First thing i need to point out is that the learning curve is very verysteep, its going to be several hours before you know what all the commandsdo, even long to read the 100 page manual that comes with the game andyoull probably never work out the best way to take down tanks and othervehicals, but this is also where the game has its main strength, there arethousands of possibilities, and unlike many other games you really do needto know what your doing. For example if you set the computer opponent on'very hard' they will be able to beat you even if you have 3 times thenumber of troops, similarly if you play the game well you will be able todefeat your opponent even if they have a much stronger army. The manual actually says that 'this is not a video game'and i would beinclined to agree, it is more of a simulation. The gameplay is original(at least i have never played a game like it), basically time freezes, yougive your orders to your troops and press play, then you watch 60 secondsof real time combat take place, you can of course fast forward this if youare carrying out boring manovers (moveing your troops around). Thehistorical detail is immense, you get over 50 battles in which you cancontrol either side. There are 7 different nations (Germany, Russia, Finland, Hungary, Romania,Poland and Italy) each have their own different type of units (there areabout 600 different units overall to we are talking just under a 100 unitsfor each nation!)I disagree with some of the other reviews here, i think the game haspretty incredable graphics, there is a totally 3D camera which you controland you can zoom out far enough to see the whole mile square battleground, and the zoom in until you can see the individual faces of you'remen, during the fight scenes you can move the camera anywhere you want andview the battle from any angle, to me this is very impressive comparedwith the likes of C&C Generals. The only gripe i have about this game is how slow it is, a single battlecan go on for several days (thats me playing a couple of hours a day, notdays in the game), i dont really know why i find this annoying as you arealways doing something, but eventually i can sometimes lose interest withcertain battles and move on to a different battle. If you have played and enjoyed either of the other 2 games then i wouldhighly recommend this as its more of the same, if you havent played theother games, get it anyway, i assure you that you will be highlyentertained

Having only played the demo of the original game, I only had a cursory knowledge of the mechanics of the Combat Mission system. But the improvements which build upon the success the original are both subtle and wide-ranging. The team behind Combat Mission is clearly one that listens to feedback from its audience; this can be readily seen from the new commands that have been added to the interface, for instance. The nature of the gameplay has already been explained, but be warned - this is not a simple game to pick up. You really have to learn the tactics employed by the commanders back then in order to succeed, particularly when playing against human opponents over the internet (TCP/IP or Play-By-Email)or in hot-seat mode (two player take turns at the computer). Having said, there is much satisfaction to be had when your tactics work, and your troops take an important objective or obliterate the enemy, for instance. The graphics are very good, especially compared to other serious war games. You will get into engagements where the forces across an entire front will be blazing away at each other - it really gets very cinematic at times. The sight of hundreds of men supported by tanks and artillery moving forward under fire is awesome. One tip: use as much covering fire as you can - you can never have enough! Avoid crossing open ground - infantry get chewed up in a manner that makes you begin to appreciate the struggle for survival the average WW2 infantryman faced. The scope Combat Mission 2 is astounding. The war on the Eastern Front lasted 4 long years, and the number and type of units involved was dizzyingly expansive. The developers have done admirably in modelling these units and their weapons, and one can only wonder at the amount of research that had to be done to get the game to the standard it attains in terms of authenticity. The prequel, Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord, covered a fairly well known theatre that is familiar to most Western players. Contrastingly, Combat Mission 2 covers a much more hazy front (mainly due to post-WW2 Cold War secrecy). Playing this game definitely helps in getting an appreciation for the epic struggle that was the Eastern Front.

Combat Mission 2 is a turn-based, tactical wargame and follows the highly successful Combat Mission. Whilst the original Combat Mission dealt with the Western Front, 1944-1945, Combat Mission 2 deals with the Eastern Front (Germany against Russia) from 1941 to 1945.The gameplay is innovative by its use of what the developers, Battlefront.com, call their WEGO system. In conventional wargames, player A makes their move, then player B makes their move (known as I-GO-U-GO). Using WEGO, both players plot their moves and movement and combat are resolved simultaneously. This makes for much more realistic gameplay. The gameplay is the most immersive factor of the game, but the graphics are also worthy of comment.Tanks are beautifully rendered, you can watch the trees sway dependent on how strong the wind is, and buildings display different levels of damage, or catch fire and collapse.Wonderful touches, such as watching machine gun bullets throw up clumps of mud about the feet of your infantry, add to the thrills. You can experience the terror of sitting through the awesome spectacle of an artillery barrage, or cheer as you annihilate an enemy tank platoon that never even saw you coming.Where Combat Mission truly excels is in its depth. A month's gaming will barely scratch the surface. I am still playing the original game 18 months after I bought it - how's that for value for money? Depth is added by the ability to multiplay, via network link (for the broadband users) or play-by-email, allowing 56k sluggards like me to play anyone in the world!Another big plus point is the truly rabid fan base, who have contributed heavily to the development of this new game, and continually produce wonderful updates and improvements. Those looking for a first-person-shooter like Unreal Tournament, or who want hit points on their tanks, will be disappointed. Those looking for a rich, in-depth wargame which accurately simulates the Eastern Front should look no further - the future of wargaming is here, and it's called Combat Mission.

