CMR games have always been good, and having owned (and hugely enjoyed) the previous two games in the series that appeared on PS1, I was eagerly awaiting the third offering from Codemasters...and they didn't disappoint. This is easily the second best racing/driving game on the PS2, bettered only by Gran Turismo 3. And it's without a doubt the best Colin McRae game yet.The handling of the cars is sublime. The game is easily accessible, but scratch beneath the surface and you'll find hidden depths. You are given full analogue control of your car, from the steering to the accelerator, which coupled with the excellent handling makes the driving immensly satisfying.Another major aspect of the game for which Codemasters should be praised, is the game structure. Firstly, in championship mode you are driving as Colin McRae himself, and consists of you driving your Ford Focus for 3 seasons. The actual structure to this 3 year championship mode though has been cleverly thought out, and always keeps things interesting. Each (of the 3) seasons is made up of 6 countries/rallies, with 7 stages to each rally, making a total of 42 stages to a season. However, at the start of your 2nd year, the Australia rally is dropped in favour of the UK one. And in the 3rd year the USA rally makes way for the Greece one. What with the stages often being run in a different order each season as well, things are always kept interesting. The difficulty level is also spot-on. There's a good chance you'll win the first year of the championship on your first attempt, but then the difficulty level automatically goes up a notch, meaning you'll have to concentrate a lot harder in years 2 & 3. Another good thing that Codemasters have finally seen the sense to do, is scrap the rule from the first 2 games in which if you didn't finish in the top 6 in a particular rally, you couldn't continue and it was "game over". Now you simply don't score any points, or even register a DNF, but more importantly - you can continue with the championship. For the most part, the graphics are great. They may not be as flashy as in WRC2, but they are a lot more realistic, which brings me to another of the game's highlights. The tracks themselves are excellent, and very realistic. You really have to pay attention to the pace notes from your co-driver Nicky Grist (which were specially recorded for this game & specific to each stage). Each track isn't just one continuous road, as often you'll come to intersections, gates, and various other obstacles. Taking a wrong turn at a junction simply means you weren't paying attention to your co-driver!. One of my favourite rallies in the game (and also one of the hardest) is the UK one. Apart from the excellent weather effects (often depicting typical british weather...rain!) there's plenty of variety, from tarmac roads, woods - where a maze of trees makes it REALLY hard to see the next corner!, driving across fields, to speeding through villages. CMR3 may lack the stunning vistas found in the WRC games, but more than makes up for it with realism, more trackside scenery, excellent rain/snow effects, great damage effects, and superb car models which make the replays worth watching. There are a few criticisms, but these really are nit-picking an otherwise great game... there aren't that many game options to play around with, apart from the last stage of each rally (where you go head-to-head against another driver) there's a distinct lack of night stages, occasional slowdown in the replays (though never while you'll driving), and there's about half a dozen turns/corners where the pace notes come a little late - though out of thousands in the game you can forgive them for this! (and you'll soon remember where they are anyway).A great game then, and one of the best driving experiences to be had on the PS2. Not only have Codemasters maintained the high quality of the Colin McRae series, but they have taken it to a new level.

Being a self confessed driving game nut i was looking forward to this new driving experience. Too many hours devouring GT3 tarmac somewhat spoiled my first impressions of this game, but after a while the controls of the Focus WRC rally car become second nature as you slip and slide on dirt, gravel, snow, asphalt etc.For me the *feeling* of how the car behaves is a major point in any driving sim, CM3 is a good balance between realism and fun.Graphics are superb, the damage model clearly displaying many levels of abuse that your car recieves from your first hamfisted ventures through the stages. The replays are stunning, realistic plumes of dust chasing your car as you fight to stay on course in Australia for instance. So many little touches that elevate this game above others. My only real gripe would be the slowdown on some replays, tut tut!The sound is the best i've heard since Grand Turismo 3 and is another major plus. Hats off to those responsible! The Focus WRC and the 6R4 Metro sound is really convincing. I'm addicted to listening to those cars on the replay, exhaust's rasping and popping as they flyby. The stages are well designed, and to keep on top you really do need to keep within the confines of the track or that carefully placed stone or tree will have you grinding to a complete halt and waving goodbye to precious seconds.Overall the game is very good and well designed. There are a few niggles, but none that are detrimental from the rallying experience. In summary, time and patience to appreciate the games finer points are needed in abundance. Once a Championship is under your belt the difficulty increases and only the most dedicated will get to win the ultimate prize.

