For basic external storage, this is a good, even great, disk well recommended by The Wirecutter (a very good source of advice) and is the latest generation of a product live I already own and trust. Seagate have backup software for both Mac and PC. On Mac, you can use it as a host for the Time Machine functionality. There's even some cloud cleverness made available. I didn't buy this for any of that... but, before I get there...ALL MAC USERS Despite claiming to be Mac friendly, this disk is formatted using the Windows filing system (NTFS). Macs can read this but not write to it. You MUST reformat it to be useful to you.• Open an app 'Disk Utility' that is installed on your computer.• In the left column, you will see "Seagate Backup Plus Drive". Right click it and 'Erase...'.• In the dialogue window, change the name if you want to and use the 'Format:' drop down to select 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' then click erase. Ignore the 'Security Options...' because the disk came blank. Now it's usable for backup applications, Time Machine etc.Getting geeky now...Everything that follows is for Mac users wanting a BOOTABLE backup. A bootable backup is one where you can take the backup disk and plug it into any recent Mac and boot from it as if you were running your own machine at the moment you did the backup. This might get you past a disk failure, theft or some other catastrophic problem.I use a multi-layered approach to data preserving my data: cloud sync services (OneDrive / Dropbox / Creative Cloud etc) for data in real time & cross device sync; Time Machine for changes / versions available locally; and, finally, point in time bootable backups that might save massive rebuilding exercises and are a catchall safety net. I bought a pair of these disks for that last layer of defence - bootable backups - and use SuperDuper (but shifting to Carbon Copy Cloner) to create them.Out of the box, the disks were partitioned using FDisk (Microsoft again) which enables use on Windows and Mac. This partition type will not boot on Macs and is incompatible with a plan to use bootable backups. Previous to macOS High Sierra (10.13), Mac's 'Disk Utility' allowed a partition map to be changed when erasing a disk. This is no longer available so you'll need to do some terminal-fu if you want to use it with either SuperDuper or CCC. I can't post a link to it (Amazon's rules) but there is a great guide on what to do if you search for "Disk Management From the Command-Line, Part 2".Also, with High Sierra the new disk formatting system AFPS has arrived (except if you have an iMac with a Fusion Disk). This changes the rules on how data is stored (you can have more logical data than the drive has physical capacity for). Read the blogs at ShirtPocket (who make SuperDuper) and Bombich (who make CCC) (again, my first draft was refused for link gin directly). A few things I have learnt...• SuperDuper cannot read APFS yet. CCC can appear to have down extensive testing.• For maximum compatibility, it's probably better not to format the external disk to APFS. High Sierra writes a firmware change to read APFS. If your disk is APFS and you try to use it on a Mac that hasn't moved to High Sierra, it won't boot.On that last point, I'm testing if a High Sierra iMac which cannot itself use APFS can boot an APFS disk. I will update the review.

My daughter and I had that discussion last evening. She is in the "Mac World"; poor old dad stodgily plods along in the Windows based systems. Should one back up all one's precious files in "the cloud" or on a hard drive? Being a belt and suspenders sort of guy, I argued that the "vs." should be removed, replaced by an "and." And with the continued improvements in technology, both are readily viable solutions. Trust, if you will, some provider to operate and maintain "the cloud" securely for you, but also verify that you have the files available, even if the Internet is not, say in the Gila Wilderness. Of course, as my daughter perceptively noted, why would you want to look at your "files" in the Gila Wilderness?Seagate has produced a wonderful "belt and suspenders" type of external hard drive. First of all, although designed for the Mac World, with minor effort, it also can be configured to work with the Windows based systems. Please note the "also," meaning that it will function with both systems. It comes with a USB cable that will work with both the newer (and naturally faster) USB 3.0 ports as well as the older USB 2.0 ports. If you have a Mac, as the name of the product implies, simply pop it out of the box (and pry it out of the plastic), plug it in, and it works. If you have a Windows based system, you need to look at the directions, (conveniently printed in 327 languages- OK, I exaggerate slightly). You obtain Seagate's URL for the Windows "app," go there, download and install on your Windows system. It is about as straightforward and "foolproof" as possible. It took me a couple of minutes only to load it onto my "Dell Inspiron i3147-3750sLV 11.6-Inch 2 in 1 Convertible Touchscreen Laptop" which I also received via the Vine program. I then verified I could move a picture file from the Laptop to the Seagate hard drive via the USB 3.0 port. Yes, it was "lighting fast." I then attempted to connect the Seagate hard drive to my desk top Windows system, via the USB 2.0 port. It did not recognize the hard drive. So, that is the cautionary point. If you intend to use it for Windows systems, you have to download the app onto each computer you will use - no real problem though, at a couple of minutes per computer. And then I transferred a picture file via the USB 2.0 port - also, very fast.No secret there have been enormous improvements in technology. This drive is probably one one-hundredth the size of the clunky external hard drive I purchased seven years ago, and has a hundred thousand times the capacity. At 2 terabytes (that's a million million bytes), sometimes expressed as 10 to the 12th power, it could be used to store all the files both my daughter and I will ever produce. At a little more than 5 ounces, it is meant to be portable, whether your destination is the Gila Wilderness or the Calanque National Park. 5-stars, plus.

