Purchased for use in a 100l saltwater setup, works extremely well. I purchased this over the similarly priced Tetra Tec Ex 800/1200 range as I'd read numerous reviews of them leaking. The Fluval 206 feels well built, instructions nice and clear, I had it setup in around 1 hour but my tank has a lid so I had to use a hacksaw to cut holes in the lid of my tank in order to fit the pipework in (and pipe holders which are fairly bulky), but all in all anyone with a little DIY experience can do this. If you have an open tank you could probably have this setup in as little as 15 mins.Pipework all feels very sturdy and I was pleased to find securing tighteners built into the filter lid to hold the pipes in (which otherwise would just be push fit),this greatly reduces the risk of the pipes working themselves loose and puts my mind at rest. The pipes themselves are fairly stiff and you'll have problems if you're expecting to be able to bend or shape them inside the tank. The length of the pipework is decent at 2.5m, I ended up having to cut a small amount off (as the pipes have to be fairly tight for the filter to work), although it would have been nice to see more pipework included to allow for mistakes such as cutting too short accidentally (perhaps 3m instead of 2.5m). The clips that hook over the back of the tank are fairly bulky, and as the pipework bends around inside them you could very easily end up cutting the pipework too short so be careful as they're slightly deceiving. I'd feed the pipework into the clips BEFORE cutting to make sure you end up with enough pipe. The adjustable flow on the filter has been great, I've been running mine on about 50% which provides a nice flow of water over corals using the spray bar (purchased separately).Noise wise, it's not as quiet as I expected it to be, there is a clear hum although this is not too loud, this is being used in a bedroom and I've found it acceptable, though I would have liked it to be quieter - many people say they quieten down after a few days so I'm hoping that'll be the case. You do occasionally get rattles and the odd loud noise for half an hour or so after turning it on but that's to be expected as air works through the system. The priming mechanism is very easy to use, 4 pushes up and down and I could hear the water rushing into the filter from my tank - job done. The stopping system on the pipework (also used to adjust the flow) works really well and even after disconnecting the filter there is no re-priming (you would only need to do this if you removed the pipework from your tank). How often you clean this depends entirely on your setup, I suspect due to the size it could happily run for a month or two without cleaning, but your fish will suffer. I'm running a saltwater marine setup so I'll be cleaning the sponge filter weekly. My biggest fear (probably irrational) was the filter flooding in the event of a power cut, however I'm pleased to report that if switching off the power (and leaving the flow valve open) nothing happens. When the power turns back on the filter simply starts pumping water around again as expected (no priming needed so these would start back up fine in a power cut with nobody around).Overall I'm really happy with the filter.I'm running it with the original sponges, Clearmax (purchased separately) and Carbon (I've removed the biomax as this is not ideal for my setup). I noticed an improvement in my water quality (looked clearer) within 6 hours. I'm also hoping that the filter will help with algae issues. My biggest gripe with this is why there is no spray bar included, I had to purchase one separately. The included nossel output I suspect would very easily create a whirlpool in most tanks - therefore I'd suggest a spraybar is a must else you'll end up having to run this on about 10% output which would greatly reduce its effectiveness.Overall I'm happy with the filter, it seems to run very well (apart from the slight humming noise) and most importantly I've seen no leaks or signs of water.

I rescued 2 razorback musk turtles back last July, I was given a small internal filter, tank, heater and a floating turtle island thing. I immediately purchased a fluval u2 internal filter as I have this range on my 2 tropical fish tanks. However, this filter too proved to be inadequate with the water clouding up pretty quickly and smelling so I was having to do a water change every week and the gunk coming off the filter pads was disgusting. After a lot of research I decided to get an internal filter in the hopes of a) cleaning the water up and b) reducing the need for weekly water changes. I cannot sing the praises for this filter enough, my tank is 90 x 30 x 40 cm and is crystal clear,I can actually see my 2 turtles now. I originally put the output pipe underwater but this led to a build up of proteins on the surface so I brought the outlet pipe out of the water so it churns the surface and this problem has also gone.Set up was really easy just follow the simple instructions set out in the booklet provided and you will be away.Maintenance is easy you simply unplug the unit, lift the grey aquastop valve which stops the water coming thruough the pipes, you then disconnect them by lifting the red valve which disconnects the hoses. You are then free to tip the water out and clean the media as you would any other filter. It all comes apart easily for more of a thorough clean of the internal parts such as the impeller etc.I would highly recommend this product for anyone with musk turtles or similar and I am considering getting one for my large main tropical tank.Edit: After having had this for 6 months I've cleaned it out a few times but the last time I had a lot of trouble getting it to restart, was so frustrating and in the end I put the unit back to together and turned it upside down which solved the problem. I would still recommend this product and hope that this was a one off problem but if anyone else is having similar issues try doing what I did.

