Before I begin, a short description of this game would be: Your PSP Collection Is Incomplete Without It.When this game arrived in the post, as soon as I looked at the cover I judged this game as a cheesy hack-and-slash made only to add another game to the already large PSP pile. But how wrong I was ...You control a character called Shinbu, who in his childhood was kicked out of his clan for looking at an ancient monument. Although the game does not tell you this at the beginning, later on details of his youth are uncovered one by one. About a minute after the beginning of the game, you see a girl running towards you being chased by three men. You have to fight them, and once you kill one of them they run off.The girl tells you that she is looking for a man called Shinbu (you, of course) and you decide to take her back to your hometown.I am not going to say what happens next because 1) It will spoil it for you and 2) Because there is so much to say that this review will end up being 3 pages long. The main part of the game is exploring the world of Key of Heaven and bumping into enemies as you go, including occasional boss battles. Although this sounds quite boring, it's actually very addictive and fun, but when you are bored with it, you can always make up move sequences by putting 'Kenpu' (tiles that contain certain forms such as a sideslash or a flip) into a 'Bugei Scroll' (a scroll that Kenpu can be placed in). Seeing what you've made is very fun; however, once you are able to use magic, this will become unnecessary due to the fact that magic is far more powerful.Key of Heaven is a game that will appeal to many types of gamers, but especially to people that either like a game with a great story that is worthy of its own book, or those that enjoy a complex hack-and-slash game that is immensely satisfying.Another good thing about this game is that there are no faults or glitches. Plus, there will be very few times when you die, which keeps the frustration level down, seeing as the game is so easy. But DO NOT think by this that you will complete it within a day or two - it is long enough to take the average player about a week to complete. Here are the individual ratings:GRAPHICS: 9.5/10 - Smooth and very clearSOUND/MUSIC: 8/10 - Although the music is slightly repetitive, it suits the story and so do the effectsGAMEPLAY: 9.7/10 - Great hack-and-slash fun that lasts for agesDIFFICULTY: EASY - It won't take very long to get the hang of things in this gameLIFESPAN: 8/10 - Erasing your file and beginning right from the start is actually much more fun than you would thinkOVERALL: 9.5/10 - Good gameplay added with lovely sound, graphics and a very long story makes Key of Heaven one of the best PSP titles ever made.BUY THIS GAME. Full stop.

First of all, don't let the box of this game guide you. It doesn't look very attractive, rather cheap really, and to me it's a mystery why they picked this image to 'sell' their game. The cover of the booklet looks so much nicer, as does the inlay art. Also I don't really like the European release title. In the US the game was released as 'Kingdom of Paradise', I don't see why this had to be changed.Key of Heaven is an action RPG. You play as an outcast of a certain Chi arts clan. And here being the outcast is a good thing apparently, because your entire clan has been wiped out by a rival clan, right at the beginning of the game. The bad guys seem to seek world dominance, and you are obviously out to stop them. The story is told by means of some nice, good looking cut scenes, that are voice overed in both English and Japanese, which I found a nice addition.Your character travels from capital to capital in the lands of the different chi art clans. You travel alone most of the time, but are sometimes accompanied by another character that will fight alongside you through the hordes of baddies. In fights, you can either get rid of your opponents with all kinds of fancy sword fighting techniques, or you can use your chi arts. As you make your way through the game, you'll find 'scrolls' (or get them as drops from fallen enemies), which you combine to new sword fighting techniques, so gradually you grow stronger in that part. Chi arts on the other hand are learned at shrines in the chi arts clans' capitals. You can level them up by using them a lot. Unlike the sword fighting techniques, they have to be 'charged' before you can use them. I found the chi arts a little overpowered. If you do some grinding, not even that much, the chi arts allow you to take out several enemies at a time with one single blow. So, if you want to keep things a little challenging, it is advised to keep on sword fighting. In my experience the controls are quite tight, and the camera is fixed, so you always have a good overview of what's going on. All too often in this kind of games the camera blows. The sword fighting techniques look cool, as do most chi arts. They both run smoothly on the PSP, there are however noticeable frame rate drops when you're attacked by 5 to 6 enemies at a time. The music does its job. Some tunes are better than others, but none of them is irritating. I found myself humming one of the songs at a certain point, which I think is a good thing, although my girl friend might disagree. All in all, I think Key of Heaven can be a nice addtion to any PSP collection. It's an accessible, quite good looking game, with good controls, that keeps you busy for at least 15 to 20 hours.

This is much, much better than the frankly poor first-wave RPGs that came out with the PSP. It's very pretty, in proper 3D with nicely chunky combat based around an engaging system under which attacks are pre-prepared using icons that you collect as you travel around - sort of a Pokemon with combat moves rather than creatures. The storyline is rather bonkers, but it's all voice acted and the impressive cut-scenes use the game engine which is a tribute to how good the engine is.Down sides? Two, really - there aren't any puzzles to speak of -it's just a matter of getting from A to B, fighting as you go, in order to find/speak to character C.There's a fair bit of running around talking to identical characters to find the one who triggers the next quest. The main problem is that the combat, although enjoyable, suffers from an inability to block properly that had to be counterbalanced by massively overpowered magic attacks that work like smart bombs. From quite early in the game you can basically kill anything without breaking a sweat by running away, charging your magic meter, then hitting smart bomb. If you try to play without using the smart bomb approach, you get smashed to a pulp in short time. It's still really good fun to play, but there's little sense of drawn-out battle using different techniques - just smart bomb and slash. If a game like this can be done so soon in the PSP's life, then we are in for some real treats. It wouldn't be too much of a step from this to a full 3D RPG - a World of Warcraft-lite, or a Morrowind/Oblivion, all of our own. Time will tell.Recommended.

Chinese fantasy swordplay or wuxia (literal translation: 'martial hero') is a genre that as of yet has not been well-represented in videogames. Key of Heaven is set in the land of Ouka, which is inspired by various Asian cultures from Japan to China and beyond, and is a land remincient of wuxia themes such as swordplay, chivalry, adventure and magics.'Key of Heaven' can be a little repetitive, (comprising of just A to B story goals), but the story itself is intriguing and full of mystery. The gameplay utilises a standard J-RPG approach, which is effective and simple. However, the game really shines with its solid use of swordplay, offering the unique ability to customise your own move-sets to battle henchmen and monsters you encounter.By collecting scrolls and rearranging them you can create super-effective elemental chains to devastate your opponents based on their weaknesses; combining role-playing strategy with the enjoyable hack-and-slash mechanics. The visuals are great for its era with beautiful locales to travel through and impressive cities to visit, although you may want to stick to the Japanese dub, as the voice-acting is sub-par.All in all, an essential game for hack and slash enthusiasts and most importantly those who are fans of wuxia.

First of all, this game is actually quite a good game, because you get to create your own bugei scroll (Your moves basically). But it is quite an easy game, i got it and then completed it within 2 weeks but those 2 weeks of that game was quite good. The reason is that its quite easy is because all the enemies are weak, even the last boss only took me 2 tries before i utterly smashed him. Also it seems to go quite quickly paced, with Shinbu (The main character) suddenly in about an hour of gaming becoming alot stronger than the enemies. But dont get me wrong, this game got me hooked for hours on end. So if you are looking for a reasonably easy, but a quite fun game to play on,then this is the one for you!

A great looking game with real depth in terms of story line and gameplay. Being able to customize your own attacks using free style is really impressive addition and takes the genre to another level as opposed to following suit and being another worn out rpg. A definate addition to anyones psp collection.
