Ok so I recently had two problems one the filters that came with my rank were hopeless so I had to upgrade to a Fluval 406 which is great by the way. I tried to use as much of the older filter media as possible but fully expected a mini cycle and an ammonia spike due to the change. For the last week I had also been plagued by slightly cloudy water more noticeable when viewing the tank lengthways but still annoying ! So in went the Fluval about three days later in that went the Purigen. Readings taken before the Purigen showed a slight ammonia spike at .25 and nitrites also high and nitrates at about 40 so basically not good! 24 hours after the Purigen went in these were at 0!The other thing as you will see is it has visibly cleared the slight cloudiness after 48 hours this is almost completely crystal clear even when the tank is viewed length way so it works! Apart from this it has also done something which I don't really know how to describe but everything just looks more vibrant it's like I went from standard definition to HD. I think cost wise it's reasonable. Especially when compared to say Chemi Pure which to treat my tank would cost close to 40 pounds with one pouch if Purigen is actually more than enough for my 300 litre tank. I am still running normal carbon as this extends the life of the Purigen and also Purigen fits easily into my Fluval 406.Now for the caution bit. I was actually considering taking one star off for this because I don't think Seachem make this clear enough unless you do your own research which I did but many don't ! Once finding numerous threads on the internet about two serious issues I wrote to Seachem who have clarified and confirmed so this is straight from Seachem.Issue no 1 . Many water conditioners that are used today in water changes contain a slime coat element which contains amines. This could render the Purigen useless. To be on the safe side you need to use a water conditioner which does not have this ingredient like Seachem Prime, or remove the Purigen from the filter during water changes for about 24 to 48 hours. To be clear using a water conditioner that contains amines won't create any toxicity but will reduce the effectiveness of it and also saturate it so it is not capable of being recharged.Issue number 2. If you use a water conditioner containing amines which many do, then if you use this to regenerate your Purigen it will make it toxic and kill your fish. It is hard to know whether or not a water conditioner contains amines one that is safe is Seachem Prime. Amines are not necessarily listed on the ingredients as there are variations of this chemical. I know that the Fluval and Tetra water conditioners are both not safe to regenerate Purigen. What happens if you try to regenerate your Purigen with one of these water conditioners is a chemical reaction which will trigger highly toxic chloramine in your tank. As I do not intend to reuse or regenerate my Pugin this is not a problem for me but I have switched to using a different water conditioner just to be on the safe side. I really do think that Seachem should make this clear to people purchasing this product as the consequences could be catastrophic.I will continue to use this product as it seems to really help with water clarity and chemistry but I will be purchasing a new bag when this one runs out. I suggest if you do want to use this product switch to Seachems water conditions also either Prime or Safe to get the most out of it.

Purigen. Wow. What can I say?I have a collection of tanks ranging from 30l to 600l and this carbon is phenomenal.I was apprehensive at first having read mixed reviews but that goes with any product I suppose. But this stuff is amazing.I Will stress that you will need an incredibly fine mesh bag to put it in as the consistency is like that of sand, I myself used ladies tights ( in sock form) and it works well.Within 2 days after a complete water and media change, the water is crystal clear. In my 60l planted tank I have 3 lumps of rosewood that leeched tannins into the water even after a 3 week pre tank cycle but once I placed the Purigen in the filter box, it was clear within hours. The quality of the water is impeccable.I do testing every 3 days on all tanks and other then the initial spike after water changes, there is no change to all the usual culprits; ammonia, nitrite ect. All at zero. The fish are healthy and flourishing as are the plants.I will point out, you need to use Seachem prime with Purigen. These two products are designed to work together and other water cleansers will void the Purigen working efficiently. There is a fascinating review on Amazon explaining all this.It helps with good clean tanks to start with. If your a little lazy in your fish keeping then I suggest a thorough clean and media change before using this. After that, it is plane sailing. For your information, I do 25-30% water changes every 2 weeks with a full media clean every 5-6 weeks, cycling replenished media every 6 months. This product will not let you down but be wary about using to much. 30ml of Purigen is enough in my 130l tropical for 6 months use and after that it only needs replenishing, not throwing away!I hope you find this of use!

