This was purchased as a single WiFi adaptor add-on to my existing Devolo powerline adaptor network, a pair of dLan '200' AV Plus series non-WiFi ones with pass-through sockets incorporated (base adaptor connected to router via Ethernet, second one in another room via Ethernet to a Roku streaming device). This system has always worked well & reliably, but I needed to extend my WiFi signal to a room at the far end of the (long) house. I did think about WiFi extenders/repeaters but was a bit concerned that speed & signal strength might drop too much, especially since the extender has to pick up a reasonably strong signal from the router before relaying it on through a few walls before WiFi devices could connect to it in the far room.I had a powerline network anyway, so that seemed the sensible route to go down (though more expensive).Devolo says the old '200' series adaptors (but not earlier ones) are compatible with the 500/550 ones (but note that the 'Magic' series, its latest high speed 'mesh' powerline system, aren't compatible with any dLan adaptors, including the 200/500/550 series) & so it turned out to be. The 550 is supposed to be faster, & have a longer range, than the 500 (I haven't yet checked its speed) due to Devolo's incorporated 'Range+' technology, which makes use of the earth wire as well as positive & neutral.Because the far room of the house is in a part of the building which has a separate ring mains circuit, with its own fuse box & separate mains switch (in older buildings - more modern ones have integrated consumer units). Although both circuits are read by the same meter I was a bit concerned that the adaptors wouldn't speak with each other across both circuits, even though the two mains switches are always on. However, Devolo seemed pretty sure that there would be communication &, of course, there was. I seems that any continuity between ring mains circuits, even if it's just a common meter, is enough to ensure a unified powerline network (with Devolo units, anyway). The set up instructions which are supplied in the box are basic and not totally accurate, but pressing the encryption button on the adaptor connected to the router & then the 550 within two minutes will, after a 15-30 seconds, see both the network & WiFi lights turn white & continuously illuminated, even if they are flashing red or amber initially & showing no indication of changing colour. Any other adaptors on the network might also need to have their encryption buttons pressed to re-integrate them into the network, which is now completely encrypted & secure. Devices should now connect easily to the 550 once the password (which will have been taken a note of from the back of the adaptor before plugging in) has been entered into the new Devolo WiFi network field. The 550 is a single band device, broadcasting at 2.4 Ghz & its SSID will show as Devolo in the list of available WiFi networks. I found that after moving my phone away from the router until it went out of range & then into the room with the 550 plugged in it connected seamlessly to the remembered Devolo network with a full strength signal showing. There is no pass-through socket (though there is an Ethernet one so a wired device can be connected) so one wall power socket is effectively lost but it is compact enough not to block an adjacent one.Should you want to tweak the 550's settings then Devolo's own Cockpit software package is available to download free from its website & then each adaptor on the network & its connections will be represented diagrammatically & things like passwords, encryption, SSID (it can be made to replicate that of the base router), firmware updates & general monitoring of the network can be carried out. I haven't installed it yet on my PC but there are several good YouTube videos showing how it works once installed.Devolo is a German company & its UK customer service department is based in Germany but, though it can sometimes take a minute or two to get through, should you need their advice their agents are very friendly & helpful & speak good English.

