Although whisk(e)y is usually my spirit of choice I do enjoy a G&T from time to time. Our drinks cabinet usually has some Beefeater or Bombay Sapphire tucked away but this year we have become a bit more adventurous with our gin selection and have added some Penderyn Brecon Botanicals from the Welsh distillery best known for it's whisky, some Sipsmith from London and also some Monkey 47 from the distillery in the German Black Forest. I was pleased to be invited to try this rather different sort of gin from the William Chase Distillery in Herefordshire which is produced on site from their own cider apples then adding botanicals like Juniper, Coriander, Angelica, Liquorice, Orris, Orange & Lemon peel,Hops and Elderflower. This Williams Chase Elegant Crisp Gin is a superior gin that is obviously produced by people who care about their products. It is produced in a small Carter-Head Still affectionately named “Ginny”, and it is presented in a distinctive patterned bottle which has a label with details of the batch and year of production. As for the gin itself it is definitely one gin drinkers will want to try for themselves – if you have not tried Fever Tree tonic I would suggest that it compliments the Williams Elegant gin perfectly, but perhaps also try with your regular tonic for a proper comparison with your usual gin and also try adding a slice of fresh apple to bring out the apple flavours. With Christmas just around the corner your drinks cabinet may need a bit of restocking – if you want a gin that will be a bit of a talking point amongst your guests then this Williams Elegant gin would be ideal. However, this is a strong spirit at 48 % Vol and does not taste like any gin I have tried before and I am not quite sure about it yet – I think I still personally prefer a grain based spirit to this apple one. Try before you buy if possible – four stars from me.

Personally I love apple flavour so was eager to try this gin, I also took the opportunity to invite a few friends around for a gin tasting. I couldn't taste the apple immediately and was surprised at the bitter, sharp taste when I was expecting something more fruity. Someone else tried it and could smell and taste cooking apple, and having read the blurb on the webpage I see the apples are cider apples. After this had been pointed out we all tasted it and got the cooking apple, but there was also a strong acetone like flavour which I was informed could also be from the apple skins.I found this gin a grower. To begin with I didn't like it, the first taste was horrible, but after sitting and sipping away at it for a while I actually appreciated it more. Some people in the group enjoyed it, while others didn't. It is strong so watch your measures!Top marks for the bottle though. It looks fantastic and everyone commented on how good it looked. It's the kind of bottle you would happily have out on display. The clear glass with the black frosted tree design is a really premium product. Topped off with a bow tie making it look rather distinguished.Overall, I would say try before you buy (if you can) but also be aware that the first taste may be deceptive as I found gets better as you drink it.

There's a whole world of Gin's out there beyond the well known Gordon's , Bombay Sapphire etc, and in the past 12 months, having discovered this, I simply could not go back to wasting my money on those cheaper Gin's- they just taste bland in comparison. My current favourites are Bathtub Gin, and Sipsmith's (both available from Amazon)This, like those, is a complex blend, and like them, is an entirely unique flavour. I really couldn't rate them against each other as they are so individual. What sets this apart from the start, is that the distillers have made their own apple cider, then made that into an apple vodka, and then distilled THAT into this amazing Gin.The flavours are so complex that they change in your mouth between the first sip, through to post-swallow. I even found that my second tasting, later in the day, was different again from the first?!There are floral notes, and citrus notes, and if you drink it with a slice of apple, it really enhances the delicate Apple flavour in there too.My only concern was that I might taste the licorice, because I hate licorice, however, while the addition of licorice is no doubt a contributor to the overall melody of notes, I was thankfully not able to detect it on its own.A fabulous gin definitely worth trying!!