I really think some people are missing the point of this AMAZING game. It's a full blown sim. It's called 'Colin McRae Rally' not 'Colin & Friends'. Thats why you can only play AS Colin, in champ mode. Now the game is quite hard, and quite unforgiving. Not unlike Colin himself. At first you may think that the car is hard to control, fishtailing all over the place. But when you give it some time you will find that the sensitivity of the steering is SPOT ON. It gives you total control. Playing this game remindes me of the first game on PS1, or the first wipeout game. Both of these games were very hard to control at first, but with some practice you find both were amazing games.Thats what Colin McRae 3 feels like. I think we are so used to the same old stuff, when a game gives a new challenge, some of us just say 'this is crap' and don't give it a chance. Games like this take some getting used to. If you don't want a new challenge, then go buy one of the old games and remain stuck in the past. As for the rest of the game, the graphics are stunning. None of the old problems like tape at the edge of the track being solid. Now it even flaps in the wind when you snap it. The attention to detail is stunning. And the game has been tested to perfection. The pace notes are all spot on, and the sheer atmosphere of the rally is there in spades. If you don't want such a 'sim' rally game, then try the new WRC 2 Extreme. It is not quite as good as McRae, but is more arcadey in nature and still a very good game. But the hardcore rally freak will love this new McRae release. It has the x-factor. AAA stuff.

Colin McRae is the game everyone should own. Whether you like Rally games or usually play ordinary driving sims, you can't dislike this game. These graphics are so realistic for both the car and the scenery, you will find it hard to believe that you aren't really driving your way round the best rally tracks in the world. The handling is spot on and can be changed to suit your own preferences. As you progress through the Championship, you open up each of the different aspects of you car, so towards the end you can adapt every part to your own preference, which helps to assist you in you overall goal of winning the Rally Championship. This is not a game for sunday drivers,as you have to concentrate for every metre you drive; if you don't listen to your co-driver, and follow his direction to the letter, then the hedge is where you'll be. He is so realistic you turn to thank him after completing each and every stage, but then you'll remember he's not actually sitting there with you.It has a couple of different modes for 2 players, so you can race head to head or simply challenge each other to set the fastest time on the Stage of your choice. Once you have achieved your dream goal of finishing 1st in the Championship, the game goes on as you can still spend hours trying to set new laptimes for every stage of the tour. Well worth every penny you will spend on it! Buy it now and you will never look for your old driving games again, that's a promise.Well done Codemasters.

It's tricky to get this balance right. WRC is probably more accurate, but just too hard in a way that's painful, rather than rewarding of developing skill. CM3 gets it just about spot-on.It's a long way in advance of car-based pinball like Burnout, or even TOCA. These cars need to be driven, and they need to be driven well if you're going to set a vaguely competitive time. If you expect to do well or to play the Championship mode at all, then you'll be needing a wheel (I used a Driving Force). Each stage handles differently and the car needs to be set up differently for each to make the best of it. Fortunately some sensible defaults make this interesting, rather than frustrating. Not surprisingly, the Ford Focus is the best modelled car and seems to have had the most care spent on its handling. It's not the easiest to drive, but probably the most rewarding to master. As a piece of PS2 coding, it's less impressive. Background trees pop up so slowly you can count them, and the road surface looks distinctly blocky in comparison to WRC. I just didn't care though.Of all the many driving games we had over Christmas, this was the one that kept getting played.

The best rally game has finally hit PS2 and boy does it look good! It has all the playability of the first 2 with a few more features besides and the graphics are outstanding, so much so that the replay scenes are now very similar to the in-game graphics. The cars can now be damaged to a fantastic degree (try attempting to drive with only one wheel left on your car and no body panels and you'll see what I mean!!) The game also benefits from the telemetry section, which allows you to set up the car and test it out on a similar stretch of track before the race (this enables you to see how the car performs before the race begins, which saves on trial and error). In fact the only two gripes that I can find with the game is the 'cardboard cut-out'trees and shrubs and the fact that the two player game does not race the cars on the stages together, but rather you both race the same stretch solo, but simultaneously (in other words, you can't see where the other driver is on the stage in relation to you and, more importantly, can't smash into them!).All in all though a damned fine game and worthy of addition to everyone's PS2 collection.

