and being as there aren't that many of them likely to be one of the best and is going to take some beating.Being released in 2002 it needs to be patched to allow it to run on XP/Vista, otherwise it will be of no more use than a tea coaster. Other than this it is as fresh now as it must have been back then.In a welcome change from an FPS the game is a real time strategy using 3d graphics that can be zoomed in on and the camera angle changed. The graphics are colourful and the excellent cartoon cut scenes must have been drawn by professional artists. Sound is good, with a corny script for the voice actors that fantastically approximates 1980s American comics. Most of the environment can either be destroyed or used as weapons and leads to strategies either using powers on objects or the items themselves. The game can be very hard and key is learning the abilities of the heroes you have access to for each mission. The roster increases over time and there is the opportunity to improve the skills of each hero through experience points, some of them becoming very powerful. Changing strategy may be the only way to complete a level if a repeated one fails and some levels can seemingly only be completed with the aid of specific heroes and their powers.Prestige is also awarded for completing missions, but it is subtracted for destroying buildings, failing objectives and allowing innocents to be killed. These points can then be spent on hiring third party heroes or even creating your own bespoke hero.A golden oldie at a budget price and one, that if you persevere with the difficulty, is massive fun. And with a follow up game released in 2005 fighting the Nazi menace the fun doesn't have to end once this game is completed.

First of all, it is a great game. I've had this now for going on 2 years and the stylised, cartoonish graphics still stand up against today's titles. The gameplay is fun, and new characters and character evolution prevent it from getting repetitive. The polished sound effects and music finish off a polished and often hilariously game.So what's the warning? This game DOES NOT work with Windows XP Service Pack 3 at the present moment at which I write this review. A patch is in the works, and will hopefully be available by February 2005 (download will be at ([...] Until then, however if you are running Windows XP and are running SP3 or do not know whether you are, stear clear of this game until the patch arrives.Good game though.

A very fun real-time strategy game based on 1960s superhero comics. The story leads you in well, starting with just one character (Minuteman), and gradually introducing new characters along with their secret origins, as well as, of course, the option to create your own superhero/heroine. The story is very faithful to the old Stan Lee / Jack Kirby classics, and the whole thing is a lot of fun. Plus my daughter loves to watch me play, staring at the screen and reading about all the different heroes in the booklet.

An excellent game... and even though the sequel is on the horizon, still well worth picking up. As a bonus, the problem mentioned regarding XP Service Pack 2 (Service Pack 3 still being somewhere in the future of Windows) is now fixed with the 1.3 patch.I'm looking forward to getting this game back up and running in preparation for setting loose in the follow-up :)
