At this time of year a Summer bin laden with the peelings, cores and detritus of organic matter can quickly become offensive to the nose, and separating the various organic, non-organics and recyclables becomes an unpleasant chore. What one needs is a sturdy, multi-compartmented, easily accessible and washable waste disposal container - enter the "Joseph Joseph Totem Compact 40-Litre Waste Separation & Recycling Unit" (henceforth referred to here as the "bin" in order to save time and space!).The first thing one has to say is just how impressive looking it is. None of your garish plastic flip-top jobs here, this is a sturdy metal unit in a smooth gloss graphite grey finish, all parts being impressive in the quality of construction and finish. The dimensions of 75cm x 35cm x 30 (29.5" x 13.75" x 11.75") ensure it is elegantly slim and having a small footprint, whilst containing two 10ltr containers in an upper and lower sections - the upper is accessed by a press flip-up button that releases the lid, the lower sliding out on rails - and very smoothly, with no hint of supermarket trolley wheel syndrome; it glides (completely) in and out very smoothly (given a level surface, of course). The actual containers are hi-vis orange plastic that easily lift in and out of the unit to empty and to clean. There is a smaller inner unit with a lid for messy food waste, holes for plastic bags (plastic bags, really? That does rather seem to go against the whole recycling ethos here) but the unit does allow a variety of options when it comes to sorting your refuse and recyclables. Also, rather importantly, there is a filter unit in the lid to neutralise odours from within. A filter is provided to use in the receptacle immediately, and I found it to be quite effective. Obviously there is a limit to its efficiency, one can't expect it to neutralise powerful odours that have been left rather too long in the bin - but I found it sufficient to prevent odours in the kitchen when the lid is closed, so worthwhile getting replacements for when it needs changing. In a JJ branded ziploc bag along with the filter and instructions there are a number of various JJ branded compostable bin liners provided, although they are of random fit and one can probably find more appropriately sized liners elsewhere - certainly preferable to the suggested plastic bag use. Personally I divide the units thus; "wet" food waste (scraps, teabags, peelings etc) go into the smaller lidded container in the top unit, other recyclables like cans bottles and cartons go in the larger top unit, non-recyclable or compostable waste goes into the bottom container. This is a very convenient division for me, but one can utilise it to one's preference and can even use liner bags to further subdivide the containers. In practical terms one has to say that this is simply not going to have the capacity to deal with the waste output of an average household, but for singles or small households that don't generate a lot of waste this would be absolutely ideal. The capacity as a whole is good, but the necessity to subdivide in order to properly utilise the unit to its best advantage means that this bin is only practical for smaller households without a large waste output. In such a household however, the capacity, division and minimal footprint make it a very useful item. One has to say that on pure appearance it exudes class and quality, the shiny and robust metal unit being practically a work of art compared to it's predecessor, the scruffy old plastic fliptop. Finally, the price - even for such quality - does seem a little steep, particularly given it's ultimate limitation due to limited container capacity and would have me carefully considering its value. Yet if one can afford it, and it is sufficient for the needs of the user - then I would highly recommend it as a kitchen upgrade of top style, quality and utility.

2 bed maisonette here, separate kitchen with small seating space (cafe table size). The unit itself comes in a huge box, wrapped in plastic, the bin inside padded with the worst kind of styrofoam, but they have to prevent carelessness when shipping I guess. The top bin is meant for landfill and food recycling. It comes with a few 'starter' bags that fit perfectly - too perfectly if you ask me. There's almost no extra length for the full-size bag, meaning if the bin is full, the bag will not close short of compressing it. So we use 50L drawstring bags from Asda or wherever else and they fit perfectly. The recycling compartment (bottom), has slits in-situ so that you can use standard-size plastic carrier bags, which we do, to separate plastic/bottles/tins from paper/cardboard. This works nicely, and the whole orange units can be lifted out without any vacuum effect occurring. This is on wheels and doesn't clip in to place, or anything like that, you literally just push it back in and it stays there. It stays perfectly in place, doesn't roll or anything, though sometimes you may need to give it a tap to line everything up (if you're OCD about appearances). There are two downsides so far as we can tell, after a solid month of use:1) The food recycling just isn't large enough. Compared to the council-provided bin, it's just too small for us (couple and young baby). Plus, as it sits inside the top compartment, it will mingle too closely with landfill that may be stinky or nasty (eg. nappies), for my liking, needing washing up frequently. If you use the bottom bin, then there's far less space for recycling...2) The rear literally looked like it was flush - in all the photos and marketing shots on their website, there was never a clear picture showing that the rear part sticked out. So it won't sit flush against the wall, but this is minor. Then of course the PRICE. My arse hurts, even at £125 that I paid, I'm still a bit sore.It sadly hasn't completely unified the recycling, but I still argue with my Mrs to use the included food unit. She cooks more though, so she's the boss on that one.Overall though, this is larger than I expected - even having measured it up - but it's removed the need for bags and boxes and reduced the frequency with which we need to go downstairs to the communal bins and empty. So all in all, very happy with this and highly recommended [if you can get it at a good price].

