IntroductionHaunting Ground (or Demento in Europe and Japan) is one my favorite survival horror games. Now let me tell you why. First of all, it's a very unique game. But, like most unique games, it isn't for everyone. Haunting Ground is a survival horror which was developed and publish by Capcom in 2005, for Sony's PlayStation 2. It's about an 18-year old girl named Fiona who wakes up in a strange castle and pairs up with a white German Shepherd to escape the castle.Story18-year old Fiona Belli awakes in a small dog cage after surviving a car accident. Dressed in only a blanket she sneaks out and makes her way towards a huge castle. Once inside, she's greeted by a creepy maid named Danielle who gives her Victorian-styled clothes to wear.Things just get weirder from then on. After being chased by the childish, albeit humongous groundskeeper who just wants to squeeze her a little (more like crush her to death), Fiona finds a white German Shepherd painfully tied to a tree. She sets him free and remembers his name from a collar she found earlier: Hewie. Fiona and Hewie team up to escape the castle and it's strange inhabitants. It seems that everyone except Debilitas once something...from inside of her. And they will stop at nothing to get it. It's up to the player to help Fiona and Hewie through the castle, escape the pursuers and survive. Along the way they meet a dangerous and mentally disabled groundskeeper, a creepy and unstable maid, a creepy hooded stalker and a mysterious old man who appears to be helping them, or is he? I give Haunting Ground's story a 9/10. It's very original and the story is very well developed throughout the game with plenty of cinematics and even a small plot twist that will make you want to escape the castle even more.MusicThe music in Haunting Ground/Demento was composed by Seiko Kobuchi from the Resident Evil series and she did an incredible job with it. Each pursuer possesses their own chase music and each stage of the game has different background music for when you're not being chased. Not only that, but everyone gets their own boss music. The background music is pretty creepy and will really keep you on edge, and the chase music really gives you a sense of danger. There's also a really heartwarming theme for Hewie. I give Haunting Ground's music a 9/10 for how well it blends in with the atmosphere and for how really well done it is.GraphicsHaunting Ground's graphics are really good. The characters are really realistic and it's not even uncanny valley realistic like in Clock Tower 3. The characters are really well done and the backgrounds and areas are well textured and constructed. The design is fairly Gothic (then again, it is a castle) and pretty chilling at the same time. I give Haunting Ground's graphics a 10/10 because of how well done they are.GameplayHaunting Ground's gameplay is very original. To start off, it's very similar to Clock Tower 3's gameplay. In case you've never played or even heard of Clock Tower 3, I'll tell you how it works. You and Hewie walk around the level looking for items and such to complete puzzle and work your way to the next area. All you have to do is find an item or two, do a little backtracking, get some keys and carry on. Simple right? Not really. While you're exploring, certain cinematics, actions you perform or simply after a certain amount of time passes, your pursuer will begin chasing you. While being chased you cannot examine objects or use items. All you can do is choose to either run and hide or fight. Fiona isn't very athletic so she's fairly weak and all she can do is kick and do some form of tackle. However, Hewie is a dog. Dogs have teeth. Using the right analog stick you can command Hewie to sit, search, come to you and, of course, attack. Hewie's main attacks consists of biting the enemy. He can also learn new moves like dodging. You can also charge his attack for extra power. However, the pursuers will not only attack Fiona but also attack Hewie. As Hewie gets hurt he becomes slow and feeble. You can replenish his health using certain food items. If Hewie gets hit too many times, he'll collapse temporarily. Or, if you're on Hard Mode, he'll die and you'll get a Game Over. Hewie also has an invisible friendship meter. You can make him like you more by praising