I'm cursed: Every filter i've ever had has always had a rattling impeller- these being an interpet PF mini (the worst filter in the world- suction cups that kept coming loose, how fiddly it was and and how ineffective it was) them I moved onto a TetraTec Easycrystal 250 (how extremely ineffective it was as i even saw fish waste coming back into the tank, how you couldnt access the impeller and also how loud it was). The Easycrystal eventually broke altogether and so my search for an effective and quiet filter began again. I heard that the Fluval U1 was very good but there were some extremely criticising reviews of it as well. I had been eyeing the stingray since i ditched the PF mini and so decided to buy it.The reason I needed a quiet filter is because my tank is right next to my bed (and i can't move it anywhere else). The stingray came in a compact box and was smaller than I had expected. I was a bit worried when steam came out of the filter when I submerged the filter in the water, but apparently thats just the zeolite reacting with the water. I turned the filter on and the sudden strong current blew my curious fish across to the other side of the tank. I then aimed the head at the side of the tank which rectified my problem. The filter was quiet apart from a small rattling noise. After a couple of hours the stingray had cleaned up the mucky water the EasyCrystal had left behind leaving it crystal clear. I was impressed until:Two days later the rattling noise was louder and the sound continued to grow until it started to irritate and frustrate me, this must have been a faulty unit which was surprising as there was an orange QC passed sticker on the box. I couldn't return the filter as it must have already been dirty after sucking in all the muck from the TetraTec.When i first opened the filter i saw the powerhead was easily removable and so when I decided I had to do something I turned off the filter and removed the powerhead. (This was turning out to be a messy job, I turned on the powerhead deparate from the water and the filter. The impeller was rattling its heart out. I did a ton of research on the internet with the most popular soloution being removing the impeller and rubbling a light-medium coat of vaseline all around and onto the impeller. After replacing the impeller into the powerhead and powerhead into the filter I replaced the filter into the tank and turned it on. I walked back and trod on the impeller cover (arrgh!), after replacing the impeller cover I turned on the filter. The filter was still rattling but this was expected as the impeller needed to spin to settle the vaseline in place. After about 4 hours the filter was so quiet the only way I knew it was running was the water movement at the side. It was unbelievable! So now there are no more irritations and sleepless nights.Back to the filter: Now that it's quiet and it's VERY VERY effective i think it's an excellent filter for the price and would definately recommend this filter to entry level fishkeepers.

This pump has its good points and its bad points. One of the best things about it is that it is pretty powerful. The other day a lot of dirt got stirred up in the tank when I was trying to clean it out and this pump cleaned it up incredibly quickly. The fish love the pump, they like a bit of activity in the water and it is really like a fast moving stream for them. More negatively there is certainly a danger of fish getting trapped behind it. We have noticed this as we keep the back of the pump on the side closest to our armchairs, so we have been lucky not to lose any fish this way but others in the reviews have complained about it,and I suppose it would be more typical to keep the pump on the back of the tank where you might not be able to see a trapped fish. It has only happened twice in a year though, and then only with small fish, so I guess it is largely bad luck when it does happen. I have been pleased that this pump doesn't get clogged up with snails. For some reason my wife has bad luck with snails in her tanks and she used to get infuriated with them clogging up the nozzle coming out of the pump. I don't know whether it is the slit shaped opening on this pump, or if it is the strength of the pump, but there have been no snail related cloggings whatsever since we put it in. Other pumps we have had have ended up with a full snail blockage in the nozzle. Perhaps the biggest issue is that this pump will demand new zeocarb capsules. If you are not too good at remembering to change filter materials and want to make sure you do so more often then this might be a good thing for you. Personally I have never found it necessary to change filter media too often before, but the zeocarb capsules in here will just start rattling really loud if you rinse them out. Give it a few weeks and they will stop rattling but by the end of that few weeks you will have gone mad, and then if you rinse them out again they will start rattling all over. It is probably a good thing to be reminded to change filter material but this seems a bit too often even if you are in the habit. Having the zeocarb and the sponge both in one pump is a good idea though, as you can change one and keep the other in there to maintain bacteria.

