Devolo Magic 2 WiFi Starter KitThis is mostly packaged in card with plastic round the two plugs. To start you need to download an app. There is no QR code on the box or instructions but it’s easy enough to find the "Home Network" app by Devolo. This has a 2 star rating from 30 ratings. Most of the poor ratings apply to the app itself and not the hardware.I found it a bit confusing when the Home Network app said it is not possible to set up home control devices so I downloaded the Home Control app which has a 1 star rating. I opened up the Home Control app and realised that it is for home control devices, not the WiFi extender. Ok that makes sense now but why they feel the need to give you such a message I don’t know. They could change it to have the option to set up a home control device and at that point to tell you to download the home control app.Anyway, proceeding with the Home Network app and I was told to scan barcode on box which then identified the correct product to set up.Next the app told me to plug in “WiFi” with not much more description than that, so it wasn't clear which plug it was referring to or where I should put it.Next I was told to plug in the Lan plug and cable to the router.Once both were plugged in, I pressed “Next” and they set themselves up.Finally I was asked to enter network name and password. All done. The app is a strange mixture of minimalism that is actually quite straight forward but without extra help text, it’s not as easy as it should be. Literally a short description saying something like: “Plug in the WiFi plug. This is the one that is placed where you want to improve the WiFi signal in your house and can be identified by…”Since it’s been set up I haven’t had any issue using it. In fact I’m sure my phone connects to Devolo upon arriving home and doesn’t use my router and I never noticed poor performance. I wasn’t able to AirPlay to a pair of speakers that were connected over WiFi to my router when my phone was connected to Devolo, but I could just connect my phone to Devolo to get better reception anyway.Negatives are that the plugs are pretty big and have fairly bright LEDs so not great in a bedroom. Also, devices will only connect to the first network in range whether that’s Devolo or your router. This issue is particular to power line solutions, with a mesh network your devices will automatically switch. The marketing for this does mention that you can set up a mesh but in my experience this is not happens by default and I’d rather keep the networks separate to avoid any confusion. My place is fairly small. I was careful not to connect the plugs to extension strips. I have heard reports of others having issues but this depends on the wiring of a house.Conclusion========- Set up is simple but the app could be more helpful- Mesh WiFi wasn’t set up by default.- Problems with AirPlay if source and speakers are on separate networks (this could be more of an issue with a Mesh network set up when you don’t know which device is connected to which router)- Seems pretty reliable and gives a strong signal

Upgraded from develo 1200 and they are literally twice as fast. Setting them up is more of a pain there is no longer a manual add facility using the code off the back of them you have to press the button on one then on the others. If you buy the WIFI ones TURN OFF YOUR MAIN WIFI, it conflicts with the MESH , the 1200's did exactly the same thing and it degrades the WIFI massively. Our conservatory which is a mega long cable run used to get 30MB and now gets 60-80MB which is plugged into our sky box films now download twice as fast.If you DONT use the wifi version anywhere IE are LAN only > the app doesn't work on IOS or Anroid > Only deverlop Cockpit desktop for PC or MAC> its been waiting fora firmware update from develo since September > appears it needs at least 1 wifi point for the management app to function on mobile device> seems they didn't expect anyone to not want there "crappy" wifi > and it is crappy.I initially bought the wifi version but the "mesh" wasn't very good, lots of signal loss , bad handover, no WIFI 6 / AX > so sent them back and bought the LAN version (which is brilliant) and then replaced my router with a Netgear RAX200 WIFI 6 router and hung another RAX200 Netgear WIFI 6 router (set in AP access point mode) off a LAN MAGIC 2 the other end of my house - Net result is rock solid Ethernet Everywhere I need it in the house and mad fast WIFI 6 AX covering the whole house. What I'd like to see for Magic 31- is a 1/2.5GB port on the ethernet LAN port and on the triple - as although the LAN triple can do 2400MB's it can only do 1GB per port > with routers / Access points now supporting 2.5GB this would save me having run a cat 7 cable in my house to the secondary Access point - which defeats the object that Magic 2 is supposed to avoid2 - On the WIFI version Wifi 6 / AX with ideally triple band and 6 or 12 streams and work on the "mesh" handover between wifi points and automation around channels3 - more speed you can never have enough speed :)4 - A less flakey cockpit 5.1.3 it crashes lots on windows 10 , 5.1.2 runs fine > no idea why or the differenceSummary is LAN MAGIC 2 ones are brilliant , WIFI ones are "OK". You'd probably be better of buying the 1200's if you just want wifi as I couldn't see any difference between magic and 1200's but if you want rock solid LAN performance then Magic 2 is the way to go use your existing wifi and hang a "matching Access point / AP or router in running in AP mode" off the other end and you'll get amazing matched mesh wifi (assuming your router and AP are decent)

