I LOVE this bin - we bought it at the beginning of Feb. 2012 and it is perfect for myself and daughter. As we recycle it takes a while to fill the bin up; we're vegetarian and so no meat goes in the bin and veg refuse goes in compost, so the bin does not start to smell. The plus points for us are: the wheels - I really like being able to move it around the kitchen-diner easily. The lid mechanism - you can fully open the lid when it is next to a table and sweep all bits into bin without any falling on the floor (good if you are creative). You also don't have to touch the lid to open the bin if your hands are covered with flour or earth (foot-pedal)and then the lid closes itself automatically with a very nice action. We just use black bin liners and when it is full we put it in the wheelie-bin - no problemsThe only negative is: that the bottom of the bin is not flat and so I dread the day when a bin-bag breaks, but because there is very little heavy rubbish put in the bin now (due to recycling) and also there is very little damp rubbish and so if it did explode then it probably wouldn't be a problem at all.Things you should consider, but which don't bother me: the black bin liner hangs over the edge as there is no inner bin.The lid is quite big and so if you want it to go under a counter you need to factor in the dimensions, so that it can open enough to get rubbish into it.I think there was something a bit tricky about putting the lid on when we received the bin, but I recall you just have to get it in position and push/squeeze blinkin' hard - after that bit of exertion it is all plain sailing. We have the back of the bin against the wall and as the lid goes up it rubs against the wall at the back, which has not made a mark on the wall yet, but possibly will in time. It's nothing a touch-up of paint can't fix and so not a big issue for me.I was initially a bit concerned about it's look, but I actually find it unobtrusive and unusual looking.Another positive that I've just realised is that the bin lid never gets dirty - that maybe because it's a pedal, but I think it is also because the bin's opening is soooooo big, which is another reason you should consider whether you put it under the counter or not.I think the bin design could be improved by having some kind of handle on the front to allow one to pull it out in order to empty it and manoeuvre it, but I can live without that. You would have to pull it out by the lock if it was under the counter.

We previously had a larger 60L SimpleHuman bin, and that has served us well for over 10 years. The only thing that broke in the 10 years was the closing clasp (due to normal wear), but even that was no problem because you are supplied with spares.60L is a bit big for a couple with no children in the house, so we wanted something considerably smaller with the same quality, and this bin looks to be perfect. This 40L bin is up to the usual SimpleHuman quality, and has a nice damped lid action. It is double lined, having an inner plastic bucket, so is waterproof (and pretty airtight) for the person who is going to throw in soggy items, food or perishables into it.Downsides? No handle on the inner bin.Not a problem for me as this is a small bin so doesn’t warrant it. The outer bin’s lid hinge doubles as a handle (it has a recessed area for your fingers to go so you can lift the whole bin up without coming into contact with the potentially dirty bits, and for the more fastidious, allows you to clean the outer shell without putting fingerprints on it).Cost. Supermarket own brands now do SimpleHuman copies for much cheaper. I’ll leave it to you to decide whether they are built to the same quality and will last 10 years! (We had two 60L Asda bins for our office kitchen at work, and the lid of one of them went after only 3 months, so my impression is that the copies are not designed for the same lifetime). The damped close action may be a bit much for some, especially the kitchen cook who is constantly throwing bits and pieces into the bin (although most cooks tend to have a waste bowl on the cooking surface for this, so possibly only an issue if you are doing it wrong!).Who would buy this?Anyone looking for a second, smaller bin (home office, bathroom, upstairs landing). The green household looking for two kitchen bins for waste/recyclables or waste/compostable. The fact that you can choose the bin colour is helpful here! The small family or couple looking for a smaller bin (one of the perks of the kids finally flying the roost!).Overall, a nice bin from the quality end of the market. Built to last, and looks nice (especially if you match the colour with the rest of the room).I have used this bin for 6 months before reviewing it.

