I go through a lot of garlic presses.I cook every meal from fresh ingredients and that includes at least an entire bulb of garlic in every pan of meat.Garlic presses come to my house to be crushed into pieces and thrown in the trash.I've only used this three times but I am happy to say that despite its shortcomings, it's the best crusher I've ever used, and I didn't know it was possible to have a device that works this well in the kitchen. It is easy to use and durable.I recommend that you buy this without hesitation! There are two grievances, I list them more so you can understand them and decide if it works for you.The first is that it is very possible to pinch your hand badly. This device is intended to provide a ton of leverage but it's also low-profile meaning it does not take up a lot of space. You can see the safety/functionality trade-off here. I haven't pinched myself yet, but caution is necessary when I use it because I know at some point a big pinch is coming! The second complaint isn't so much a complaint, as discovering that I have to clean this in a new way than I'm used to. Every press I've had previously had one of those little stabbers which could reverse back, and push out the pulp which would make the rest of the cleaning quite simple. I can't do that with this one. There is no set of stabbers & you can see that the screen flips out, and it is intended for more than just garlic. It looks intended to be thoroughly cleaned for heavy use in many different ingredient situations. For example, I already crushed clementines and I found that it made it very easy to clean because it folded out. Cleaning will be a little more time consuming but you can subtract that extra time from the fact that I can crush my product literally ten times faster now.The final compliment I'd like to state is that there is no waste or leaking. I did not find that any of the product squished out the edges as I pressed down. Almost 100% of the product got crushed through the holes where it was supposed to go, and that is not something I've previously experienced. What a pleasure to NOT have to deal with scraping leaky bits. A real time saver. While I have only used this for a week I am confident to say that I am as pleased as can be the money spent, and I expect to own this for life. It's durable beyond anything I could expect.Buy it.Edit: I came back to add this piece of information to the review: I have crushed over 50 entire bulbs of garlic with this thing and it's as good as the day I bought it. I am very confident after several months of ownership that this is truly a workhorse and you need to have this in your kitchen. I'd also like to point out that after several months I have never once pinched myself.

While I do sometimes use a large knife to crush and coarsely chop garlic cloves, I find the small uniform pieces from a garlic press are more ideal for certain dishes. I had a press that I'd been using for years until the hinge finally popped on it. Certainly, garlic presses can easily be found for much lower cost; but I decided to do a bit of research to find one that would work well, clean easily, and be long lasting.Besides the many glowing reviews on Amazon, I found that Cook's Illustrated highly endorsed this Kuhn Rikon Epicurean press. Also, the folks at America's Test Kitchens did an in-depth, hands-on comparison of various brands of garlic presses. After evaluating the presses for many variables such as precision,ease-of-use, cleaning, and durability, this Kuhn Rikon model was their top-rated. Their second-place choice (and voted the Best Buy) was the Trudeau Garlic Press.I'm happy with the performance of this Epicurean garlic press so far. It's solidly constructed of stainless steel and feels comfortable and nicely heavy in my hand with a hinge system that works smoothly. It opens up easily with a hopper that flips out for even easier cleaning than most presses. It works with unpeeled as well as peeled; but I usually tend to peel my garlic cloves first to ensure that no pieces of papery garlic peel go into recipes. While I usually grate ginger root, I've found that this press works perfectly fine for crushing and mincing small pieces of ginger root, too.The Kuhn Rikon Epicurean Garlic Press is definitely a top-of-the-line product; but I had expected it to have a MUCH easier squeeze than its competitors. It's marketed as such with references made to its unusual lever-action which is supposed to be far superior to the one-to-one action of most garlic presses. Truthfully, I only found it the tiniest bit easier to squeeze than my old one at less than half the price.Still, it is a very nice press which I expect to use for many years.