I bought a dLan 500 to replace my dLan 200 which has been rendered useless by the failure of one of three adaptors, albeit just after 10 years use. Call me churlish but it's disappointing that you cannot just buy a single dLan 500 adaptor and use that in my existing dLan 200 system, but they are not compatable. So £150 later I have a new dLan 500 Starter Kit plus additional adaptors. The installation is claimed to be very straightforward, and the booklet that comes with it is certainly simple. I connected the Duo unit to my router and plugged it in, and successfully plugged in one adaptor and got it linked to the Duo. However when I tried to enter the password it refused to accept it however I typed it in.On closer inspection the system for which the password was being asked was not the one that was shown on the back of my Duo or adaptor unit. Silly me! So I rang Devolo support, telephone number by country in the back of the installation manual, and was talked through the issue....there didn't seem to be any surprise that this was an issue. I would have thought that matching passwords to relevant hardware was important and not too difficult. Well the workaround involved linking the adaptors to my router using the WPS button and I was sent a standard e mail from Devolo showing how it is done. It's a bit fiddly if you have five adaptors as I do, but we got there in the end, after two hours fiddling around.I like the Devolo kit, and it works well once set up, but proclaiming it is as easy to set up as they do is just nonsense. If anyone can get it to work straight away then you are fortunate, I can't see how this can be possible with mis matched hardware and passwords as I experienced. The workaround worked, but why not rectify the discrepancy between the passwords and hardware and then maybe the installation would be as simple as the somewhat Fairytale and idealised procedure in the instruction manual.Good kit, inadequate standard installation procedure.

I've had issues from WiFi coverage across my home for a while and finally got around to trying to do something about it. I bought this and an additional Devolo WiFi point which I assumed I could get to join the party!Instructions: The instructions seemed a little overly simplistic and I would like a little better / clearer terminology to distinguish between the "sender unit" which is wired to the Router and the remote powerline units. For some of the instructions I feel that this would have helped (me at least). The first stage of getting all of the remote units to talk to the Devolo 500 unit which is wired to the route just worked, which is to say it was entirely flawless and easy. This put me a little on edge, nothing is EVER that easy! At this point I had three WiFI signals / sources transmitting as Devolo"xyz". Astonishing, all three remote units doing their thing. To save having to remember and type in security codes that are individual to each unit you can then clone the security from your router by pushing the "House button" on each of the remote units and then (within 2 minutes) pushing the WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) button on the router. This is where It lost me for a minute or two...From this point I no longer had a Devolo sources, just (apparently) a signal from my router. I tried various things and was getting my "Right, it's all going back in the bleedin box" mojo working when I then tried one of the remote units in a room that I can never get a wifi signal in, result - full power wifi signal but showing as a signal from my Netgear router. What I hadn't anticipated was that in cloning the security from the router it also mimics the routers identity, hence all Devolo units were now transmitting as a "Netgear router" and accepting the password that the router expects.Brilliant, simple, well thought out and idiot proof (within reason....)

This kit is excellent and does just what you expect of it. As other users have found, the graphical setup instructions leave a little to be desired. I couldn't get the devices to work correctly at first so eventually I had to phone the helpline - and it was just that.... very helpful! A few tips for people trying to set these things up: Firstly, ensure you have the Cockpit software downloaded and running on your computer. Secondly, ensure that when you first set them up and configure them, you have them all in the same room - preferably with your computer. Despite the indications on the instructions, it doesn't matter if you use a multi-way adaptor for this. Thirdly, when pressing the 'house'button on the devices (for network security and encryption), ensure that you use only a very brief press - less than a second. When I followed these instructions given by the lady on the helpdesk, everything worked perfectly. All three devices showed up on the Cockpit software, together with their relevant download speeds. Once this is done, you can then move the slave devices to wherever you wish to use them - ensure that you don't press any of the buttons at this point. Pressing the wifi button will disable/enable the wifi. I don't get full fibre-optic speed on the slaves but I do get full wifi signal for my tablets/phones etc. The signal will still be less than at the router - depending on how far the wifi unit is from the router, but certainly no more dropped wifi signals. Also, a point to note - this might not happen to anyone else, but my units are showing incorrectly on the Cockpit software. My main unit indicated as Local Device and which shows up as a wifi (slave) and one of the wifi units shows up as the 'duo' unit (or main unit). I did query this with the helpdesk and was just told that it didn't matter.