I've been a fish keeper on and off for about 35 years and have owned two previous Fluval external filters. Both lasted me a very good amount of time and when I needed a new filter I decided to buy Fluval without too much thought. The filter I was replacing was a Fluval 105 which had sprung a leak from a clip that had been damaged.Having unboxed my new 206 there were a few disappointments. These are, the parts that go in the tank, (the intake pipe and strainer and the output nozzle) are clear plastic with white rubber connectors. These don't look good compared with the brown/grey parts that have traditionally come with Fluval filters. They also feel a bit cheaper quality. The canister itself also feels like it has been machined to a lower quality using thinner, cheaper plastics. On the plus side, the design of the lid is better and despite it being a larger capacity filter, it is still very quiet and once inside the cabinet and with the door closed you can't hear it at all. Throughput is more than I need for a 120L tank, but I can adjust the output down a little so the fish aren't living in a jacuzzi.Price is very good at £88. When I bought my last 105 about ten years ago the going price was £70. To pay only £18 more for the next size up is very good but I suppose that's been achieved with a little cost saving on the plastics. Hopefully the cost saving hasn't included the motor. It's really easy to put together and I had mine up and running, including transferring my media across from my old filter in about 15 minutes from initial unboxing. You do get new media but I wanted to transfer across my ceramic blocks and existing carbon. Obviously I had to use the custom fit sponges as the ones from my 105 would have been too small.Overall I am happy with the filter but once I've cleaned up my old intake pipe and output nozzle I am going to swap those back in.

On the recommendation of my local Aquatic stockist I purchased the Fluval 206 filter for my 160 litre tank. It's been running for three months now and it's been very good so far. Now that my biological cycle is complete and the tank is stocked I thought it time to leave a positive review. On unpacking the box the 206 is a bit of a challenge to set up as there are quite a few parts and there is a procedure to follow to get it up and running. Reading and following the instructions is a must, but if you do this then it'll soon be up and running. It comes with everything you need inside the box, and you'll have enough tubing to be able to place the filter inside a cupboard under the tank. The selling point of this filter for me is the cleaning of it,as it's very quick and easy to isolate the water supply and remove the unit from your tank set-up for disposal of the old water. It's simple to take apart and and clean the parts you need to maintain, and just as straight forward to put it back together and get the water flowing again. So far I've been able to maintain the filter with no spilled water, although it's worthwhile having a towel/cloth handy for any drips that may come from the hoses when you remove the filter.Filter media for Fluval are readily available and having seen how much crud that has come out of the filter/hoses during maintenance it's clear to me that it's doing its job very well. It soon got rid of the brown staining of the water when I placed a new large piece of bogwood. The water is now extremely clear and the fish/plant colours are vibrant. Very pleased with it and the fish seem happy.

Probably the best filter I have ever owned, I've been using the AA-590 up until this filter. The first few weeks it seemed extremely noisy until I kept playing around to find a way to properly maintain filter which wasn't so different to my old setup. My tips for this filter;- Purchase some Vaseline to lubricate the magnetic (black) part of the impeller **ONLY** - Do this monthly after a full clean of the impeller, housing and shaft. I don't recommend using Silicone Oil as it tends to put a nasty layer on the water surface.- Before fitting the lid back onto the canister lubricate the o-ring seal with Vaseline to make sure you're keeping an airtight seal.- Replace your activated carbon every 2 weeks to a month depending on the fish type and stocking levels, give it a swill before adding to your filter else you'll end up getting a very cloudy tank until it settles or the filter picks it up!Clean your mechanical filtration pads with the water out of your filter - don't use tapwater as the chlorine will kill off all the good bacteria you need in the filter to break down ammonia and nitrites. Alternatively, get a bucket of tap water and treat it with the water conditioner you use in your aquarium. With all this my filter makes next to no noise all you can hear is the water gushing in the filter. I'm extremely sensitive to noise and even I find this filter extremely quiet after using all what I stated above. My water stays crystal clear, my water tests are in spec and best of all it passes my own noise tests.I will defiantly buy Fluval again!

