This is a great filter. I thought I would give it a go after having 2 awfully loud All Pond Solutions 1000EF+ filtersThe filter is easy to install and includes all the filter media to get you started. I would however recommend upgrading from the supplied cheaper looking ceramic rings to Fluvals Biomax ceramic rings or even better, Seachem matrix as that can also support nitrate eating bacteria unlike ceramic media which cannot. The only bad point to this filter is that the intake and output fittings that attach to the top of your tank are kinda cheap and flimsy, with only suction cups to hold them in place which is a hastle to get them on straight and to not get pulled to one side by the tensionfrom the hosing; they also have one suction cup on the front and one on the back to grip the glass on both sides but if you have a background the rear cup will not stick to it!The solution to this is that the hoses and fittings from the All Pond Solutions filter I mentioned earlier fits the 107 and 207 perfectly and are sold on their website. Make sure to get their hose too as the Fluval hose won't fit the APS fittings! The All Pond Solutions intake and output are much sturdier and clamp on to the glass for a much better hold and also include a spray bar which is sold separately with the Fluval.Another good point about this filter is it is very easy to prime it. It takes only a few pumps of the priming handle even when the canister is empty, you don't even have to fill it with water first which you do with the APS one or you'd be pumping it all day, just make sure the output nozzle is above the waterline if you're priming it from empty. This can be done by draining a bit of water out of your tank or during a water change. After you've got it started a top tip is to tilt or rock it side to side gently and this will remove most of the trapped air bubbles quicker but it may still take a few hours or so for it all to leave the system and for it to reach the lowest noise level. It is pretty quiet for a canister filter. Once all air has been purged out I'd say the noise level is comparable to the fan of a PC or games console. If you also run an air pump on your tank you will definitely not hear this filter over that. Just make sure if you do that this doesn't suck up any of the bubbles as this will make it louder again! This is the perfect sized filter for my 160 litre tank; I'd recommend it for tanks 1m wide. The box says up to 220 litres but those size tanks are sometimes 1.2m which this may be a little on the small side for though; it may struggle to push the water that far, so I'd recommend the Fluval 307 or even the 407 if you can afford it for 200 litres and larger.Cleaning is very convenient as all 3 trays can be pulled out and put back at once with the handle which I thought was a nice touch. Also you cannot put it together wrong as everything lines up one way unlike the APS 1000EF+ which you can line the trays up wrong, then have to take apart again.Pros:Quiet for an external filterNot too expensive for a good brandCanister feels well madeFilter media includedEasy to primeCons:Tubing/fittings cheap feeling (but easily upgradable)Not as quiet as an internal filterOverall I am happy with my purchase ? and I've included some photos of it with the other manufacturers hosing and fittings attached so you can see what I'm talking about. If you are thinking of getting an All Pond Solutions filter I would definitely recommend paying a bit extra and getting this instead. The 207 is usually £101.99 everywhere online I've seen it which is a bit more than the cheap brands but still cheaper than other premium brands like Eheim.

My son bought me the Fluval 107 from Amazon for my birthday - thanks son well listened. I have it hooked up to a 110 litre Blackwater tank, the 107 is placed on the floor 1.3 metres below the aquarium water level, the maximum pump height is 1.4 m so a little to spare. It took me 90 minutes to set the 107 up fully, removing kit out of the way and carrying out the actual install. I was double checking each stage carefully from the excellent manual. Two aspects of the install are kind of tricky firstly connecting the two hoses to the tank lip and priming the canister to get a constant flow. The black ribbed hosing provided is 2.5m long and has to be cut roughly in half to provide a flow and return.Make sure you have a sharp box cutter or similar and cut the valley between two ribs either side.It is most important to test fit the inlet pipe carefully, I would suggest cutting 150mm from the tank side rather than 100mm suggested in the manual. But before cutting make sure the outflow hose is long enough to reach the canister on the floor. The inlet flow from the tank to the canister is initially a gravity siphon flow before the filter is up and running. I had to shorten the inlet pipe about 50mm to make sure it was not too close to the tank bed. It is easy to cut with a junior hacksaw. Just make sure it’s cut square and you have removed any loose plastic around the end.The ribbed hose pipe is relatively stiff so make sure the hose retaining clips, with their suction cups, are correctly aligned. See my photo below, I placed them side by side to fit a cut out on my tank hood. The retaining clips are a fiddle to clip into place I found it easier to the rear retainers first.Once all connections are made and the outlet is positioned temporarily above the water level use the pump to suck water into the canister. When you are sure it’s full of water connect the power, water should flow out within a second or two. I had problems with air in the circuit, the ribbed hose holds a fair bit of air after three tries I solved this by gently tapping the flow hose to release the air - before I did this the unit ran for about 2 minutes then stopped. The supplied media is all good but I did not use the bag of carbon, I used four plastic pot scourers in the bottom tray these have an effective surface area slightly higher than K1 media, and have been tested to be equally efficient at a fraction of the cost, and far superior to ceramics. The box has a useful reference of the media supplied:- Bio Foam Max the blue one, Bio Foam the white one, Bio Foam + the black one, a bag of carbon, a phosphate removal pad and Quick-Clear fibre pad.Noise wise the unit ran for about 6 hours with very little noise, it then increased to the level of a faint refrigerator. I’m not sure why this occurred but it’s easily ignored. The Fluval 107 is a well made canister filter with nice features, even the suction cups have a small tab to make removal easier. Follow the manual carefully. My sequence of media in the left top trays is the scouring pads in the bottom tray, then in the top tray the Bio-Foam+ followed by the Quick-Clear, then the phosphate pad held in place by the plastic retaining cap.