Literally just moved into my new home. It's a long flat. Sky router is in the front room working fine, but signal was practically dead in the bedroom at the back of the property. I set-up the Devolo this morning – connected to the router in the front room, with the second adapter in the hallway (about midway through the property) – and it has been supplying a strong and steady wireless signal for the entire day.Set-up is dead easy. It's literally a case of plugging-in the adaptors and one LAN cable to the Sky router. After one minute of letting the two adapters boot-up, and then clicking two buttons, the wireless connection was up and running. After connecting to the 'Devolo'wireless signal with it's specific wifi password, my TV, iMac, PS4 an iPhone were all connected within a matter of minutes It literally took longer to get out of the box than it did to set-it up! (I won't be able to the physical ethernet connections that the adapters offer). The only gripe I have is with the instructions: they are pretty simple and could do with a little bit more explanation about how the the lights flash on the adapters will act during the set-up, but otherwise they are fine and easy to understand.I'm aware as I write this that there's been some people with dodgy connections and things dying out in a matter of months. Having only had this item up an running for about 18-hours, I can't comment on any issues... but should things change I'll be straight back here to update my review. There is of course a 3-year warranty to rely on, plus Amazon do usually provide customer service should things go wrong. In the meantime, if you're in need of a range extender then you should definitely check this out.

This Devolo powerline was a revelation and has solved my increasingly frustrating internet problems, but you might have to leave it to 'settle' for several hours before the two units talk to each other. Be patient and you will be amazed by where it can reach.Leaving aside the fact that because I live in the countryside I have an internet speed of c. 1.5 mps down my phone line and have to use a wireless network to obtain a usable broadband connection, my house is relatively old with thick walls. A week hasn't gone by without someone in the family having problems with the wifi connections at home and we have a plethora of extenders dotted around the house to try and solve this.Things came to a head when I started using a room in a barn close to the house as my office.Although I had tested the wifi connection before I converted the room, once I had moved in I couldn't get a usable wifi signal. To cut a long story short I bought a Devolo and I now have the equivalent of a wired internet connection in my office! The signal is passing through a separate fusebox in the barn to reach my office. The one thing you should be aware of is that it took several hours for the two Devolo units to mate and at first I thought it wouldn't work. I managed to get the two units to talk to each other in the house, but when I repositioned the wifi unit into my office nothing happened. I kept trying but with no success. I left the two units plugged in and went to bed and the following day found that the system was working. So be patient and this will solve your broadband problems. We now have them all over the house as well and i have no more complaints about the wifi.

Bought this to extend the wifi strongly throughout both floors of the house and also out to the garage, so having two adapters was perfect. Plugging the base unit in beside my broadband connection and connecting the broadband box to it via the network cable was very easy. I then used the install disc in my laptop to open the cockpit and add the two adapters that way, which was very straightforward. Didn't have to have the laptop hardwire connected to the base unit for this.Finding the wifi signals of each adapter was also easy, although it wasn't immediately clear to me that the password for each unit when then connecting to it was actually written on the plug and was the same as the adapter ID number. So write down these numbers before plugging them in. Wifi then worked immediately without having to do anything else, and at good speed.I wanted to use the second network port on the base unit to attach an external hard drive and access that on my ipad via the wifi adapters as well. This was more difficult, I am not highly technical and the instructions were pretty much useless for this bit. Did my own research and short version is that I simply needed to download a free file browsing app on the iPad, use it to connect/network to the hard drive which it did pick up through the wifi signal from the adapter, and it now works brilliantly. I've also worked out how to use the cockpit software to change the names of the adapter wifi signals to something more intuitive.Does exactly what I wanted, can now use internet and play movie/ music/ photo files from the hard drive anywhere in house or garden.