Firstly let me say, i didn't buy this from amazon as I had vouchers for argos i got it there!I now have two of these guys (one grey one blue) the grey one which i have had for almost a year now, which I use for time machine backups. really works well with this no problems so far. I like the little light that lights up on the top left through an etch in the metal cover. one thing I don't like with macs is they don't show disk activity without a download. This is a nice touchI bought the second one because I was looking for a 2gb internal laptop drive, (Do this at your own risk) this item includes the samsung spinpoint M9T, I have seen many youtube videos that show people opening this device, they seem to have had some trouble getting this open using credit cards picks etc, I seem to have been lucky in that i got the metal cover straight off using only my fingernails first time. (i don't really have much in the way of fingernails btw)its then just a case of gently easing the drive out of the plastic bottom, with a screwdriver and then taking off the metallic foil and gently coaxing off the usb3 adaptor, then its a case of putting in the drive to whichever computer as normal. This saves a good deal of money. The drive has the standard sata connectors and the usb 3 adaptor is not soldered to the drive. Before I dismantled the drive i first ran blackmagic disk speed test, This drive runs about 120mbs per second read and write on usb3 so pretty much will not be any faster using usb 2 or 3. I will when I put the disk into my macbook test to see if there is any difference in speed with the drive as a secondary drive in the pc and then update this post. The disk comes formatted as ntfs which can be read by both mac and pc, It comes with backup software (on the drive itself) which allows backup of normal content, social media, and cloud based content. ( personally i stopped using it as its not really useful on mac due to time machine) but it is a simple and quick install.ContentsThe driveuniversal Usb 3 cable ( makes it easy to get another one if one breaks)instructions.Prosslim drive (9mm drive)case is attractiveyou really get 2TB space ( really impressed this is actually 2TB formatted under NTFS most drives lie about the physical space and you end up with a lot less)Good price much cheaper than the samsung M9T on its on.usb 2 and 3ReliablePortableCons,Not really the fastest drive (good for backups though)usb 2 and 3 obtain same speed as drive cannot reach usb2 or 3 speedsAll in all a great drive. go get one

Owner of several Seagate hard drives it has to be said they're coming out with an ever more attractive range of hard drives for consumers, with the drive available in four colours to suit!** Please note that the Amazon listing price on the different colours of this hard drive appear to vary when I checked pricing for different sizes - don't get caught out **12.1mm in depth this back up drive is slim as a biro casing a 2.5 inch hard drive (smaller width that standard 3.5 inch hard drives found inside PCs), powered by the USB and is easily pocketable, if you can excuse the sticky-outy cable you need to carry too.As with most Seagate portable drives it comes with Seagate software loaded on thedrive for Windows and PC: This is great for people looking for a one-stop double-click stop to backing up all their stuff in one.Included in the Seagate software after a login to your social networks is the ability to back up all your Facebook and Flickr photos straight to the drive (say, should your Facebook account get hacked), or you can upload everything straight from the drive meaning all your holiday memories are consolidated somewhere both online and offline.Of course, installation of the branded software is optional, and the fact it's plug and play means once drivers are installed it's good to go and appears as another drive on your desktop to reformat if you wish, then click and drag files on to, simple.A USB3 compatible speed means that transferring all your data is quick if you have a compatible connection on your PC, though it is also compatible with the slower USB2 which is more widely used on older computers. All in all great spare space for anyone with a hard drive clogged up with too many holiday memories, just take heed of the various prices Amazon lists different sizes at!The "professional" issue with the drive is the connection is not USM / SATA compatible but the slim USB3 output. If that means nothing to you, don't worry! If you want a USM connection however I believe the model you want is a Seagate Expansion drive.

The Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB USB 3.0 Portable 2.5 Inch External Hard Drive for PC and Mac was purchased as a replacement for a similar device now dedicated to use with a PVR in order to expand its storage capacity. This will be used with a PC and to move larger amounts of data between several computers and for which a memory stick would be slower in its transfers and offer far less capacity.Seagate hard drives of various capacities, models, ages and formats are in current and concurrent use for several purposes. Certain models are also used in RAID arrays in daily use and have been found to be generally reliable. Seagate was also one of the earliest brands of drive in use and they have absorbed many of their once competing brands.A feature of this model is the included backup software; it is not a fully-featured system solution but a data only, limited functionality package intended to assist with photos, music tracks, movie clips and such. However, its functionality is also limited in that it will overwrite today whatever you backed up last week, last month etc. The software may work for some, but not for me.This is a fully self-powered unit with no need for an external PSU. It is therefore complete portable and could be easily carried in a shirt or trouser pocket without adding much weight or bulk. The cable is quite short, only about 45cm or 18 inches - they are rarely more than 0.5m with this type of drive - but a short 0.5m extension cable could be used for added convenience if or when essential. A sleeve or case would be useful for added protection against falls and scratching but there are many third-party accessories that could be used. There was no hesitation in selecting either the brand or model for the intended task and, like others, it should continue to serve well into the future, although without using the backup software.

The best thing about this drive is its size. From the pictures I expected something bigger, but this is the same sort of size as some larger smartphones. It's easily pocketed and incredibly convenient. It's got a very decent read-and-write speed (haven't tested with actual figures, sorry), considering that its only power source is through the USB3 cable- there's no other way of powering it.The blue metallic colour is a little bit unusual, I don't see it matching many PC colour schemes- it looks more like shiny car paint than a normal IT colour. It's fairly nice though, so as long as you're not planning some sort of colour-sensitive feng-shui based desk around it,you won't complain. The backup software that's included is surprisingly OK. Previous drives I've had have come bundled with backup software that has been an appalling victory of style over content, and completely useless for actually backing things up- that's why I bought myself PureSync, from Jumping Bytes software, to do the job properly. This Seagate Dashboard system is more easy-to-use and more advanced than I expected. To be honest I'll probably still use PureSync, but if you don't already have backup software, the included Seagate offering is definitely better than nothing- it's definitely worth registering, at least. This is especially true if you're a big social networker, as the Facebook interaction is something I've not seen before. The USB3 cable provided is very short. Depending on where you'll want to keep it, you might want to get yourself a longer cable (for example AmazonBasics USB Cable - 3.0 A Male to Micro B 1.8 m).Another great plus about this drive is that it's so small even when packaged up that it will drop through your letterbox when it's delivered! If you're after a drive for portability and convenience, this should do the job very nicely indeed.

My setup Mobo M5A7Bl-M, Quad Core 8mb3.40 Phenon 11x4 965 CPU, 16 Gig DDR3 Ram, Win 7 64bit,AMD Radeon Dh600 series, PSU ATX 12v P4 750w.Pluged in the drive and it booted up fine within 4 seconds and ready for use. There is a white LED on top of the drive indicating its on and there is no power adaptor to worry about it powers from the PCs USB 3.0 socket (it can also work with USB 2.0 but slower and firewire and Thunderbird). The cable that comes with the kit is so small about 6" that you will either have to buy a longer one or plug it in and leave it on top of your PC as long as its not a hot spot otherwise could overheat (no problem if your using a laptop though)the casing is a bit plasticly and not very sturdy but its mainly to be used for a laptop anyway. If you do use if for a desktop buy some rubber feet or longer cable. You can get hold of a USB extention cable quite cheap on Amazon. Before you can use Backup plus you have to register it by inputting the serial number found on the drive or package and adding your name, country, and email address, it dosen't ask you for you home address or phone. Backup plus comes on the hard drive itself and no backup disc, funny really if you lose the data on the drive then you can't use it to backup so might be good idea to burn a CD copy and put it somewhere safe incase you need it later. It interacts with Facebook, Flicker and You Tube. You get 4 video tutors to help you get to grips withBackup plus but its pretty user friendly and not hard to work out. It will backup certain files, or all files but it dosen't back up the operating system so if you had a problem with this you have to reinstall the OS then use backup plus to restore the rest. A great little back up drive you can put in your coat pocket as its the same size and thickness as an average notebook and is incredibly light.