I have one of each size of stingray filter, and they all have shown excellent performance to-date.They are quiet, easy to clean, reliable, and they look good too. There is an issue with the cost of zeolite replacements. My advice is to take them out from day one and discard them. The zeolite does effectively remove ammonia from your tank, but that is what the bacteria are meant to do in your filter. The idea of 'cycling' a tank, is to cultivate a nice balance of good bacteria in your filter and gravel. If you remove the ammonia chemically with the zeolite, you starve off the bacteria, and so your tank can not be maintained unless you endlessly replace your zeolite every 4 weeks. If you're new to fish keeping, I suggest you read up on 'cycling an aquarium' before you start buying the fish. So, remove the zeolite cartridges and stuff the space with filter wool or other fish-friendly filter material.Second issue is injury to fish - not from being sucked up the filter - this is NOT an issue with adult fish and has never once happened. But when you suction cup the filter to the glass, a very small 0.5cm gap remains between glass and filter. So what, you might think? What could fit down there? A guppy will, and a tetra, and even a danio. I know from experience! Fish will find any crevice in your tank to explore/jump into, and if you don't spot them in time, they're dead.Solution? A non-toxic sheet of tank friendly silicon did the trick for me, tucked between the filter and the glass, or you can stuff filter wool behind the filter. Anything to stop little fishies going in there.Pros - Filters quick, quietly, lots of water agitation for great oxygen exchange. No noise, simple to clean. Lasts a long time, even in hard water.Cons - the zeolite cartridges are not needed in a healthy cycled tank. Using them can make your tank dependent on them as they can starve the good bacteria. You need those good bacteria in your filter to keep your water parameters healthy!Warning - small fish like guppies, danio and tetra can get trapped between filter and glass. Use a non-toxic material like filter wool to fill the gaps. It is not suited to fry! They get sucked into the filter and die.

What is there not to like? Every time I clean it there's not a morsel of debris inside the filter. The whole thing is as sparkling as the turtle tank itself. It seems the filter ingeniously manages to shift all the debris to the bottom of the tank, beneath the rocks and hidden away. When I clean the tank, (more often than previously now that I've bought this cracking filter), it is a saving grace to see that all that muck has been tucked safely away. The stench from the heap is horrendous and its colour a grey/brown pop shade. It looks not unlike really the hazy natural looking colour of the water in the tank, which changed dramatically when I set the tank up with dazzling new lights the same time as I replaced the filter. The hazy light effect took a day or so to gain full effect. Now it is amazing. You simply cannot see through the murk like haze in my six foot tank, making my very own tank set up an individual and original masterpiece. My next purchase is going to be aquarium freshener. Several of my friends hinted at this final touch, so that my two yellow belly sliders have a real home from home with finishing touches. My best friend (female) suggested maybe two or three fresheners so that they can be located at different points in my perfect tank. I'm so happy. The only thing to hinder my ecstatic euphoria is a feeling of constant sickness, and indeed, vomitting at least six to seven times daily, with very loose diarrhea. It could be that I'm still getting over excited each time I marvel at this perfect abyss of tranquility through to the inside the glass tank. Long live my filter and all of its delights. And sweet dreams to my excited turtles who are either banging the tanks glass and staring longingly at me, or asleep at the far end of the tank away from their rockery.

When I received the filter I panicked when I looked at the box because it said it was for up to 50L, whereas in the picture above it shows up to 37.8L. I thought I had been sent the next size up and I know that this is a powerful filter so you really do need the right size. After thoroughly checking, I found that I had received the right product, but the picture above is actually showing US measurements! The filter was very easy to install, literally out of the box and straight into the tank. When you first switch the filter on there is a whoosh of cloud, but it's just the carbon and zeolite cartridges activating. I have had the filter for about a week now, and it's kept the water crystal clear whereas before it was cloudy.I'm not sure when the cartridges will need replacing yet though, but to avoid upsetting the good bacteria, I will rinse one out in siphoned tank water and replace the other. If your tank has high ammonia levels then this will not solve the problem. The cartridges will HELP, but you will still need to buy live bacteria such as Nutrafin Cycle or put media in from an established tank i.e. decorations etc.Although the instructions say to keep the filter at least 1cm below the surface of the water, I put it just below the waterline to agitate and aerate the water to give the fish more oxygen. They seem to love it so I'm happy.I fully recommend this filter as it's a good price, the replacement filter pads and cartridges aren't too expensive, considering you only need to change one of them once a month (or less), gives great water agitation and aeration, and the filter isn't too big for the tank (my tank is 33 UK litres), and most importantly it does the job!