him when he's good and feeding him treats. However, if you hit him or scold him too much, he'll like you less. The more Hewie likes you, the more he'll listen to you. If he doesn't like you, he'll just run around and ignore you and even attack you if you get him really angry. Now for Fiona. Fiona, unlike most video game characters, get scared. Like in Clock Tower 3, you have a Panic Meter, and if you're Panic Meter reaches max, you'll go into Panic Mode. There isn't actually a gauge for the Panic Meter in Haunting Ground. The Panic Meter is the screen. As Fiona gets scared, the colors begin to fade from the screen, the screen begins to pulse and Fiona begins to stumble a bit while running. While in Panic Mode, Fiona will move uncontrollably and will trip all of the place. You'll know when you reach Panic Mode because the screen goes negative for about a second and Fiona lets out a shrill scream. The screen turns almost completely black and white and it becomes a lot harder to control Fiona. Also, the only command you can give Hewie while in Panic Mode is "help" and you better hope you've been nice to him or he's not going to help you. Now here's the catch: While in Panic Mode, you can fall over. This is your weakest position. Once fallen, you can't get up until Panic Mode is over. The screen becomes nearly completely black and white and pulses. All you can do is mash buttons and try to crawl away as your pursuer comes in for the kill. Eventually though, Fiona will get up and Panic Mode will end. So how do you die? First of all, Fiona does have health of some sort, but her health doesn't actually run out. If Fiona gets hurt or if she runs for long periods of time, her stamina runs out and she becomes much slower and weaker. You can replenish your stamina by using certain items or by drinking water at the sinks scattered throughout the game. Anything that kills Fiona will be a one hit kill. No second chances. Your pursuers can attack Fiona and take away her stamina and cause her to panic. They can also use their "finishing moves" of sort which can kill you. Basically either you get hurt and panicked, or you die. For example: Debilitas, the game's first pursuer can either punch Fiona, or he can grab her and put her in a death grip which will kill her if she doesn't get out soon enough. It seems easy enough as long as you stay away, but your pursuers are pretty fast and Panic Mode makes you extremely vulnerable. If fallen while in Panic Mode, your pursuer can easily come in for the kill. Now onto hiding. If you don't want to fight, there's plenty of places in the game to hide. However, don't hide in the same place too many items or your pursuers will find you easier. There's also several traps in the game that can kill you, so be careful of that too. I give Haunting Ground's gameplay a 10/10 for how original and fun it is.ReplayabilityHaunting Ground will only take you about 10 hours or less to beat the first time. But, it has A LOT of replayability. To start off, there's 4 different endings to get. Not only that, but there are 11 different play-types to get. What play-type you get depends on your statistics at the end of the game such as your play time, how many items you found, your dog level, your Panic Mode count etc. And, to top things off, both Fiona and Hewie have multiple costumes that can be unlocked which can boost their attack, stamina etc. Then there's also Hard Mode which can is unlocked after beating the game. In Hard Mode the pursuers are faster and stronger and Hewie can actually die, resulting in a Game Over. Also, there are more medallions and less items. Medallions can be used to create alchemical items and equipment to help help you through the game. I give Haunting Ground's replayability a 10/10 because it's one of the most replayable games I've ever played.OverallI suggest you try to rent Haunting Ground before you buy it. It's not for everyone, but if you like survival horror you should definitely check it out. It's not "Silent Hill scary", but it does keep you on edge. If ever given the chance to buy it, definitely do. It's a great game and is definitely underrated in my opinion. I give Haunting Ground a 10/10. It's a great survival horror game and whether you're a fan of the genre or not, you should really check it out.

