If your lucky once in a generation a game comes along that blows you away in every aspect possible. This, for me, is that game. I think that this game is actually perfect in every way that I would measure a game. Graphics, sounds, gameplay, style, story, value. I would put all of these as 10/10 and then some.Graphics and Style - They are hand drawn and somewhat simple but with an art style that is consistent throughout the world. Each area is different but you truly get the feeling that they all belong to the same connected world. When travelling from one region to another you will sometimes notice subtle notes of the style of the area you are traversing into. The colours in the game in some areas pop out at you to represent the lush growth or are dark and sinister, with weird creatures moving about just out of the main play area, or majestic city areas with huge backdrops. There really are some breathtaking areas in the game.Sounds - Again, they are perfect for me. Every area, again, is different but with the same feel running through to boost that immersion into a living breathing world. The music itself is fantastic albeit melancholic but I could still just listen to the music for hours and be happy. The game sounds consist of various subtle noises that reflect the area that you are in, and one of the first things you need to do when you reach a new area is to listen out for one of the NPC characters humming away to himself for when you find this character you can purchase his map of the area. Most of the NPCs that talk to you sound unique with their gibberish voices which again adds another layer to the already rich and varied world.Gameplay - The game is a metroidvania, meaning it takes heavy inspiration from both Metroid and Castlevania games. You will find yourself exploring a huge 2D game world set in a bug society. To begin with you will have next to no equipment and low health but as you explore you unlock more items that will help you explore further and further into the map. The first section of the game is fairly linear upto a point and then the game really opens up allowing you to travel freely to various different regions. You will find a vast variety of different enemies in your travels and will have to learn their attack patterns to effectively take them down, luckily the controls are tight and responsive so when you do get hit it usually is the players fault and not due to unfairness, saying that the game is still hard as nails! The boss battles, of which there are loads, pit you against harder than normal enemies that can zip along the stage with a huge variety of signature moves to remember. Upon defeating the bosses you will be rewarded with access to another area or an essential new ability for the most part. There are, however, a large amount of bosses that are optional and don't need to be defeated to get any of the endings. With one of the latest updates to the game you get the ability to fight any boss that you have already encountered and also more difficult versions of them, this is not for the faint hearted as they do get very difficult very quickly.Story - The protagonist is silent but most of the NPC's you'll meet in the game will talk to you and its through these and other devices that you can slowly out together the lore of the world and the overall story of what is going on. For me the story was so captivating and had a definite sadness to it. The story is of a single small bug that is going into the vast world of Hallownest on a kinda journey of self discovery. It's the kind of game where the story develops around you and as such I'm not going into detail here with it.Value - Here's the crazy part. The digital version of the game is less than £20. I think when I bought it on the eshop it was £14.99 on day of release and for that price you get all the main game and all the DLC's that have become available. I don't know the names of them all but each one added significant amounts of gameplay. I think there were 4 with the final one adding the afore mentioned boss battle mode. When I'm judging a game on value I'm usually happy if I get a pound per hour played, so far I am over 80 hours of playing the game. I've no where near finished all the challenges that are available and haven't even attempted the harder difficulty mode which effectively gives you just 1 life to finish the game. I felt that so much love had gone into this game that I would have to buy the physical version as well. The collectors edition in itself is a work of beauty but even the standard release includes a manual and map (I believe) and as such adds to the value of the physical release. All in all this is simply put my favourite game of this generation. There are only 2 other games that I rate as highly as this and there is some nostalgia with both of them (although Eternal Darkness and Secret of Mana are still both amazing games!!!) There is a sequel due to be released this year that was originally intended to be DLC for this game but got too big so it will be a stand alone game. I'm hoping that this is somewhere near as good as the original. I have included photos of my Collectors Edition and a 3D printed and painted version of the silent Protagonist.

