I'd wanted this game for YEARS - even before I got a Wii, and it doesn't disappoint. If you just fancy a fun, interactive game on the Wii, then it's great. But the real fun comes if you are a real racing fan. In that case, the whole process - from negotiating rides, through training and on to riding - is incredibly complex and requires more than a layman's knowledge of racing to achieve the best results (take it from a Champion Apprentice!).I was afraid that I'd get the hang of this quickly and then winning would be a formality, but that's far from the case. It's not just about picking the best horse and whipping it to run as fast as possible.Every horse has a whole raft of complex quirks and qualities which requires a lot of thought about how to train it and how to ride it, and in which races. You also have to consider the way your opponents prefer to run, in order to try to beat them. So although I've played this almost every day for three months, it still takes quite a bit of brain power to get the best out of each horse.Physically it's not demanding, especially in Normal mode. The Wii board is very sensitive and used to control direction and speed with great accuracy.Training your own horse is unexpectedly challenging. I advise that you practise LOTS on the Mock Workouts before risking blowing it on your real horse, as you only get a limited time to train your horse before it's unleashed on the track. The graphics on the Wii are not bad at all. The horses walk a bit funny but gallop well, with reasonable shadowing, and the motions made are realistic and satisfying. Choosing your own colours and breeding and naming your own horse are great additions. The onscreen displays are a bit confusing at first, and manual that comes with the game is really incomplete. There is an awful lot to learn during gameplay (for instance, how to correct your horse's Focus, which is with a brief upward flick of the whip, and the fact that you MUST change legs in the final furlongs to maintain momentum). This is not the only instance where something important is poorly explained, but the game is so addictive that you just learn by trial and error.Otherwise the game is a great combination of intuition and inside knowledge that makes it an absolute must for racing fans everywhere. I can see myself playing this one for a long long time to come, which makes it outstanding value for money.

This is quite simply the best game on the wii so far; if you have an interest in horseracing it will help you get into it even more. The only down side is that the game is based on US racing so everything is based in metres and different colour grades but aside from that it is really good. You can start a racing career beginning as an apprentice and then negotiate to race horses in different grades. The better you do the more likely the trainer is to offer you a regular ride on that horse. The controls are great but you really need to master them especially changing your horses lead leg after entering/exiting a turn otherwise you won't be able to steer your horse into the rail. What makes it really good is all the different tools the jockey uses to motivate the horse are there from showing the whip to a sharp reminder and driving the horse to the line. Also not all horses are the same and they have different characteristics just as in real life one might have a fast finish another fade out, one might excel on inclines another one have difficulty. As you build up wins you get racing points which will enable you to negotiate rides if you visit the stables and request to ride in a particular race. If it is a group race you will need more points and if you don't ride well you may be pulled off other rides but ride well even in maiden races and the trainer might offer the horse as a regular ride.As well as flat races you can also opt for jump races this is a little bit more difficult as you have to time the jump by raising the nunchuck and hit a green target that comes up. If you miss the green target then more than likely you will fall off the horse. If you are a shade out then the horse will lose speed. You also have the option of training a horse and improving it's ability to try and take the horse of the year prize. The game is the most demanding wii game on your body as you pump your arms as you drive to the line. Fantastic game.

I bought this game (second hand at a bargin price) and it is terrific. I love horse racing and horse riding and this game allows me to experience both in the comfort of my own home.Although, as some other reviewers have suggested, the controls seem tricky they are in fact relatively easy to master, certainly for basic race riding.I like the set up and the fact you can use with or without a balance board (I have tried both and the balance board is easier and more fun as you ride with your legs controlling the horse.I have not engaged any of the advanced features such as buying and training your own horse as I bought this for the racing. The interactive nature of the game (meeting other jockeys, the trainers, etc and engaging in conversation) does slow the action a bit but is a vital part of success in the game. The training features are very good at showing how to use the controls and to give guided practice before you test your skills in a race. The game lets you know when you have ridden to get the most out of your horse (particularly pleasing when a trainer compliments a good ride on an unfancied nag)- amd when you have ridden a horse and achieved less than it's potential (unhappy trainer).Being the jockey and negotiating for rides is good as performance drives your success in gaining rides and getting on better horses. Riding a horse above its potential gives race points which are used to gain access to better horses (but beware when negotiating if you request a ride (which costs points) and then are refused the ride by the trainer you lose the points). You can't go wrong buying second hand and getting cheap access to a great game (if you enjoy the horses!) - I would recommend this game to anyone(my seven year old enjoys the game - even if frustrated that he finds winning races hard - still a very young apprentice jockey).

This game is awesome its so addictive! If your a horse racing fanatic like me (Followed the sport for more than 20 years) then this is the sport game on wii for you! it takes a few go's at first to master the controls but once you do its easy and you don't need to have the balance board to play this game, because its based on american racing some of the terms they use are difficult to understand if you don't follow horse racing at all and its such a great workout you have to be thick skinned as well because your trainer will shout at you if you mess up on their horses, you can even choose to rear your own horse to race and that really tests your skills as a jockey.I really love this game and can't put it down not be off it since I got it!

I bought this based on the reviews given here. As a horse owner myself, and someone who doesn't really enjoy shoot-em up games, I thought it would be worth a try. So far I have really enjoyed it and can't wait to play it again. The controls are quite difficult and I just can't get the hang of 'riding abreast another horse' in the training (any tips?). I would say that the screens showing the horse's traits and also the panels when you are actually racing which show the stamina etc are quite complicated, but you really have to use strategy and technique which is quite challenging. Definately woth buying if you like horses or horse racing and want something a bit different.

My 5 year old son and I love horseracing, and this is by far the best horseracing game we have seen of any type. The controls, though detailed, are as intuitive as you would expect on the wii and the story mode is really engaging. As you progress through your apprenticeship, you get to create a horse, which is as near as most of us will ever get to breeding horses! We've played it a LOT and still have many intricacies to master.Excellent!

Love this game. There is so much to it. You can just play the racing or develop horses etc over a longer time. Plus you can create your own horse. Endless hours of fun. Not for the younger generation unless they are really into racing. I found using the balance board quite hard at first, and yes you do look quite ridiculous riding your horse on the balance board. Good fun for those watching.