Seriously, the title says it all. Nothing else comes close.Me and this garlic crusher go back a long way. My first one was given to me as a gift. From who I cannot remember unfortunately, as I would like to thank them again. It wasn't until a while after I got it that I realised how amazing it was. I had so many garlic crushers at the time, but this one quickly stood out in the crowd. It's pretty simple really. Most garlic crushers don't use the strength of your hand to squeeze 2 sides together and squish the garlic through the holes. Great, but if it has any flex, like it's made of plastic or something, not very efficient. Normal metal ones don't even do a great job. This one though uses some very clever leverage to maximise the squeezing on your hand muscles, and the result is the most efficient crushing of a garlic possible with a human hand. Seriously it puts other garlic crushers to shame. So my first one of these was cruelly taken from me when I broke up with my ex. Looking back I don't know if I was hurt more by the breakup, or the loss of the garlic press. By now I am going with garlic press. In the in-between years I was gifted a similar design of garlic press leverage wise, butte handle was plastic (pretty touch plastic at that) and that meant it didn't work anywhere near as well.So here we are years later, and I finally bit the bullet and replaces my Kuhn Rikon. Once again I am complete. It's pricey I know, but take it from me it is worth every penny. I am sure this press will last you a lifetime if you can hold onto it for that long, and it's packaged nicely too so would make a great gift.5 stars does not do it justice.

Many of you will look at the £30 price tag and balk at the cost. You'll look at the other rave reviews of this glorious, shiny, heavenly device and wave them to one side remarking "It's only a garlic crusher, I can't see why it would be any better than my £5 one". You may even wear (not literally) your cheaper garlic press as a badge of honour as to how clever you were by not buying this one. But you'd be wrong. You'd be wrong every time you got annoyed at cleaning your cheap hunk of metal, or every time it got blocked up.Soon you'd probably hate it, and you'd chuck it away then get another £5 garlic press. Possibly even giving a fleeting thought to those silly people with their Kuhn Rikon.£30, pah! I've spent another fiver. But your cheapness won't win in the long run, you'll get through more and more awful garlic presses whilst we, the Kuhn Rikon owners, have our glorious One True Press - the press that will last us the rest of our lives (or until we move house and lose it). And we won't be stressed by cleaning it, and we know we can crush anything (garlic based) we throw at it. Over the years your stress will build up but you won't know why, all you know is that the more you cook the worse it gets. In the end it may even cost you your marriage. Save your marriage, get a Kuhn Rikon.

After spending a fortune on cheap garlic presses i oped to spend a bit more on a Jamie Oliver Garlic Slice and Press which lasted slightly longer probably ten minutes longer, A friend introduced me to the Kuhn Rikon which she has had for several years i was impressed by the quality though not the price then i started doing some sums 10 cheap garlic presses equates to around £50 over a three year period so if this only lasts three years I have made a saving though I am sure that it will last much longer. It is made in China, what isn't these days, though unlike some cheaper mass produced products it is made to a high specification demanded by Kuhn Rikon to preserve their reputation and it shows,a solid and well constructed piece of kitchen equipment worth the extra money, you get what you pay for.it crushes both garlic and ginger effortlessly even my 10 year old granddaughter can use it, its innovative design makes cleaning it easy and its price is justified.

This garlic crusher is very strongly built and I do not expect to have to buy another in my lifetime. It's made of solid stainless steel and not cheap cast metal like others I have owned. It is many times more expensive than the aforementioned but it is easier to use and will pay for itself in the long term. It is easy to clean as it levers open fully. In use it is a perfect shape for your hand and has a superb feeling of quality. I did wonder what 'epicurean' meant: something to do with the Ancient Greek Epicurious, this suggests that it is for people who look for the finer things in life. If you simply want to crush garlic and cheaply, this is not for you,but you will probably end up owning a series of inferior and unsatsfying models. If you want to enjoy the experience time and time again then I have no hesitation in recommending the Kuhn Rikon Epicurean Garlic Press.

After having many garlic presses over the years - and throwing them away because they were rubbish - I took the plunge and paid for what, on first appearances, seems to be a lot of money for such a thing. However, this press is perfect. Whether you leave the bulb peeled or not, the garlic is easily crushed by a smooth lever. The garlic is squeezed through the holes leaving the skin and very little else behind. One issue I always had with others presses was the difficulty in cleaning - there would always be bits of garlic stuck in the holes and I had to use a pin to clean it. It would therefore take me longer to use/clean the press than chopping the garlic the traditional way.Not with this one - a quick blast under the cold tap and it’s clean ready to air dry. Beautiful quality piece of kit - I now use this every time whether for one bulb or more. Buy it.

