I have now bought three of these drives over the last two years, and have several friends who have bought them on my recommendation. The protective casing ensures that when the drive is accidentally dropped it does not break. I have a 16 year old son who still hasn't managed to break one of these after a year and a colleague who is still using the 500GB version he bought 5 years ago which he confesses to having dropped several times over the years.Other Ext HD's I have used in the past have always had an issue with breaking when accidentally dropped, but the rubberised protective case on these drives provides excellent protection. The transfer speed of USB 3 is as fast as you would expect andI use these drives for storing and running up to 6 virtual machines on from my laptop and they are more than adequate for this heavy data transfer load. The only minor issue is the shortness of the built in rubberised USB connector cable as this can sometimes cause the drive to disconnect when plugged in and laid on the desk next to a laptop, however this is easily fixed by using a standard USB extension cable so don't let that put you off.Whilst these drives are a little more expensive than other models the robustness and reliability will end up saving you money over time.If your after a reliable, robust high performance external portable hard drive then get one of these.

After many years of experiences with many external discs, the Freecom Tough Drive proved to be the toughest of them all ;) True, I did not try other tough drives (e.g. from Toshiba and others), so I can only compare with the "normal", "sensitive" portable discs. With these disks my basic problem were the cables and/or the mini USB ports, which sooner or later stopped functioning after approximatelly a year of regular use.I used previous version of Tough Drive (250 Gb), and only now after many (5+ ?) years of regular use, including the fieldwork, trekking, few 1 m drops and similar it started to have some problems with the reading / writting performance. Before I format it (maybe it will solve the problem - but even if not,it served long enough ;), I have bought the new, bigger and faster one (1 Tb, USB 3), and so far it functions perfectly.I recommend it!

I've just bought another one of these drives. I bought it due to the cable. Yes it's a bit short but it's very stable. A lot more stable than a mini usb port. The drive that packed up was an extreme tough drive. I see that Freecom doesn't do them anymore so that says it all. With regards to a mini usb connection. I've got a WD 1TB with a min usb drive. The connection broke after a year of daily use thus I've just bought my 5th Freecom Tough Drive.Would high recommend these drives as they are very tough and the cable is very stable and with the other 4 Tough Drives I've had for about 6 years. I've taken them around the world and they are still going strong.Like many drives the older ones are just a bit too small these days but excellent Disaster Recovery and daily commute drives.

I bought this because I own an older Toughdrive (USB 2.0), which I am very happy with. This one delivers significantly faster speeds, as is to be expected, and the make feels just as pleasant and robust as the old one. But: make sure your USB ports match the power requirements! On my computers, only few ports make this drive work, even some which are supposedly USB 3.0 don't and seem not to deliver enough power. Surprisingly, one computer can access it even on (some of its) USB 2.0 ports, 'seems to deliver a bit more power on these than it should... It's not a driver issue, it is power: on some ports, the drive won't even spin up, on others the light just goes into pulsing ("switched off").

excellent product for essential backup of important documents and transfers between PCs. It will even speed up your computer! Get one now.... I love this product!Freecom ToughDrive 2.5" 500GB USB 3.0 Writing a book or saving photos then you worry about losing your work, this is what you need for piece of mind and it is worth every penny. It is drop proof- though don't try it - having that extra safety is great, and the light in the link tells you when to disconnet it or not, so clever, but make sure you treat it right and this will give you a lieftime of backup for important documents that might be lost if your PC or labtop is stolen. get one now- that is my humble opinion. Years ago, I bought the 80-GB tough drive, a few years ago I bought the 500-GB tough drive,. and a few months back I bought the 1-TB USB-3 tough drive. The built in cable is nice when you forget an extender, but I always try to carry/use an extender to save on wear and tear ... so far they have always performed perfectly for me ... the 1TB carries about 570GB of data currently; laptop backups (clonezillas) and dvd backups ... I use clonezilla (from a usb boot stick) to save the windows partition and mirrim (under windows) to save / backup the data partition.. both work pretty fast and the tough drives have never given me any problems.

the drive is good. It's compact and does not weigh much. The only thing is that it's not configured properly and this is a techie thing that most people cant do on their own. Basically it's still configured to FAT 32 which is the older style and allows a maximum of 2.2gb files, then it blocks itself so your backup is never complete. You need to configure it to NTFS which is more modern and copies bigger files. Of course I am not techie, I found all this out by having to ring my own techie person, so it costs me money - I could have purchased another drive for the same price. Hope someone else can make use of this information though.