And I thought I've crystal clear water as I'm running 2 filters on my overstocked fish tank, a canister and hob filter, both having filter floss. After using this, i was shocked to see how clear the water is. I can see the colours of the fishes and significant reduction in algae. I can't verify whether this has improved the water quality as I don't test my water and rely mostly in observing the fishes and plants, although the significant reduction in algae is a good sign that water has improved. After a month, it turned dark brown from white. It took around 3 days to recharge/clean it and bring it back to it's near original white colour. Initially used thin bleach mixed with water,1:1 ratio but this did not clean it, so I've used thick bleach on day 2 and 3, same ratio, and this did the job. I don't recommend using thick bleach as it takes ages to wash off. I've to dechlorinate this for 2 days to be sure and so far, all fish ok after putting it back again. I probably will use pure thin bleach next time it needs recharging.Overall, happy with this and will buy another one so that there will always be one on my filter while the other is being recharged.

Bought beginning of the year and split it so I could have one bag in and one bag out, because regeneration takes ~48hrs. I followed the regeneration instructions to what is written on the packaging. HOWEVER, it says nothing about storing in-between uses and that the Purigen media SHOULD NOT be allowed to dry out, hence why this is not a 5 star review (the product itself is amazing and works). Both lots have only been regenerated once and the Purigen is disintegrating and falling through media bags. There is reviews on the forums where people have had issues and they were told the product when not in use must be left moist/in water by Seachem administrators. This vital information is completely absent from the packaging and their website (it's only listed somewhere on Q&As).I wasted £18, that I will have to spend again because I can't risk it dispersing round my external filter or sandy substrate. I have emailed Seachem directly because this is a product/instructional fault and not the seller's.

It did, what it states on description. Unparalleled clear water. My fishes are happy, so I'm also happy with this purchase. It's an excellent product, just a small amount I added to my Fulval 360 external filter, next half an hour I have seen the changes of Crystal clear water. I need to mention here that activated carbon in my filter is out of charge, so my aquarium changed to yellowish. I didn't change carbon, but added this, it does the job. Anyhow carbon is on the way.Its does't have media bag, we need to buy them. Buy the media bag from Seachem, don't buy from other cheap media bag because this purigen is very small in size, so media bag from others have large hole comparing to this Purigen size.In my opinion buy two 100g of Seachem Purigen which has media bag, So you get 2 media bag as well. or else you can by seachem media bag called " The Bag" but bit expensive.

Wow! This stuff is AMAZING! my water doesn't even look like water anymore, the only way i can tell there's water in the tank is from m the ripples at the top from the spray bar. Never seen anything like it. Parameters are always spot on too. I use 250ml at a time in my 350ltr tank which lasts around 4 months, you can recharge this stuff too but i dont think its worth the the hassleOnly issue is the purigen is so fine that i cant find any media bag that'll hold it without it leaking into the tank, it seems the only option is to buy seachems own specialised purigen bag, a solid bag but an absolute ripoff in my opinion (nearly 20 quid for a media bag WTF! )aside from that its great would definitely recommend!Tip: if you have 2 external filters use this alongside chemipure elite. It'll have your fish looking like they're floating on air!

Pristine water. I have now got rid of all carbon as this is by far more effective. Yes it's expensive but think that as you can regenerate it then the cost will soon be justified as you can get rid of your carbon filters and do away with the constant purchases. I have had many aquariums over the years but the clarity of the water with this is in my opinion, unparalleled. If you are dead set on using carbon then you can still use this in the filter if you can fit it in and then the Purigen lasts maybe a month longer before regenerating. I have 4 bags so that when I change one I always have a clean one ready to use and as I have 2 aquariums then I needed 4 bags.I normally regenerate every 3 months but as it changes colour as it gets dirtier then you always know when it's ready to be cleaned.

Have been using for 1 month now, after getting a Nitrate Spike, the cause of which I never discovered. (No dead fish etc.) On a 180ltr freshwater tank with cannister filter and plenty of natural plants, I normally keep to 20-25mg/ltr by water changes. My tap water is 8-10mg/ltr, so getting any lower by dilution is difficult. Normal cannister substrate is Sechem Matrix, which is very good, and some activated Charcoal. The Nitrate spike shot up to maybe 50-60mg/ltr (difficult to tell by red colour), so tried 0.25ltr pack of Purigen in a separate bag. Tricky stuff to handle, bag mesh has to be very fine, but the result is brilliant. Now rock steady at 10mg/ltr for 5 weeks now.The re-generation process is a bit scary, but should last me 2-3 years according to the instructions.