I ordered the Elite Stingray Filter 10 for my 43 litre tank on Friday afternoon the day before Christmas Eve to replace my old noisy Fluval pump. Imagine my suprise at receiving it the following day Christmas Eve at 11:30am, what brilliant service from Royal Mail!I replace my old Fluval mini 200L/Hr pump which was noisy (loud humming) and the rubber feet had broken but otherwise worked okay ( approx 7 years old). Water was a bit brown though and had been for some time even after cleaning water and filter. I would have ordered another Fluval but I had never been that happy with the one I had got, the flow was never that good and I had to put it at the bottom of the tank to reduce the noise (I'd super glued the impeller to stop rattling when it was new).Back to the Elite pump.I followed the instruction which were easy and turned it on and it rattled! So I followed the recommendation of another buyer and put Vasseline on the impellor and re fitted, silence, no more rattle and woosh the water flow was brilliant. I set it just below the water line to create a wash to help oxygenate the tank and my 4 goldfish loved it. Once a day for about an hour my fish used to spend time at the top of the tank gasping but now no longer, they really seem to be much happier than before, water is no longer brown and has remained clear. A very good product at this stage(5 days of use)still silent and a brilliant postal service.

I've been using Elite 5 for a small betta tank for nearly a week now, and so far I've been quite happy with it. The option to adjust the direction of the flow is quite good - it's now pointing to the side, hence less current. My male betta seems to be quite grateful for it (the one I had before was the splashing-bubbling type which created a lot of surface disturbance with little effect). It did rattle for the first hour or so, but I turned it off and then on again a couple of times, and it stopped. Not sure whether there's a connection, but it just so happened. Now it's running pretty quietly, can't complain there. Although I do have Vaseline ready, just in case :-)(read other reviews to know why)I took one star off because of the zeolite/carbon cartridges - they seem to be made of rather low quality plastic, and are a little useless. I tried taking both out to fill the space with fluval biomax bio rings, but couldn't take one off, so had to keep it there (with rings on the other side). I'm not prepared to pay so much money for a little piece of plastic, so will attempt at removing the other later on. The cover is a little fiddly and hard to open too, but overall it's a good filter and I would recommend it for a small tank.

This is a really ugly but really great little power filter, but you need to do some 'upgrading' from the stock product. Remove the pre-packed ZeoCarb baskets; these control ammonia, so your aquarium won't cycle with them in! You don't need carbon unless you are medicating fish... I fill the spaces inside either side of the motor with biomedia (I use small size Fluval Biomax). Keep the triangular sponge that fits behind the removable 'tail', or 'fin' for additional surface for biological filtering/particles filtration. I usually use aquarium poly wool/floss stuffed into the tail bit; this traps large and small particles and keeps the water super clear.I change the floss every two weeks and you usually don't need to clean the rest of the filter at all. I've also cut other types of pads to fit into this space such as a phosphate remover pad and it was working really well. It's a powerful filter that's easy to set up and clean, and it has an outlet with directional adjustment. If you have a bigger tank, there are also bigger versions. The only bad thing about this filter is its ugly look - perhaps Hagen could do an all black version, just saying :)

I recently bought the Stingray 15 for my 80 litre aquarium. Very happy with it so far - it’s so much quieter and smaller than my previous semi-submerged filter, so my goldfish have more space to swim around and I’m not tortured by the sound of running water anymore. The water jet from the filter is incredibly strong - I managed to make a whirlpool in the tank! The water flow was too strong for the fish to swim well (and they’re big fatties!) and they were so stressed out. Then I read a few more reviews on the Stringray models and the trick is to turn the outlet nozzle towards the glass behind the filter. The water hits the glass, then spreads throughout the tank more slowly and evenly. No more super-strong water blaster hitting the sides to create whirlpools! I haven’t had to clean the filter yet, but have noticed that dirt/poo collects towards the front of the tank now and is much easier to clean up; my old filter sent it all to the back where it got trapped between plants and made cleaning a real chore. I’m will very likely go with the Stingray 5 when I set up my 30 litre tank for tetras next year.

I got a new filter because I wanted one that was more quiet and this filter is brilliant. There was a small vibration noise that I could hear only just so took the advice of another review and put a little non scented vaseline on the impeller and now its practically silent. I also had the problem of green water in my tank, algae. As I'm new to having fish I'd been looking all over the internet for ways of getting a nice clean tank. I started of taking out all the ornaments in the tank, cleaning the glass, clean the filter, using a gravel cleaner and doing about a 40% water change every 2 days, I think I done this for about a week and a half, now they get about a 25-30% every 3 - 4 days, and the tank is crystal clear. The filter is picking up loads of stuff too, I tend to put the net over the bit at the bottom when removing the filter just to catch any big bits of rubbish that come loose. Also this filter is very easy to clean and comes fully with instructions that are easy for first time fish keepers like myself!I'm happy, and happy fishes too!