I've been using this canister filter for 3 months now. It replaced a Penn-Plax Cascade canister filter that started leaking around the 4th year I had it and nothing I did would stop the leak.Pros:It's extremely quiet. I can't even hear it running if I stand right next to it and sometimes I have to check if it's actually turned on.It's well designed. I love the latch for removing the tubing so I can take it apart and clean it. The media trays fit perfectly snug so water doesn't flow around them and skip the media. This was my biggest complaint about the Penn-Plax. I just wish this had a handle for carrying it.I also love the way all the media come out at once instead of having to remove them one at a time. The trays are large enough to fit a ton of media. It's so easy to get it running. Just pump it a few times and let it fill up and plug it in and it just works.Cons:This doesn't include a spray bar? How is that possible? It would cost them like a nickle to throw one in the package. Doesn't even make sense. The inlet and outlet tubes that hang in your tank are black but the connecting pieces that connect the tubes together are as white as can be. It looks terrible when you look into the tank and see all the black tubing in the back next to extremely white pieces so bright that it throws everything off. Hate it. Make those pieces black too.The clamps that hold the lid onto the canister doesn't actually pull the lid tight against the body. It just kind of keeps the lid from flying off. My Penn-Plax did this as well and eventually leaked right out of the lid seam. You would think the clamps tightened the lid against the body to keep a water tight seal but they don't. I expect this filter to eventually leak because of this just like my old filter. The tubing this came with seems flimsy and cheap. Nothing like the heavy duty tubing that comes with the Penn-Plax filters. They need to be beefed up a little or re-designed with thicker material. So far I'm happy with this filter and would recommend it to others. If it starts leaking within the next few years it would be a dud for sure. If Fluval would fix the issues I have with this filter they'd have a home run with it but as of right now it's just a pretty good filter but not great.

Just like my fluval 406 before, the 407 Is a powerhouse. The flow is the best in the industry. It is much quieter than my 406 and darn near silent in an imaginarium open stand. The red handle to pick up the trays is an awesome idea. Sometimes it’s the smallest things that matter. The bottom medium bio foam is a bit thinner to allow the placement of the polishing pads. I always cut my own polishing pads from LTW Home so this is super convenient as they fit better. Polishing the water great. I also replaced all the first mechanical filtration foams with the green “fine” LTW foam. Like all fluvals there is so much mechanical filtration so the water quality is always visually crystal. After the polishing pads I fill the next two trays with seachem matrix(half way), then carbon on top. Nitrite and nitrate all zero. I briefly tried the oase biomaster 600 but it kept leaching bubbles into the tank. It was also a neat filter but I should have never left Fluval. I have used them for years.Fluval is one of the few brands moving forward instead of back. Good for them. If you want to avoid micro bubbles do the following on Fluval filters:Make sure to tighten the “in” hose to the connector well and lube the main gasket with lots of silicone grease. DON’T OVERFLOW THE TRAYS WITH MEDIA. This is a big one, maybe the main reason. Mine sucked/cavitated air until I realized the matrix was stopping too much flow which makes the filter work too hard and therefore make micro bubbles. Let the filter expel air naturally don’t mess with it! (it could take 6 hours for all air to escape) these filters never need tilting to purge. They seem to find a good balance on their own. Then just clean the filter out every three or four months and the main gasket will last the whole year or longer. (They compress over time and will eventually leak if not changed yearly.). If you follow these rules you will have found the best filter in the world for tanks up to 55 gallons. I would go with the Fx series for 55 and over if you want to reduce nitrates with media.

