This game is just mindblowing. It's basically about soviet russians invading new york and you are a plumber turned freedom fighter who joins up with more people to fight back and reclaim your freedom. You start of so that you can only recruit one fighter to fight by your side but as you build up your charisma you can recruit more, twelve in total. You build up your charisma by completing various missions and healing injured people as you go along. You can set different orders to your men such as attack the enemy, defend postion or follow and protect you.As the game goes on it goes from autumn to winter and so on. Also as the seasons change so does the look of your character, his hair gets longer, his clothes get more ripped which in turn gets him to wear more clothes as you will notice. His clothes changing doesn't really make a difference but it's the small things that help round this game off, that make you feel apart of the action. Each misson involves you to really think of how you are going to do things. At the start of every level you emerge from the sewers (where your base is situated) to go about your misson. There are various manholes scatterd throughout the level which you have to open with your wrench (you are a plumber don't forget) which you can quicksave at, just to save you running back to the start of the level to save.Bear in mind that quicksaves don't stay on your memory card once you turn off,so be sure to complete a mission to save your game properly. Each map on which your missons are based consists (roughly) of about three buildings which must be won back from the russians. You cant always complete a mission straight through. You must sometimes do one part on one mission then go back and do something else on another mission. For example on the first map you have a police station and a post office to win back. On the police station level some officers are pinned down by snipers. Next to them is some C4 which you must take then go to the post office level and blow up some fuel reserves which in turn kills the snipers which in turn gives you the ability to complete the police station. All in all a brilliant game which requires your money and attention. Fantastic!

First i have to indicate that i haven't played the Full game yet , i have only played the Demo and have read many official and non official reviews for this game .The story is about the Alter story of our Recent History , the Russians have bombed their first Nuke Bomb on berlin at 1945 and won the war , and not only this but all Europe has become their Property , and now the US is the only country that is still not under the Control of the Communies .You play as Chris Stone , an ordinary guy who works as a plumber , one day he is fixing some Customer's shower and then the invasion begins , you are instantly trhown into the living hell of modern day Manhattan with only some Plumber's tools and you are required to make your own path ,after that you are trying to form the first cell of the resistance against the Russians , you wander through the city and try to recruit the ordinary citizens of the city to join your resistance group , but the task is hard at first , but as the game continues and with every mission you complete and with every operation you succeed you gain extra points of Charisma which helps you to recruit more and more fighters , in order to liberate the city from the Russians .The gameplay is extrelmly fluid and easy , the past complications of the same genre games (Advenature/Strategy)is something out of the past , with a very easy contolable movements , the game becomes very easy to control which is something very great for this kind of games , the only control problem here is the Inventory Control which is very hard and can make you exposed to the fire during the battles while you are trying to switch the weapon .Freedom Fighters is a very welcomed addition to the world of Gaming , and very very Addictive game which is impossible to put down

The basis for this game is a slight change in history. The cold war is still raging and Europe is now under the rule of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union invades the United States and chaos ensues. You play the part of Christopher Stone, a plumber who, along with his brother, got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time when the Soviets invaded. You break out and join an underground resistance movement against the Soviets by freeing the leader of the resistance from the Soviets and therefore become a key figure among the resistance. This game has excellent graphics and whilst it has a lot of gunplay, also requires you to think. You have to move back and forth between areas to achieve certain objectives to complete other areas, such as destroying a helipad in one area to get past a bridge in another area to stop reinforcements from getting to the helipad, and so forth. It sounds complicated, but once you start playing the game, you soon get the hang of it. The controls are fairly easy to master and the ability to command fellow freedom fighters adds a certain strategy element to the game. The game also has a nice amount of detail, such as the news desk reporting on riots in other cities and giving citizens details about new currency, etc. However, the game is not without its flaws. Some of the levels are quite difficult, requiring you to play them many times before you work out you're meant to go down a small side alley to avoid the majority of the Soviet army, whilst many are too short. The game overall is too short itself, leaving you wanting more once you've completed it.Apart from that, the game is most enjoyable and a lot of gamers will find themselves addicted to it. Definitely worth buying.

If you want to really get involved in a game this is the game for you. If you want to sneak around this is the game for you. Basically this is the game for everybody! The storyline to this game is that the russians won the cold war and now they are invading new york. You play as a plumber called chris stone. The main basis of the game is something called charisma points. If you have lots of charisma points then more people will join you on your mission to save the city. You can get charisma points by healing men or killing a load of russians or basically doing something inspirational. The AI of your fellow freedom fighters is excellent. There is no point where you think "oh god would you just do this you stupid prat" even if you dont order them to do something they always do the smartest move and say you give them an order to follow you and their in the middle of a fight sometimes they wait until they have killed the opponent and then follow you. The only downside to the game is the multiplayer game but even so the single player game will keep you busy for long enough. In fact more than long enough.

By far one of the best PS2 games EVER, I have played through this game several times over the years I owned it and still have not tired of it...I am not even sure why it is so addictive, it just is. The fact that there has never been a sequel is one of the most tragic things EVER. You play as Chris Stone, a New York plumber, who becomes a freedom fighter when New York is invaded by the USSR (Union of Socialite Soviet Republics). You must fight to take back the city, use tactics to weaken different neighbourhoods, blow bridges, down choppers, free POWS etc...Like I said, this game is just so fun that it never gets old and deserves a solid 5/5, between the shooting action, the tactics, the story...what it lacks in graphics (which are very dated) it makes up for in relatively easy controls and great gameplay. Issuing your squads of freedom fighters commands as you take back New York.Although this game has a violence factor there is no displays of blood or gore; making it a shooter game with less violence than most.