review for devolo Magic 2 Wifi starter kit===========================================pro:Very fast, Integrated power socket, Mesh wifi, Two LAN ports on wifi unit, easier and convenient than wiring to bring internet/netrwork to the rest of the house, and good for bringing into rooms the wifi doesnt reach.cons:Very expensive! *NOT* backwards compatible (even with its older Devolo Powerline range)===========================================bottom line: Excellent Powerline adapters, but not backward compatible and expensive.===========================================I have been using a few different powerlines throughout the years. The powerline allows you to use the electrical wiring of your house like a network cable. This saves having to try and either route wires between rooms or help spread your wifi throughout your house. I finally settled on TPLink - they are very cheap and now have almost as fast speeds as the devolo. Whilst they were very good bang for buck, using the newer faster TP Link powerlines there was a few annoyances such as when they go down (once in a blue moon) sometimes its an annoying struggle getting them to pair again. The Devolo Magic 2 range uses the new GHz Powerline standard, promsing the faster speeds. Whilst I found the TPLinks to be very tolerant - I set up most of the TP links on power extension before moving them to its destination, I was surprised to see many warning notes on the Develo Magic 2. They surprisingly warn they cannot be used in conjunction with any other brand of Powerlines - including its own lower range of Powerlines without serious degredation. This is because the Devolo Magic 2 uses new technology and is not backward compatible with older Develo units.Setting up the two adapters was very easy. Plug the wifi one in, wait for this light to stay steady, then connect the other lan adapter to your router and plug that in too. Within a few minutes both units auto paired and connected to the internet(!) You could just use it like this, or you you can set up the mesh wifi which requires a seperate set up to get it going.Whilst not getting as much speed as with a direct ethernet connection, the units were blistering fast - much better than the 2000Mhz TPlink Powerline adapters I last used. Here comes the crunch though - you get a reliable solid Powerline experience, but at cost. A single add on devlo 2 powerline costs more than a pair of 2000Mbps TP Link Powerlines. So depending on how many you need, it could become very expensive.

Having been a user of Devolo’s 1200Mb/s units, I was keen to try these out. The units I have been using have been in service for about four years now and haven’t given me any problems.I have a strange setup at home. I have a den downstairs where my main computer is located along with a cable modem. The den is in a converted integral garage. The trouble here is that the walls are all 11” and the ceiling is double boarded. This isn’t a great environment for Wi-Fi. While most of the downstairs can get Wi-Fi coverage, upstairs is very poor.Due to a chronic illness I spend a lot of time in bed when things flare up. So, I have created a media room out of my bedroom. Smart TV, HDHomeRun,tablet PC and mobile phone. Over the years I have tried many Wi-Fi repeaters but with little success in getting a reliable signal. I’ve also tried a few other powerline products but because my bedroom is so far away from the den (and the cable modem), I was lucky to get 30-40Mb/s.The Devolo 1200 units delivered me a stable 240Mb/s. You must remember that the 1200Mb/s is a theoretical speed if all the conditions are perfect, but they rarely are. I guessed that these 2400 units weren’t going to deliver twice the speed and I even doubted if I’d see any noticeable change. To my surprise, I’m now getting a stable 379Mb/s which is over a 50% increase! The smart TV and the HDHomeRun unit are connected via the RJ-45 ethernet sockets leaving the Wi-Fi free for the tablet and phone. It all works a treat. The Wi-Fi has been set up with the same SSID as downstairs and means I can roam around the house without having to reconnect.Setting up is not all that hard. The included manual is a little sparse but if you go the Devolo website you can download more comprehensive information. They have a piece of software known as Cockpit which is available for free download and makes setting up a lot easier.Overall, this is a great solution to distributing your network around the house. It is expensive but it works so well. I’ve wasted a lot of money on many other so-called solutions, don’t do the same.6 Month UPDATEI moved the remote unit upstairs to a different mains socket and now I'm getting over 800Mb/s. It turns out that original mains socket was a spur while the new socket is on the ring main. It's well worth experimenting!