This is a very fancy looking piece of kit. I love storage solutions and anything that hides mess, and this would appear to solve that problem. It's a very expensive solution, but it is innovative and sturdy so that makes up for a bit. We've used it for just over 2.5 weeks and only have 2 people in the house. We use this in addition to our normal bins, it couldn't replace our current bins as it doesn't store enough, but we have loads of recycling all the time! It comes with all the bags you'll need which is handy.-- AestheticsIt's very pleasing to look at. The black and orange design is pretty nice and would suit many colour schemes. It has a semi shiny finish, however does get super fingerprinty on the top so constantly needs a bit of a buff on the lid.-- StorageThere is no way we'd use this to store normal rubbish. We do not need to be emptying bins that often! The two main storage compartments only store 20l. It is also in my opinion much too nice to be storing general rubbish so we are storing our two different types of recycling each (to match our two collection recycling boxes). The 3l food caddy is sort of handy but the lid is detached and doesn't really stay on there very securely (it keeps falling in the main bit) - a flip lid would have been better, but what can you do.-- Ease of Use and CleanlinessAll storage compartments are easy to empty and clean. The top one has push to open top, and the bottom one rolls out on wheels smoothly and slots back in with just as much ease. The two large orange containers lift out, the food caddy lifts out too and has a hook handle. The outside can we wiped down and generally it's fairly easy to keep clean I'd say. You also get the fancy odour filters you put in the top lid so the food waste doesn't stink out your room, which is great! It's not very easy to move around as a unit though as it is supported with a metal frame without wheels.I'd say it suits a single person in a flat or somebody who is happy to keep moving their waste and recycling outside and just wants a nice compact smell-free unit on the inside. It's very expensive, I have no idea what audience would spend that much money on this, but if you are into smart and expensive decor maybe this is something you could show off in your kitchen.

This is pretty fantastic in my book. I was forever piling either cardboard behind the usual bin or at the side of the sink with the empty cans, bottles and bits of foil waiting for me to make that trek outside to the recycle bin when enough had built up to make the journey worthwhile. On top of that I (well we), would put peelings and food waste in a small container – again next to the sink and even with its sealed lid after a while the contents used to start to pong, especially when you are stuffing it full so the lid wouldn’t shut just trying to avoid that trip.Well this is great. It’s made up of two 20 ltr square plastic containers with a smaller lidded one that can be attached to the inside of one of them. Both sit inside larger metal containers (bins?). The top container has a hinged lid similar to a regular bin while the lower container slots in beneath and is on wheels. I would say the top one is geared more towards waste that has a tendency to pong mainly due to the hinged lid and also the fact that the lid has a filter on it to help stop bad odours. The smaller one fits inside this one and has its own separate lid, the design of this one is quite nifty as if you put a bag inside it the handle can be used to thread a portion of the bag through to make the bio degradable poly bag taught around the rim.The lower bin on its wheels fits easily and neatly below the upper bin into the “docking area”. The fact that it is on its own wheels is super useful as you can wheel it to a particular area where you are working and just drop your waste straight in rather than going back and forth. The belting dark grey finish which really works well with the bright orange bins makes it something to look at, it is really nicely finished. The orange bins by the way can be removed for emptying/cleaning. It fits right next to our regular bin for regular unrecyclable waste. At the moment we are using the bottom bin for cardboard/paper and the top bin for metal/plastic/glass and the smaller container for food waste. It might be a pricey unit but it saves floor space when compared to others that sit containers side by side. Either way It seems to be working brilliantly at the moment and no more cluttered worktops.