This is a bit of a difficult review to write as I can't quite explain my feelings about this game, so let's start with the obvious: the product. As mentioned in previous reviews, the listing (at least for now) is for a SEALED copy of the UK version of the game. I did not expect this when I ordered it and was even more surprised due to how hard the game is to find everywhere else. Bravo to the sellers and I am thoroughly pleased with this.Haunting Ground has become somewhat of a cult classic, having been looked back on by gamers as being an experience worth a play through, despite it being received slightly negatively upon release. The presentation of the game is honestly so beautiful and has aged incredibly well, giving us a fantastic, detail-orientated environment to explore, which makes the game that bit more immersive. Now, there are a few things that should be considered when thinking of playing Haunting Ground, first of all, this game is not easy. There's very, very few items scattered around the castle and simply looking at something distressing can lead our main character Fiona into a major panic attack, a function of the game which renders the player useless and unable to do anything other than call your canine companion for help (if you are being chased, this is more or less an instant death). You simply can not fight your pursuers effectively without the help of Hewie, the dog that Fiona rescues when she wakes up in the castle. I can see that this has been a source of frustration for some players and honestly, the first time I died in this game will stay with me forever...when Fiona is killed, the game treats you to a disturbing Game Over screen that relies heavily on shocking the player with audio cues, something that worked to the point that I put the game down and vowed not the play it again, but I just couldn't help myself. There's something inherently addictive about Haunting Ground that I'm still not really able to put into words. It kind of feelings like you are playing an active role in a bad dream and the urge to get Fiona out will probably overcome your urge to put the game aside. After initially having my butt kicked by the game, I stubbornly decided to see what resources were available and I realised that there are a tonne of different items that can be crafted via "alchelmy" - PLEASE, if you play this game, PRACTISE THE ALCHEMY. It is infuriatingly difficult at first but if you are patient and collect enough medallions, you will be able to save and re-load until you can manage to make decent items. The first time I played this game I managed to make Fairy Earrings on the first run, an item which makes Fiona invisible when you stand still (this does not break the game and instead actually balances things out for you much more). I also managed to obtain all the other accessories, including earrings that raise your stamina level and reduce the level at which Fiona panics. You can also craft boots that explode on your enemies and knock them out (these are really helpful, as the pursuers drop items when you knock them out). Basically, if you are looking to play this game, one way to circumvent the frustration of being defenceless is to actually pay attention to what the game offers. Normally, I would find this style of gaming unfair and I did, at first, however this actually ADDS to the distress/panic that you feel as a player and completely heightens the experience. It is a much more authentic "survival horror" title than a number of other games out there because it really does refuse to hold the players hand, and I believe it was this that ultimately alienated a lot of people upon release (that and the fact Capcom released it alongside RE4).I mentioned Hewie, our canine companion who can be found on the cover of the game as he is a HUGE part of the game, he is not simply an accessory or a permanent attack button for Fiona but is actually a fully realised character in the story (Hewie can affect a number of your endings and is ultimately the thing that stands between Fiona and a safe ending!). He is also used to obtain key items that Fiona can't reach and he can incapacitate enemies, helping you escape. Quite simply, without Hewie, it would impossible to complete this game. However, you cannot simply "control" Hewie, you have to train him. His AI is very realistic and he will react to your actions as well as the environment you are trapped in (Hewie will bark before certain traps and growl when there are pursuers on the way, giving you time to escape/avoid the traps). Hewie can also locate "secret" items, just simply send him to search and he will examine areas and bark where there is something hidden. It's important that you praise Hewie whenever he does something praiseworthy or when he fails to find any secret items as he whimpers when he fails to find you anything and after a while this can lead to him becoming despondent. Furthermore, if you mistreat Hewie, he will outright attack Fiona and can send you into major panic (I have never done this, FYI, game or no game I could never bring myself to hurt him). The story itself I am saying nothing about, mostly because it's a completely bizarre story and to say anything would be to ruin the experience. However, do heed a warning that the game's story is very disturbing, in fact I am surprised many parts of this game made it past censorship. Everything about it is sexually suggestive and psychologically crippling. If you find yourself triggered by implied sexual violence then it may be worth thinking about before you pick it up (I am someone who cannot stomach anything like this in media however it didn't bother me too much, if that's worth anything). The game's story was also praised for its handling of this disturbing subject and the fact it managed to tackle it in a way that does not feel gratuitous or exploitive (the same can't be said for Fiona's alternative costumes/animations, which the less said about the better!).Overall, if you are really eager to play this game but feeling hesitant like I was, I recommend using a guide to help you with the first few levels and eventually you will find yourself devouring the adrenaline rush of running around this freakishly beautiful, gothic castle. Haunting Ground truly felt like I was reading a book, watching a movie and playing a game all at once and as a result, has earned itself a place on my gaming hall of fame. I am really pleased to see the game's recent surge in popularity as you never know, we may eventually get a remaster!5 stars all around.