I've only just jumped into the world of the PS2, after years of PC games and a few things on the PS1. This was one of the games I got with the console. The first thing I noticed was the graphics, which are just about as good as you're gonna get for a game like this. I hoped that with the look of the game being so good, that the gameplay didn't suffer. It doesn't.I admit that it took a few practice sessions to get the feel of the game. Fortunately I didn't find the learning curve steep at all, and quickly felt like a pro rally driver .... well, you know what I mean. The one thing that I have a minor quibble with, and the reason this review didn't get the full 5 stars rating, is the damage. The way the car can appear to slowly disintegrate around you as you crash from barrier to barrier was initially pleasing to see. However, once I'd started in the championship mode, it seemed that the damage had a lot less bearing on the handling and the performance of the car that I'd have expected. It is a minor quibble, and it's probably a good thing, the way I drive.Plenty in this to keep me entertained for a few months.

immediately playable, this game also looks amazing - some of the weather effects and background scenery are fantastic. easy to pick up but more difficult to master this is a big improvement on earlier versions of the series.it may not have official drivers and racetracks but codemasters know a thing or two about gameplay and it's this that really comes to the fore.in championship mode you get to race a three year contract as colin mcrae, fine tuning your car after each race and unlocking extra stages and secret vehicles as you progress.in stages mode meanwhile, it's a pure race against the clock as you compete on the tracks unlocked from the championship mode.there's even a 2 player spiltscreen mode to keep you entertained and after playing this game you get some idea just how it feels to make "150 decisions every minute".a great game with what looks like being a long lifespan...

Without a doubt this is the best rally ever produced and the ONLY RACING SIMULATOR in my opinion.Graphics are excellent, and most importantly the control of the car is very realistic. Car damage is also very realistic, so try to stay on the road. The only disadvantage of the game is that you can take a championship challenge only with the ford focus. But it's not a game, it's a simulator after all.Great value, many hours of gameplay, lots of unlocks and bonuses (you can even get an airplane and a hovercraft) and a must have whether you are a fun of the genre or not

I've been waiting for a decent Rally sim for the PS2, and thankfully, it's finally here! The graphics are stunning, both the details of the car and the scenery. The weather effects are great too, adding to the experience. The gameplay is almost as good as the graphics, and the little touches really finish the game off. Like after repairs in service you can feel the improvements. The career mode is probably the best part of the game, and if your not careful, might have you up late every night...

What a ride this game is, the codemasters slogan for this game is a 150 decisions a minute and this game certainly lives up to that. Great graphics great circuits and the best weather effects found on any game are all cramed into this game. battling through the rain, windscreen wipers moving up and down endlessly.all models of rallying cars are here citroen Xsara, Ford focus e.t.c the only slight nigles of this game are that Colin Mcrae is the only real driver and there are no real circuits.

I guess any game that can keep you up till 3 in the morning & still make you want more has got to be good!CM3 is just simply the best, leave all the others. It's taken the best from CM1 & CM2 & added some extra realism. If there is any complaint it's the loading times, but when you see the graphics, you know it's worth it.Normal has plenty to keep you busy, but CM3 has a hard mode & an extra hard mode, if you are a fan of this series, there is no choice, you must buy it. Excellent stuff.

2.1.2003

This is a very difficult game to master quickly. The controls and the setups are easy to get to grips with. Graphics are razor sharp and very fluid. Like i say, this game is a fanstic sim. You have to be able to drive properly, the game does not allow you to just jump in and bounce off the trees like so many other rally games. One downside is the compulsary requirement of a steering wheel. A lot for your money and a great way to drive off the tension of the day.BUY IT!!

3.11.2002

Good graphics but some more camera angles would be nice.Still not as good as WRC but close.Once you have all the cars and tracks the game becomes even better (Try the Citroen CV and then the Shogun). The handling of the cars is not as it really should be....but you learn to compensate (but should you have to?). Still like me you can Always buy WRC Extreme when That comes out.Have Fun.........

28.2.2010

I've played a fair few car games in the past, but none of them are as good as Colin Mcrae! The stages are fun, especially in Japan, and the handling is realistic and not painfully awkward, unlike quite a few racing games i could mention. Definitely a must have!