I don't often leave reviews but I spent so long looking for a decent kitchen bin that I'm inclined to do so. This is a nice bin! Looks good, it's slim so fits neatly next to cupboards without taking up a lot of space width wise. The depth is great for scraping food from plates - easy to drag out of it's space as there are wheels at the back, lift the lid (by hand if you wish - it stays open) and there's plenty of room, unlike round bins which I find awkward, then nudge the lid shut and it soft closes. Nice big solid pedal which is easy to use and controllable if you don't want the lid to lift all the way. The lift / soft close mechanism also seems to be vastly superior to other bins and doesn't feel as though it will break easily,if at all. Bin liners - buy the SimpleHuman ones. They are not really any more expensive, possibly cheaper, than buying decent quality liners from the supermarket and these are designed to fit, which they do, perfectly. The liner's are also unexpectedly strong, so no tearing so far and I've found that I no longer need to use black bin liners for the wheelie bin as the SimpleHuman ones are strong enough as they are and tie shut firmly. All in all probably more economical than the old bin with 'ordinary liners'. The lock is a great idea if you have pets that think they can get into the kitchen bin. It's a solid lock and there's no way my dogs can break in. I suppose the only slight criticism is that the lock can be awkward to use, but then if it was easy it would defeat the object! We tend to use the lock at night if the bin's getting full for peace of mind - avoiding the possibility of a mess in the morning! Lastly, a word about the hinges - as some have found, it's quite tough to get the plastic hinges to click into place. I just lined them up and went for it - press hard and it's done. Someone on here suggests using a drop of washing up liquid to help them click into place which is an excellent idea. Sounds like I work for SimpleHuman which I don't - just a satisfied customer!

If you've ever used a steel trashcan, which are usually heavy at the base, you'll be used to step-open trashcans staying completely in place when you step on them. This is plastic, so it's much lighter than steel. This means that when the trashcan is relatively empty, it'll move around quite a bit when you step on it. This can be annoying because you then have to position it back into place, and it just feels cheap when your trash can moves around when you step on it, no matter how high-quality the can.No worries, however. You can buy a gallon of distilled water for less than a dollar the next time you visit your local grocery store and place it in the bottom of the trash can to weigh it down. Then, no matter how aggressively you step, it'll stay completely in place, and your Trash Can Experience will have been elevated from Mildly Irritating to Extremely Pleasurable.Don't worry, there will still be plenty of room once you add your gallon of distilled water; I use standard kitchen trash bags and the bottom of one of these bags rests just above the gallon of distilled water. Obviously, you don't pour the water into the can; just place the unopened gallon on its side in the bottom of the can. This trash can is High Quality and Highly Affordable. The lack of weight in the base is it's Achilles Heel, but if you employ this Powerful Distilled Water Trick for less than a buck, this baby will sing every time you open its mouth. As a bonus, if there's ever a natural disaster or some other doomsday scenario, you've taken your first step to prepping your survival stash ;)Happy Canning!

I bought this to fit alongside my fridge as it looked more space efficient than a traditional round bin. It fit perfectly despite needing to be a little way away from the wall so that the lid hinges had room to operate. The bin comes fully assembled apart from the lid, which you need to attach. You thread a little metal rod into some central holes to enable the pedal part to work but the difficult part is knocking the hinges into place! You have to press some plastic bits onto each other & despite being fairly strong & extremely determined, I had to ask my husband to do it. He ended up straddling the bin in its normal upright position with the lid in the closed position. He whacked them into place with the heel of his hand. Now up & running, I'm really pleased with it. The pedal opens the lid smoothly, and it then closes slowly & smoothly too. If you want the lid to stay open for a while, you just push it back slightly beyond 90 degrees and it stays open. Also handy is the pet safe closure option which is quick and easy to use.The bin is very lightweight but has stayed in place on my laminate floor. It has wheels at the back which you can use to move the bin around if need be.Feels good quality & has a 5 year warranty. If you look at the Simplehuman website, where you need to register your product, the customer service reviews with regard to replacement parts are second to none. All very reassuring. Finally, the sticky labels on the bin peel off cleanly, without the irritation of bits of label backing being left behind - something that drives me mad!Recommended.