Haunting Ground is one of those survival horrors 'with a difference' - a sub-genre which has flourished since the proliferation of Resident Evil titles, the success of Project Zeroes 1 and 2, and the ever growing shadow of the more intelligent and thoughtful Silent Hill titles. The difference here is that Fiona, the game's perky protagonist, is weak and feeble, and has absolutely no means of attacking anyone or anything herself. Seeing that she's now stuck in a castle being chased by a bevvy of unknown antagonists then, she'll need all the help she can get - and this comes in the form of a German Shephard, Hewie. What we get, then, is a Clock Tower style game in which you must tip-toe around, solve the traditional puzzles, and run and hide whenever you are discovered by the local madman. Or woman, as that may be - the game excells early on with the introduction of the deliciously confusing Daniella, a character who will never truly be topped after she departs from the main thrust of the action.Combat is handled by giving commands to Hewie, and after a short period of confusion this becomes second nature. You can also make him search, sit, shake hands with you, run away and other things, along with being able to praise or criticise him as need be. The Hewie / Fiona partnership is a strong one - playing as a helpless Fiona, you are almost pitifully reliant on Hewie, and as such you become quite endeared to him: his presence is calming and reassuring in a game which frequently comes very close to being terrifying. But then again, it's just survival horror. The characters play out their parts in rusty voices, and the script is just a tad short of being 'cleverly concealing', and is instead annoyingly incomplete. I've completed the game, and I'm still not sure why everyone was after Fiona to such an extent. Unless, that is, they were attracted to her: Fiona is one of a relatively new breed of young, nubile, underdressed and over-sexualised protagonists who, for all their failings, rake in the pundits merely for their feminine qualities. It's questionable as to whether the average male player feels more inclined to protect Fiona because she's a scared young girl, or because she's a sexy young thing.Well, whatever works for you. I have no shame in admitting I spent more than a fair few minutes deciding exactly which outfit to put her in, but what's more important is that I spent a good few days fully engrossed in an entertaining and involving game. It's easy to be genuinely worried about Fiona and, by the end, it's easy to see why Haunting Ground has been flying off the shelves to a far greater extent than Capcom considered possible - it's successful on almost every level.

I adore this game! I bought it as a one off, not expecting much, but I've become addicted to it. The use of background music is superb and I found myself relying mostly on audio cues to see if I was safe to move anywhere. I love most of the characters too, Daniella being my favourite being so beautiful yet unfeeling and sees herself as incomplete, and each of the stalkers chasing styles is different. Treat Hewie (your dog) well and train him up as fast as you can, you'll need his help and he'll need your love so be nice ok :D Once you've completed the game you'll get a secret room with art, music, cutscenes, a character gallery and alternate costumes for you and Hewie.Yeah you're pretty defenseless but I didn't find this a problem at all. The environments are lovely and there are traps littering the castle so beware.(As the title of my review says "Fortune favours the brave!) You'll find it pretty easy to outwit your first stalker Debilitas as he has the mind and intelligence of a child and will get clumsier and more frustrated if he can't find you (plus his footsteps are pretty loud). Daniella remembers where you tend to hide, will close doors to confuse/slow you down and can hide in closets to wait for you, or she'll wait outside the door for you to come out ion your own (plus the worst thing is she'll often double check a room so ignore coast clear signs unless you want to be stabbed by a large shard of glass). Riccardo is so creepy, seriously once you realise why he's chasing you you will not want to be hanging around! Plus he has a gun. A gun. He'll shoot your dog till you come out sometimes (the git) and in the worst ending, well just nope. Then there's Lorenzo, you won't know much about him near the beginning but he'll help you along...to begin with. Luckily he'll leave you alone for long periods of time to explore. This game definitely has replay value and even has hard mode for those who didn't feel hunted enough on a first playthrough. I love how the screen begins to saturate the more panicked Fiona feels and hidden or easily overlooked cutscenes or items can set her off. You'll even feel her heartbeat through the controller. There's no panic meter or stamina meter so you'll have to keep a close eye on her and Hewie to make sure you can withstand an encounter with a stalker (run and hide if you can't!) It's like a violent hide and seek game which I've fallen in love with. (If you want a bit of a preview Cry has done a Let's Play on youtube but don't spoil it for yourself okay? :D)