As stated in the headline, this bin is amazingly easy on the eye, with its stylish lines and contrasting orange interior. So, the unit has 2 large multi-use compartments with easy-to-remove & clean interiors (they even have little cut-outs near the base to stop filled bags getting stuck due to a vacuum forming!) removable+ repositionable lidded caddy for food waste. The top section is lidded and has an integrated odour control filter (this needs to be replaced at 3-monthly intervals, £8 for a pack of two). There is one included. This is attached to a legged frame. The bottom section has integrated casters underneath, to allow ease of sliding in and out from underneath the fixed, top section. This part does not have a lid. It also doesn't line up particularly evenly, which I would expect given the price tag. A little wiggling into place can help, but I think the actual construction design limits how close the tolerances can be.The food caddy has an integral clip, allowing you to fit it in the corner of whichever section you like, which is nice and very thoughtful design. All section use custom-fit liners, which are purchasable from the JJ website, and I guess Amazon. They come in various sizes, but this bin includes three each of the IW6 + IW2 liners.Overall, would I recommend this bin? Well, it all depends on how much money you have. As I said earlier, it looks very, very good. There are some extremely thoughtful aspects to it as well. However, if you use the recommended JJ liners, odour reducers etc. then it's going to be an extremely expensive prospect to maintain. As their bags are somewhere in the region of £7-9 per 50, depending on size. I have no doubt, the bags are good quality - perfectly sized for the compartments, but I think after the first couple of tries, I'd be looking to find a cheaper alternative. So, in summary. It's a great bin - good looking and extremely practical, but expensive to run if you go with the OEM eco-system. If you find a super-market alternative, then it might be a lovely addition to your new kitchen. You probably won't find a nicer looking bin!

I was overwhelmed by the size of this bin when it arrived, but assumed most of it would be packaging. I was wrong! The bin is generously sized and quite stable and solid. It comes pre-built, so no building or fiddling around with fittings. The stone colour is more of a cream in colour, and whilst it is very smart, I worry that it may look like it was meant to be white. Colour, in the end is down to preference and kitchen design so each to their own.I was impressed with the compartment sizes – they are suitable for a weeks waste for me and my partner. There is a nice neat area for the compostable waste too, which can be moved around to suit your preference. The drawers are smooth, fluid and easy to pull out, however, the handle on the bottom compartment is hindered by the inner orange bin, this could be trickier to maneuver and manage for those with larger fingers. The height of the bin is suitable which prevents having to bend over all of the time. I prefer to have the recycling waste in the bottom drawer as it was easier for me to navigate and remove; with the general waste and compost in the top section, we were able to make more use of the filter in the lid – which kept the whole thing very fresh.Included with the bin are a pack of trial bags and a filter to use, which is great to get you started. Whilst “normal” bin bags will suffice, they do not fit quite as well (surprise surprise) as the ones designed for them. The bin has marking inside should you forget which types of bags you will require; the suitable bags and filters are as follows:• IW6 30-Litre General Waste Liners - Pack of 20 (Amazon product-code: B07PT7VL7Y).• IW2 4-Litre Compostable Bags - Pack of 40 (Amazon product-code: B00UYAN0DA).• Carbon Filter - Pack of 2 (Amazon product-code: B00UYAMYT6).Depending how quickly you go through bags, the cost to maintain using this bin with genuine parts, could get quite costly. All in all, it’s a great bin, as great as a bin can be – and if you’re looking to treat yourself to a stylish, good use of space bin – I would say it’s worth the money in the long run.

I was quite apprehensive about this bin because its so expensive, but i love it.My kitchen is very small, only 10ft x 6ft but this is tall and small so is a perfect size for my kitchen. The bin is split into 2 x 30 litre compartments. The bottom one is on wheels and so slides in and out of the frame very easily. The top one is accessed via a lid, you press the silver part, and the lid comes up by itself. It raises slowly so no chance of hitting yourself on the lid. Both compartments have orange plastic inner buckets that have spaces around the corners so you can lift them out easier. The bin comes with a small sample of black bin liners that fit both buckets, but you are only given 3 to try.If you want more the bags are IW6, and they cost 8 quid for 20. This is my only negative, they cost far more than i am prepared to pay for bin liners, so i bought a roll of 40 lemon scented ones from the pound shop which fit perfectly. You also get a small compost corner that sits in the top corner of the upper bucket. It comes with a lid. You are given a sample of 3 bags. The replacements are IW2 and cost 8 quid for 50. They are quite thick and don't leak. You also have a carbon filter that you pop in the top for odour control. The replacements cost 8 quid for 2. I've no idea how long they last but the more frequent you empty the bin, the less odours it will soak up.Both of the buckets are very easy to clean. They were clean with just fairy liquid and a sponge, because the outside is plastic, it is also extremely easy to keep clean with just some anti bacterial spray and a cloth. The colour is classed as stone, but its a very light grey with orange buckets. It looks very smart.Personally i love the bin, its smart and sleek, and the 10 year guarantee is a great reason to buy it, my only negative is the cost of the replacement bags and filters.

