The "G-Technology 500 GB G-DRIVE Mobile SSD R-Series Ruggedized, Portable Solid State Storage" can, as supplied provides additional storage capacity for any Mac laptop. It could also work with any other laptop, notebook and some tablets if suitably formatted. It is attractive, mostly black with a silver top edge. Beneath the surface are parallel slots in which are rows of reflective blue dots; they may help with cooling under protracted usage. It is only slightly larger than a standard bare SSD but, unlike several other broadly similar models, has very short (10cm) detachable data/power leads rather than a captive one. The on-board interface is USB 3.1 Gen 2 with up to 560 MB/s read speeds; write speeds will be much lower. It has a limited 5-year guarantee. An equivalent WD model is slightly smaller in all dimensions with a captive lead that is housed within the outer casing when not used. The drive is formatted for Mac which have historically allowed access to some Windows drives but the reverse never applied. The drive can be easily reformatted to NTFS on a Windows PC but will then be incompatible with Mac systems. There are two possible routes to cross-compatibility; one is to reformat the drive to exFAT (not normally available via the FORMAT applet but achievable), or to FAT32 with some practical restrictions. The alternative is to purchase and use third-party software to access the drive as currently formatted. The enclosure's design is marginally longer and deeper than others to allow for the socket but also narrower at 50mm than said WD design which is 67 x 95 x 9.5mm. Regardless, it remains pocket-sized and relatively lightweight although heavier than WD's unit; the casing is apparently metal with a thin, rubberised outer coating. The brand was never previously used personally (as a distant past Mac user, it was then unknown) but has a solid reputation among Mac owner-users.Another ruggedized drive not personally owned but occasionally used was encased in a substantial, soft 'rubber' shock-absorbing shell but both this and the WD have hard shells. The WD was once accidentally knocked from about 75cm onto a hard floor without external or internal damage; this should be at least equally damage-resistant as it claims a 3 metre drop capability onto carpet. It could, as-is, provide expansion storage for any recent MacBook with Thunderbolt/USB-C support or, suitably reformatted or by using relevant software with the appropriate cable, with any Windows PC with limited internal storage capacity. One accessory obviously missing is a pouch or case to house the drive unit and its leads which could otherwise be easily lost (especially the unused or least used of the two) but longer replacements can be purchased fairly inexpensively.

My previous MacBook Pro (2011) had a user upgradeable hard drive so I was able to fit a 1 TB SSD and keep most of my photographs and audio files with me at all times. When I bought my 2017 MacBook Pro, the option of 1 TB SSD was prohibitive so I opted for the standard 500 GB SSD model, which has meant that my photographs have to be kept on external hard drives instead. My usual main external drive is a LaCie Rugged Pro drive, which has a large capacity but is quite heavy so I tend to leave it at home.I was surprised how small and light the G-technology SSD drive was when I first took it out of the box. The design is very smart, with a aluminium top that is a good match for my MacBook whilst the body has slots through which an inner electric blue metallic cover is visible. As a Mac user, life is made easy as this drive is already formatted for MacOS so I didn’t need to use the Windows Utilities that are bundled onto a separate partition of the drive. The partition uses 4.08 GB of space and was easily removed using the MacOS Disk Utility, using instructions on the disc.. The drive comes with a choice of monogrammed USB leads for the USB-C to USB-C connection required for my MacBook Pro as well as a USB-C to USB-A lead for those with older devices.Transfer speed is a huge benefit of using an SSD. When I go on holiday, I usually fill up one or two 64 GB cards with photographs. I therefore wanted to see how long it was take to transfer very large amounts of data across. For simplicity, I used various Lightroom data files already on my MacBook Pro and transferred them to a test folder in the LaCie Rugged and repeated the same experience that, this time to a test folder on the G-technology SSD. Both were connected to USB-C sockets on my MacBook Pro. For a 3.8 GB file, the LaCie transferred at 74 MB/s and the G-technology SSD at 341 MB/s. I then transferred a 34.8 GB file. This took 2’ 27” to G-technology SSD (236 MB/s) but 18’ 48” to the LaCie (30 MB/s). The other difference was the temperature of the two drives. The LaCie Rugged became noticeably hot to touch after its hard work whereas the G technology SSD remained cool. It also ejects faster than a conventional hard drive! The G Technology SSD is therefore ideal for those who wish to transfer large quantities of photographic or video footage whilst mobile, as a backup to SD cards. This is particularly useful for those whose cameras only have single SD card slots such as my Sony A6400 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. It has also been drop tested to 3 m, which is also ideal when travelling.

