Mine is the 2TB version.I initially loaded 700GB only to find, too late, that they ship the thing with FAT32 formatting. It's easy enough to change the format to NTFS, which is probably what you really need, but for goodness sake! FAT 32 on a 2TB HDD? So..... I obviously had to do it all over again with NTFS in order to be able to copy those files bigger than 4GB. In these days of HD video recordings, a 4GB file is far from uncommon.Speed seems OK. I am only using in with a USB2 PC at the moment but it copied 700GB in about 16hrs even using 'Karens Replicator'. I am sure it would be faster if you use its own software but I do like the error report and flexible control that 'Karen' provides.Accessing a large file in normal use, I am very rarely made aware of any delay in loading it. That makes it a very practical machine although I would have preferred a captive cable to save carrying a separate one. There seems to be ample power in my USB2 ports; it works perfectly connected to just one port. I guess those people having problems have ended up with a slightly different model to mine or perhaps they should try a different USB2 port?It gets noticeably warmer than any other portable HDD I have used. I guess that the shock-proofing also acts as heat insulation. That MAY not be good for it long-term but it does come with a 3 year warranty. The adverts tell you how robust it is but the instructions are somewhat different. They tell you to handle it carefully, don't put it in a suitcase, don't get it hot, keep it in a protective box, etc. That rather defeats the point of having a rugged drive doesn't it?It vibrates in use more than any other portable HDD I have used (I have 5 others). Maybe it is spinning faster. It's not noisy, it is just a vibration you can feel.

All purchased from Amazon UK between July 2013 and April 2014. I am just about to purchase 2 more.I notice that reviews from Amazon.com (USA) are dated 2011 or earlier and just do not correspond to the latest devices. All the latest devices I have are very fast ( approx. 70 Mbytes/sec) and do not need connecting to 2 USB sockets. That was true of devices from 2011 or earlier but is no longer true. They are supplied with an old FAT 32 file system, so reformatting to NTFS is advisable. If the box for quick reformat is ticked then the reformatting will take about 1 minute. It is absolutely NOT necessary to do the full reformat which may well take hours.I have never drop tested any of mine, but I suspect if they are dropped while connected and transferring data this may still cause head crashes. When reformatting under windows 8.1 the write cache is disabled by default. If it is enabled then write speed will be significantly improved but the device should be safely ejected and removed so that the write cache is cleared. For precious data such as photos or videos that are irreplaceable I suggest that a single disk is not sufficient. Make a second backup and maybe even keep it in a separate location.

Firstly, I never review. Too damn busy for that. But after receiving the Transcend 1TB from Amazon, I must say damn I'm impressed. For the past 3 days I've been glued to the laptop transferring my entire photographic library from CD to Hard Drive, and it has been a pleasure. Fast speeds and a single usb which DOESN'T disconnect at the slightest movement. So far, this is quite possibly the best external drive I have bought, hands down. It feels rugged and has a great rubberized texture. I also bought a Case Logic hard drive case to keep it safe in transit, which is a bonus to keep the drive clean and usb cable with the hard drive at all times. I haven't tested the 'drop test'and no I wont be throwing it out the window any time soon, but it does feel sturdier and the construction is more that sufficient to keep the delicate components of a moving parts drive safe. So all in all, a happy buyer here. As with any drive, will keep my fingers crossed nothing crashes over the next few weeks/months as I've had happen to me before with other branded hard drives, but I've got a feeling this one will be just fine. Highly recommended!

I have two of these drives, the earliest one i bought was chunkier than the latest one. I guess they've slimmed down the rugged rubberised outer for cost/cosmetic reasons. It doesn't matter as both drives work faultlessly. The first thing i did was format the first drive for Mac, as FAT 32 doesn't allow large file sizes and restricts the drive. This also has the advantage of removing the backup on the drive, clearing space for Time Machine on the Mac. In response to a previous comment, i've had no problems using the drive from one USB on my Macbook Pro, just make sure you connect the main cable and not the thin ancillary cable. The case feels and looks like a quality item, with no rough edges and stippling to allow a slip free grip. It's a bit like comparing the plastics in a Japanese/European car against the cheapo opposition from Korea/China. The second drive has been left standard, other than removing the backup software, so i have a compatible drive for use between Mac and PC. If you're looking for a sound drive, especially at the new price of £75 for the 1TB, get one of these.

I use this mainly to hold TV Recordings, and a few documents so that I can replay them all on my laptop when out and about, or on holiday. It comes with a suite of software, all of which means nothing to me as all I need is the storage space. One terabyte of storage is an awful lot of data storage packet into such a small space. I bought a matching case for it that holds the drive, and its usb connecting cable in a convenient package that slips easily into a corner of the most tightly compressed suitcase or hand luggage. This is my fourth Transcend storejet. I favour these Storejet external hard drives as I can attest to their ruggedness and reliability. If you are naturally as clumsy as I am then you will appreciate that these Storejets can bounce a little without any lasting damage, or loss of data.Because of costly experiences with external hard drives there are a couple of brands that I will not touch, ever again. However, I can thoroughly recommend Transcend Storejets as they have never let me down yet. My only doubt is wondering if they float or not?

Nice litte rugged USB3 harddisk. The ONLY problem is that it requires a 2xUSB connection to your laptop/computer.All good, unless you have a new MacBookPro Retina which features only 2xUSB ports, each one on opposite ends of the keyboard. The USB cable that comes supplied with the device isn't long enough to have both USBs connected into the MacBook Retina, without the use of a (separate) USB extension cable. I suspect this wouldn't be a problem on other equipment, but be warned you'll need two USB ports to get this working. On the flipside, it doesn't need any external power DC plug.I used to always go with LACIE rugged drives, but they've grown a little too fat lately and are out-pricing themselves from my business.Welcome Transcend.Just as fast, just as rugged but with enough change left over to have a good night out down the bar.A good quality product, 4 stars purely because of the 2 x USB requirement and the lack of pre-sales information available letting you know it needs 2 x usb connections to work. Otherwise a good HD.