Joseph Joseph call this a "Waste Separation & Recycling Unit", but I'll be calling it a bin for this review. It's well made and stylish in design. As the lid has a space for an odour filter (included) I guess food and smelly stuff should be in the top caddy. Despite the lid of the food waste caddy and odour filter you could still smell chips the next morning. Two days in and already the both caddies are full. This tells me I'm using too many cans and plastic bottles in my daily life. Would be advisable to invest in a can crusher to use the space more wisely. One thing I found, if the lower bin is over full, if you wheel it out, it lifts the inner top bin up and the lid pops up.You do get a small selection of bags included with the bin,but they are an added expense that should be factored in. Luckily the pick recycling bags given out by the council fit, though they're twice the size of the branded Joseph Joseph bags. Also, when the pink bags are removed from a full caddy, they're only half full. This is where the bin's target demographic is indicated. Many years ago I rented a small one bed studio flat. This bin would have fitted in prefectly. It has a small footprint, double bins and a food waste area. Also, one person doesn't generate much waste. The food recycling and rubbish bags would go into communial bins (you'd drop them in as you left for work). For a house with black, pink and clear plastic bags left on the doorstep for the refuse men to collect, this isn't useful. For a house with multiple occupiers, it's not big enough (where would you store the full bags before collection?).Joseph Joseph aren't alone in having this type of double Waste Separation & Recycling Units, however their models are considerably more expensive than some of the rival manufacturers.

When I first reviewed the original version of this bin shortly after it's debut a few years ago it was absolutely the best in market and unique in it's type. Now, a few years on we have a new edition of the device and in my opinion, it's better than ever.First a bit of a recap on what made the original bin great, which applies to this one as well. There are two separate main compartments, with the ability to also add a food waste caddy and divide up the bottom one - so for most complicated recycling schemes you can do what you need to do in the kitchen rather than separate later. Both look pretty stylish, are sturdy in construction, have odour reduction build in and are generally easy to clean (more on this later). It was already a great premium bin option. So what's changed? Well on that cleaning front I mentioned, the change of materials to remove the stainless steel, making the button external and the entire bottom section come out have removed a number of the corners that previously used to be difficult to clean. The shape of the internal bins has changed slightly so they are easier to get in and out, also to secure a bag inside thanks to some well placed slits. Odour no longer builds up inside thanks to new ventilation and the mix between the two sections changed to allow for more recycling and use of standard plastic bags - though for an ideal fit you still need specific ones.Overall, this update has made an already great bin even better. If you're looking for a way to encourage recycling, streamline a dirty bin area or just make your waste disposal better, look no further - this is a great option.

The Joseph Joseph rubbish and recycling bin is very functional. It looks great - very minimalistic, it sparks joy! It also saves space. Previously we had large 75L waste bin (that was way too big) + couple containers for recycling: one large one for tins and jars, smaller one for batteries and medical recycling and a bag for cardboards. Now everything fits within the unit, which is amazing. The top comes with odour filter, therefore the top is for waste, while the bottom part is for recycling. The small caddy can be placed both in the top or bottom bin. I think it is meant for the food waste but as our council does not collect this type of waste separately yet and I needed something for batteries and inhalers,I placed it in the bottom part. I’m really pleased with this bin, it is perfect from the esthetic point of view.Have in mind that the opening of the top bin can be a bit tricky and may take a while to figure it out. It turns out our bin opens much easier when I elbow the handle than when I try to open it with my hand, which is not really that bad. I usually have dirty or wet hands in the kitchen and use my elbow to open the bin anyway, and the Joseph Joseph Totem Max has a perfect hight for this. The only annoyance is that I haven’t found yet any standard 30L rubbish bags that would fit as nicely as the Joseph Joseph bags. Couple of them is provided for the bin but if you want to get more, a pack of 20 bags costs at the moment £8 which is way more than I would like to pay for bin bags.

This is a gorgeous addition to the kitchen of a smaller household, it’s just isn’t practical for larger families.4.5 stars for this, rounded up to five .First things first. The capacity of 40 L is a total capacity for both bins. If you have a lot of recycling, you may find yourself making very regular trips to your large recycling bin with the small bin.The bin features a small lidded caddy for food waste. Many authorities collect food waste separately, so this may well be useful for some people, to separate this particular kind of waste from others. It’s quite a small capacity. If you find yourself wasting large quantities of food, this won’t be suitable. Most of us now focus on keeping leftovers,or batch cooking to minimise waste, so this may not be quite an issue.Something that may be an issue is finding suitable bags for the non-recyclable rubbish , the small 20 L capacity is too big for a pedal bin bag, and too small for a larger bag.If you fit your large bin with a wheelie bin bag, then this won’t be such an issue. The bin can be simply emptied into it.The study orange plastic bin liners, are very 70s, but easy to remove and refit. The bin itself has gorgeous wipe clean lines. The lift up lid operates with a gentle press. This may be ideal for people who are downsizing, rather than those starting out, who may well need a larger bin as their household expands. It’s got a 10 year guarantee, and I can easily see it lasting this. It may possibly even see me out.