I was glad that the item arrived well before expected which was an added bonus. However I was not aware that the seller was shipping from Germany which was not stated anywhere in description. Since it was an European manufactured product with a 2 pin plug, I ended up having to buy a 3 pin plug adaptor in order to use it in the UK which did somewhat delay the set up process! This information is necessary for countries using different plugs to 2 pin, hence I could not give a higher rating for the item due to this disappointment. With regards to the actual filter, it has been running for several weeks and is definitely silent as I run the aquarium in my bedroom. Set up was fine, no hiccups.I think the reason why some reviewers noted difficulty in set up was probably because they did not follow each step properly, whereas I took time to read each section over to prevent problems! The only problem with leaking that I experienced first time was shutting off the valve to detach hosing from the filter unit for cleaning. Had I known that there would be back flow of water from the hosing I would have placed it in a bucket after releasing it. Aside from these minor issues, i find no other problems with the functionality of the product, ians I am rather impressed with the unit. Having tried hanging and internal filters, I do recommend an external one like this fluval filter as it is easier to remove the filter for cleaning purposes without causing much disturbance within the tank itself.

Brilliant filter. I purchased this for a slowly degrading cold water fish tank. Its very quite and one of the best filters you can get in my opinion.Years ago I used to have marine fish and I always used Fluval filters as they were the best on the market.Although they have had a lot of improvements, especially the primer the plastic quality has gone down hill like all the other plastic products these days and it does seem more flimsy than the older Fluval products. Although it seems to work very well.If you plan on using the Carbon in it, the bag that is included is quite small so I felt a bit had there but you can pickup a box of 3 large bags for about £8 on amazon. You may also need a spray bar if you have a small tank to distribute the flow of water.Oh and when setting it up,don't make the mistake I did. When fitting the sealing ring, you need to make sure it does NOT go around the grove on the edge which it does also fit it (so it goes in the way of the handles). Make sure you fit it on the inside of the motor!I remember making this mistake about 10 years ago when I had the old series, and oh yes I did it again. The water will shoot out at high speed and cover the entire floor... and if you do it in your tank you will have no fish water left!I am amazed they still let the ring be positioned in two places, why on earth don't they sort that!Good product

I bought this for my Juwel Rio 125 tank because the internal filtration system wasn't coping, my nitrate level was too high causing a bloom of green algae in the tank, despite water changes every 5 days. The Fluval external filter has solved my problem, nitrate levels down, algae is dieing back and water is crystal clear. It is a little fiddly to set up but worth the effort for the results it brings. If like me you own a Juwel tank you will need to make two cut outs on the edge of the cover flap nearest the back of the tank to allow the flap to close over the intake and outlet hoses. I did this using a 25mm wood drill and a jigsaw. There is a hole already in the flap with a plastic cover and I tried using that at first but the hoses would not sit right in the tank, plus if you do this you won't be able to remove the flap again for water changes. The other option of course is to do away with the rear flap and just have it covered with two. Once fitted and primed it seemed to take a while to start pumping properly, lots of whirring and clattering and bursts of bubbles but once all the air is out of the system it runs almost silently. Made me realise how inefficient the internal Juwel filtration was, I run both filters side by side and the water in my tank is as clear as it was when I first filled it.

This was purchased to replace my old 205 in my marine tank. This filter is simply the updated and improved version of the 205. The problems with perishing parts in the old 205 have been addressed with a change in the manufacture of the internal parts that are water bearing. The Aquastop system is really nice, you can switch the water off and work on the filter without any spill. However it would be really nice to have a way of stopping the water in the hose as well for complete removal. Switching from the 205 to the 206 was... wet.Operation is whisper quiet. The only thing I hear from my tank now is the soothing trickle of running water from the protein skimmer.I saw an immediate improvement in water quality and a die back of algae growth in the first few days, which suggests to me that this filter is working more efficiently than the 205, however don't neglect to change the carbon filter medium as it will become ineffective and eventually it will release all that it has absorbed back into the water.