Useful piece of kit. But, the instruction booklet and manual you can download are at best confusing. Here's how I set up eventually. It relates to the starter kit.The guest account creates a new SSID and WPA2 password. It was not tried, but the SSID name generated by the Devolo Cockpit app can probably be changed to something more friendly in step 18.1. Plug larger device into power socket and connect to router with ethernet cable2. Note the wifi key on the back of the smaller device3. Plug smaller device into a mains socket nearby4. Wait until this device's green light stops flashing5. Press the bottom button that has a house like symbol (1 second only)6. Within 2 minutes, press the button the underside of the larger device (1 second only)7. Wait fro this device's green light to go steady8. Press the WPS button on the router and wait until the router's light(s) turn back to normal colour9. Install Devolo Cockpit app. This would not work on two Android phones I tried, but did work on an iPad10. Open the app11. Tap on My-dLAN12. Tap on dLAN 500 wifi (at top)13. Web User Interface14. The status overview should show the status of the devices15. WLAN Configuration (left)16. Guest Account17. Tick "Activate guest account"18. In the "key" field, enter a new password for guests19. Save20. Back21. Connect to the wifi in the normal way. The guest account will begin with "devolo-guest". Enter the password created above22. Move the smaller device to its final required destination - just wait for the light to glow steady.

I kitted my house out with Google Mesh wifi, and while it has been pretty good, it still has some issues - the key one being that some devices don't operate on the mesh band - my brand new Epson printer for example. And although mesh wifi is better than other wifi options, it still isn't as as good as the older powerline technology. I used to run a multi-room 85mbs, then 200mbs powerline network through the house, which were absolutely faultless. However, those were older versions which didn't have wifi, so I had to connect devices directly to them, or via connected network switches for multiple devices,or additional wifi access points - it just meant more devices and more wires than some in the house were comfortable with (!).This Devolo system has the advantage of powerline with built-in wifi, so you get all the advantages of powerline without the need for additional cables and access points or switches. The unit is easy to install and extend with additional sockets, should you need them. The base socket is also a pass-through plug, so you don't lose access to one of your power points. We have a 30mbs broadband connection, so even the original 85mbs powerline would have been fast enough for our needs and I would be lying if I said that the 550mbs is noticeably faster than other options. Speed is no longer the issue - it is having a reliable, consistent connection throughout the house, and I would argue that powerline is still better than mesh... especially if you have an Epson printer that doesn't work with mesh.

My car likes talking to the internet via WiFi for its Sat Nav but the garage is detached and gets a poor signal.I have just been trying a BT solution but it says the repeater gadget in the garage is only just in range. Thus this solution sending the data down the mains seemed like an ideal option.Setting it up in the house was easy but the WiFi has a ridiculously long wifi key, "XOFKMZJYQKFFZBLW" to be precise and I did not feel like trying to enter that.To fine tune the system a Windows app can be downloaded from the makers website called "devolo Cockpit" which detected the two units and then offered a firmware update. That's where it all went wrong.I have lost count of how many firmware updates I have done but this one went wrong and now the red LED comes on instantly on the smaller unit and stays on.Tried all options and advice from technical support who responded in under one hour.A normal purchase of course could just be sent back but that does not work for trial items so I guess a trip to the electrical goods recycling centre :(Reading other reviews of the WiFi module it looks like when they work they tend to fail after six months...EDIT: The makers offer a three year warranty and they are going to exchange the duff item and I will update on how well this one goes. Make sure you keep proof of purchase.Fingers crossed ?

Like so many purchasers of wifi extenders we exxperienced problems that made us question whether they were worth while, in fact there were many who said they were rubbish/ absolutely useless and they had discarded them. I did not believe that Devolo would produce a useless/rubbish product and sell so many and decided to soldier on until I found the solution. Requests for Help did not bring forth the constructive answer that I kept hoping for. I am not well versed in computers or the language used by the 'techies' but my determination to find the answer and solution did not err. Asking the right questions of a friend whom I believed would persevere until the problem was resolved worked. In simple terms we have one extender that is plugged via an ethernet cable into the router and another in a plug by the 'distant' computer. The computer was still linked with the box-router and its password and not with the Devolo and its password close to the computer. Once it was linked we have had perfection; the best signal in all locations and to all appliances. The computers and other appliances close to the router/box are linked to the router via its password. I would ask anyone who has difficulties to think things through, ask the right question of the right person, and get the solution.

