I am pleasantly surprised by just how much I like this dustbin. To be very open with you, I would not have thought that I would consider spending three figures on waste management in our home, but I am now convinced it is worth the investment.I very much like the overall look of the bin. We have an open plan living space so the bin is visible from the lounge and dining areas and this looks sleek and to my eye, quite futuristic. The anti finger print coating is part of these good looks as the bin looks clean and shiny. It really does work... just remember to clean with a soft cloth and no abrasives.I also like the size and height of the bin. It's a lot easier not having to bend down to put things in the bin...especially when scraping plates - much less mess. The foot pedal is large and works brilliantly and the lid has a soft close function (which I just love!). It also locks wide open with a single click when you are replacing the bag. Very well thought out design.Changing the bags is very easy. I am using the supplied bags. They're currently 40p each on this site. That's slightly more than I usually pay, but these are stronger bags that stand up to the compaction action, so I am sticking with them. I find I need to empty the bin every 3 days rather than every day, so I think I will actually save! You could use different bags... it would work fine if they are strong enough. The design of the part that both secures the bin bag and compacts the trash is simple and elegant. The bag folds over the front and back edges, tucking into four little slots that secure it in place. No excess bag sticking out of the lid... hurrah. Compacting the trash is super easy. Lift the handle upward and allow it to slide down the integral channels. It's a very effective mechanism. The trash is compacted down, leaving more space for more trash. The bags don't tear. It's so simple yet clever. Very pleasing.I was concerned that not emptying the bin daily would mean that I could smell the bin (I am using it for landfill). This hasn't been a problem so far. There is a carbon filter built into the lid and it seems to be an effective odour eater! These need replacing every 3 months. In summary, it's a bit of an investment, but this dustbin is just the best quality dustbin I have ever used in my life and because it gets used all the time, I now realise that this makes a qualitative difference to my daily life. I very much recommend this product. I feel daft rhapsodising about a bin, but I am actually chuffed to bits with it! Treat yourself. I really don't think you'll regret it.

Our local council has recently shifted the goalposts for how many black bags the rubbish collection will take, and how frequently. I have no problem with that, it’ll encourage people to waste less, but in a family with kids, keeping the waste down to the number of black bin bags allowed is going to be quite challenging. But this bin is definitely going to be a big help. It’s elegant and deceptively simple. The rectangular base (which just happens to be a perfect fit in the corner of our kitchen, and a much more efficient use of space than cylindrical bins) is smart, smooth and stylish. The foot pedal requires a medium amount of force and the lid flips open nice and promptly. Once you let go of the foot pedal, the lid closes smoothly, though there is a slight clang as it closes, which people seeking the most dampened noise-free kitchen possible might be a little disappointed by.The compression system is also very simple, but it works. The way in which the handle lifts up to become a press is the only really smart bit- after that it’s just a simple squishing system that isn’t as complicated or technologically advanced in real life as the product promo video might have you believe. But the most important thing is, it really works. So long as you’ve got an adequately strong bin bag, you can press down firmly and with confidence. Stating the very obvious but the amount of space you’ll save will depend on what it is you’re trying to squish. Things like dirty paper towels, or unrecyclable plastic cartons with food on squish down a lot- other items such as nappies, not so much. So the amount of benefit everyone gets will vary.On the big bag front, the product description says you don’t need special bin bags. I agree with this up to a point- you definitely don’t need to get the thickest, most reinforced industrial bin bags you can find, regular bin bags will do, *but* I would advise going for the cheapest budget supermarket value bin bags you can find as there will be a greater rip danger with these. Somewhere in the middle should do very nicely with this bin.OK so the current asking price of two hundred quid is rather high for a silver bin with a squashy flap, but that aside, this is a sleek, smart and stylish bin that will be an immensely satisfying addition to your kitchen (or wherever).