Overall, lovely looking bin, it fits perfectly in the space behind the door next to my fridge.its taller than i imagined, but a nice size that I won't have to take out the garbage twice a day.I wasn't sure about getting a plastic bin, but this tucks away nicely , even if it stuck out , it isn't a bad looking bin.No innerIt doesn't have an inner, which isn't an issue for me at the moment. ( when there's bin juice at the bottom I might feel differently)LidI was apprehensive about fitting on the lid after reading the reviews. (I don't know why it doesn't come with the lid already fitted)I have slight weakness in my hands and couldn't get the lid on, to be fair, I probably could have with a little more effort, however my husband was able to without much effort at all.Colour: it looks more grey then the picture, but I am really happy with it and it goes with my kitchenRubbish bagsI haven't tried the bags that were designed for this bin but already had rubbish bags with handles from Aldi, and they fit perfectly and doesn't fall into the bag when rubbish is thrown in.Its the 1st day of use so I can't comment further on trying to clean it etc, so far it's great. I've used it a few times today and haven't had issues with it being too light / the back lifting up when the pedal is pressed.

We wanted a bigger bin that was capable of storing our weekly recycling needs. We did have a smaller segmented bin that usually overflowed by collection day, and as the whole lot goes in one collection bin, separate compartments were not required. We already have a simplehuman butterfly bin for our general non recycling waste, and that have worked brilliantly for years, and still looks great. This black plastic bin has a tall and slim format that will hold a decent 40L. It fits pretty snuggly against the wall, and the footprint is no greater than the old bin.Assembly was fairly straight forward, but the lid did need a health whack from the heel of my hand to get it attached properly ...at least I will be safe in the knowledge that it won't come loose.I know that some people use these bins to store dry pet food ... and there is a decent lock on the lid that would stop any unwanted visits, again, it required a smart shove to lock. This model is also equipped with wheels, and that could be useful if you store heavy pet food in it.All in all, a decent looking, well constructed and big enough bin that should last years.

Delivery was quick, it was well packaged and it arrived in time for Christmas. The quality is good and it looks smart. The inside well is oddly shaped But, despite that, I would be delighted with it......IF I COULD JUST GET THE LID FIXED ON ! Why, oh why can't they send this item with the lid already fixed? It must take brute strength to click it into place because I've tried everything else. So now I have a great kitchen bin I cannot use, hence the 3 stars.Help would be appreciated!!!!Update:After a few days, and many attempts, I finally managed to fit the lid. I have to agree with the lady who suggested laying the bin on its back and positioning the lid, then using some force to snap the thing into place !It worked for me...at last...and I have upgraded to 4 Stars now it is working to perfection...and I am more than happy with it. The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is the lid problem....and I think it's a shame, because once assembled I wanted to give it 5 stars as I am delighted with it.I would recommend this bin to anyone who likes style and practicality....and who has the patience to fit the lid!

Great bin. Since arriving it's holding all my recycling (2 weeks) comfortably & this suits our fortnightly collection. Our replying doesn't include glass or food packaging which is done separately - but I bought this bin with my family recycling needs in mind. The lid lock is definitely good to 'toddler proof' the bin. The pedal attracts my son to play with the bin, but as its all non perishable 'clean' paper/card recycling it's fine for him to play as the lid doesn't slam. Another great feature, the slow shut lid.Wheels make it easy to move around and its lightweight. My 4* rating is because the bin tapers down in size so if it's placed next to something you have to leave a gap otherwise the lid gets obstructed.I hope that makes sense? Also, as other says, if this was used for household food rubbish and the bag split, it's would be awkward to clean due to the wheel casing at the base. Finally - the 45L White Sainsbury recyle bin liners were still a squeeze over the top so that wouldn't be ideal for rubbish but black bags have a larger opening so that could still work.Overall a great bin.

This is a very smart plastic bin - with a very annoying lid attachment. I could see how it attached but it took a little grease and a whole load of effort to fit. Once fitted, however, the slow, silent close is great and I've never had a bin that big that had a foot pedal before. In my excitement to buy the bin at a very reasonable price I only checked the height of the actual bin, not the height of the bin plus the open lid. As I have little room to spare the bin has to go under a worktop so I was cross with myself for looking at the hype about how well it slotted into small spaces without taking into account how high the lid would go.I can just about use the bin without removing it from its allotted space but it is very easy to wheel out should I need to fully open the lid. In conclusion, I am pleased with my purchase.A few days after buying the first bin, I decided I liked it so much that I'd buy a second one for holding items to be recycled. This time, with my earlier difficult lid experience, I was able to attach it in seconds. I've changed the rating to 5 stars as a consequence.