Firstly my only real experience of SSD drives prior to this is the fact that my laptop (18 months old) has an SSD drive and is still reasonably fast. My thoughts prior to getting this was that you can get some serious usb memory stick type capacity for this price. However - in use - my thoughts changed.Firstly the tech bit. It is Apple formatted however G-Technology have obviously decided to help customers out. There is a bit of paper with the drive that tells you what to do if you want to use it just with Windows or with Windows and Mac. I'm a Windows user so tried the Windows file out. It is a touch primitive and seems to be simply a Windows shell to remove the need for much knowledge ofWindows formatting but it works.I tried a few file copies in both directions and struggled to find anything big enough for this to be anything other than lightning fast. Thinking outside the box I decided to try it on my over 2 year old Samsung phone (Oreo Android). It has a C port and was perfectly happy with the drive. I wanted to shift a batch of photos from the phone anyway so copied them to this SSD drive. Over 450 files - a number of which were videos - and over 3 gb in all copied in just over a minute. That is waay faster than anything else I've used before for this task (including usb c memory sticks). I then moved the file from this device to my Windows hard drive - marginally over 10 seconds!!Suffice it to say that I am seriously impressed. There is no question this will be my "go to" storage in future - it would be mad to use anything else really. I do think it is expensive and I see that there are similar drives that are cheaper. However I think it unlikely that I will buy any more memory sticks and I would seriously consider getting one of these with my own money if I need another one.

I agree with the other reviewers. This is an excellent drive for the price. I also have the Samsung T5 which is great, but this drive is better value for money. If you plan to use this drive on a Windows computer, setting up the drive can be a little confusing, so I hope the following helps:WINDOWS USERS: This drive arrives formatted for APPLE computers. When you plug it into a PC (Windows 7/10 etc) you will hear the drive connect, but no drive letter will appear, so you can't access the drive straightaway. These leads some to think the drive is broken / not working. Not true, the drive needs to be reformatted to work on a PC but the way to do this is as follows:Ensure the drive is plugged in then...1.)RIGHT CLICK on the Windows icon in the bottom left corner of your taskbar2.) Select DISK MANAGEMENT from the menu3.) You will see the G-Drive listed (usually as DISK 2)4.) Look at the GRAPHIC of the hard drive and RIGHT CLICK on the PARTITION (The largest bit)5.) Choose the option to DELETE PARTITION. Once complete it will say UNALLOCATED SPACE6.) RIGHT CLICK on the Unallocated Space and select FORMAT and format it as NTFS (This is the only option available for PCs)7.) You can choose to QUICK FORMAT although I prefer to do a full format to set the disk up.8.) At the end of the FORMAT process Windows will assign a drive letter to the drive and it will open (D: / E: etc..)9.) If you now EJECT the drive using the icon on your task bar and plug it back in, it will open as a Windows drive with a Drive letter.Sorry if the above all sounds complicated, it is easier to do it that it appears! You then have a brilliant SSD drive to use for all your PC / Windows files.

This is an impressive-looking, pocket sized drive. A big silver G, and, when the light catches it, a metallic blue shining through the louvers front and back. The black covering has a rubbery feel and certainly looks as though it would protect the unit very well from minor knocks and scrapes. It’s around 4” x 2” and just a touch over half an inch thick. It comes ready for use with a Mac, but since I wanted to use it with both Mac and PC (Windows 7) it was the work of moments to run the built-in software to set it up for use on the PC.Can’t really do much testing other than to check it works, but it copied 40gb from PC 3.5” HDD to G-drive in around 45 mins – but of course the access speed of the HDD is probably the limiting factor here. There was certainly no delay accessing the G-drive data on PC once it had been copied. Took about 30 seconds to copy 4gb of that copied data onto the Mac’s HDD which makes that around 5 mins if I’d had space on my Mac to do the whole 40gb.It’s set up to work on a Mac straight out of the box. It’s very easy to set it up to work on both Mac and PC and it’s a great device if you need to transfer big chunks of data from one to the other. I’m very pleased with it.

