I bought two of these to use in a Raspberry Pi backup project. Originally I was going to go for a 2TB set. But then I stumbled across these 4TB Seagates for about 77.99. Which worked out an extra tenner for an extra 2TB of space with a known hard drive manufacturer. I thought it was rather a steal. The drives as expected are supplied with everything they need to get them running, in this case, a drive and a USB 3 cable. There is pre-loaded backup software you can use on windows or mac. But these were to be used on Linux so copied the software off in case I feel like using it later, and wiped the drives. They are quite compact as to be expected with a 2.5 but the case does not add much additional size. One of my qualms was the minuscule activity light on these. Which seems to only be white other drives I have used differentiate USB 3 and 2 with different led colours. As per usual with most 2.5 drives there is no need for external power so long as your ports can maintain the 1.5 ampage need for USB 3, otherwise you will need to get a powered hub.The drive spins at 5400rpm which people would scoff at in the past but you have to remember with drives being larger now they store more data in a sector of a drive which means they need to spin less especially if you keep them defragged which Windows 10 pretty much does in the background now which means your drive should be reading sequentially anyway.Testing the drives on CrystalMark they seem to get around 150mb/s read and write sequentially. I compared my results to an internal drive which seemed to get similar results. As I am using mine for backups reading is more important than writing but both results were pleasing. Random read and writes dropped to between 5 and 7mb/s, again as mentioned in the last paragraph, that is the importance of keeping a drive defragged. Stops it needing to spin like a DJ.I formatted one with NTFS as I need it to be readable by Windows and the other using EXT4 as I do not want anything Windows to touch it well not easily anyway both formats went through with ease, I did not expect any problems but I have had a few drives despise certain formats before so I thought it was worth a mention.Overall, this is a very nice piece of hardware and I would highly recommend it to anyone who needs a large amount of storage at a reasonable cost from a reputable hard drive manufacturer.

I recently purchased a laptop for gaming. I've needed an external drive for more space to store my pc games. I wasn't sure if this was going to run games well enough which it does and it really does a great job.The drive performs astonishingly well, used with GTA V and Fortnite they load just as quickly, but bare in mind that this drive only does around 100 or so mb per second which means your games download times could be a bit longer, it's a small sacrifice, but transferring huge files from your pc could take some time.It was easier for me to re-download my games as transferring the huge files would take allot longer. To note that when using Steam it takes longer to download because Steam likes to make sure there is enough space by creating it...Download from anywhere else and it performs. The cable provided in my opinion is needlessly short and could be longer so not to cram near my workspace. I have a longer cable I use and there are no problems with speeds when running games or programs stored on the drive using the longer cable. All in all its working better then expected. I should have gone for 2 terabytes based on the size of some games, but I'll make do with this one. It's a great little drive and good value.I didn't use the software provided, I'm just storing my content like any other drive.

WD My Passport 5Tb external drive - reviewThis Western Digital My Passport 5Tb drive is "pocket" sized. It has a low average access time - about HALF the access time of some drives I tested it against which I bought some years ago. Nevertheless, the average read & write speeds remains almost exactly the same. Strangely though, the instantaneous read & write speeds do seem to fluctuate quite significantly.Bottom line: Would I buy again? This is a large capacity drive for a single platter device, one assumes it is therefore boldly going where none have gone before.I have had a few problems with partitions, and the entire drive, failing to mount. Previously I have been reformatting the drive and re-creating my data - a time consuming pain. However, on the last occasion I went a bit more techy and did a bit of CLI to recover the "iffy" partition. This worked great and only took a little over five minutes. Big tick for the geeky approach!TBH I think I wish I had waited until this large capacity single platter technology was more established before I had bought it.Still, if you need this capacity (5Tb), or even higher capacity now, and you need to buy today, then this is a handy "little" device in a nice package and at an excellent price.

The item arrived faulty and would not be recognised by any computer. This was confirmed by the manufacturer. Amazon wanted me to take it to a Post Office in the middle of a Pandemic in order to return the faulty item. I am a vulnerable person and will not do that. Would not buy from Amazon again. Terrible customer service. Went instead to manufacturer and they are arranging for it to be picked up from my house, without charge, and replacing it. All a great deal of hassle. Would have expected much better customer service from Amazon. Good product, easy to use, good storage, which I have bought before and will buy again, but not from Amazon next time. If Amazon deliver something faulty, they should pick it up and replace it without delay and apologise. No apology from Amazon for delivering a faulty item, or indeed from manufacturer. Just spent several hours so far trying to sort it out. If I ever get it, it will be good like the others I have had before.

I am now retired, but when I worked as an IT professional I was used to SAN, NAS and mirrored server backup solutions. At home I used an external drive for my main backups plus a small NAS for longer term backups. I had used a variety of software solutions, but invariably went back to Windows 7 backup. It was painfully slow and prevented useful use of my PC until it had finished.I was running short on backup space and decided to go for another external drive. The Seagate looked like very good value. It came with it's own software, but I was just after the drive, or so I thought.I installed the drive and software. Initially the software did not install properly, but I was successful second time.I'm glad I persisted. The whole package is brilliant. I have set the backup for continuous backup. It just potters in the background backing up everything I want. Very fast and completely unobtrusive.Highly recommended.