I have not played any of Capcom's games (like Clocktower) before, so when I got this it was a breath of fresh air from the hack and slash stuff I usually get (I was in fact going to buy Prince of Persia: TTT before my mum intervened and picked this out, so, thanks mum.) It's so weird not being able to do anything to an enemy except attempt to get your dust trail in their eyes. Yeah, you have to run away from everyone if you value your life - and I mean that: Daniella has serious issues. The game actually does scare you, which is so much harder to achieve in a game than a movie. A lot of this is being scared of what you can't see. It's almost paralysing when Hewie starts growling and you know that this is your early warning, that something's coming but you don't know where from, that you might run past a door and it's THERE... But believe me, it's worse by far when you're being chased by Debilitas, who was originally cast as the cave troll in Lord of the Rings (now you now..) Daniella is slower than Debilitas, and at least she's hot. He, on the other hand, is not, even if you give a shave and a haircut. He's just so big and freaky that you want to run away rather that fight, which is basically what the game is all about.Good luck trying to get rid of the sod, by the way. He can run faster than you, and will catch you up if you stop for anything unnecessary, like because you've run out of juice and can now only limp along in a pathetic girly way. If you can, get a retaliation point or hide, cos he's hard to take down if you're just doing it as you are, with no hench boots to help. Once you do have the hench boots to help, then you need to run away from Daniella. She's very slow. I mean, she walks after you. But if you get into a dead end situatation (oh, I'm good) with her, then she hacks at you with an impossibly durable bit of double glazing. It takes two hits to send you into complete panic, and if you fall over and get caught, then you can finally see what all that alcohol has been doing to the liver. For some reason, the maid seems to take a particular interest in this as well. Like I said, issues. Trouble at home?Yeah, so. This is a really good game, but hard hard hard. It will require you to think and feel in order to get past things that would simply be a matter of waving a sword around in other games. It's probably the best made game I've ever played. I haven't finished it yet.

To start of this game is very slow but alot more scary then as it continues gets less scary but always holds the "factor" of where is the next clock (to save game) or the next hiding place so DANIELLA does not slap me and slice me up or trying to run away from a perv trying to rape and make babies AND kill you all at one time but as i was saying it starts slow since you have no attack except from dashing into them and kicking which does not do much time to get away so the best bet is hiding in obvious places like behind curtains etc *the only hiding place i think would be invalid is the table in the basement at the start since theres no cover and her feet show* later on after being hugged bya fat of lard who calls himself a gardener you find a dog with a pitchfork in its leg releasing this dog sends you backk upstairs leading to debilitas who then HEWIE hurts him and he plods away crying lmaoBEAR IN MIND THIS GAME I HAVE DONE 10 HOURS OVER A COUPLE OF YEARS but i was only little like 9 or something took me a while to do so and i've not completed itBoss Battles:These are fairly easy requiring you to solve a few puzzles for you to be locked in a room to either kill by shaking your wrists and telling hewie is a good boy killing them or requiring you to push objects till they get shish kebabed lol their fairly easy and straight forward BEARING IN MIND THEIR IS A HARD MODEPuzzles:They vary since some are terribly straightforward while some take days of thought also files actually are worth reading in this game giving you coloured hints etc but if you stuble into the wrong room you can die!!!AI:They are really clever on normal mode and on hard even smarter running and making most hiding points invalid after you use them so running is a must.Items:They calm you down or run film or even make a golem do the YMCA so typing SALTATIO will make fiona restored of energyOverall: since im 15 now i still enjoy this game since when you reach the end you will not be able to remember how to do the beginning which gives it huge amounts of replay value i come back to it alot it must be capcoms finest game in my eyes 110% 10/10 buy it!!