Now that I’ve moved from an iMac to a MacBook Pro, external storage has become very important to me given it’s so expensive to upgrade internally. But going back to a mechanical hard drive seemed like a step backwards, so I went with SSD.This new drive from G-Tech is amazingly good value for money. It’s not simply the cost per gigabyte - which is actually on par anyway - but that on top of this the drive is built like a tank, is one of the fastest on the market, and isn’t much larger than a credit card. You also get USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to Type 3.1 cables as well, for added expandability. The 500gb option is a sweetspot and has been ideal for archiving music and video, since I don’t need them on the go often.Compared to Samsung’s impressive T5, the added ruggedness and speed of this G-Tech model for basically the same price makes it a standout winner.

Excellent little piece of kit, very fast, and much smaller than I expected. Having had two brand new Lacie drives fail on me in the last 6 months, I decided to try an SSD which, whilst being far more expensive, have a much better reputation for longevity. Obviously I can't prove how long it will last, but first impressions are that it is more than up to the job. Write speeds are lightning fast, and it works flawlessly with my Macbook. All in all, very pleased so far, just wish they weren't so expensive.

Very small and lightweight which although for me not essential for others may be an important factor. Currently in use as a back up device for I-Mac and MacBook Pro. Works straight out of the box with Time Machine. Four star rating will probably be five when the unit has proved itself reliable. Overall a well priced SSD for the Mac user, if needs dictate I will have no hesitation in purchasing a second.I almost forgot the important bit...it's fast!G-Technology G-DRIVE Mobile SSD R-Series 1TB

This SSD is genuinely fantastic. The build quality is immense, thick rubberised case, metal elsewhere, solid USB C connection, they've clearly thought this through.Actual performance is excellent. Transferring 20gb of audio files was carried out in a good amount of time, and I did not see SSD speed drop below 200mbps, which is very good. In fact most of the time I saw 300.This drive is very very good, and I recommend it and will be buying the thunderbolt 3 version in the future.

It’s extremely well made and both looks and feels premium. It’s small and when compared to the Sandisk extreme rugged external SSD it has faster read/write speeds. If you own a Mac another nice bonus is that MacOS has its own icon for the device when it’s plugged in. I don’t regret my purchase at all. I use Native Instruments Maschine and can install both the application and sound library onto the drive and it runs as if it was installed on an internal drive.

25.3.2019

It is a very convenient size and weight for an external SSD drive of an economic capacity. It certainly feels quiet rugged, at the same time it has no awkward corners or switches on it. I am using it to build a mirrored library of my extensive collection of digital photographs, which will match the same data on my cloud storage. This is an insurance exercise to manage the library, with the cloud element to act as an offsite back up.

Really pleased with this. Saw it at the photography show dropped in a fish tank full of water. Works as soon as you shake off the drips. Needed portable drive that’s fast and durable to use with my MacBook Pro. 500Gb internal space is not enough and buying more at the time was extortionate. With USB 3 and USB C cables it’s good for the future too. And it was slightly cheaper than the alternatives.

Works perfectly, no power cord, doesn't seem to go to sleep. Using it with my ps 4 pro and some games load in half the time, kinda weird always being the first one loaded in on maps! A god send for games like Monster Hunter where load times are reduced from approx 70 seconds to 25 seconds.

17.1.2019

Very fast drive. I like that it doesn’t sleep which means it is immediately available after waking the computer.... unlike the sata drive this has replaced which often had to be dismounted then remounted after the computer was woken from sleep.

I noticed an immediate uptick in speed when using this SSD for video editing. No more buffering of preview files is amazing. It's incredible small, slim and light too. I'll probably get a couple more of these over the next few years.