Was a bit skeptical about this product. I bought a piece of driftwood from pets at home and boiled it before placing it in the tank to remove the tannins. Unfortunately, the tannins were making themselves known and I could barely see my fish after a couple of weeks, even with a 50% water change. This arrived very quickly, next day in fact, even when estimated delivery was 5 days. I have a cf mini filter and managed to squeeze the bag of purigen at the back. I probably should have used a smaller amount of purigen as it is a bit of a tight fit, but the flow is running normally. Happy to report, after one hour, the water is so much clearer and my fish can now see where they are.So for removing tannins from driftwood, I totally recommend.

This was my first purchase of this product and before doing so, I had read the reviews and found them helpful. The actual product looks like a sachet of micro beads and luckily for me, I was able to place it straight into one of the filter housings inside of the Fluval U2 power filter supplied with my 90 litre tank. This required me to remove the foam sponge and carbon pad from the internal container. So far it’s been running about 5 hours and already I can see an improvement. I should also mention that I also dosed the tank with Seachem Pristine, again my first time of using that. I look forwards to seeing how the tank looks tomorrow.I’ve just ordered a replacement which I’m happy to put awayin the cabinet until needed.

Used this to ‘polish’ the water after filter floss and weekly water changes failed and it certainly did the trick. I have low level nitrates levels in my tap water but have a planted aquarium so i’m not looking for zero nitrates. I’ve never had a nitrite problem. For those wanting to know how to recharge; I use Tesco’s everyday value thin bleach, 35p for 2litres. As it has lower concentrations of bleach, I use it undiluted for a soak overnight. It is unperfumed. Good rinse, then soak in water with lots of conditioner. Make sure I can’t smell any bleach before I pop it back in. No fish losses to date. The bleach turns it back to white. I do a recharge every couple of weeks, when it’s a light brown colour.Hope that helps!

This proved very effective at removing bogwood colouration - the tank was crystal clear after a couple of days. The company also have an excellent information department who quickly and clearly respond to questions. I bought a food filter (100 microns) which works well, but a gentleman commented that a stocking works so this might be a cheaper option. The product is expensive but I suppose that depends on how long it lasts. Whether or not you can recharge it is not clear from the comments; most are not positive and I am nervous about the possibility of introducing bleach into my tank (aren't we all?).So a good product but rather pricey. More comment on the recharging issue would be welcome.

This stuff is amazing. Was a bit skeptical as it says it polishes the water. We had some heavy water staining due to driftwood being in our fish tank. We are new to keeping fish so didn't know that it done this. Put a small bag of Purigen in the tank and even within a few hours of it being in there, the water was clearing. The next day, the tank was totally clear. Looked amazing, fish looked vibrant and water really did look sparkling and polished. We just plonked a bag of it near the water pump where water flows around it.Not sure about other details that the product claims as only got it due to stained water, but if you need to clean stained water, then I would certainly recommend this.

put it in to an overstocked tank ( cant afford a bigger one right now ) and the water became instantly clear with the ammonia dropping dramatically . no smells or discolouration's. I would recommend this to any one in a similar situation as me. However, I would not recommend this to any one else whom is purely looking for chemical filtration as carbon will do just as well to remove colourations and smells. This is because of the potential dangers of removing the ammonia and the knock on effect on the nitrogen cycle and may harm bacteria leading to a tank crash . This has apparently happened to other people online but not to me personally.

Before I bought this item I used to think my water was pretty clear. I put this in the tank, next day it was like there the fish were floating!I put a bag of this in my cabinet filter, and then just give it a quick rinse whenever I clean the filter which is around once a month. I regenerate it only once a year and it still working nicely after a year.I've heard reports that it can interfere with fertilizers, but I've not had this issue at all. Plants seem to be growing nicely still, so I can't really say it's caused any problems.Word of warning though, you will have to clean your glass more. It makes algae much more obvious.