I'm new to Fluval--replacing three 25 year-old Magnum 350s with two 407s for a 125 gallon setup. Here's my initial impressions on the 407's now I've installed them:Pros:- Incredibly quiet- Really novel design to easily service media and foam- Really nice design of the Aquastop valves- Very high flow rate as expected- Overall quality seems very good- Parts and media seem to be widely available- Good warranty (3 years and they will add two more years if your register within 30 days)Cons:- The provided ribbed hoses with pre-fitted ends were too short for a 125 gallon setup- Ribbed hose does not accommodate in-line heaters--from Fluval--"we do not support in-line heaters--they have never been tested"- Because of the two above issues,I reused my existing exit smooth tubing--the 407 tube fittings on the canister do work for standard 5/8 ID smooth tubing- Initial priming is difficult if you have any loops in your hoses as I need to with the inline heaters (they tell you not to have any loops!)- No description of the various foam elements used in the 407 in the manual--nothing about the purpose or model numbers or which ones fit which cannisters--I eventually found some, but not all of the information on Fluval's website. Will be calling them...I don't yet have any experience with reliability, servicing. or cleaning it, so I will report back on that later. How long will these pumps last? I'm sure they won't last 25 years as the Magnums did with no major component failures. BTW the magnums still work fine, but were discontinued a few years ago--now its getting hard to find routine maintenance parts (e.g., o-rings and gaskets) for them--thus my switch. You may ask why I did not stick with Marineland offerings since I had such good luck with them? I did not like their new canister offerings compared with Fluval.

I now own two of these awesome 407 Series 7 filters from Fluval. I won one of these several months ago and finally set it up. This filter is quiet and efficient. As you can see in the picture the water is crystal clear in my slightly overstocked 55 gallon community. Also the size of the filter does not take up a lot of space, I have it in a recycle pail from a local chain store in case of any leaks (No leakes to date). The new design is efficient in clearing even the smallest particles in the water column, it is set up for easy cleaning and has enough capacity for diy'g you own media make it more efficient. In the several months of being in service, the only time you have noise,is when the water level drops and if it's not in time when I am doing a water change, I lower the flow and problem solved until the next water change. The flow control can also be used to reduce the flow while feed. The have now introduced a UV clarifier, a skimmer and a spray bar. The unit comes with a spray wand, which works well at breaking up the surface allowing for better gas exchange. I am thinking of adding the spray for better tank circulation and rotation of the column of water in a rolling motion front to back as opposed to just moving the top level of water around tank. This will add to better cleaning, surface agitation and gas exchange. In my opinion this is a great filter and alternative to a larger canister which may be overkill in certain situations. It moves water and the GPH is 383 US Gal/h. Most times the MFGR's states the GPH w/o media in the filter. A canister that won't break the bank and is not huge if you want to hide the filter under or behind the tank, depending on the size of the stand. I own a few different canister from other manufacturers and this one is a cut above. Check it out, I think you will be happy.

I am replacing a Fluval 305 after 5 years of continuous use. I have a 55 gallon tank which is in the shape of a Trivial Pursuit piece.I watched videos about the 407 and the upgrades but did not think it would be a big deal. I was mistaken. The 407 is a much better design in every way.Primer - The lever is much easier to grab and move. The priming took 5 movements to start it. The older one would take 20+ to get it moving. On average, 45 movements to get the air out and it working. With it located under the stand and back against a wall, it was awkward to get to it and it was not fun to prime.Hose Connection - OMG! This is the best part of the redesign! The lever which locks it onto the top of the filter actually works and is soooo easy to push down. Adjusting the flow has not really changed. But the locking is way better. Way better. Way BETTER! the old one would pop up after you locked it sometimes. Not this one.Impeller Cover - They redesigned the impeller cover and got rid of that ridiculous clear algae magnet piece which was on the gasket itself. There is only one tab now, not two, easier to take off and put on.Media Tray - There is a handle for the trays!!!!! So easy to get out and separate them. The other media trays would stick together and the media would fling out everywhere when you pry them apart.Filter noise - The older one, you could hear the impeller and know it was running...until it made noise and was not cycling at all. This one makes almost ZERO noise. The air pump masks whatever sound the filter is making. AMAZING!This is the best filter I have used. It is powerful, quiet, easy to clean, and the new design is well thought out and works really well.Great Job Fluval!!! My fish told me to thank you! Not that I speak fish .... nor do I actually talk to them.. well, not all the time.