Really pleased with this so far. It's very low latency and has plenty of bandwidth to support both the WiFi and Ethernet traffic across the same backbone. My property has mostly old wiring, with a tiny bit of new wiring. I'm connecting between the far corners of the property on the same ring. It's not a huge distance but the wiring probably still has a reasonable way to go.I'm getting something like 600mbps in each direction between the LAN node and the WiFi node. Bearing in mind the fastest available consumer internet is 350mbps, and typically less than 70mbps. So that means plenty of room to spare. If you play games you're probably interested in the latency. From the computer plugged in by ethernet the far (WiFi)node, pinging directly to the (LAN) node sitting in front of the router, the average latency is 1-2ms.I've tried pinging with the network under load (200mbps traffic across the power line network) and saw no average increase in latency. The typical spike in ping during long running tests varied from time to time. Running 100 ping tests sequentially, often resulted in a max latency observed of around 4ms (still averaging 1ms), whilst other times there might have been some spikes in the region of 20ms max, but always maintaing an average of 2ms. So those spikes are very rare. This is really good, and for most people, perfect, and for a property with solid walls, blows the socks off of WiFi to the router which is almost impossible.Note, that to ensure the ping tests are reliable you should disable the power saving features on the units, otherwise the latency will fluctuate a lot if the network has no traffic. I also updated the firmware on both units.

Let's start with the negative points:1. The installation is a bit fiddly. There are actually only a small number of steps and the installation leaflet has got photos and clear instructions in several languages (I can only vouch for English and French instructions). However, depending on timings and how far apart the adapters are placed, things may not work first time. Piece of advice: it is very easy to move adapters after the system is set up, so place adapters in convenient locations to check on status lights or push buttons during the installation.2. The iPhone app is very minimal and has subtly different instructions than the leaflet in the box. I can't see much use for the app beyond simple diagnostics at the moment.Bear in mind this is at the time I am writing this: the app can be improved independently from the physical products.Once you go over the initial setup, this concept is very good: mesh wifi adapters need power and a dedicated network to synch-up between them. Using the powerline for both makes sense and removes the clutter of cables and power adapters.I assume data transfer measurements can be significantly different from one setup to the next. For me, the wifi signal is strong and provides maximum bandwidth to all corners of my house (that is: the same max download/upload values as when I connect my laptop directly into the broadband router with an Ethernet cable)The Ethernet ports on the adapters are a nice addition for devices that do not move, such as TVs, printers or speakers. On the topic of speakers, I have not encountered any problems with Sonos speakers.Overall very happy with this product.

I read and read the instruction over and over again, looking on google and try everything possible until the desperation to connect this Devolo Magic 2 Wi-Fi.I was so happy when I ordered and very excited. I have an apartment inside to a very big building and the main router is really far from me, so I had to instal another extra router close to my apartment, but the connection still no very good, so I thought to extend with this Devolo.I had a few issues trying to connect and instal (I am very bad with this technology I had to admit):The First and big main problem for me:I have just one main socket connection on my living room so, in the end, I had to plug the other one in the only other socket that I had on my room,I had tones of extension cables obviously around my house and you can't use any extension cable for this Devolo divider, so my question is how you are going to use in your garden or patio if you don't have any main socket on the garden and you can't use and extension cable, that is my case.In the end, I tried and tried and change the cables and the router from the original socket and I realized after all the effort I had another problem. The second problem for me:The lights still red and doesn't make any change. Them change in white and after no light. After plugin and unplug for too many hours and different ways, they became very hot, so I decided to wait for a friend that is Informatic and ask for help to instal.I really don't know with one is the problem and I assume I am doing something wrong and is the electric installation of my house. So when a professional install I will update the review.