I got lucky and was offered this for free - honest review coming up.Would I pay £200 for a bin - maybe - have paid over £100 for a recycling system in the past so maybe I would and if you wander around John Lewis there are plenty of household bins within this price bracket. What makes this one compelling is nothing to do with the item - it's our local council. We get one black bin collection a fortnight - and over xmas etc it can be a little as 2 in 6 weeks (food waste over the winter is once a month and fortnightly over the summer - fly's and maggots love it)We are a family of 5 and although we recycle everything we still generate a very full black bin over 14 days - often I take a bag or 2 to the local dump (20 miles round trip so hardly good for the environment). If we want a 2nd black bin its £100 charge for the bin plus £70 a year extra and the 2nd black bin is half the size of the first one - so suddenly the idea of getting 3 times the waste in a bag becomes very attractive. and therefore within 12 months it would pay for itself. So to the bin - looks lovely and very well made, can't ever fault Joseph Joseph - total quality. The compactor system is a little bit less exciting in real life than the video would suggest but it works - how well depends on the rubbish - and since we don'd use it for food waste the compact-ability of hard plastic etc is less than the 3 to 1 ratio suggested but it still works!we started using it Sunday morning and the bag was sent to the bin the this morning - so 3 days - normally our old bin would have been emptied twice and be half full again I reckon - so we should half the number of waste bags over a week.I did buy 2 boxes of Joseph Joseph compactor bags as the ultra thin ones we tend to use may not last the compacting - and these a re thick and strong and because we are likely to use half as any the cost isn't much more overall. So yes - I really do think this is good value and looks great - the odour filter in the top will hopefully work - but not a problem for us as its packaging that goes in our bin not food.I've knocked off a star only because the description is misleading - you cant get 90 ltrs of rubbish in a 30 ltr bin! What you can do is ensure that the 30 ltrs is fully utilised.

UPDATE: The more we use this the more we like it. It actually feels like it does compact it more than I initially thought. I’d been a bit precious with it and only put in packaging rather than dirty bits! Once it started to be used as the actual bin, the compacting is better. One thing we have noticed is that ot does begin to smell a lot - the odour control has little impact on it! Our old brabantia bin is much better on containing the smell.I’ve been using this a while now and have really been considering the pros and cons.Although this bin looks really nice in my kitchen (and matches my kitchen cupboards even), it doesn’t really do what it’s designed to do.The compacting function isn’t really very strong and detracts from what is essentially a really nice looking bin.Compared to the Brabantia bin, which I’ve had for years, it has its advantages. For example, you don’t need to press the lid to lift it which I do like. It also has a soft close lid which is nice. It does look a lot nicer than the other bin. I also think the square shape is much better than a round shape as it fits much neater into the space. It also has an ‘odour patch’ inside the lid, which is meant to control the smell of a bin. Again a nice idea and I haven’t really noticed that there is a smell but I’m not sure how much that’s to do with this odour patch! The main downfall is the compacting element, which really doesn’t do it for me - when you try and compact rubbish down it does work with moderate force but I wouldn’t want to put too much weight behind it as I think it would break. The problem is you need quite a bit of weight to compact some rubbish. I also don’t understand how it can compact lighter rubbish when the vacuum it creates just pulls the rubbish back up again.I just think it’s too expensive if you’re buying it for it’s compacting function. However, the bin is really nice without the compacting gimmick so I think is probably fairly priced if it was a significant amount less than it’s £180 RRP and bought as simply a nice bin. It’s comparable to the price of other decent bins if it was around £100 - £120.

It does its job and looks good doing it with a sleek stainless steel and black plastic finish. Admittedly the compaction feature is a bit of a gimmick since most waste expands back up to its original size if you just compact it briefly, though I have found that if I compact overnight it does seem to do a better job. The compaction is all manual and uses the handle at the front of the bin to push down on the waste.Fortunately, I have not yet experienced the compaction mechanism failing like some other reviewers, and it is good to know that there is a 10 year warranty on my bin should the worst happen. On an side note,be prepared to watch guests yank at the prominent compaction handle when they try and use the bin for the first time instead of using the foot pedal. The bin has a small plastic handle around the back that helps you move the bin around if you need to, and the soft closing lid snaps into the open position for when you need to change bin bags/give the inside a clean. Cleaning the bin is very straight forward and the lid also has a little compartment to put some odor neutralizers into if you so desire. I have found that most slim pedal bin liners work well with the bin and have not had to use the Joseph Joseph originals. Regardless of what binbag you use, some care needs to be taken when removing the bags as the compaction mechanism tends to catch on bulkier bits and can cause minor tears. My biggest gripe with the bin is the fact that the stainless steel is quite thin and has been bent over a solid plastic frame. If you put a dent in the stainless steel which can happen easily if you drop something onto the lid or even the foot pedal, there is no way to repair it from the other side thanks to the plastic. It is a shame that such an expensive product has such poor reparability/durability. For this reason I can only give this product four stars.