I’ve been keeping tropical fish for many years and I can’t bear noisy filters. This filter is silent and efficient. I’ve noted in other reviews that buyers find the water flow too strong. I turn the outlet control to face the tank glass and this reduces the flow substantially and still filters efficiently I removed the carbon as I have a planted tank and carbon drives out the natural co2 that plants need to grow and having got a bigger tank with a horrendously noisy filter I’ve bought the stingray 15 to run along with the 10 giving me more than enough filtration for an 80 litre tank. Having the stingray placed about 6 inches below the surface with the outlet facing the glass sends the flowupwards creating enough gentle surface movement to provide oxygen for fish without causing the fast flowing water that upsets my fish. I have had huge tanks with super quiet external filters in the past but to have an external filter on such a small tank is almost impossible so I have found that the stingrays are the best alternative for me.

Powerful filter!, I have a 110ltr tank live plants and moss, snails and a 9in fantail goldfish and this filter is more than capableEven in my 110ltr tank with only one big fish i have needed to direct the water flow towards the back of the tank to slow it down a bitIm trying to find a balance between the flow not too high that it spins my water lettuce around like a washing machine would but not too low to annoy my goldfish with a constant jet of water in her faceIt looks so odd in the tank that it actually looks great, especially because it does such a good job too, it is easy to clean (once you have understood how it comes apart) i have live plants so have removed one of the media (little baskets)but thats a personal choiceIf i had the recommended tank size for this product and smaller fish, i don't think my review would be as positive though, i am Just fortunate that lack of funds dictated this purchase rather than one more powerful than this is

When I first got my little oranda, it lived in a tiny 10 litre tank with a cheap little filter for 2 weeks. (Shame on me.) So I brought this power filter since the water looked cloudy. It was so cheap on offer! (Brought it on here for £13.) 2 hours later, the water was crystal clear. A week later, I decided to upgrade the tank to a 71 litre but had to fill it to 30 litres for the current filter. Wished I've upgraded everything sooner and brought the next sized up filter. Even with the new, big tank and the Stingray 5 filter, it can still blow my fish across the tank so careful where you aim the nozzle unless you're sure your fish enjoys the exercise.-Powerful (for the correct sized tank)-Does the job,Clear water.-Happier fish. Look at him!-Stuff some filter wool behind the filter if you're afraid of little fish getting stuck between the glass and filter.-Silent. I can barely hear it though I don't mind the constant drone of regular filters.

This filter is great for my 50L tank. I had been using an Interpet PF1 but the noisy buzzing it made was rattling the aquarium lid and annoying the wife. After reading Amazon reviews on a number of different filters I opted to buy this Elite Stingray 10.And I was not disappointed. It is quiet, even straight out of the box. Not silent, but certainly not noticeable. And if you have any other noise in the room, eg a TV on, then this is effectively silent in comparison.Although others mention the old "coat the impeller with Vaseline" trick, I quite like being able to detect that the filter is working when I walk past.Perhaps when there is some growth on the impeller it will become naturally silent? The only downside seems to be the use of two small zeolite/carbon filter cartridges, one of which should be changed every month according to the instructions. This is probably because they are quite small. In summary, a very quiet and efficient filter.

Excellent filter and a good size. Only negative is the filter media which is a bit of a joke to be honest. I replaced the two plastic mini cages with filter foam cut to size and the difference is amazing. As a previous reviewer suggested I packed the impeller with Vaseline and the filter is so quiet I had to check if it's running now and then. As mentioned before as well, if you have guppies, danios or similar I suggest cutting filter foam strips and wedge them in a thin line between the filter and glas to make sure they don't explore behind it and thus get stuck. I'm running the Stingray 15 together with a small UV unit in a 60 litre tank which has two ancient corydoras (they're past 18 years),one Blackmoor and an Oranda. Since they're all adults and of a decent size the tank is slightly overstocked hence the UV unit but it seems that in combination with the Stingray 15 the water quality is now at a better level ph and nitrate wise ?