I'd seen many people on gaming websites giving praise to Hollow Knight, so when it finally came to the Playstation 4 I had to try it. Starting as a Kickstarter project (people fund to pay for the game getting made based on the idea pitch) Hollow Knight became a smash hit now on multiple platforms which in itself is a feat considering Team Cherry the developer is made up of only two people. The main question though is, does it deserve it? is it good?No it's not good, it's great! Hollow Knight is a metroidvania in style. For those unaware that's a term mixing Metroid and Castlevania, classic 2D side scrolling games designed around exploration and finding new items and abilities to unlock new paths to continue to progress. The exploration in Hollow Knight is superb. Each area is distinct in design with it's own enemies and challenges yet all work well with each other to form a cohesive world. You will travel through crumbling ruins, old tram stations, overgrown gardens, crystal mines among many other locales each of which has their own place in the world with cryptic clues given from occasional lore, an assortment of odd characters hidden around and visual clues from the level designs themselves. The story in Hollow Knight is not laid out bare before you but instead drip fed to you as you explore piecing together aspects to understand whats going on. To be honest I never fully understood the game from a narrative point of view but I really enjoyed the elements, atmosphere and gameplay behind it all.As you explore there will be a huge amount of enemies in every area constantly in the way. All of them are pretty distinct from flying lancers, to small knights, giant worms, and everything in between. Combat is pretty challenging throughout, especially the bosses, some of which take multiple attempts and tweaking with your equipment to eventually beat. A few I had to leave and come back once i'd explored more to fight again once stronger. Most of them are because of this, really memorable though learning their moves and patterns. I really respected that the game wasn't just a push over to progress through. Though there are ways to increase your characters health, increase the power of their nail (sword) the biggest factor is the games badge system. Your character can equip a certain amount of these based on their power level which will increase as the game goes on. Each badge is unique and gives a particular bonus to your character, for example one might increase your swords range, another boosting your attack at full health, one gives you a mini shield, others boost your healing charge etc. The combination of these badges can make different builds fitting your play style and in a couple of cases some bosses had me changing up my badge equipment to deal with them and it made all the difference. To see your character on the map you even need to equip a badge so learning each area and balancing what you can equip becomes really important. Each of the enemies and bosses also looks amazing due to the games both distinct and utterly brilliant art design. The whole game is based on a world of insects with Mantis, flys, Dung Beatles etc all changed into knights and fallen warriors to fight. The lines are thick and clear cut with a lot of solid colours yet the backgrounds have amazing hues of purples, greens and yellows. It looks simple yet is amazingly detailed, I absolutely love how it looks and the animations are absolutely top notch to boot. Along with looking great the sound effects and music are equally of high quality (Nightmare King Grim's boss theme is especially ace). For a two person team they put most larger developers to shame with the overall production quality on display here.Exploring everything and fighting through the bosses takes quite a bit of time though technically it isn't a huge game. You could probably beat it if you were pretty good in around 15 hours but Hollow Knight is full of hidden content from whole hidden areas, bosses, badges and easter eggs so you would be missing out if you didn't explore. The PS4 version also comes with all the DLC like The Grimm Troupe and Godmaster which piles on a lot of extra content. All in all exploring everything for every item and getting the platinum trophy took me 50 hours. My one complaint if I had to choose one is that the Godmaster DLC is a little too hard to actually finish. The final challenge is a boss rush that involves fighting over 40 bosses in a row, every boss in the game including the super hard ones. If you die, there is no check point and you have to start again. That needed toning back especially as it had a full game ending attached to it.That aside the game is amazing. It's imaginative, fun to explore, looks gorgeous with a lot of content and I can't wait for the already announced sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong.+ Exploration is really fun.+ Combat is tough but satisfying.+ Badge system is a great way to vary the characters builds.+ Amazing art design.+ A lot to find, fight and explore content wise with all DLC included free.- It may be too challenging in places for some people, one part of the optional DLC is particularly unforgiving to finish.

Without doubt, one of my favourite games of all time. A vast, atmospheric, detailed world to explore. Lots of secrets, different abilities and upgrades to discover. Plenty of challenging platforming and a huge variety of enemies and bosses, requiring skill and often persistence to defeat. The story is deep and cryptic and the characters you meet are unique and interesting. I love the art style, the haunting music and the sense of progression, as you come to learn the worldmap and master the enemies and controls. Not to mention all the DLC is included, adding countless more hours of gameplay to an already large game. Team Cherry have lovingly crafted an intricate, expansive world with it's own distinctive and intriguing aesthetic and lore. A true masterpiece and a must play! I can't wait for the sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong.

This is a lovely videogame if you're passionate about platform games. Agility in your fingers and some great timing is something you'll develop. I love the music and the little cute characters you find on the way. It seems a bit gothic but in a cute way.I dont have time so I prefer having some time on this game as a stress relief rather than play long RPGs or shooting games. This is great if you dont have much time during the week.Controls are very simple but as I said, you need quick reflexes and control. Quite fun to play!

Hollow Knight was a sale buy I got on computer a year back. I am not a metroidvania kind of guy and I’m still not. Regardless, this expansive world of mystery and expertly crafted beauty stands as one of my favourite games of all time. I have bought this version of the game for a friend who does not own a computer and he loves it. My only complaints are that I cannot play it fresh a second time and the sequel does not yet have a release date.

I loved this game. It was my GOTY on Switch, and that was in a year when I played both BOTW and Mario Odyssey. I was so engrossed I couldn't stop playing it. It has a lovely art style and a perfect melancholy atmosphere matched by a beautiful soundtrack. Really wonderful stuff.

Brilliant! It's as simple that. One of the best games I have played in a long time! So far I have put over 40 hours into the game and I still haven't finished the game. Do yourself a favour and if you like metroidvania games, then get this as soon as possible!

Lovely little gem of a game, immaculately made, looks, sounds and feels amazing to play. Difficulty can be punishing at times but gameplay means it’s incredibly rewarding. Physical copy includes lovely artwork and highly valuable map to help guide you along!

Best Metroidvania full stop, beats the previous reigning champion Symphony of the Night by a long shot. There are so many games on Switch, it can be difficult to gauge which is good. But Hollow Knight is a game you need in your library.

Incredible game. Have 200 hours played already and still have not 100% the game. Easily one of the best games I have played alongside Unchartered Drakes Fortune and Super Mario Galaxy

Bought this for my son for his Birthday and he is still playing it. Compared to other games that get completed very quickly, Hollow Knight goes on forever so is well worth the money!

Wow, just wow. If you're up for a challenge and enjoy rogue like Castlvevania/Metroid (Metroidvania) style, this is a MUST play.

2D Dark Souls, but you're a bug. Fantastic, tight controls and amazing level design. Couldn't recommend a better rogue-like.