I have had my 90L tank for 18 months now, and had nothing but issues, I must have killed 30 fish in that time.I had been using the Fluval pump that came with the tank, that sat in the water, but was advised to get rid of it, as it was garbage.Next I had an Ehiem Pump and filter, the 'Pros' choice apparently. nothing but issues with it, wouldn't prime properly, water everywhere, and when it did work it was rubbish, black hair algae everywhere.bought the Fluval 206 on recommendation, and god what a difference, takes two minutes to clean and prime, simple but effective little hand pump on top.both pipes come away from the main unit in one piece, with a 'shutoff' to prevent leaksquiet, but not silent,I have it in the daughters bedroom, with no issues.Flow rate is outstanding, and be adjusted from the pump top with ease, I have it on full.if your having issues and need a new pump, just pay the extra few quid and get this one.as for company etc, swift delivery and well packed.

Really pleased with my Fluval 206. I have since bought a Fluval Fresh F90 and luckily it came with a 206 as well. I hadn't expected it to be so big and inside it has a tremendous filtering capacity tanks to four vary large sponges which are easy to get out and rinse (in aquarium water of course!)It came with a bag of charcoal (100g?) which seems very little compared to size of media basket. Same goes for the ceramic filtration. Would of course be possible to add more.It comes with clear inlet and outlet tubes. I'm not sure of the point of this. If they were black they would be a far less algae friendly environment.Thankfully I didn't need to use them with F90 as it has built in black pipes. One other minor gripe: it does spill a bit of water when you remove the tubes to open it up despite the 'Aqua stop' valves. I think this would be difficult to improve though. If you have never had a canister before you might be surprised at how little maintenance it takes!

I've had so many fluval external filters in the past and none have impressed me more than this one, firstly the price is really good! I have two turtles in a large tank who are very messy! The other filters didn't seem to last long due to the amount of mess in the filter, tubes and the filters started to slow down and make awful noises even after cleaning them, also on other fluval filters the hand pump is very flimsy and I broke two of mine whilst pumping which means broken filter and water everywhere:/ this one however has a sturdier hand pump going up and down and also easier for your hand to grasp. I like the clear intake and output features in the water as I can see when there getting grubby and the output water flow is really fast which the turtles like! The inside media is so much sturdier than others. It also says no leakages and so far I've had none! Very very happy:):)

The filter itself is great easy to set up and when running is virtually silent .I purchased this as a secondary filter for my tank a Trigon 190 and I must say that the hose that comes with the filter which you are supposed to cut to size is ridiculously small in length and did not reach to filter from top of tank it also comes with 2 in-set pipes with clips on to keep hoses in place but as I have a 3-d background they are of no use also .Would also say the white rubber pipe joints look like something from the back of a washing machine black would be better and the water out- let pipe is clear so is algae prone .So what I thought to be a reasonable price filter turned out to be an expensive one as I had to pay an extra £50 for 2x hoses and two wider in-set pipes so I give the 4 stars for the filter but the pipe work and in-sets are useless.

i have been using two of these filters for a few years now, one each for two 3 foot long terrapin tanks half filled with water and they have both worked flawlessly at keeping the water clear (60 liters of water each tank) so i purchased another for my bigger fish tank (120 liters) and now with 3 of these fluval 206 filters i don't have to worry because they are so easy to set up and use and clean , spares are here on amazon for every part you may need but the 2 filters i have had for about 6 years now have not broke down or needed any spares so i am not worried about them not lasting long enough because they already have. powerful, very quiet, easy to clean, easy to set up and install, you will not regret buying one of these and when you see how good they are, like me, you will want some more, go on do it now.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

i bought this to replace my eheim ecco 2332 which has served me for a decade but it's getting tired and can't keep up with the amount of waste my terrapin's expelling.after reading reviews and watching videos on the fluval 206, i made the switch.setup has been extremely easy though a little bit more length in the piping would be welcomed, there was just about enough.i've been reading people have issues with the priming, but 4 quick pumps with the stick later, i could hear the water being sucked into the filter canister. the rate of water flow into and out of the filter is much bigger than my older filter which i'm extremely happy with. the hum of the filter is slightly louder but it's not unacceptable.all the attachments were easy to combine and install.so far so good.