Summary: Works as expected but poor instructions and severe heat generation hinder installation and probably lifespanHaving bought this after a lot of searching I can confirm that the work really well. In a room that got no wifi signal I get full strength and a good wifi speed reading. Having also used this to provide a wired network I can confirm that I saw similar speeds to the expected maximum of the product that our ISP provides (70mbs download). However I miss off a star due to the over simplification of the instructions to the point of not really knowing what to do next, acronyms are used without explanation and there is uncertainty as what the diagram means and the intended action is unclear.I did however get them setup to replicate the wifi even though the instructions seemed to conflict, I think you have to blindly follow them even though it is difficult to identify which device is the subject of the instruction (lan plug vs wifi plug). The final confirmation that I have is that they run extremely hot which in my experience indicates that they will have a short lifespan as I believe it damages the silicon eventually which causes product failure. They have a power saving mode that other reviews suggest being the cause of disconnection, I updated to the latest firmware and it seems pretty functionally stable but I doubt that these will work for more than a year or two due to how hot they get, i.e. it still runs hot not doing much, perhaps a future version of firmware and/or hardware will address these issues...

Used this to extend my home network to a Outside garage work room that is 14 metres away from my house and provide WiFi in the garden too.. I did not want to run an Ethernet cable, too much hassle, and would need a switch/hub installation in the garage. Now have WiFi in my garden all the way to the boundary 30m garden and Lan access from the office for 2 devices.Speeds are good - only sometimes 10 to 15% less than speeds in the house. Also worth mentioning- the power to my outside work room is via the main house consumer fuse box on a separate ring to the house wall power points and then through a 2nd fused consumer box in the garage. So both devolo units are as far away from each other as they possibly could be power line wise with a couple of "hops" at least in the path too, it is old wiring too.Only niggle on set up was I had to hold /press the reset button on the router side devolo adapter to get the white light flashing. This method is in the instructions trouble shooting section. You can change passwords; secure the access points; set power saving modes; schedule off time; and do everything you would need to via the app.I am really impressed with the speeds, 3 of us in the garden all on WiFi, either surfing, streaming and uploading, no noticeable problems and great connection.Web app is easy to use to if you know what you are doing.

First of all I have used Devolo 500 power line adapters for years I have been contemplating an upgrade we had 3. The main office has the triple ethernet one and I have one in the living room which allows me to connect my slingbox which i havent been able to use for years. I have one in my room and one in my brothers The connections show as 1.7G down to 700 but all in all they are working..Installation was not the same as my old Devolo 500s these adapters no show up on the network like other computers whih i wasnt expecting. this has settings for the device to rename using a webinterface. It has some vlan settings on but i dont really understand hat they do as the instructions dont really explainit from what ive read...Each plug you plug it in press the button then press the button on the main and the light goes solid white when its paired. I would recommend these to anyone who cant run ethernet through there house but needs a solid connection.. that is what these devices do. Easy setup plug and play I havnt tried to pair them with my old adapters yet.Do some research I chose these over other brands because I have had the old version of these for around 5-6 years. and they still work if i cant get them to pair up i will donate them to a friend.Best buy for ages

If you live in a modern home with multi-users of the internet, each home has some "dead spots" no matter how big or small your house is. Some older houses that are more old brick than just plasterboard suffer greatly with WiFI dropout, so sometimes "home-plugs" are the only choice. We have set ours up in our daughters bedroom, so she can connect her laptop / console and TV to the net without fear of signal dropout. You have three slots for network cables coming out of the receiving device, so plenty. They are clever items, as basically it sends the internet signal through your electric wiring from the base plug (you set up connected to your router via a network cable)to any home plug in your house then the signal is transmitted via your electric wring to the network cables to your devices. You can have as many of these plugs as your like, and they won't clutter your plug socket up either as they have an inbuilt socket, so you don't lose a plug as such.We have superfast fibre broadband (these plugs will handle up to 2400 mbps) and we noticed no real loss in speed from the bedroom to the WiFI / router downstairs, well the daughter hasn't screamed from her bedroom in days, so must've worked. Reminds me, I must feed her...

