This LaCie Porsche Design Hard Drive for PC and Mac is a rather expensive, yet very stylish, 1 TB external hard drive that can be used with most computer operating systems. LaCie (French: The Company) is a Paris-based French computer hardware company that has been around in various forms for many years, and in recent times it's parent company has been Seagate. In 2003 LaCie introduced a range of portable hard drives which were designed by the late F A Porsche who also designed the first model of the iconic 911 car. This LaCie hard drive will appeal to those preferring style to value and it is a very attractive product that performs well; it is easy to set up but you will need to have an idea of how you intend to use it before you start the formatting process.I am using mine mainly with a Microsoft Surface Book – which surprisingly does not have a USB C port – but works well via USB 3. The drive features only a USB C port but comes supplied with two connecting cables covering both USB A & C options. There is a “Quick Install Guide” included which is very basic but shows you the directory you need to open to complete the initial setup. The default option under Windows 10 is 20% shared space for various file formats with the other 80% dedicated to NTFS – this is what I used – but you can slide the boundary to vary this to suit your own intended use. You can also choose to install some other software for automatic backups etc. - I chose not to – and I guess the initial setting up on a Mac would give a slightly different range of options.LaCie's products were initially more Apple orientated but todays range are designed to work with most operating systems – however I expect their main appeal will still be to Mac owners, although the small onboard memory of the Surface Book makes an external drive almost essential for storing your data. This LaCie Porsche Design drive looks simple and Apple-like with an all aluminium finish and once setup it is very straightforward to use. I found the decorative band around the centre of the drive's case to have surprisingly sharp edges – it makes the design look good but feels rather unfinished. I like this LaCie drive a lot and it is something I will be using regularly however, it is expensive – twice the price of some 1 TB drives – and some larger drives may offer better value. However, this is a classic design that seems very well made and works as expected – this is a premium product at a premium price that does not disappoint; I want to give it five stars but I can really only give four for value at the current price of nearly one hundred and twelve pounds – but if you don't mind the price you will probably love it!

This drive is simply perfect for the new, 12", retina screened, MacBooks. I had come up against the following: problems while looking for a backup drive to use for my TimeMachine backups for my MacBook.1 - The two new USB 3.0 drives that I tried simply didn't appear on my Mac (in finder, disk utility or system report). This seems to be a problem wither with the low power output from the little MacBooks or due to the necessity of using a USB 3.0 to USB-C adaptor.2 - With only one USB-C port I needed to have a fast drive in order to ensure that the full backup could be made in less time that it takes for the battery to drain. The only other 'cheap' USB-C drive I found had low write speeds, this makes it unsuitable for the MacBook as I ran the risk of draining the battery before completing the backup.3 - Other USB-C drives were incredibly expensive, some costing almost as much as the MacBook itself. This drive is easily big enough to render it decently future proof. It's fast, USB-C compatible and seems solidly built. The exact same drive is currently retailing for £149.99 on the Apple Store (correct as of 18/08/1990) so this model is really fantastic value. The gold colour is not ideal for me as I have a space grey machine. However, due to the fact that the drive has an almost matte aluminium finish, the light reflects off the drive in such a way that unless it's sitting right next to the laptop, it could well be silver (have a look at the photo to see the colour difference). Silver 1TB models are available but for some reason they seem to be more expensive than the 2TB gold model. The drive comes with LaCie's software. However if you're using this on a Mac there is no need for the software. You simply need to reformat the drive in Disk Utility (this takes about 40 seconds) then you're ready to go. I am going to partition the drive to leave 1TB for my Time Machine Backup and 1TB for external storage of large files.Overall this is an excellent drive at really phenomenal value. As usual with Amazon Prime I received the unit less than 24hours after ordering it, what's not to love!

This product is a complete solution for those who want to back up their data on any Mac/Macbook Pro. Easy to set up. Comes with latest USBC to USBC cable and earlier USBA to USBC cable. Although data transfer is theoretically upto 5GB/s the hard disc can't operate at that rate. Rate for single file transfers was 8GB/min. The enclosed backup software is all most would need. However I wanted to use the drive for a Super Duper clone backup this required erasing the disk and setting up an extended journaled disk with a GUID table. Easy to do in Disk Utility but instructions would have been helpful. I backed up an 840GB drive in 2.5 hours. The process was silent.Subsequent backups will take much less time as they are incremental. The set up software can also be used to make the drive, Windows compliant. If you wanted the drive to work for Windows and for Macs it would need to formatted as ExFat 32. The drive could also have been used to set up a Time Machine. The website has good instructions and support. There are not many USBc to USBc drives and this is one of the cheaper ones yet looks very stylish.Delivery took only a few days and was by Royal Mail 1st class and was included in the price.

Lacie disk is a good looking device, slightly larger than WD equivalent and faster than others, when healthy. USB C is not as reliable as USB 2 or 3 and you find USB C cables having a short shelf life.I purchased this disk in November. 8 months later the disk became so slow that was unusable (copy speed one gig per hour or more). Before purchasing this or any 4TB disk you should consider few things:a) Has the storage technology to be used by PCs reached its limit size-wise? The more stuff you pile in the slower the operation becomesb) do you really want to put all your eggs in one basket? If anything goes wrong you have to have another disk, as big as, to transfer your data before sending the faulty disk backc)Does the warranty mean anything or useful to have? Seagate the owner of Lacie offers reconditioned replacement disk but what if you can't access your defective disk to wipe off your data then what happens to your information on the disk, once it's repaired. Most logical outcome is to bin faulty hard disk and buy new to have peace of mind

I have used LaCie Porsche drives with my iMac, but this time I installed it with my Windows laptop. This drive installs and works just as easily for Windows 10 as for MacOS.I don't think that my laptop particularly utilises USB-C, but most importantly, it just works. The small size of the drive makes it most portable and therefore convenient.Unlike some older LaCie drives that I have that require a separate power connection, this is powered from the USB, and is therefore better suited to laptop use.Overall, a very handy drive for someone on the move. It is also very good when used as a shared resource that can be moved between different computers, never forgetting to eject the drive as it is moved. The drives are very reliable and I've never had a LaCie drive have issues so far, which is why they are my external drive of choice.