I am using this in a 25 Gal tank. It works extremely well. I cannot hear it running from a few feet away. It has a number of baskets for different media, and is extremely well thought out. I swapped out the included black hoses for more flexible clear silicone Uxcell hoses, and they worked very well with the included hose clamps. I did not use the included inflow/outflow hardware, I used glass. The only thing I can ding it for is a lack of good hand holds. The pump head lifts off easily by holding onto the clips that secure the head onto the lower half. These clips are acceptable hand holds for moving and lifting the unit, but there is a risk that if your hand slips, you could accidentally release the pump head from the body. You just have to be careful.I use a Jardli glass intake tube with a protein skimmer. The main intake is a grate, but the skimmer is an open tube with a floating guard. One morning, TWO of my bettas managed to get over the top of the floating skimmer head and got sucked into the pump. This is not a problem with the pump, and indeed the pump design may have saved their lives. I eventually notice some missing fish and start panicking and side-eyeing the cat. I took the unit apart, expecting the worst, and what do I see inside but two happy blue dummies staring back at me. So I can confirm the pump is relatively fish safe, and the first chamber offers enough room for smaller fish who get accidentally sucked up. I zip tied some mesh from an onion bag over the intake to stop that happening again, but that was a disaster mitigated by good design.

I’ve had my fluval 306 for the last 4 years. The primer doesn’t work so I have to suck on the outlet pipe to get rid of the access air (not a nice job) I only have to do this when I clean the spray bar every few months. The plastic aqua stop valve broke a few months ago and you cannot get the red plastic lever separately, you have to buy a whole new aquastop valve. The valve has been getting harder to get on and off and the red plastic lever was going again. I was thinking of getting a replacement (my other 306 in another fish tank has no problems and is easy to remove and refit everything). I saw the 307 which is an upgrade and ordered it.Everything seems to be the same pipe size wise and I even fitted my old spray bar and used the old piping. The lever for stopping and starting the water on the aquastop is now a lot stronger. The red lever that can break has also been changed to make it stronger. It looks a better bit of kit all round. I found it easy to set up, all the pipes were already in place so that made it easier. It was easy to prime and get going. It seems like it has a low hum like the 306. As soon as the door is closed on the fish tank cabinet you can’t hear it. When starting the 306 you could hear for a few hours then it settled down. With the 307 this doesn’t seem to happen and it’s the same low hum all the time. They’ve even made it easier to get the baskets out. So far it’s only early days but I’m very pleased with the product. The only negative is the electric cable just like the 306 could do with being longer.

I’ve been using the fluval 6 series for years. It was time for some routine maintenance on my 306 so I decided to just upgrade to the 307. In very glad I did. Not sure of the exact specs go as far as the motor, if the 7 series is stronger or not but I fed feel that it is. I had my fluval 306 sitting empty for almost 9 months and when I started it back up for my new Mbuna tank I just felt it was never the same. Def needed a new impeller and possibly whole new head assembly so I just decided to jump into the 7 series. Noise level is almost nonexistent. Very powerful flow. The priming pump is prob the single best advancement. New media basket design allows all three media trays to be removed at once instead if individually which is a huge improvement for cleaning. For sure the fluval series of canisters are overpriced, no denying that. But if you’re a decades long hobbyist like myself then you’ve run into your share of disasters or near disasters using inferior made products. For instance the sun sun. My buddy refuses to pay the price for fluval and he recently came home to about 30 gallons of water on his hardwood floors due to the sun sun seals failing. I don’t have that worry with a fluval. While there are cheaper and proven reliable substitutes for the fluval series, I’ll stick with what I know. A canister that has never let me down, has proven its worth, and is solidly built. Good products aren’t cheap in this hobby, and cheap products are usually garbage. 7 series has my vote of confidence

Only had the 307 on the tank for 3 days but early impressions are that it's very good. I bought it to replace a Juwel Bioflow internal filter on a Juwel 125L tank. It's not totally silent by any means, more a soft hum. The media trays are smaller than I imagined and I've got 1Kg of Biohome Ultimate in the top tray with a few sticks spilling over to the 2nd tray down which is topped off with 2 bags of Biohome Biogravel from the internal filter for seeding.Of course it also has the 2 white bio foams in the removable red tray for more capacity and the black bio foam in the bottom tray. The blue foam is used purely as mechanical filtration and is somewhere between coarse/medium density.Priming was simple as long as you keep the outlet above the water level.I've got it on full flow in my 125L using the supplied duckbill outlet and have got a gentle sway on all of the plants so would say it's ideal for this size tank, if the tank was bigger I'd certainly plump for the 407 and would maybe even go for the 407 for my size tank. The flow can be regulated by moving the flow lever down to no more than half way (a 45 degree angle).Looks like it should be very easy to clean and I won't have to clean it twice a week as I did with the internal.Edit: after using it a little while I've had to knock a star off (I was thinking of knocking off 2) as it does seem to suffer from bypass too easily. I've put a piece of floss around the top cover to try and block it. Hopefully that'll work better.

