Joseph Joseph Dial Storage Container with Datable Lid, Green, 1.2 LitreJoseph Joseph are producers of high quality kitchen ware and have now added dateable food container for the fridge or freezer. The idea behind this is to make it easy to record either the date by which the contents are to be used or the date you freeze it and this should prevent food being wasted and thrown away because it is too old - something we have all experienced. To facilitate this there is a mechanism in the lid which allows the day and month to be set. The dial is easy to set - turn one way for the day and the other way for the month. The whole container is made of good quality plastic with the lid being quite thick (to house the date mechanism). The base is microwaveable but not the top and both are dishwasher friendly although I tend to hand wash the top.The container on test was a 1.2 litre which is not that big but would hold 2 to 3 good servings of whatever you want to keep. There are other sizes available with both larger and smaller capacities.Once filled and the date set, it can be put away in the freezer and you will then only have to check the date to see how long it remains usable. There is no facility to add what the contents are which for short term use will not be a problem but something on the top for a short description would have made it perfect. Of course you can write on the top with a wax pencil or add a label but that rather defeats the uniqueness of these dateable containers - why not write the date too ???? Other than that it does the job very well and if you are going to consider this system then one container will not be enough.- several will be required and that can make them expensive. This 1.2 litre box will cost you about £11.00 and a five piece package (1 x 2.4 litre, 2 x 1.0 litre and 2 x 0.7 litre) will be around £45.00. True the quality is good and I know you will be happy using them but £40- £50 needs consideration for freezer boxes. They will however also last many years. If you can justify the outlay you will get very useful containers with a unique dating system. If not try researching through Amazon's many other options for food containers. You will get a competitive alternative but perhaps not the same quality and of course you will need to write the date on yourself.

Many years ago, when watching the first series of Dragon's Den, I said to my wife that I'd had an idea for food storage containers in which the lid had a dial which could be rotated to show the date on which food had been placed in the container. This was after cleaning out the freezer and throwing away frozen leftovers because we didn't know how long they had been there. The idea didn't go down well with my wife, who pointed out that's it is simple enough to just write a label and stick it on the container, and I forgot all about it. Now it seems that I was somewhat ahead of my time, as I find myself reviewing precisely the same thing that I thought might be a clever invention. This particular container is quite small (it holds 1.2 litres, which is about three standard-sized mugs of material). The container is made of quite thick plastic, and the lid of VERY thick green plastic - which it has to be in order to house the dial. The dial can be set to show both the month (in numerical format) and the date (again, numerical format, between 1 and 31). Rotating the dial one way changes the month, rotating it the other way changes the day. Pretty nifty. The only confusing thing for me is whether the container is microwavable. The label on the bottom of the container states that it is microwavable (and also dishwasher safe to 50C); however in raised text on the lid itself are the words 'unsuitable for use in microwave'. I take this to mean that the base can be microwaved and the lid can't, but I haven't dared try it yet just in case!Other than this ambiguity regarding possible use, this is a really good thing. The dial and lid are sturdy and obviously well-made, so you would imagine they will last a long time. Just beware that it's not the biggest container in the world (although I do see that other sizes are available).

Over the last few years we have replaced most of our old storage containers with ones from Joseph Joseph as we have found them to be some of the best on the market these days. I hadn't seen the Dial Storage range of freezer containers until I tried this large 2.4 Litre model and I am quite impressed – a simple idea well executed. It is a good quality BPA-free storage container designed for use in the freezer or fridge with the clever addition of a day and month dial on the lid to help to keep track of what needs using first – set the current or the “Use By” date. The mechanism works a bit like setting the date on your watch (well, my watch anyway) - simply rotate the dial anti-clockwise to set the day and clockwise to set the month, quick and easy. This model holds a good amount at 2.4L (2.5 qt) and measures 27.8 x 18.6 x 7.2 cm so is quite shallow and should fit in your freezer quite easily. The tough base can be used in the freezer and microwave and is dishwasher safe, the lid is more delicate and is safe in the freezer, but not the microwave, and should be washed by hand. This is a good design that is well made and decent value and is a product range we will buy more of in the future.

This is a very nice product aimed at the more paranoid amongst us but I'm sure most other people would appreciate the practicality too. The box itself is very sturdy and because of the date mechanism the lid is heavier and thicker than a normal Tupperware type offering. This does not make it difficult to open or close however, in fact it involves less effort than cheaper items. Talking of the date mechanism, this is truly ingenious with just one dial that you rotate either way to change the month and day – clockwise for month, anti-clock for day. If you go too far you have to continue round again or you will find yourself altering the wrong one!The size of the reviewed box is 1.2l which isn’t that huge – it will fit in a packet of 4 snack port pies as a guide. I think you would need a lot of these to create your own “system” in your fridge which could work out expensive but if you are concerned about use-by dates then these are a quality item that you would definitely benefit from.

We are a big fan of Joseph Joseph and have a lot of their products and find them fantastically well designed. This is a great container, plenty big enough to store two portions of chilli for example. You turn the dial one way for the day and the other way for the month so you have an 'at a glance' use by date.To make this product perfect and get 5* I feel it needs a slot for a label as I don't want to stick sticker on containers but I can never remember what I freeze otherwise - so maybe a little slot for a dry wipe label would be good - that would make it perfect! That said, are perfect for storing items in the fridge - I currently have a pack of peppered mackerel in mine, which otherwise would be stinking out the fridge - in the fridge it is easy enough to open the lid and look at the contents, so it is fine for that.I need more of these!