I have used a few different powerline plugs and they are generally really easy to setup, these however have been the easiest so far.The LAN plug has the router or modem plugged in and then the WiFi plug goes where you require a LAN wired connection, also the WiFi plug creates a new WiFi network connected to your network so you can use it to add WiFi range in your home.I literally plugged in one plug then the other and after 1 minute the lights turned white and it all just worked not even a button push or anything. You might want to take a photo of the WiFi key before you start as it's written on the back of the plug which you cant read once plugged in.There is an app you can download which also guides you through the step by step process but it was so easy,I'm not sure I needed it.There is a cat5 cable included with the pack and also the WiFi end has 2 LAN ports so you can connect 2 devices that may require a wired connection.Performed a speed test on the powerline wifi and got the same results as on my routers WiFi.Both plugs have a socket on them so you dont lose a socket by using them. The manual says on a dual socket dont use a multi plug on both but I have tested this and it still seems to work without issue.

This provides a quick and easy direct Wi-Fi connection, getting the best optimal speed you can get.The Wi-Fi, plugs come in a box, in a neat layout, easy to access. To install you, had to use the Wi-Fi plug and connect and Ethernet cable to it from the Wi-Fi box. Then you take the second plug and place it into the wall where you want the boosted Wi-Fi signal, connect your device (i.e. my Gaming PC) via a second Ethernet cable to the plug. This boosts your internet signal quite dramatically. I had a ping on Wi-Fi of 25mbps, once I had the plug in, I was getting a total of 13mbps, as well as it providing a smoother connection between my device and the WI-Fi, meaning there is less Wi-Fi droppage.I found I was not getting a time lag even when running multiple apps using the wi-fi. For example I had Spotify, Destiny 2 and Discord all running at the same time and found no issue with my connection.I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to boost their Wi-Fi and it makes a different when gaming.Downside, the technical manual was not very helpful, but the setting up was easy.

This is a review of the Powerline starter kit which does not have wi fi as part of the package. Some of the Devolo Magic models do have wifi too - they are more expensive. It is, therefore, important to ensure you make the right selection for your circumstances. The base station is, in my case plugged to the power socket and connected directly to my router by an ethernet cable. The receiving unit which has three output ethernet sockets is located in my study and connects my main computer and two other minor devices by ethernet cable.I seem to consistently get 50% of the external broadband speed on the receiving unit. As my normal Broadband speed is around 36MBps I find I am getting around 18MBps.Frankly that is perfectly acceptable for my day to day needs. Using mesh wifi to connect to the router takes my speed down to around 4MBps so this starter pack is a big improvement for me. It's not cheap but then Mesh wifi extenders are not cheap either. So all in all I think tis works really well and it good value for money.

The main reason you would get the Devolo Magic 1 Wi-Fi is to extend your existing WiFi range around the house. In this pack you get a LAN powerline adaptor and a WiFi plug unit.It is simple to setup. You connect the LAN powerline adaptor near your router connect the Ethernet cable from your router to the LAN powerline adaptor. Then place the WiFi plug within reasonable distance. Then press the pair button or they should pair automatically. That is it.The WiFi 1 has MESH WiFi as well, but you need to buy extra WiFi plug(https://www.amazon.co.uk/Devolo-Magic-Wi-Fi-Performance-Add/dp/B07H5SBLCT/ref=pd_bxgy_147_img_2/261-7623786-8577820?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07H5SBLCT&pd_rd_r=a05425aa-64dd-11e9-bc2a-af7dc3ab4573&pd_rd_w=t6Clt&pd_rd_wg=f11hA&pf_rd_p=07e3e597-b71b-4701-a3fd-d79c50f48406&pf_rd_r=321F9YKDBZZQ0A7S1TSJ&psc=1&refRID=321F9YKDBZZQ0A7S1TSJ)Overall, it is a good product, the signal strength is reliable and I like the MESH ability. It is a little pricier, but you do get a reliable product.