It's just an external portable hard drive - but it's also an object of beauty and elegance. LaCie makes special hard drives - like any other hard drive they have a job to do - storing data, but if you like the finer things in life and have an eye for aesthetics, LaCie have an external hard drive solution for you. Inside they are all Seagate (so no quibbles about performance) but it's in their looks that they excel. I have the 1TB version of this drive as well (but in silver) and both are great lookers. In terms of performance, the drive works well and crucially in near silence. I have paired this one with my Lenovo Desktop and to be honest, you wouldn't know it was there. Very, very impressive overall - I don't use the supplied software, preferring instead the much more straightforward and easy to use GoodSync.

Just connected it today & did the first backup from my 9 year old iMac. Slight problem to start with after connection, possibly due to some Adobe subscription offer which i didnt want. Took me around the houses for a few minutes but then suddenly connected with time machine & away it went. Unlike a previous Lacie 3.5inch desktop HD i had, this one is powered by the USB cable, is totally silent, & has an unobtrusive light. Not sure yet but I think it doesnt wake up the Mac to do a backup whenever it feels like in the middle of the night like my old 3.5 used to do(to my annoyance). No strange 'recovered messages' mailboxes popping up after doing an email restore either. So far, fingers crossed,I am very pleased with this tiny little HD.

Hard drive works well, transferring is fast (read as well as write) and the drive runs silent and cool. The packaging insinuates that this is designed to go alongside a Mac but is this will work with both Mac and PC (I myself actually use it for my Xbox). There is a front cutout which flickers white during operation which is fairly bright but not too bright that it is distracting.Considering that the equivalent Seagate and WD drives are similarly prices, I would highly recommend this over them as I have found it to be slightly faster but have an aluminium enclosure over the others plastic ones (generally feel like a more premium product for the same money.

Well designed, sturdy and self powered drive. I found it quite slow at first using it for time machine with my Mac, and decided that the best route was to wipe everything stored on it using disk utility and start again. It seems to have worked and is running much faster than it was. So to get this working at full speed fully reformat the whole thing. Only 80mb of space seems unstable at the moment Wichita is impressive on a 2tb drive!Design wise it reminds me of the classic iPhone 4 design with the sand which of glass (this is stainless steel and aluminium) it’s very light and usb c is a great addition.A great backup drive to have on hand!

They sell nice outer design. Would be 5 stars but for the bundled software. You have two choices. Use the software that comes on the drive to install it, or not. I find it hard to trust software that arrives on random hard drives. Do you really want to run that on your computer? They could have just delivered it formatted in a useful way, but instead they put their weird installer program on it.The mac DiskTool could not understand it, so I ended up plugging it into a linux machine and using cfdisk to sort out the partition table and format it.After that, it works great!

28.2.2019

Now I have to admit that I was a bit apprehensive about this working with my MacBook Pro haven read of some formatting problems etc. But, it was dead easy: just plugged it in & didn't have to format or anything & it worked straight out of the box.My MacBook Pro is a late 2012 model recently updated to the most recent mac OS of Mojave. There are two cables that come with this hard drive:- C to C & C to USB. So, I plugged in the C to USB for my MacBook Pro & it was already formatted to EX-FAT. Used Time Machine to backup; simple as that!

This is my second LaCie. Together, they make a neat stack, with their vertical indicator lamps inside sturdy aluminium cases. I recall this one came formatted for Mac with GUID partition map, in any case I checked the drive and reformatted as a matter of course. It will work straight out of the box if required. The supplied software can set the drive with more partitions and automated back-ups but I'd use Apple or MS tools anyway. Also supplied is a USB A to USB A cable and USB A to USB C cable.

26.1.2018

I first purchased a Buffalo but couldn't get it to work with my MacBook Pro. This LaCie seems to be working very nicely. It is quite a good-looking hard drive (if that is important to you) and goes nicely with the black and silver of the Mac laptops. I have partitioned mine for Time Machine and Super Duper back ups and the remainder for files. Of course it is early days and proof of its success will be reliable performance over time but at the moment it is exactly what I require.

19.5.2018

So far so good. Transfer speeds are noticeably faster compared to usb 3 or esata. It's very light and small, but it slides too easily on the desk. It does heat up quite a lot on heavy usage. Construction is plastic top and bottom with aluminum side frame. I use it as a time machine & storage on a mac pro and it's very fast. I hope it's going to be as reliable as my old wd passport which is still working perfectly after more than 6 years on almost non stop use.

Nice looking piece of kit. Does the job wonderfully. It’s working very nicely with my iMac and MacBook Pro. Whether external storage will work with Apple/Mac products is always a bit of a worry but this LaCie 8gb drive works no problem. This is the 3rd LaCie that I’m utilising and everything works no bother (hope that’s not “famous last words”). You could use it as a portable device but it’s not meant for that as it’s bigger and designed for desk top.