I'm normally a massive fan of Joseph Joseph stuff and have showered their products with five star reviews but this hasn't really done enough to deserve four stars yet. However, the more I use it the more I like it, so for old times sake I've given it four stars. This 'trash compactor' or pedal bin as I like to know it comes with a pack of three custom designed bags and a lid odour filter element supplied with the bin. The only real assembly required is to fit a bin liner and the odour absorbing pad, which I managed OK without having to refer to the manual. Once done the bin is ready to go. You can buy twenty replacement liners for a not outrageous eight quid and the odour absorbers are a fiver for two.In use the bin was quiet and easy to use with a smooth opening and soft close action. The liners take 30 Litres of waste as they are but Joseph Joseph claim that the compaction mechanism allows you to crush down 90 Litres into that 30 Litre space. This is stretching credibility a bit especially if the waste is those black plastic trays you can't recycle or other non-recyclable material which has a habit of springing back. I've seen the other reviews which report the compaction mechanism failing at the joints but so far I've not had the same but then I'm not forcing it when I go through the compaction procedure. Mostly because I know that much of it will just spring back to full size. Since I put all food waste including cooked into my green bin (Warwickshire has digestors that take cooked food), the odour eater in the lid seems rather redundant for my use.So overall a reasonable sized, high quality and attractive pedal bin with an only partially effective compaction mechanism which doesn't really justify the price if I'm honest but it is growing on me, slowly.

This is a handsome bin, albeit one that has a capacity compromised by thicker than normal walls, which hold the compression mechanism. How well the compression unit works depends to a large extent on what your rubbish consists of and, to be honest, you can compress fairly efficiently by hand much of the time if, like me, you mainly throw plastic film, food wrapping and food pouches into general waste. If you want to compress more rigid plastics, more effort will be needed and you won’t achieve such satisfying results.I was concerned about how easy the compression mechanism would be both to use and to clean/keep clean. Your refuse bag wraps over the pads and so, when you activate the compression (by hand),the bag shields the pads from most seepage and they stay clean. As I said, compression is by hand and there is a slot that the mechanism moves within through the bin; you don’t have to be a Titan yourself to activate and realise a good amount of compression.A bag is provided but I am using my own liner, which is probably thicker than average and works well in this bin. It also means that I don’t have to worry about breaching the Local Authority restrictions on bag size for waste.I like the look of the bin and, as long as you are realistic about what you will achieve from compaction, it shouldn’t disappoint. It has already created a more harmonious atmosphere here as it has proven so easy to push general waste to the bottom of the bag that everyone is now doing this rather than allowing rubbish to sit close to the top of the bin.

This thing is solid, built like a tank. The only way I can get it to rock even slightly in normal use is to set it on uneven ground. Sat snug in the place where the display end used to be a waste of space in my 90's kitchen, it certainly brings the place closer to this side of the millennium. The surface hasn't taken a dent even from me bashing into it in the power wheelchair. The pedal requires a firm enough touch so that you don't feel like you're going to tip over, and the lid opens smoothly without flying up and banging. The mechanism inside is still taking time for other folk in the house to work out how the bags go to cover over the mechanism. The squashy compactor thing I thought was a gimmick, but it is surprisingly good. I've had the bin in use for a week and I reckon it's halved my rubbish volume. I live in a council area where we have a plant that separates our waste to recycle, so all my waste goes in a single bin. Today is bin day and the bin was forgotten; normally that would be a disaster, but the dustbin is only half full. Usually it would be overflowing and I'd have to beg for bin space from the neighbours. It loses a star on two counts. First the cover for the carbon filter has vanished. I'm assuming it fell into the bin somewhere at the start of the first bag. I can't see anywhere online to buy that part as a spare either. Secondly, despite how good it it, I feel it is too expensive. Buy this, yes, you won't regret it, but buy it at a discount.

It seems so silly to be het up about what kind of bin you have in your kitchen, but it's amazing how much you use it, and what a focus it's becomes of what you do in the kitchen. We have quite a few Joseph Joseph products and this is first class in terms of design and quality of manufacture. It came in a huge box and and it coolly promises to compact 90 L litres of rubbish in the same space as 30-there is something of a gimmick about your first encounter with this bin because it is quite simply supplied with an internal handle allows you to compact the rubbish down without touching anything you put in it… When you say trash compactor I have a mental image of the tentacle in the first Star Warsfilm-but this has really made itself a space in our kitchen-the square design seems to be more logical it does have an impressive capacity and while the compacting mechanism is a little plastic, it does do the job. Beware compacting so much you can't get it out come bin day! You will be committed to buying the right kind of binliners you can do the painlessly is on on an Amazon subscription. This is a full-time bin and and being as I'm the only one who understands the mechanism (or so I'm told) it seems to have become my solo task to take rubbish out - how did that happen? First-class item that does a job well and is more important than you think.