This storage container has a very interesting innovation which has to make both fridge and freezer storage less of a Russian roulette with respect to safe storage time. It is clearly a very good quality product: sturdy and strong container and glorious, flexible, lime green lid. And, best of all, it is BPA free.It is superbly practical in that its flat shape means it will fit neatly in your fridge, freezer or microwave - and the container handles all three perfectly, however the lid does not like the microwave or dishwasher. And then you get to the little dial on the top. Inspired idea! Has a day/month option and you change each by turning the white disc left or right - so you can easily record the date you put something in the fridge or freezer. And to top it all off, it is quite beautiful to look at. Funky and a bit retro and rather lovely!

This is a good storage container. The lid fits firmly and securely, much better than other storage containers that I bought from a large swedish retailer that shall remain nameless (but has lovely meatballs!). The dial is really easy to use and a very good idea. Saves having to write on the lid or, as I usually do, use stickers or labels. It will fit easily in your fridge, even small size ones. I have used it for storing dinner and leftovers in the fridge as well as some biscuits in a cupboard and had no problems with it. I haven't noticed any smells leaking from it either which is good, saves stinking up the fridge with my dinner!I don't like the green colour. It looks a bit too 70's ish - no offence to anyone who likes this, it's just personal opinion. I suppose it doesn't really matter anyway as it spends most of the time in the fridge.

A full range of these containers are now available to suit different food products. This one is ideally suited to sliced ham or similar sized meats that have an expiry date. The expiry date display is nice and large and I can read it no problems without the need of my reading glasses. The rotary dial with a ratchet action which you rotate clockwise to set the month and anti-clockwise to set the day is easy to set.The inside of the lid is sealed from the day/date mechanism to avoid any contamination, my only concern is drying the top after a wash and to make sure it dried properly I dried it standing on one edge so hopefully any water entering via the gap around the dial will drain (the lid cannotbe microwaved and top rack of dishwasher only).See my pictures of both side of the lid.I may indeed order one bacon size.

Good quality food storage box from Joseph Joseph. Just about big enough for storing a small family meal, or plenty of leftovers. I really like the day/date function that has a dial on the lid which you turn one way for month, the other way for day. Very clever, and so much better than sticky labels, and an excellent way of encouraging people to store and not throw away.!! The only downsides are that the lid cannot be used in the microwave, and the price, which at nearly £10 is a hefty sum for a small reuseable food storage box. if you want to invest in this system of food storage, it works out cheaper (per box) by buying a larger set. The box itself is sturdy, and I am sure it will last for years.I would definitely recommend this product, but on economy grounds, as part of a larger set.

Handy size for that left over lasagne or whatever. Good, strong, sturdy. Turn the white wheel to put in the day, turn the other way to put in the month. It is a bit frustrating if you go over the date as you automatically turn the wheel back and then you lose the date you input for the month/day you sorted earlier. Still, some folks are not so hamfisted. Good for freezer foods that you need to know dates of (though a sticky freezer label works just as well and you can add the name of the dish).I know people who use smaller versions of this for baby food so dating will be very helpful but not sure I I will find it so.It is a handy size, large but flattish. So a good addition to fridge and freezer containers.

This is a very good storage container that everybody would find useful I imagine. The list is a solid but a soft'ish material (that is apparently not microwaveable) with a nice dial that you can put the date and the month so you can remember when you put the food in it. The bottom part is microwaveable (slightly confusing), but again obviously a very good material. I'd buy 2 or 3 more of them so you can keep different things and pile them in the fridge-freezer. I have several other Joseph Joseph products, and they're not cheap but I always feel good and think you get what you pay for. Really recommended to all the kitchen users.

This dial storage range for Joseph Joseph comes in a variety of sizes so you can have well coordinated, well organised and good looking fridge contents. It's sturdy, dishwasher proof (only on the top shelf up to 50 degrees centigrade) and this size is ideal for when I make an extra lasagne or cottage pie. The lid fits on securely without fiddling about, ideal for those who have difficulties with grip and general hand mobility. The date display is clear so there will hopefully be less wastage as a result. I've been impressed with this and I intend to investigate more from the Joseph Joseph range, so good they named it twice...

A brilliant idea! The storage box is a good size for a large amount of leftover food, or for storing a large number of, say, cheeses. The dial on the lid allows you to date the day you filled the box. The dial makes the lid heavier than usual, but it doesn't stop you using it in the fridge, freezer or dishwasher (the lid shouldn't go in the microwave while the body of the box can!).The lid fits snugly and is a vibrant green, perfect to match any other Joseph Joseph items you have in your kitchen.

21.5.2016

This is a very nice storage box, with the facility to set the date the box was put into storage. Turning the dial one way sets the date, the other way sets the month (very clever). The boxes are freezer safe, but only the base is microwave-safe and dishwasher safe. This is a pity really! The other reason for taking one star off is the price. It would seem you have to pay a premium price to get the set date dial facility

These are very smart and good quality. I really appreciate the clever dating system for freezing leftovers and not having to wonder how long they've been in the freezer for. I've also used it to store opened packets of ham and I've set it go show the use by date. Finally, I tried it with chcolate biscuits and they stayed fresh but you do have to be careful to ensure the lid is fully on all the way round of course.