I'm very fussy when it comes to my PS2 games and freedom fighters (FF) is great. The playability is easy to pick up, with the usual double analogue action on movement and sight. The AI on the FF soldiers is good, they will try to duck and cover when attacking the team and general do have a brain.Graphic's wise the game holds up, the rain and explosion are realistic as is the RPG which comes striaght at you.Brain power must be applied in the game in that the different mission are inter-linked, so if you keep dying in one, that probably means that you have to complete another mission before continuing. Realistically, it is excellent in that you can't go off and be "gung-ho" trying to kill all the soldiers,as you will probably be shot to pieces. The muti-player option adds to the overall game and your pleasure when you destroy one of your mates at it.Top markers well done.

From the story line to the level detail, everything is superb. It's a fantastic single player game, with a bit of multiplayer thrown in as a side dish (unfortunately) but still fun for a while in a game of capture the flag. You get to control up to a squad of 12 soldiers!!!! but you need to do certain objectives to gain popularity and carisma to get extra people to follow you. Lots of on spot strategy for veteran players of this genre on the hard difficulty setting for ultra realism! or guns ablazin for those that like to be imortalised on easy mode. It's a fun addictive game that i've completed 4 times (once on every level difficulty setting), then elft for a few months, only to get a craving to play again. There is no other game that gives you this experience, i can;t wait for the second one!!! but get this first, for the story, for the game!!!

My how the tables are turning! Xbox has had many many decent games on there big thing like Halo etc... Now its our turn! As far as I know its not coming out on Xbox just pc and PS2 so at last we have a great great game (apart from GTA3 &4) to boast about! This games gonna be hot, it has lush graphics, rumors of first and third person view to suit everybodys fancy and great great gameplay. I watched a video clip and the action looks amazing, you can order people to go in and raid buildings and do your dirty work. This is handy for the people who are petrified of going into a building in case somebody shoots them from nowhere.I haven't played it yet so I dont know if its gonna live up to its name but the expectations of this game are high!

I truly believe that this is a uniquely good game. The plot I found generally quite interesting (almost a first), and what could be more fun than running round the shattered streets of New York (great level graphics), throwing petrol bombs, emptying full magazines of youre AK-47 at Soviet strongpoints, or charging along a battered street firing shot after shot of a revolver with 12 men charging by ones side screaming and firing at their discretion! Perhaps could have done with more levels, but is demanding, strangely addictive, and with an above average multiplayer, this is a very good game! If you fancy yourself as a would be street fighter in a kind of post-war, lawless environment, then this is for you!

I played this game religiously back in the day and loved it. Not only is it one of the most underrated games on the PS2 but probably one of the most underrated games of all time. The controls feel intuitive, the combat very tactical (sometimes you'll sit back for 5 minutes and plan how to launch an attack), your AI comrades (who can be given orders, ala Mass Effect 2) are surprisingly competent, the musical score is epic, and the maps rather large. A game that really deserved a sequel. No developer since has come close to creating such an exhilarating third-person squad-based shooter. Truly a masterpiece.

First of all, I have yet to play the full game but I have had the fortune to play a decent sized demo and fell in love almost immediately! This game puts a good twist on the old tried and tested 3rd person shoot 'em up, which works fantastically well. You play as a New York plumber leading a small army of civilians against the Soviet invaders, as far as I could gather. Whatever, this is great fun to play and I've heard the full code is better than the demo, which means it's one of the best games out there. Highly recommended. Buy now.

What a fantastic game! Have completed it on easy level and now replaying on mega-hard. The only problem on the easy level is that it is too easy, so you don't need tactics; you can just storm in and wipe them out. On mega-hard this will result in your certain death, so sneaky-beaky tactics are required, meaning you actually have to think about the game!Overall, a very enjoyable game - the only minus is that you will want it to carry on for many more hours gameplay - can't wait for Freedom Fighters II......

3.10.2003

Lke it says on the tin the game itself is damn good fun and challenging to those of us with 30 year old reflexes (damn those helicopters)realistic up to a point, the slow weapon reloading has killed me more than once when charging into a firefight and the fact I havent finished yet stops me commenting about the later stages of the game but so far worth every penny and prevented from getting 5 stars only by the irritating saving system which strips you of your squad members.

21.10.2003

dis is one of the best games i have eva played with only a few flaws and dey are : da fact of some of the levels being a little too easy but i have to say the harder levels took me hours. honestly fighting russians can it get any better. the recruit and command system is simple and easy to use although the ai is sometimes a bit weak. on top of all this the ending allows for a sequel to be released so i cart wait for that. any ps2 owner should buy this game it is amazing .

17.8.2007

..Of all time in fact!A 3rd person shooter, where you recruit and give orders to squad members. But it keeps it nice and simple. 3 orders: Scout/attack, Defend and follow. An amazing story line that wouldn't go a miss on the big screen. The music in the game really adds atmosphere. You wouldn't expect any less from Jesper Kyd.I cant do much more than reiterate points in previous reviews. But I loved it and still play it.Well worth considering!