For me the best part of this game is the ability to design your own scenarios. Being able to recreate battles from the Osprey series and many other books available on WWII is great. It is relatively easy to design your own landscapes E.g. a wide river with a large bridge and ford. These can then be saved for a Quick Mission or as a more detailed Scenario. The game is worth buying for the detailed Table of Organization and Equipment (TOE)for the Soviet, Polish (late war), Hungarian (Axis then Allied), Romanian, Finnish and German forces involved alone. With a few clicks it is easy to set up a battle between elements of a Soviet Guards Armoured division and a German Luftwaffe unit (use as HermannGoring Fallshirm Panzer Division).Or you can set up a quick skirmish between a company sized unit of partisans and an Axis security unit supported by a few PSW 251 half-tracks.The TOEs change realistically depending on the month / year of the war and the sector: North, Central or South. When historically accurate Soviet forces have imported American and British tanks available. Both sides can use captured armoured vehicles E.g. SS T37 tanks and Soviet Stug III assault guns.Awaiting the delivery of a Katushka or Nebelwerfer rocket barrage is exilerating or terrifying depending on which end you are on.You can also set up air-to-ground attacks with a variety of fighter bomber or tank buster aircraft.Much better than the Sudden Strike / Command and Conquer type game as you can replay each move ; zoom in to get a close up of an individual soldier, artillery piece or armoured vehicle; use the camera to view the action and terrain from any angle. You can download several patches from the Internet to boost performance but the program works straight from the box without any major bugs.I can't get the hang of TCP/IP multiplayer though.

I love this game. I won`t go into detail as most everyone has. It is a turn based realistic WW2 strategy game for adults. The graphics are pretty basic, but good enough once you get fighting (You can get graphic and sound mods to enhance this). Almost everything is in the game from air attacks(offscreen) to ifferent artillery, spotting, running , tiredness, fleeing. You can use dozens of weapons, tanks. There are even rare German tanks that I didn`t expect to see like the Sturmmorser Tiger! All very realisticly depicted with armour penetrations, shot and all that calculated. I think the AI also plays very well too, though may need a bonus boost against experts.I got a m8 of mine to play this and the AI whoops his ass everytime, but he`s new to it and doesn`t quite understand how to utilise his armies properly yet. Of course you play lan where I beat him every time. heh, heh!I wish there was a fantasy AI dynamic campaign from 1941 to 1945+ with either side winning or losing for solo play. Also, would be nice if you could save the 1 minute realtime battle segements and watch it all in one go later- that would`ve been superlative!Recommended for all serious armchair experts who don`t need to finger twitch.

With a quick look Combat Mission 2 seems like a rather outdated war sim. And yes the graphics are not the selling point of the game but rather the immense tactical thinking needed. The learning curve is immense from deciding what formations to employ to deciding what terrain to use as cover. This game has thought of everything. It takes into consideration the weather, type of bullet, armour, type of gun, range to name a few when calculating a single bullets effectivness. With a few days of gameplay however you will find yourself ambushing tiger tanks, calling in artillery to support your infantry and and cursing when your planes attack your forces. This is no real time stratergy, the action lasts for a minute when you get a chance to alter your commands and so the flick fests of old are gone. This is a thinking persons game. If you like to fight wars with the muscle in your head you'll love this!!!

CM:BB is a more than worthy successor to the original 'Combat Mission : Beyond Overlord', this time dealing with the Eastern Front. The fact that the developers listened to gamer feedback is more than apparent in some of the new features in this version - Tired of opponents trotting out dozens of obscure vehicles that hardly ever saw actual service? Well, there's a rarity factor built into costings to deter that. The level of detail is excellent and some of the little touches are very atmospheric (when Soviet troops are ordered to make an 'Human Wave' attack... they all scream 'Urrah!' as they charge).Improvements have been made to practically every aspect of the game without destroying the look and feel of the original game engine. If you liked the original, you'll love this one.In summary : Buy this game.

Barbarossa to Berlin had a lot to live up to, as it's the sequel to Beyond Overlord - simply the best wargame I've played. Barbarossa to Berlin improves on it. If you want top rate graphics and fast action, you'll be disappointed. If you want a realistic wargame where you lead your troops to victory (or defeat!) then you won't be disappointed. The turn based preparations for each turn, followed by real-time rolling out of your plans, is a really addictive feature. The sound effects provide useful info as to what's going on, and the choices you get in viewing events - either panned out overview or close up in the combat - add to the fun.Summary - NOT a fast and furious RTS game, but the best strategic simulation of WW2 combat I've seen (and I've seen a few).

Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord was by far and away the best wargame I've played. I waited for Combat Mission 2 - Barbarossa to Berlin with baited breath...it's the only game I've ever advance ordered. When it arrived, it took a bit of fiddling to get it to work with my configuration (luckily, Battlefront's website helps loads with this sort of thing). The game itself is an improvement on the first. The same mechanics but an improved interface. If you're into state of the art graphics, you may be disappointed, but if you're into realistic historically accurate (and nailbitingly tense) wargaming, then this is a must. This game has revolutionised my view of computer gaming, both against AI and against mates via TCP or PBEM. If you're a wargamer, buy it now.