This is one of those products you never knew you needed until you have it. This is a generously sized unit with two bins fitted vertically in a frame - upon removing from the packaging it seems very big and bulky but, due to the vertical design, I managed to find a space for it in the kitchen which doesn't have a lot of room for extra units. The top bin is used exclusively for recyclables (probably holds about 3 - 4 days worth in a 3 person household) and I use the bottom one for glass - saves having empty glass jars/bottles spread around the kitchen waiting to be taken out to the garage before taking for recycling. The small caddy I actually use for storing dog biscuits in - the large bag of biscuits is stored in another part of the house and it's easier to fill the caddy from the bag and keep that in the kitchen. So far the only downsides has been trying to remove the plastic bin from the main container in the bottom bin - when it is full I just can't seem to be able to get a grip on it and I think this is because the glass makes it go slightly out of shape - when empty I can just take it out with no problems. Luckily though the bottom bin has wheels on it so it is fairly easy to wheel it out to the garage and empty. The other downside is when you press the lever to open the top bin lid it doesn't always open first time so you have to press it again or nudge it up with your hand - this does seem to occur more when the bin is quite full.

Pros:* Combining two bins into one saves precious floorspace in my small kitchen* The odour filter seems to help reduce smells and vent the bin to prevent humidity buildup* The removable inserts are handy. They come out easily and they're pretty strong* The bins are a good size & shape for most household waste - meaning you can fit more in. e.g. A4 sheets will lay flat in the recycling bin* A full bin bag fits snuggly in my wheelie bin. I can fit more rubbish in there than with my old peddle binCons:* Having the food waste slot inside the main bin is a bad idea. When you take it out, the rubbish around it shifts and then you need to paw around inside the bin to put it back. As the caddy is quite deep, the bin doesn't even need to be half full before this becomes a problem. JJ's suggestion that you can just take it out and plonk it on your worktop (presumably coated in all kinds of bin juice if you keep it in the top compartment) and then gently nestle it back inside plainly doesn't really match with reality.* The Joseph Joseph bin liners are currently approx 20x the price of the equivalent generic bin liners. Crazy. Either fork over the money, or deal with slightly ill-fitting bags. I opted for the latterOverall:The pros comfortably outweigh the cons, just a shame the food waste part of the bin isn't as well thought out as the rest.

What can I say about this bin, but wow, it looks good! Besides the point we has to reorganise our entire kitchen just to fit it in. It is huge! It comes in two parts, a top bin that is attached to the whole frame and a lower bin that slides out on wheels. Everything about these bins has been designed to perfection, the motion on the top lid is sublime, you have a odour filter to stop any nasty whiffs and the motion on the wheels of the slide out bottom unit is incredibly smooth. There are some bad points though, the official bag refills cost a small fortune, which should come as no small surprise, as this is a luxury item and has the price to boot. But you can find alternative cheaper options in supermarkets,if you look around. As for the odour filter, I am sure that is worth investing in, unless you find a decent air freshener to fit.But besides that, this item is one sexy beast which compliments any modern day kitchen and you have the name J&J to reassure you, that this is a GOOD product. So whether you use it all as recycling bin (which I think is overkill) or one for recycling and the other for keeping cleaning products in, this item is a welcome addition to any kitchen. Even if you have to pay for an extension to fit it in. Well recommended and sexier than the Hoff.

You might think it’s quite hard to get excited about a bin...well you’ve obviously not got a Joseph Joseph totem! This is quite simply the best bin ever.I had a bin that had two compartments side by side, to allow me to separate recycling and normal waste, as well as a separate food waste bin.Buying the totem has allowed me to replace these bins, while increasing my waste capacity and using less floor space. There is masses of space in these bins, but due to the vertical nature of them they don’t take up much room. The food waste caddy is a bit on the small side, however I actually quite like this,as it encourages me to empty it more frequently and avoid having a smelly bag of rotten food in the bin for days. The bins are really easy to take out to empty or to clean.Everything about the bin feels quality and it comes with a 10 year warranty. The price of this item is high, I managed to get it on a prime week deal for about £105. However you can pay £150 or more for these.I would normally potentially mark an item down in a review for a high price point and while I do feel £150 is a lot of money for a bin this bin is the best. And sometime you get what you pay for, so if you can afford it, or can get a decent deal then buy it and then you can feel excited about bins!
