For any armchair general looking to command modern forces in either real time or turn based mode (for those who really like to plan their moves out) you couldn't ask for a better game than this. Other reviews have already said that the game was released as a heavy bugged game but these bugs have been addressed and the developers continue to support the title. Patched to Version 1.11 this is now a slick production. The graphics are good but perhaps not so impressive in the current market - that said you can view the entire battlefield like some omnipotent god or zoom right down to street level to see your infantry clearing out a building floor by floor. You can play as either the US or as the Syrians and both sides have their own strengths and weaknesses. If you play as the Americans don't expect the game to be a cake walk, the Syrians are a well equipped and disciplined force. My armoured column found this out to their peril when I ordered them to rush into a compound I was ordered to secure. The blackened hulls of my burnout out tanks quickly made me realise this was not going to be easy.In addition to land units (light, medium and heavy infantry, APC and MBTs) you also have access to air support and 'off table' artillery. Got a stubborn enemy refusing to be persuaded to leave their barracks? Rain down a heavy battery to convince them of the error of their ways!Battles can be as small or large as you wish and there is even a campaign mode. Forum support is good and additional missions are frequently published by fans. The game can be expanded with the Marines pack (that is purchased separately) and contains the USMC. We Brits finally get a look in and anew pack is due to be released shortly that will have your L85A2 armed soldiers fighting battles supported by Challengers. Check out Youtube for videos and prepare to drool! You can play in real time or turn based mode. Either mode can be used to fight against your friends and there is even a Play By Email mode. A random battle generator allows you to select anything from small squad based battles to commanding full scale major engagements. Day, night and weather effects also play their part. All the wargamers favourites are there too: morale, leadership, ammunition and resupply, fatigue, special weapons and equipment, detailed waypoint orders, command and control effects, experience, formation moves, fully rotatable and zoomable maps and destructible terrain. For £6.99 this game really is a steal. Although it seems to have slipped under the radar it is a worthy title for anyone's collection and I highly recommend it. Expect to lose your first few battles until you get to grips with the difficulty but once you figure it out it is highly rewarding.

Since it's release last year Battlefront has been plugging away at what initially was a rather too buggy and inaccessible (interfacewise) game, with a more than fair share of frustrations in the game mechanics (mind you, that is compared to the "almost flawless" first generation Combat Mission games). Shock Force never was a one shot effort, but rather a trailblazer for the entire second generation of Combat Mission games. From the outset it was planned to have several modules added to it and that meant that Battlefront never left it after the initial release, quite the opposite. Now that the new version 1.10 patch and the Marines module are out I think Battlefront has achieved the kind of quality they where aiming for initially, but just could not reach without working longer with the engine. The game now runs smooth technically, the visual and audial atmosphere has improved a lot and you the game itself has reached the point where your troops start behave in a predictable, natural, manner (that is, movement, suppression, morale, experience etc. works in a way that feels right). I no longer have any hesitation to, strongly, recommend this game for anyone interested in the subject matter and I can really see how this game engine will be able to blow the old Combat Mission games (all of which I still play regularly to this day) out of the water. Impressive work. Impressive dedication. Impressive detail. Tons of fun.

I played the Demo of this game and decided I had to get it. Found this older copy and thought what a steal for the price.Found that you need to down load the up dates to make the game playable on Windows 7 but once done the game is great. Just go to Battlefront.com and follow the instructions.I went on to buy the 3 expansions from Battlefront.com and haven't stopped playing.Really good detail and fog of war make a cool game.