As I've personally read the reviews so far on Amazon.co.uk about 'Haunting Ground' - they seem to be written by people who don't know what they are talking about!. This however is my personal review on buying this great Capcom title. The lead character and heroine is Fiona Belli, a quiet 18 year old student on visit to see their relatives with her parents Ugo & Ayla in a remote country somewhere in Europe. However things turn for the worse when her parents get involved in a car accident leaving her unconcious and alone. You wake in the cellar of the Castle that was once owned by her late great Grandfather. Now it's in the hands of a mysterious keeper called Riccardo. The game will unravel itself through as you play. The game can last a while even if you do keep playingPoints On Buying- 16+ Age Rating, Definately For Die-Hard Capcom Fans- Challenging Survival-Horror & Different Style Of Play- Good Graphics- Good Storyline- Interesting Characters- Expanded Enviroments- Fear Changes Vision- Forge Items To HelpPoint On Not Buying- Challenging Can Become Murder!- Puzzling, Sometimes Can Get You Stuck For A While- Backtracking At Various Parts- Saving Is Needed Often- Forging Items Is Hard To Get Used To- Can Become Repetative & BoringAll In All, the game needs to be experienced to be believed & judged. I loved this title personally but it's not for the faint-hearted. I thought the game was different from when I seen the cover (which attracted me first) however it did slightly dissapointed me. Good luck on getting adjusted into the theme/style, it took me a few hours & i've mastered it.BUY IT IF YOU LIKE CAPCOM & SURVIVAL-HORROR. I SUGGEST IF YOU CAN - RENT IT FIRST.

this is scariest game i have ever played, i haven't played many survival horror but i have silent hill 2 and i find it scaryer than that because foina cant pull her shotgun or chainsaw out and take the enemy on you just have to run.On one part of the game you unlock a restroom (and i new there must have been some relevance to it, thats why i unlocked it) but i dont have much time to look because deblitas keeps needing the toilet!! it all went quite and then i heard footsteps so i jumped into the bath (to hide) and deblitas came in with his scary music nad started waking towards the bath like he's going to open the shower curtan and i'm like oh god he's gonna open it.but he walks away and goes for a pee in the thing on the wall. then leaves. i get out of the bath and look around at the other end where the cubicles are and I here him coming so I hide in a cublicle, anyway he comes in walks towards the cubicle and im like crap he needs a dump this time!!!!!!!!!! he opens the door i throw a febale kick which next 2 nothing and run i plan which route i will take and i decide to run up these ladders (thinking he cant get up) when he starts climbing im like **** he can climb!!!!!!!!!!!! i ended up getting killed.you probably heard about all the features and everything about this game and probably dont think its very scary so i tried to tell you how scary the game was.if you want to play a original game (although there is clock tower) and want to be scared as hell then this the game for youand dont listen to OPS2 reviews or officall websites, read some customer reviews from gamefaqs.hope you get the game and enjoy it.

For those of you that have not played Haunting Ground or even haven't heard of it, this game is a little gem that unfortunately did not get as much recognition it deserved. Haunting Ground is one of my personal favorites of the survival horror genre and has become a classic 11 years on. If you are into a slighly more slower paced and no combat survival horror adventure where running and hiding are your only main tactic, then HG is for you. I would also say that fans of the early Resident Evil games might also like this as it shares some similarities and is also published and developed by Capcom, however (unlike Resident Evil) this game focuses on a much more stealth like approach. You explore a creepy castle as an 18 year old woman named Fiona, who has been kidnapped. Along the way you accompany a dog named Huwie who helps to fend off enemy's throughout the game. This makes the game much more fun and exciting controlling a dog as well as your character, and doesn't get tedious or boring. I won't go on too much about the story as I wouldn't want to spoil the game, however Haunting Ground is by far one of the best survival horrors out there today and if you fancy trying out a classic game on your PS2, I strongly recommend this one.

Haunting ground involves an 18 year old girl called Fiona Belli, she wakes up from a car accident involving her parents and finds herself locked in a gothic castle not knowing if her parents are still alive. The first enemy is Debilitas, he chases you most places and you have to outsmart him. He has a mind like a 5 year old so its quite easy. If Fiona gets too scared the screen changes to "panic mode" and makes things alot more tense. She stumbles and falls over and the music in the backgrounds quite scary. It really gets my heart racing but i try not to let it get to me. The easiest way to get away from enemies is to hide until theyve gone. There'll be tons of optional hiding places throughout the game for you. Most of the time i stop playing cause im too scared but i end up going back to it after a few minutes, its like addictive. The story line is just amazing and its really realistic im proper pleased i got it. I hope this gives you some idea of Haunting ground, if you get it good luck. x

I loved this game it is like CLOCK TOWER 3 but with some improvements and a very disturbing story witch I like but the only flaw is when you sometimes tried to hide from the enemies when you play further it gets harder but it is still a good horror game.