I was in need of a large capacity portable drive to use as backups and found the 4TB Backup Plus from Seagate. It worked after connecting it to the laptop and I began work on it. I removed all of the preloaded automated rubbish and encrypted the whole drive with Truecrypt. Having to rely on something automated to pack away valuable data into storage is foreign to me. Drag and drop is the way forward. I use Windows 7/10 OS. Over an hour later from my break, 257GB was successfully transferred without a hitch.I've learned of the disadvantages of drives configured to RAID 0 as it allows for total data loss if one of the two internal drives fails. With that in mind,I've done some research into the 2 similar offerings from Seagate before purchasing. I found that the "Backup Plus 4TB" which is the one I brought has 1 ONE internal 4tb drive inside. The other version which is called "Backup Plus FAST 4TB" has 2 Samsung drives inside and is configured to RAID 0, hence why the "Backup Plus FAST 4TB Portable" is more expensive than the "Backup Plus 4TB Portable".See here for price comparison and spec;http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-STDA4000200-Backup-portable-external/dp/B00IGSB2ZK....and Google search "Seagate Review: Hands-On With the 4TB Backup Plus Portable Hard Drive With Lyve Integration" and its a site called MacRumors. There it'll tell you about the comparisons between the two 4tb 2.5" Portable offerings from Seagate. My only complaint about this drive is there are no rubber feet on it. Its actually quite annoying how incredibly slippery they are and they can easily they can slide off the table for example, if you're not careful. Take extra care with these on smooth surfaces. Lucky I have some Blu-Tack laying around. They work great with these drives.

Absolutely perfect.I bought one of these to replace my PS4 500GB hard drive with.I can confirm these work a treat in a PS4. I am not in the slightest bit techy, but following one of the many installation guides available by Googling (I think I used the first one from Game FAQ's users) was very easy indeed. Be warned, it is very difficult to remove the outer casing without tools, but if you don't need the casing and don't mind chipping it, that's fine. It took me at least 15 minutes to remove the casing with my fingernails (or what I have that could class as parts of fingernails :P) and the casing bends when you remove it.It took me 4 months and hardly a large number of games to max my PS4's 500gb hard drive,so this 2TB drive was a welcome addition!Don't quote me as being law or scripture, but in my personal experience:- This works perfectly with PS4s without issue.- I had written confirmation (and you can see it online via various sites, including Sony's) that the replacement does not void your warranty.- The installation is very easy to do.- I had written confirmation that if you ever need a Sony repair on your PS4, you absolutely MUST replace the 500GB hard drive and take this 2TB one out before sending your console. Although replacing the hard drive does not void your warranty, if you do ever need a repair, you must send the console in the way it was bought - unless you are authorised to do so. That may seem daft, but just be warned beforehand - don't send your console in with the new hard drive or they may send it back unfixed.

This drive is quite small, just slightly thicker than Seagate's own Slim STCD drives. The on-going question about the lack of an internal SATA connection IS worth mentioning but in practice this will affect only a tiny fraction of potential users. If you need a 2.5" SATA then there are cheaper ways to get one. In the past I have been thankful for the easily accessible SATA connection to be found at the back of recent Seagate drives. So, judging this drive on its merits solely as external backup, then how does it do? Fine, if nothing special. Traditional external hard drives (as opposed to SSD drives) are pretty much commodity items by this stage so you're looking for reliability and software to distinguish them.Reliability is a hard thing to judge but Seagate didn't get the reputation they have by accident. So that leaves the software. Seagate have taken to including video tutorials on there last many drives and it's a very user-friendly introduction, though entirely unnecessary if you remotely know what you're doing. The actual back-up software that Seagate are now packaging has been refined over the last couple of years and I have to admit it's getting to the point where it's not bad. They've had a focus on social media for years, which is quaint, but the actual backup software is now very usable. You can, of course, completely ignore the bundled software, delete it off the drive and just treat it as dumb storage, or integrate it into your existing backup program.Solid, pocketable drive that does the job.

The best thing about USB hard drives such as this one is their sheer portability. It's so easy to carry mountains of photographs, videos, films etc using these compact and quiet memory banks that I now have a number of them in various sizes and brands. The older ones were much smaller in capacity but larger physically - I've just compared this model with an older Seagate drive that I have. That one was a little bit bigger and weighed 30g more (approximately half of a Mars bar) but held just 320GB. My main laptop has 1.2TB of hard drive space and this little Seagate drive means that I can comfortably copy everything over to it as a back-up or to share my files with friends and family.Transfer speeds seem to be good for a drive like this thanks to the USB 3.0 connector, and compare very favourably with other drives I've tested. Software installation is not necessary - you just plug it in and in seconds it's ready to use. It does come complete with some Seagate software pre-loaded on it but you're not forced to use it. I would have liked the drive to come with a storage pouch but instead I'm using the case of a small camera to keep it safe. Although it's pretty tough the life of an external hard drive can be severely shortened by rough treatment so it's always worth protecting them from knocks. I have no real complaints about this Seagate external hard drive. It works without a separate power supply, is very quiet in operation, connects easily and performs well - it's excellent!