I had a push lid kitchen bin for years and I was tired of always having to push the lid open and close. I thought I would invest in a more expensive but nice looking pedal bin instead. I did think £40 for a bin was a bit much but I am not disappointed in this one!First, lots of people complained about the lid not fitting or difficult to fit. Well, maybe they finally heard the complaints because when mine arrived, the lid was already on! WoohooSo all I had to do was literally unwrap it, put it where I want it in the kitchen and voilà! Job done!Secondly, I love the slow closing lid! Obviously with my old bin, pushing the lid was quite noisy, but with this one, I can't hear anything at all!Thirdly, even though the capacity (40L) is smaller than my old bin (45L), it feels like I can actually put more rubbish in it because of the rectangular shape (my old one was semi-circle) !! My 50L draw-string bin bag fits perfectly around it and it feels like there's no wasted space.Overall, a very nice bin, I recommend it!

I bought this because I have a rescue cat with immense food issues (she was mostly starved when I found her on the building site), and she'll get into anything and strew it all over the place. She can't get into this, and that alone earns 4 stars. The reason it isn't 5 is because, much to my surprise, there was no internal container. Not terribly practical for several reasons - makes the bin so light that my ratbag skinny cat can manage to knock it over and drag it halfway across the kitchen on it's side; means that if your bin bag leaks, you have to get the whole thing - wheels and all - into the sink to clean; if you bought it for pet reasons - as I did - you cannot leave a millimetre of bin bag on the outside,or your pet will go after it, pull it and shred it. What's in the bag won't end up on your floor, but you will be spending a lot of time hoovering up bits of shredded plastic bin liner. This really needs an internal bin - then I'd give it 5*.

The lid mechanism broke on my old garbage can which led me to buying a new one. I am very satisfied with my purchase as the lid mechanism on this can is very sturdy, and the soft close feature is a bonus. The 40L capacity is also very welcoming as it has doubled my previous garbage can and is roughly about the same size which is amazing. Although the can is very narrow, it actually is a benefit for me because it helps to compact the trash and makes it easier to dispose of in the garbage chute. The locking mechanism works perfectly, even with a garbage bag hanging over the front lip.The only thing I did not like about this particular garbage can is the fact that since it is so narrow,it can be easily tipped over, or it does not want to stay in one place when pressing the pedal. To overcome this flaw I put a 5lbs weight in the bottom of the bin to help hold it in place. After making this adjustment it seems to be working perfectly.

We've always had the 40L size bin in this brand and style has been excellent and the slimline design makes it easy to fit in a smallest of spaces in kitchen. We have downsized cos it seems to have smaller bags allows us to get that much more (and more easily) into the big wheelie bin outdoors, as small bags get into the crevices of the wheelie unlike the big bag that just lays plonked in an awkward position with spaces all round them. A must now as we have gone to annoying fortnightly bin collections. We would defo recommend this product and the brand, it also looks more stylish than standard kitchen bins. We bought Sosoon Bin Liners, 23-30 L - 90 Bags Wastebasket Rubbish Bags for £9.99 on Amazon. The bags fits very well and the quality is similar the quality we had previously purchased in the supermarket for our larger bin. It makes sense not to put super heavy items in, but all in all these bags seem to doing the job intended.

A bin is a bin. Or is it??My last bin was a cylindrical one with an inner bin which had a handle for easy removal. Easy? There was nothing easy about it! It would take two of us and the strength of Hercules to remove the full bin bag which would get wedged and attach itself like a limpet onto the inner bin. And while you were sweating buckets (no pun intended) trying to pull out the bin bag, it would constantly catch on the stupid handle, which would eventually cause the bag to rip mid extraction.THIS bin however is a dream. The bin bag goes in. You fill the bin bag. You pull it out when full and discard. Repeat process. No hassle. No mess. No superhuman strength and bulging biceps required. And no ripped bin bags with contents sprayed all over the kitchen floor. Also it’s super easy to keep clean.Yes the lid is a pain to fit but you can put the bulging biceps to good use for this. Buy this bin. You won’t be disappointed!