I love Joseph Joseph products and think their bins are the best you can get - I have 3 JJ bins that I use all over the house and they are great.I was a bit sceptical about this bin from the reviews I have read about the compacter being flimsy and breaking easily, but after a week of use I am really impressed. It looks nice and I like the pedal operation - stops dirty / greasy fingers leaving marks all over the lid. I was initially worried about the size of it as my other JJ bin was larger, but the compacter element means that this has a much greater capacity and after a week of use, I am still on my first bin bag, which I normally get through 2 or 3 a week. The compacter handle does feel a bit flimsy compared to the rest of the bin,but I have used it with caution and ensured that I have it completely straight, and push down gently on each operation. I compact regularly, which I think helps and because all hard / recyclable plastic goes in the recycle bin, there is nothing hard that can cause too much resistance.I think it is a really good bin and a very clever design. I do think there is room for improvement - maybe a metal compactor handle would give a feeling of more robustness, but I am hopeful that as long as I use with care, it will last.

This is the best dustbin that I have ever owned. It looks stunning I am proud of it not needing to hide it away.It is strong a sturdy so well made and I find now I only need to empty it once a week. When you start to see it getting full you just open the lid and push down on the handle. This closes the two sides together and compresses the waste together and down. When you finally need to empty the bin you will find that there is still plenty of room in the bag but the waste is neatly compacted. You could then empty the bag and use it again if you want to be really green, its up to you.The bin comes with a smell filter which you fit into the inside of the lid, I haven't needed to change it yet,its been two months. One warning I must mention is that a friend stopped by for a cup of tea with her dog, I didn't see that she had put her dog poo bag which was full into my bin. I didn't smell anything until the next day when I pushed down to compress the waste when poo! the smell was so bad, the poo bag had burst with the pressure! So please don't use it for dog waste.I did buy some of the Joseph black trash bags which are very expensive, but I found out that you can use much cheaper brands without them splitting.I do hope you find this review helpful.

The Joseph Joseph Titan bin is a modern and elegant design that looks smart in a modern kitchen. The compactor is a nice idea and does help compact the waste and reduce the number of times it needs to be emptied. This is somewhat of a luxury feature, pushing the waste down could be done by hand but this does offer a hygienic and convenient way of compacting things down.Waste bags can be purchased specifically for this bin, but a variety of similar bags could be used. The bags are gripped in place around the compactor. The thing that I'm not impressed with is the push mechanism to lift the lid. Pressing on the foot plate flings the lid open with such speed that the whole bin rocks as it reaches the end of the open range. In comparison to my previous SimpleHuman bin this is very noticeable, my previous bin softly opened with no rocking or movement of the rest of the bin. It's an expensive bin but it is very well made, smart and functional with the compactor. It loses a star for the lid opening rocking the whole bin.

I've been using my Titan for 6 months now and it has really helped reduce the amount of times I have to empty the bin, which is always an inconvenience when you live in a flat and have to take the bin down to a communal bin store. Inserting the bin liner is different to a standard bin, however I soon got used to this and now it has become second nature. I have used a combination of the Joseph Joseph bin liners, and supermarket bin liners, I prefer the Joseph Joseph liners as they fit perfectly, however when I run out of these the supermarket liners also work well too. The odour filter has been effective in preventing smells escaping into the kitchen, and I have only needed to replace this once in the last 6 months.Overall, the quality is great, especially the finger-print resistant stainless steel body which wipes clean without leaving smears. I've recommended the Titan to my friends and family, and some of them now have one too!

I must admit it’s a very expensive bin but that shouldn’t put you off. It’s great at crushing up the rubbish so you can fit a lot more in there without having to take the bin out. Usually I’ll use two bin bags a week, this put it down to one bin bag. It also looks great in the home and is very sturdy, it wouldn’t be easily knocked over if you have little ones running around! One downside is that you would be best buying the Joseph Joseph bin bags though which aren’t cheap as I found other bin bags got ripped easily. I did unfortunately have to return my bin as my filter part was missing so can’t comment on how good it is at keeping smells in.Overall though it’s definitely a very good bin but with a high price tag so if you’re happy to spend the money I’d recommend this bin.

This bin is nicely shaped and not too bulky, and appears well made and sturdy. The instructions for fitting the bin bags confused me a little but I got the hang of it (you need to make sure the red bit is covered in bin bag. if its not you have got it wrong). This fitting system is so much better than most bins. The bag is held tight and neat and you don't get things spilling into the body of the bin. When you need to empty it you pull the handle and it comes away easily. You might struggle a bit to untangle the bag from the handle but again, once you get the knack it is fine.I clearly have far too much plastic in my domestic rubbish as every time I compact it with the big handle,it all springs straight back up again. It would probably work brilliantly on food waste only.