Unlike others, which have the USB adapter soldered to the hard drive unit, this one is simply a 2.5" inch SATA drive (Fat style) with a USB adapter inside, in a nice and compact enclosure.Should you need to, the drive is easy to dismantle without causing any damage. I used a suction cup on the brushed steel cover to pull up whilst I pried it open with an old plastic card.It makes you wonder why these portable drives are cheaper to buy than the equivalent 2.5" SATA drive separately.Personally I continue using the drive in its original enclosure. Due to the size (fat drive) it is very unlikely the SATA drive would fit in a current laptop. Nonetheless it could be used in any desktop easily, fitted with a 3.5" adapter. The drive is fast (USB3) and with plenty of capacity.I would buy again.

Just got this. I use a MacBook Air and there are multiple ways to use the drive with it. The drive has startup files for Mac and PC which allow you to load a Toolkit onto your laptop. You can use that to setup mirror backups if that's your thing. On a Mac you can also use Time Machine.I already use Time Machine for complete backups on another external hard drive. I got this just to be extra safe with some of my content, especially family photos, so I simply copied the folders across. Pretty quick - few minutes to copy about 15GB of data in all - plug and play.As an extra backup, I also bought 2 years worth of 'Rescue', which means for £10 if I ever have problems with this drive I can send it off and they recover it for free.Worth it for me at least.

Not impressed, loaded the drive. Then I made a huge mistake, I loaded Mylio. It wrecked my IMac. I had to rebuild its database. It decimated graphics from programs, altered configurations. Now I cant pull that information back. I followed their guidelines to a T so none of that should have happened. I normally swear by Seagate but I have my doubts now. Oh I noticed what it was doing durring the operation and I couldnt stop it. One other little message, it gets to 25,000 images and stops and request you pay a monthly fee to carry on. Its a con. Because it doesnt allow you to stop it, now unable to put data back as it found it.

After following online instructions - I partitioned the 2tb disc into roughly two halves. One half I formatted for use in any PC/Mac for file storage, and the other half formatted for use by the Mac Time Machine. Having set it all off I've now completed my first full backup. Everything went simply and smoothly. The drive is nice and compact - I bought the silver one, and is quite a nice finish. The USB3 cable was included which was also helpful. Definitely a worthwhile consideration if you're looking for a bit of extra storage space, and want to use Time Machine at the same time.

I needed a large external drive to replace many smaller, old ones, and got this one, which is HUGE at 5TB!Pros: it's very portable, has oodles of storage space, looks good, and is pretty fastCons: short cable, runs hot, needs a LOT of time to spin up, power hungry (will not work on a standard USB2.0 port without a Y cable or powered hub.Overall though, I love this little drive. It holds all my stuff in a tiny space, and is more than fast enough to use daily.(The cons I mentioned don't really affect me either, but I mentioned them to help others choose.)

Fantastic external drive. Bought it as one of my PC internal sata drives was making ominous noises, so rather than risk losing the data that was on it, I decided to get an external large enough to take the data off along with that from my other legacy drives. I now have a PC that boots much faster since the OS is on M.2 NVM, and this one external drive holds all my other data. Plugs straight into a vacant USB3 port from where it also takes the necessary power. Couldn't be happier !

Really good hard drive, we have two, one for sprays on an Xbox one s and another one for photos. The Xbox one hard drive, stores all of the games perfectly you just have to do a quick google search and it will tell you exactly how to ch age the settings so that it is using the hard drive and not the Xbox storage. The photos hard drive works perfectly to store all photos, it really easy to use, you literally just have to plug it in and then it works the same as any usb stick.

Excellent 5TB portable drive. The drive performs above average achieving read speeds of between 131 and 146MBps, and write speeds of between 130 and 139MBps. A 10GB file was transferred in about 78 seconds from my laptop’s drive to the portable device. This performs faster than my 4TB large mains powered seagate drive I bought 2 years ago. Amazing how fast technology grows. The build quality is also excellent and premium feeling. If you have any questions let me know.

I needed a 2.5" 5TB SATA drive. This 5TB external drive was £99 and a Seagate Barracuda 5TB drive on its own was £169, so I decided to buy the external drive and see what was inside.2 minutes with a screwdriver and the drive was out and it's a Seagate 5TB Barracuda SATA drive inside (ST5000LM000) for about half the price of a bare drive. OK, so I've voided the warranty by taking it out of the case, but to get it at half price, I'm willing to risk that...

I cannot believe that such a big capacity drive can be fitted into a portable shape.Being 4TB it is a lot heavier than smaller capacity drives (e.g 2TB). It is also a lot thicker, wider and longer than smaller capacity drives and won’t fit into a pocket like most smaller sized portable drives.Apart from that, it is very fast and the storage size means you can fit a lot of media and documents on the drive. I am using it as backup for my Synology NAS.