When I first tasted Williams Chase Single Estate Gin, it was described to me as 'possibly the most complex gin in the world', and it certainly lives up to that description. It's easily the best gin I've ever had, although it's worth noting that it is somewhat stronger than many mainstream gins, with a 48% Vol. Sometimes a high alcohol content can be a drawback, and work against the overall taste, but it's not a problem here at all. Coupled with a quality tonic (I'd recommend Fever Tree) and mixed properly, it makes for an excellent drink. The price is considerably higher than you'd pay for more mainstream gins, but the premium price is very much reflected in the quality. It's worth mentioning that Williams Chase Gin isn't easy to come by in the shops, unless you happen to live near a very extensive specialist drinks retailer, or a top-end retailer such as Fortnum & Mason or Selfridges, buying it online is probably the easiest way of getting hold of a bottle for a reasonable price. I bought through Just Miniatures, and the bottle arrived quickly and extremely well packed to ensure it remained pristine throughout transit.

Awesomely elegant, this is a sophisticated gin for a sophisticated palette. At 48% proof you need about 25% less than your usual measure, and instead of lemon, use an apple slice (Granny Smiths were excellent).I tried with both my usual tonic (schweppes) and an alternative (feverfew) and am happy to say I liked both, so no need to upscale your mixer. With a couple of ice cubes to top off, this elegant gin was an incredible taste sensation. Both sweet and slightly sour, yet spicy and herbal, I really enjoyed sipping slowly to savour every flavour. It's an extraordinary mix, and one to really enjoy. There's no comparison to mass market gins. This is something else, a real joy to taste and share.Highly recommended.

Bought on recommendation as a gift, have been told it’s very nice but cannot comment from personal experience on the flavour! Nice bottle, but only 3 stars as so disappointed it did not arrive dressed with the bow as advertised which obviously would be nice, to have the finishing touch particularly as being given as a present.? Had been led to understand Chase gins do usually have this decorative touch. Cannot find anywhere to send message to see if this can be rectified?

Wow, if you like gin you'll love Chase made from Apples it has a sweetness and a smooth finish that is sublime. This is a VERY large version of the usual 70cl which at 300cl makes an amazing show piece bottle (if you have the room for it!). Very good value for money given just how much gin you get for your money. The bottle will also look beautiful in its own right by installing inside it LED lights!

This lovely, well rounded Gin made from apple juice, provides as sophisticated flavour as its well presented bottle portrays. It pairs well with high quality tonics (as recommended by other reviewers) and really does warrant its price tag. Although its price does make you reluctant to share with guests, it really does make an impression on them!Treat yourself, and your guests!

I've been a fan of Monkey 47 for the last few years but I recently tried this after seeing it recommended in Shortlist magazine. I have to say, I'm now converted. The gin has a unique apple backdrop I've not tasted in any other gins and makes a great G&T if you serve with apple instead of lemon or lime. Not the cheapest but one to savour for special occasions!

This gin has a brilliant flavour and comes in a superb bottle that will be great with dried grasses etc.It has a slightly different flavour from other gins (my second favourite is Bombay Saphire) so is quite distinctive. I have it with a slice of apple rather lemon which works well. Quite pricey but worth the money as a special treat.

I love this gin. It's not cheap but the flavours far exceed all of the mainstream better known brands. The only issue I have with amazon ad a supplier is that on every occasion I've bought from them the "Union jack bow tie" which is meant to be on the neck is missing. I guess it must be down to light fingered employees.

Seemed recklessly expensive when we first bought this but now no other gin seems worth drinking. It is in a league of its own - really fabulous. Complex, wonderful flavour that makes all the main brands taste chemical and brash. Totally recommended, despite the considerable cost.

Absolutely delicious and very refined. At 48% proof I choose to use less in a G&T as this is stranger than average for drinking with mixers. I can taste & smell the apple notes that come from the blend but also a hint of grapefruit. Really enjoyed and will buy again.

Gin makes a fantastic gift, but my only complaint is, it doesn't come with the bow as atvertised. I hope the seller sees this and sends me the bow I should have. As a gift it would look so much more special. With the bow I would have given 5 stars for everything.

11.3.2016

Fantastic gin and one that really stands out form the crowd. This gin, unlike most others is distilled from Chase's very own cider apples, refusing to buy in neutral grain spirit they really have set the benchmark with this one. Cheers!