Really, really good portable HDD. I have deployed all over the world with the military and have gone through more HDDs than you can shake a stick at because they've either overheated or just broken. This bad boy has been through 3 tours of Afghanistan, been dropped countless times, yet still keeps spinning. Absolutely great. I would give it 5 stars if it wasn't for the exceptionally short USB 3.0 cable attachment (which is so small it's actually pointless). Bought with a 2m USB 3.0 extender cable and it works fine.Highly recommend if you're like me and do a lot of travelling. Great product.

I've owned a number of these drives, always reliable and durable. This one is used to boost the tiny memory of the MacBook Air. So it gets lots of use swapping large video files. We use these drives at work to backup our laptops and have doe for years.Update Dec 2013 - A couple of reviews commented that the USB connector on the Toughdrive is a weak point, and 2 weeks before the 12 month warranty expired this connection failed. I lost all the data on the device - happily I always have a back up of my backup so not too much of a pain. Amazon replaced the device immediately, no hassle.

Already own 320GB and an earlier 1TB Tough Drive both of which are USB 2.0 versions. This being a 1TB USB 2.0/3.0 version. Only downside with this purchase was it did not come with a USB extension cable which my previous Tough Drives had included, somewhat perplexed as to why Freecom had not included the extension cable as it is essential, fortunately I have two spare ones from my previous purchases. Would recommend the Tough Drive, I have dropped my 320GB numerous times without any damage or lose of data, and they very much "Kiddie" proof as far as I'm concerned.

This is my third tough drive, and I bought this one to back up my documents, but I wanted to encrypt the drive so the documents were secure. This drive comes with an encryption software which is very effective. I know some people don't like the short USB lead, but it is convenient and as I don't use it frequently, it does not concern me. So far none of the three drives have failed.I did not give it five because it is slow to connect, and sometimes you have to reconnect it for the drive to be recognised, but again as an infrequent user, this is not a problem.

Another great product from Freecom. Just plug it in with the nice tidy usb connector, and start dragging stuff over. No software to install Stuff copies at a rate of about 1GB per minute. If you have trouble ejecting it using 'safely remove hardware', it's most likely the crypserve.exe. Just open task manager, click on the processes tab, and end the crypserve.exe process. It'll start up again when you restart your computer. Having it stopped for a while doesn't seem to cause any problems. Once crypserv is stopped, you should be able to eject.

No disappointment here... Really nice unit, great size, feels solid and tough. The great feature of an on-board USB is both its USP and its downfall. So convenient having it there, however if you’re going to do it then for @#$% sake do it properly. It’s way too short and tight so I’ve had issues of it popping out during a large transfer.Would love it give it 5 stars but lost the one for the above.Next revision I expect it would be fixed and finally we would have a 1TB fast external tough drive for people on the go.Yup!Alan

Secure and robust. The built-in USB connector is everything you could expect, but not suitable for repeatedly hanging the disk from a high-up USB port.A note of configuration. The setup insists you keep part of the disk unencrypted. The minimum is 100mb I think. This is a great place to put the files which run the password input dialog, so you're not dependent on having these programs on a hard disk. Make a separate copy of the supplied files before you start configuring the drive.

High quality, great price, robust and easy to use. The design is such that you don't need a case but for travel further a field I thought I would purchase one but the 2.5" cases do not fit due to the curved design of the product - ignore the Amazon suggestion on the accompanying products therefore! I didn't realise I could have purchased a higher spreed one as I bought when searching on my mobile, so just to highlight also the two speed options available when purchasing also
