I played the original Elite in the 1980s as a kid, and loved it. I just loved the underlying concept of forging a career in deep space, and actually having to a) survive out there and b) run at a profit while doing so. So I was very excited when Elite Dangerous first came out, but also a bit apprehensive as I wasn't sure that it could live up to my (possibly rose-tinted) childhood recollections. But I have four kids, three of whom are now into gaming themselves, and I thought I'd take a punt on this as an alternative to FIFA, Mario Kart etc. Am really glad that I did, and can't believe that I waited so long.It is very, very close to being the original game with better graphics, but with many extra layers of gameplay added. The ship's systems are now pretty complicated but also very intuitive, I am six hours in and most of it is second nature. Also, starports have been massively upgraded, they're now a hub for missions and diplomacy as well as commerce.I won't go on at great length, as that is already covered elsewhere, but I wanted to say that as a 40-something wanting to capture the key bits of 1980s Elite, but with modern graphics and processor power (enabling the game to have more detail, and more texture behind the key elements), this game delivers everything that I hoped it would and more.It ought to come with a health warning, though: it is now so detailed that it will absorb as much time as you have to throw at it. The ability to scan various markets, plan a trade route in detail via multiple planets means that even a simple trading run can take a long time if you want really to invest in it. However, if you want to do a simple purchase, jump, sell via a bit of exploring that works well, too.In summary: if you liked the original Elite, this game is incredible. Immersive like nothing I have ever played (although Red Dead Redemption comes second with merit..!)Why are you still sitting here reading this? Buy Elite Dangerous: Legendary Edition!!!

Yes it takes time to learn but the basic controls are easy enough, I played the original on the C64 and that was a tough game, docking on this version is easy in comparison. And a docking computer is cheap if you want to let that do the work. Follow the tutorials on youtube if you want a quick start (make 1 million in first hour, and yes, it works). Then it's up to you to make it the game you want. Just when it seems a bit samey you'll see a new planet and realise that you can fly in for a closer look just for the fun of it, long term this game offers a lot and it's worth persevering with. It's all about the immersion, you'll find yourself kiting out your ship and paying attention to all the various systems and power demands, you'll visit tourist systems and spot the luxury Beluga cruising about and you can fly right up along it if you want, or buy one, or is frenetic laser battle your thing? This version on the Xbox appears rock solid, and includes bonus packs like Planetside missions and 'The Engineers' but you'll probably know about this game anyway. It's also educational in a way, the sheer distances involved and immensity of it all, usefully modelled using 3 stages of velocity, normal speed, super cruise, and light speed warp.See you out there, commander!

The Great Escape...So like most “grown up”s that play games. I have a rather large back catalogue of Digital games across multiple platforms; have gotten married and started a family.I find it harder and harder to find the time to sit down and play games or enthuse myself with my 25yr old hobby...and when I eventually have the time I fall asleep on the sofa. This game/simulation is wonderful; it let’s me escape/upgrade/explore at my own leisure (mostly in Solo mode) and gives me a sense of wonder in games again. Thank you Frontier. To people thinking of buying the game. Yes it’s good, yes it STARTS slowly (until you change ships and the excitement of doing so, which can be do within a few hours). You can go hunting/chasing/pirating if you wish or go trading/exploiting/mining...or like me, upgrade your ship just enough that you can fly out into the unknown and be the first to discover new sights and worlds (the game tells you if you’re the first)...assuming you make it back alive.

I've only had the game since Christmas and have already spent quite a few hours playing. Apart from a few little annoyances to do with target lock (maybe my problem) I absolutely love this. As a massive fan of the original I am pleased with the level of detail in the game, particularly with the Horizon DLC. As time goes by there maybe issues that arise but until then, I'll sit back and enjoy the majesty of it.Can't make comparisons to the PC version and don't know how long Microsoft will provide server support for it on consoles but I'll make use of them till they stop!!The game is rated 7+ but it is quite a complex and convoluted game but, for me,that is a pleasant change for a console game.It isn't perfect but it's as near as damn as you can get for this kind of game on a console....may even buy a gaming PC just for this!!!

I have played this on the PC since it was launched as well as in VR on the Occulus and, now, on Xbox One. The Xbox and PS4 "Legendary Edition" is the full game plus the entire raft of updates added in the "Horizons season" (e.g. planetary landings, multi-crew, engineers and aliens) and, as such, is the version that you should buy given the depth the update(s) added. The game runs beautifully on Xbox and is the equal of its PC equivalent (occupying the same subsisting and evolving universe across all platforms but without cross-play between platforms). There's a steep learning curve but the game repays the investment in time. If a Ludite in his 40s can master it, anyone can.The game is a constant work in progress but nothing released in the last 3 years comes close in my humble opinion.

Afrer playing Elite on the BBC Micro and all other versions i was initially dismissive and late to the party with Elite Dangerous. I was wrong this is awesome. A truly massive game in scope and size. There are times when it can feel a bit of a grind (travelling to the centre of the galaxy for example), but theae are optional activities. This is still my goto game ti play years later.

I played the original version of this back in the 80's.This new version, obviously, has far more content, better graphics, sound, missions etc. etc.It was nice to see that much of the elements and gameplay have survived the years.Have been playing it almost daily.Great game.

Amended review. Initially I gave this a one star because my initial experience was RUBBISH.It takes a ridiculously long time (10 hrs plus) to load.HOWEVER, once it actually runs it is both challenging and enjoyable.I have a feeling I shall be spending a lot of time on this.

If you love open-world, Sci-Fi games, this definitely one to own. The fact that it’s entirely online and updated regularly makes it even better. If you love games like Mass Effect, you’ll most likely love Elite Dangerous.

28.12.2018

Great value for money but hellishly difficult and away too complicated to enjoy unless you can spend hours and hours practising. Instructions are next to useless and the training missions are hard.

The only second hand copy I have found on line which my 16 year-old son put on his Christmas list. And it worked. so pleased with the service as I don’t want to buy brand new games.

Good delivery. The game itself is like nothing I played before takes some.getting used too but deffinatly worth it if u like flying around space with some surprising effects

7.2.2019

This game is hard. There is a steep learning curve with a very poor tutorial. If you’re willing to put the time and effort in it’s well worth it!

13.5.2019

Good value for money as it comes with all the dlc. A lot cheaper to buy this than straight from the Xbox market place

Persevere through learning the basics and this game will reward you with hours upon hours of entertainment.