The main reason for my purchase of the Seagate Backup Plus Slim HDD, is as a backup facility for my PC and laptop. The storage device is smaller and lighter than I expected (a good thing!) and I've backed up 2 devices, running Windows 10, leaving 500GB of space free. I have a fair number of photo and music files and have the sneaky feeling that the 2TB version may have been a better long term purchase for my needs. However, that's down to individual requirements, of course. The backups took some 2-4 hours per device using a USB 2 connection. The device works on the much faster USB 3 connection but is backwards compatible for older computers like mine.Online reviews had some negative reports on all makes of external HDD drives that I looked at - faulty units, viruses, user error - who knows? In the end I went for the Seagate HDD, as it generally received a large number of favourable reviews, is a recognised brand, and comes with a 2 year warranty. I have used a small Iomega branded unit (storage is now too small) for years without any issues. It is possible to purchase plans from Seagate that ensure the recovery of data from damaged or virus infected drives.I followed the quick start guide and had the unit up and running without difficulty, although my laptop took 3 attempts to find the drive but the PC recognised it first time. There is no software included - everything is done on-line.Overall, I am very happy with my purchase.

I have been looking for a drive like this for some time as I wanted something that was good for travel but would also offer a large storage capacity and this drive was the perfect fit. The huge 4tb capacity coupled with the relatively small size is amazing and the fact that it requires no additional power supply unlike it larger desktop equivalent makes it an ideal travel companion. The speed of the drive over USB 3.0 is also impressive. It operates just as fast as my other USB 3.0 external drives with speeds that often exceed 100MB/s but I expect it could perform even better on a more modern PC.Although there is nothing particularly special about the design and build of the casing of the drive,it does feel solid and well made and it operates almost silently.Sadly I am only using the drive for drag and drop purposes so I have not tested the backup software that is provided by seagate, but from what I have read elsewhere it works well. One thing to think about when buying a drive like this is that HDD's are very sensitive to knocks and vibration, so a portable 4tb drives leaves you open to the potential of huge data loss. Because of this would advise anyone to make sure they have a backup of important data, especially if you intend to use the drive on the go where it is more likely to get damaged. All in all an excellent drive, which has so far performed very well.Highly recommended

When the box dropped through my letterbox(!) I looked at it and thought; that can't possibly be the hard drive, but I couldn't think of anything else I'd ordered that it could be. On opening the packaging and seeing it was the external HDD I'd ordered I was blown away at how small the box inside was, then even moreso when actually getting the HDD out; it's the size of a mobile phone! Admittedly the product dimensions are listed on the site, it's just I hadn't looked at them. This is the fourteenth Seagate external HDD I now own (incidentally, all of them are still working, so I have no problem trusting Seagate HDDs) and it's easily 6+ times smaller than any of the others, hence my amazement.I tried filling it up and the speeds I was getting are around what I'm used to, so no problem for me there as it's doing its job, although being USB 3.0 it will be capable of faster than I was getting seeing as I was only using 2.0 to transfer the files. It also feels very solid and I'd have no worries carrying it around in my pocket, I imagine it could take a few knocks without much of a problem, although I'm not willing to try that out! With physical storage space in mind I can see me getting a lot of these HDDs but I will hold off for now and see how this one fares over the next few months just to make sure that quality hasn't been sacrificed for size and I'll update this review if it has.

Ok, I love this. I got given one as a gift and It's so easy to use (and small and well made) I bought another one for my Dad. No more remembering to manually back everything up, you just plug it in, tell it what to back up (or let it choose everything) and it updates everything continuously any time a file is updated, created / changed etc. Really easy to restore anything as well as you can subsequently choose any version of the files from all the dates they may have been edited since you first backed it up (which is far more useful than you would imagine). Has lots of options on the Seagate dashboard software that you use it from on your pc so you could choose a different back up schedule (weekly, monthly) or just a snapshot of things as they are if you wanted (which is very handy when you are transferring things to a new pc or drive). If you don't want to use the handy software it comes with you can also use it as a normal storage drive. You can also set it to back up automatically to various cloud accounts. It can also back up your social media photos etc although I haven't tried that. I got some free online storage for a set period of time with mine as well although I don't know if they are still doing that. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to back up their on-line life easily with the minimal amount of fuss.