This is pretty much straight out of the box and then you are up and running in about 5 minutes. The components are the Duo which looks like a power plug. Plug the Duo into the wall socket. That gets connected to your router by the supplied LAN patch cable.Next part is the Wifi plug. Take a clear photo of the back as it contains your WiFi key. Find your guest area or blackspot in the house and then plug the Wifi block in. Once it lights up there is a button to press which activates the secure connection. Then you need to get back to the Duo in less than two minutes and press a button on there. You now have a secure connection between the Duo and the Wifi plug. This means that the traffic through the mains line is encrypted between the Duo and the WiFi plug.Find the Devolo network on your phone, tablet or computer. Use the supplied key and you are connected. Of course your manual says all that but in very clear terms with one page pictures to match each instruction. You are now connected, that's it. There is an app and PC cockpit to allow you to monitor the network.Downside is that the Network name, Channel and Key are factory set and you cannot change them which would be ideal if you wanted this kit to extend your existing network.

Configuring these wonderful devices takes a few minutes, but then they just work. You copy the serial number down from the back of the plug and then plug them into a socket to boot up. While that's happening you "Add an adapter" to the Cockpit control panel by keying in its serial number. When found, the device is integrated into the network and that's all you have to do.The Cockpit software prompts you to upgrade the device firmware if needed, and then does it for you...You can also name each adapter to remind you which is which. And, once the firmware is upgraded, you can set up the WiFi to match your existing WiFi settings (SSID and password the same as your existing means seamless roaming). And you can set up guest access with a different SSID and password so visitors can access the internet but not your private files. And you can have the device copy the WiFi settings to all the other dLan wireless devices. And you can control multiple, separately secured dLan networks from one Cockpit. You can't have the wireless adapters broadcast on 5GHz and 2.4GHz at the same time, but this doesn't really matter (to me).I have 4 of these wireless access points now...and wireless in the house and garden is superb.

I had to upgrade to the latest firmware before I could persuade the adapters to talk to each other, but everything worked fine after that. They even connected to my old devolo dLAN 500 AV Wireless+ Add-On Powerline Adapter that I bought in 2013. Very pleased with that. From room to room I found it was easy to reach the claimed throughput of 500Mbps. However, if a couple of rooms separate the adaptors, the throughput was down to 400Mbps. Still pretty good and it makes me wonder why the Ethernet port is only 100Mbps.I got these adapters for an old barn conversion where the walls are solid stone a metre thick and WiFi really struggles. The wiring in that house is a bit old and I only got 50Mbps at the furthest points.More than enough for a few devices to use the Internet so still a good solution. I loved the fact that you can set the WiFi SID and password simultaneously on several devices via the configuration application. I found the PC version easier to use than the Android App.I think I prefer the adapter that includes a passthrough power socket. This one is more discrete but I found the loss of a useable power socket more annoying that I thought I would.

A great product from Devolo. Very easy to set up in you use WPS facility, and the ethernet over the mains capability is excellent (as with other Devolo products). My only niggle is the preset SSID when used as a single repeater, hence I have marked it down by one starThe WiFi "Move" system is something else. Basically it allows you to move around within the range of these extender units with seamless handover on the same SSID and password as the source. However, the range using this "Move" process is reduced a fair bit to prevent overlap. I'm unsure how it has been done at the price, but it beats just about every other similar system (with the exception of the much more costly Ubiquiti systems)Range? In practical terms, in normal repeater mode, the DLAN (mains) range is about 30M, the WLAN (wi-fi) through walls etc, around 20M. In "Move" mode (same SSID as original wifi) the range of the wifi reduces to around 10M, with the DLAN range unaltered.I have been using PLC ("Home Plug") systems for some time, I have gone through most makes before finding Devolo, who may not be the cheapest but so far haven't given me a single failure.