Purchased to replace internal filter in a125L freshwater aquarium. I last had an external canister filter over 20 years ago, which was also a Fluval. I have to say there have been some big design updates. Installation beneath my tank in the cabinet was relatively easy. The only problem I had was that I fitted the gasket incorrectly which resulted in some water leaking onto the floor, however this was quickly remedied when I realised the mistake. The filter media included was ok. I replaced the ceramic bio rings with sintered glass ones for better biological load, but nothing else. I also used some of the media from the old filter to seed the new one.Cleaning is easy. Just disconnect the hose assembly, remove the canister and rinse everything in water that you've taken from the tank. It could not be simpler. There have been comments about the length of hose supplied. Personally I didn't have any problems. Water quality is excellent and the filter is doing a great job. I bought some silicone grease and use it to grease the gasket every 4 weeks and ensure a good seal.Fluval recommend you replace the bio rings every six months, I don't see the need for this myself. All in all, very happy with the filter in terms of quiet running and overall performance. One minor issue for me was the hose retaining clips were too bulky for my tank hood to close fully but got around this with judicious use of some cable ties. Recommend purchasing a spray bar for best surface agitation.

I will start by saying we have only had this for a few days as of this writing but I can tell you it is the best, quietest, easy to use, and put together filter I have ever seen. You can have it up and running in 10 minutes. The only thing to make sure you do correctly (which I did not initially) is put the silicone O-ring on properly. When you get the filter and the other bits, take the lid of the filter off, grab the o-ring, wet it, then put it along the rim. Not in the rim. There is a rigged groove where the filter base sits inside of and I thought that was where the o-ring went and when I put it there and clamped the lid on it was very snug but the top was not seated all the way down but it was as far down as possible so I assumed it was okay. After priming the filter (which is as easy as connecting the hoses that I measured and cut and set up in the tank and pumping the lever three times. I plugged it in and water started spraying out so I quickly unplugged, cleaned up the water and re-read the instructions and discovered I put the o-ring in the wrong spot. There is a smooth groove on the filter the o-ring fits into a lot easier and I did that, hooked it back up and she has been purring like a dream ever since. No noise, no water leakage, easy set up, easy to take out to clean. Very slim design so it fits easily into aquarium stands. I highly recommend this filter. I am blown away at how silent it is and how easy it was to put together.

My original JBL canister filter failed after about 10-years solid work (no complaints there!). Poor thing could barely shift any water at all, and was making a phew funny noises. I replaced it with an Aquamanta filter (Maidenhead Aquatics own brand I believe) and while it could filter with the best of them, at 3am it sounded like someone revving a Harley in the sitting room while I was trying to get some shut eye. So, that went back.Having looked at a few online reviews, I decided to for this one instead. I am delighted!Good points: Variable flow rate, lots of media space, drip-free canister cleaning, lots of hose, quiet, compact, rubber feet.OK points: The rubber feet dampened most of the (small amount of)vibration from the unit, but it still benefited from stickig some foam underneath.Bad points: The Fluval hoses are OK, but I needed to replace some of them to allow me to collect my inline heater and CO2 diffuser, which was fine, but I needed to clamp the replacement hoses which I didn't have to do with any of my non-Fluval canisters. It would be better if it accepted standard PVC hose. None of this would have been an issue if I just went straight from tank to filter to tank. All in all it's a nice bit of kit and does the job well, and I can sleep a bit better now the Harley has been replaced with a softly purring cat.

The unit is sturdy, quieter than the unit it superseded, straightforward to service - and provided you use a supplementary air pump and stone to aerate the water rather than rely on the outlet mouth from the Fluval driving in the air by discharging partially in and partially out of the water, the whole experience is quiet.I have installed my unit in a service corridor behind the aquarium with hoses running through holes in the 4" stud wall. This additional distance meant that it was critical to cut the loop of hose in just the right place to reach the intake and out spout. I played safe and got an additional length of hose. It is no longer than it comfortably needs to be,and the pump has more than sufficient oomph. The clamps provided allow for the hose to loop over the rear edge of the tank. However, the tank I have has holes in the flange at the back to take such hoses. The clamps provided are not suitable for this route - but home-made wedges (from wooden clothes pegs) secure the hose through the hole without it chaffing, and the inner halves of the clamps provided take over to set the 90° bend required for the inlet draw pipe. One star is knocked off for the stingy length of hose and the lack of provision of clamps suited for rear entry through holes, both issues of which were overcome relatively easily.