I eventually decided on this unit. Its rubberised and provides good grip and grip on any clean surface. The USB3 on my USB3.0 equipped laptop worked very well compared over USB2.0I copied over films and even Topfield and Humax recordings and found them playable on my LG and Samsung TV's (once I renamed the Topfield .rec file to .ts, the Humax were already .ts).The USB3 read speed avarages out at 86MB/s using HDTach3.1 (48MB/s-112MB/s)I've not dropped it yet.The backup/reconnect button works to reconnect well. I've not used any of the supplied software yet.Its blue indicator is the same colour regardless USB2.0 or USB3.0 connection.I had read the colour was different when working in USB2.0 vs.USB3.0, well this is wrong or not anymore, shame but no biggie.Connecting cable is USB3 Type-A one end to USB3 Micro-B connecting to the drive. Pretty standard. I didn't find loose fitting.I have tried connecting this to the Humax HDR Fox T2 and mostly without problem.Recommended.

This is my third Transcend hard drive, the other two are fine, just ran out of space (bit of a hoarder, and neurotic about backing up, everything is on 2 separate external HDD)! Unlike previous Transcend HDDs it needs only one USB port, a vast improvement, as you don't always have two available USB ports next to each other. Three year warranty, as on previous products (never had to use it on other ones). Just for an idea, on my system (2.4GHz 4GB RAM intel core i5) transferred 40GB holiday Pics (3000items ) in about 70mins (about 9.5MB/s). Compared to a Toshiba one (of similar price and capacity), that's definitely faster.Transcend is the one I use for travel, as I have definitely dropped one I use for travel before, others get the kid glove treatment. Have previously also owned Lacie and Freecom, of the four used, Transcend is my favourite.

Brought for our son who has a medical condition casing him to drop things. He needed some extra memory and after a trawl round the internet I came upon the Transcend 2TB 2.5 inch USB 3.0 StoreJet Military Grade Shock Resistance Portable External Hard Drive. The USB 3.0 is great as it provides significant data transfer rates. If the drive is connected via a USB 2 connection then a second connection is also required. To check which USB connection you have look in the laptop/desktop sockets, if they are blue you have USB 3 otherwise its USB 2. I can't say that the shock Resistance works but it does seem rugged and the anti slip casing gives a really good grip. Storage is massive at 2GB and for the price is really excellent. My 1TB hard drive is nearly full and I will certainly be buying another of these in the future.

Working well for a few months then for some reason it stopped working on one of the USB ports on the laptop even though it was working fine on this same port previously. Windows just doesn't see it when plugged in. Now can only use it on another USB port on the same laptop and the speed is somewhat slower than it was originally. Don't know if this is the fault of Windows or this drive. But hoping it won't stop working altogether. Also, it doesn't seem to be backward compatible with my other older laptop as in this older laptop which is USB 2 it can't see this drive at all so I am unable to transfer data between my 2 laptops which was the reason for buying this drive in the first place so amdisappointed in this respect hence the 4*

I have two of these drives now and also two of the 1TB drives. I find them to be fast and reliable, not sure about the shock resistant claims as I haven't ever dropped them to test it and don't intend to either.I can say I often carry the drives in backpacks that do get manhandled, bumped and knocked about and feel safe knowing they are relatively robust hard drive ( not quiet a drop test but good enough for me )I haven't had any issues with this drive and intend to purchase another one soon, the only thing I would say is to be careful with the USB 3 lead, it is a little flimsy and likely to break off in the drives port if transported connected in.

This is a very practical and convenient storage device. I formatted mine to provide two logical drives: 1Gb drive for automatic backups of my laptop and 2Gb for storing video projects. The photo shows the drive and the included cable with a (separately purchased) USB-C cable adaptor for a modern MacBook. I've used other Transcend drives before. This one feels even more robust. The indicator light clearly shows when the drive is busy and when it is safe to disconnect (previous Transcend drives had an LED which stayed light as long as the unit was powered so it wasn't always easy to see then the drive was inactive). A great product - highly recommended.

There are two minor quibbles. First, the supplied cable is a bit short, leading to the probability that the drive will fall from the PC tower. The second is the USB 3 connector (not Transcend's fault). It doesn't feel positive enough.I purchased this unit as I have laminate flooring throughout the house and wanted something to survive the inevitable drop. The drive powers-up fine on the USB port (on two PCs and my brother's Apple) without needing the 'Y' cable. I haven't tried transferring files on a USB 3 connection yet as my Seagate 3.5 inch external drive locked-up Windows 7, twice.I like it.

I bought this for a friend who was spending time in hospital, he had no internet access but was taking a tablet and some books. I filled the hard drive with music, films, series and some books the only thing l added was a longer usb lead in case he didn't want it on the bed. It was used and enjoyed everyday for his stay 4-6 weeks and is still going strong, he will watch the rest through his tv when it is linked with a WD media player. I would recommend but it was never dropped and isn't years old so I cannot say how long it lasts or how tough it can be when dropped.

I've had Transcend thumb drives and WD external HDD but buying a Transcend external 2TB HDD would be the first that I own.I need to agree that the casing and the drive look good and sturdy. Apart from being a backup, also had got it to kid proof the backed up data (hope the Military-grade Shock Resistance works as my kid throws things a lot)I haven't had any issues with this drive till now and it does whats intended. It could have been better if the drive had a WiFi connectivity as well. Also appreciate Amazon for a prompt delivery and packaging.
