this took no time at all and i now have a full backup of all my stored software and files etcthis is a very good drive that comes with a suite of free utilities to backup, encrypt ,recover files etc, it takes up very little space and is totally quiet in operation, i cannot recommend this drive highly enough and i would certainly buy it again.

I purchased the 1TB version of this product after already owning the 2TB version as I required an additional hard drive for backups. The product arrived in a large cardboard box which contained the hard drive in a commercial box.The product description on Amazon is very accurate.Pros:* The physical size of the hard drive is very small which makes it extremely portable.* The rubber sides of the portable hard drive makes it shockproof and protects it from any scratches. Your data will definitely be safe.* The one click backup button on the hard drive makes backups very easy and simple. The transfers are also very fast thanks to the USB3 connection.Cons:* I personally think that this product may be a little bit pricy when compared to others on the market. However, considering I decided to get another one of these hard drives after already owning one, they are worth it.To conclude, this product would be a very worthwhile investment! I would recommend it to anyone and would also recommend purchasing a case for it to protect the ports and carry the cable.

Bought as an additional backup for my extremly valuable photo images. Current thinking in many photography circles is to backup to at least 2 or 3 seperate external drives of different manufacture and to store them in different locations. Paranoid? It may appear so until the worst happens and years of irreplaceable images are lost when a hard drive fails or is stolen, or as happened to me recently, a laptop returned to the manufacturer for a warranty repair was returned with the hard drive wiped! Thank goodness I backup my data. This drive was delivered next day by Amazon and put immediately into use. Fast operation using USB3 quickly copying over 200gb of photo images from my computer.I bought the 1Tb version and so have plenty of space for future use.Seems to be of good construction with rubberised outer shell. Ive not tested its drop resistance and hopefully never will, but, it is reassuring to know it is tested to US military standards when my valuable images are stored on it.

hard drives will give you heart-ache at least once in your life. I know I've had my share. but the Transcend 2.5 is not a heart-breaker; it doesn't plead for affection or work hard to be loved. this is one hard drive you can enjoy tonight and still respect - and rely on - many years later.I bought my first Transcend hard-drive 2 years ago (the 1TB version). my hobby is DJing, so I needed some reliable hard-drives to store an extensive vinyl rip collection in FLAC format. I have collected 8 of these hard drives over the years - x6 2TB drives and x2 1TB drives. so far, I have not experienced a single drive failure. no data loss, no funny business, no tears. I have put these drives under serious pressure.in a club environment, they can withstand the magnetism and sound pressure of very powerful speakers. this hard drive can read/write non-stop. I make large file transfers and backups on a daily basis, for years, without any problems. I can't recommend these enough!

Overall, no problems at all, next day delivery, product was in original packaging, exactly as describe. At first i thought by "this doesn't come with the case" it mean the rubber outside of the product itself, however, just to clarify you get exactly whats in the pictures. I thought 1TB would be too much but its worth it for the price and did come in handy. Works perfect on my Macbook Pro. Just plugged it in and worked straight away, no issues using it on other computers and windows as well as my laptop. Product itself looks great, stylish good small size and is packaged nicely. Durable, not had any problems with dropping it and no damage at all.Overall benefits:- Works for Mac and windows-Durable shock proof design- Stylish smart appearance- Good size- Easy to use and great storagedisadvantages:- I'm yet to think of any, just I'd got this for Uni and 1TB is handier than smaller sizes (something i was skeptical about) so go for the 1TB

I have had the 1TB Transcend model for just over a week now and I am pleased with it.- Plug and play install: just plug it in via USB and Windows 7 does the rest for you. It takes less than a minute.- Although it comes as FAT32, it has a preinstalled program on it that reformats it into NTFS for you in less than one minute.- Silent: makes no noise whatsoever.- Does not get hot: only mildly warm.- The cable is approximately 40cm long. This is fine for what I need it for.One slight criticism concerns the use of another USB 3.0 device alongside this one. I have two USB 3.0 ports on my PC and I plugged the transcend hard drive into one of them. In the other port, I had a wireless USB keyboard/mouse.Unfortunately when the transcend hard drive is in use, the mouse/keyboard freezes for a few seconds. This became so inconvenient that I had to transfer the mouse/keyboard to a USB 2.0 port. This might be more of a problem for some.

I thought I'd wait a while until I posted a review on this because one of the key things about hard drives is reliability. I have had this hard drive for 1 year and 3 months and it is still preforming as it was when I plugged it in for the first time.I have drop tested this hard drive myself just to test the theory. And it hasn't affected it's performance at all. Usually this hard drive sit's on top of my PC running a daily backup, but I have also gone through periods where I would take this hard drive out of my house and travel around with it. As I have said, there have been no issues for me.Speed-wise it's pretty quick.Sure it's not as quick as an SSD but for a mechanical hard drive it's a clear step a head compared to USB 2.0.It's powered just of the USB cable which is ideal as long as you have a powered USB port to plug it into. The cable is a little short if you want to have it on your desk, but it's fine for me.

I bought this product to replace my old external hard drive. My old hard drive is now 10 years old, had 500GB and required a power supply. This product is a modern revelation to me. I have it about half full and it does not seem to have any problems running slowly or taking time to open files. It also does not require an external power source, it just runs from the power of the computer or laptop it is plugged into.I utilise mine plugged into my Xbox One as a media storage for music, pictures and video. I have not found a computer that has struggled to connect to it.In terms of the Military-Grade Shock Resistance aspect, I have taken it on a couple of road trips where it has just been dumped in my bag as have found no problems with it.I haven't put it through any serious knocks, but for day to day use for the average Joe it works great.

I got this drive on a lightening deal so it was at a very good price, although I still wouldn't be disappointed had I paid a little more.Positives:+ Looks good - matte soft touch finish, perfect colour scheme for my intended use with an Xbox One+ Shock Proof - decent level of protection against knocks/drops+ Speed - Tested on my PC this drive averages 80-90MB/s and peaked at 150Mb/s over USB 3, very good performance for a 5400RPM drive.+ Quiet - Being 5400RPM the drive barely makes any noise when in useNegatives:- Uses a non standard cable - Pretty common but it would be nice if it used Micro USB or USB-C, most people will have a few spares knocking about if the cable does break.- Cable length - only around 15-20cm,not a big deal but could be annoying if you want to use it on a desktop with no free front USB ports.

Dropping a portable hard drive and rendering it unusable without a full back up of all the data is the nightmare situation I found myself in.Lesson learnt, I purchased the Transcend drive as the portable hard drive of choice to carry around for work as this provides the durability and a safety factor that I need when using a hard drive on the go.The case is well made and comes with a handy set off software options that help with backing up data from all the sources I use. This device comes with a short usb lead, which is more than enough to allow for use in the front of a desktop pc or laptop, but if you need to access the back of a desktop pc while at work the lead may prove to be a littleshort.Tip - buy yourself a carry case for this device as makes the drive and cable a lot easier to carry around.