This is the best ever garlic press we ever had. It works like a char and cleaning it has become so easy as the it flips open in a way that the press sieve gets exposed so that it can be cleaned in seconds. The only issue I have is with the price. I would have never bought it for the full price which is around £45 in the UK and even £53 in Germany. I don’t get why it sells in the US for half of the price than in Europe. Kuhn Rikon is a Swiss brand and manufactures their cookware and accessories in near Zurich, Switzerland. Products don’t have to be shipped around half of the globe first to reach the UK. So their products should be cheaper here. A more realistic price point would be £20 or perhaps £25 at the most.Well, let’s hope it will last a lifetime at this price :) It is certainly very sturdy. One star less for the price tag though.

I really did not want to pay such a high price for a garlic press, but then I figured that if it lasts, then I could regard it as value for money. I saw the "You Tube" demonstration whereby a range of presses were tested, and the American lady said that this one was the one they liked the best because of its performance and clean-ability. She said that it chops garlic into the right sized pieces and yields a lot of garlic, and can be used even with the skins on.My findings are that it is fantastic for chopping garlic and is, indeed, easy to clean. I was a bit worried about giving my fingers a pinch after reading another review, so I am careful while using it. It is robust and is the best garlic press I have ever had.It does not work well for ginger, however.

I have tried numerous garlic presses before and have always found them disappointing. They either waste garlic, are tricky to clean or require huge muscles to operate. This Kuhn garlic press is none of these things. It is easy to press the garlic through, supremely easy to clean and has a really cleverly designed "plate" for the garlic that swings completely apart from the main body of the press for cleaning. It also easily allows you to press garlic cloves of varying sizes from very small to really large, without having to remove the skin. I highly recommend this to anyone - despite the hefty price tag. You'll spend more on cheaper useless presses that don't work even half as well!

Wow, bought this crusher after my trusted one that I've had for years broke. I bought another one in a local hardware store and threw it away within a few days as it was useless. I read the reviews on Amazon about this device and decided to buy it although I thought it was expensive - but I have no regrets whatsoever. It is brilliant. Being all stainless steel is great no rust or paint problems, and it's lever mechanism must of been designed by someone who knew what they were doing. It crushes the garlic bulbs with very little fibre left in the device, I am very please with this it seems a professional device. Would not hesitate to recommend it.

19.6.2014

This has been by far the best garlic press I have ever owned. Several others either failed after a few months (usually at the pivot joint) or didn't do the job adequately, squashing most of the garlic cloves, rather than pressing them though the mesh. The Kuhn Rikon is sturdy, comfortable to use and produces finely pressed garlic that can be stirred smoothly into dishes. It is easy to clean and comes out of the dishwasher in pristine condition. As kitchen utensils go, it's on the expensive side but well worth it to have something so efficient and reliable.

31.8.2012

Its probably overkill but at least I know it will last a lifetime or two or three. Solid steel construction feels good in the hand and the lever action ensures easy crushing of a couple of garlic cloves at a time. You don't get the feeling the device will break before the garlic does if you squeeze too hard. The steel is thick, not just a thin cover made to look thick.Cleaning is as simple as can be. Either pop in the dishwasher, or open it up completely, brush and rinse. Tada!No regrets. It will be a hundred years before our family needs another one.

18.8.2014

Great piece of kit, best garlic press I've ever used. Very sturdy, quality construction and materials. Must have been engineered for leverage as it doesn't require a great amount of force to crush the garlic. The end size and consistency of the crushed garlic is perfect. I found cleaning to be easy. Granted that you can only fit a single medium to medium-large clove in the crusher at a time , however it's so quick and easy, can get through all the garlic you'll need for home use easy-peasy. Definitely recommend and worth the money.

Looked at lots of garlic presses as my old one was not stainless steel and all the coating wore off. Grey garlic isn't pretty!Anyway, bought this one because it looked really well made and easy to clean. It came in a nice box so would be excellent for a present and basically lives up to the claims of being easy to clean and presses garlic very well.HOWEVER, be very careful when using it as if you aren't careful you will pinch your hand when closing it together to force garlic through. I've now had a couple of nips from it!
