People thinking about buying this game are likely to come from two camps - those who have fond memories of the original and those who have never played it but have heard of its reputation as a true classic. For those returning to Baldurs Gate in this new incarnation - good news! Bioware have stuck closely to the original and have not made any real changes. This is the Enhanced Edition which includes modifications released years ago on the PC, but essentially this is the same game which came out way back in 1998. There are a few issues with finding ways to select things without a mouse but generally speaking the controls work well on the PS4 with some now familiar tools like select menus to speed things up.For those new to the game - it's time to party like its 1999!This is D&D as it used to be (in its hey day in my opinion) with 2nd Edition rules and the ever popular Forgotten Realms setting. While the simple graphics may be a shock you should appreciate that if Bioware had updated the graphics the game would not feel like the original. The pixelated animation holds its own charm but what still stands the test of time is the story telling. Each area in Baldurs Gate is filled with colourful characters and quests, alongside the main story which sees your character grow from level 1 to level 40 (theoretically). This is a classic D&D campaign you can play many times over.A slight criticism still exists in that the difficulty at 1st level is completely bonkers. With so few HP random deaths tend to frustrate no matter how often you save. I'd recommend setting the difficulty to Easy until you are off 1st level and then resetting it.If you want to see how an RPG should be written this is the benchmark by which all subsequent games should be judged. Comradeship, adventure, and steel on steel, the stuff of legends - right Boo?

The PC version of Baldurs Gate, released 1998. Is probably my favourite PC game of all time. I have completed both BG1 and BG2 several times. Mostly as a Ranger Character. It was the most immersive, atmospheric and rewarding gaming I have ever experienced. The characters, the atmosphere, the music, the storyline, the dialogue. Sheer Brilliance. A work of art. I have never played the enhanced version though. I'm 48 and I grew up playing games on computers and playing D&D with my friends. And later playing Playstation and Xbox console games, but was mostly dissatisfied with console games. They always seem Graphics over content.Baldurs Gate however, always held a special place for me.When i first saw this,I wasnt sure of wether I should buy it or not. I had not played Baldurs Gate in years. And wondered if it would convert well to console. However, I thought I'd take the plunge....And it really is superb!Ive played it on and off for about a week now. It's Very, very slick, and actually better than the original. Characters have more personality and will cast healing spells, attack, retreat etc without being prompted. Some have criticised the controls. I think, they couldnt be better. They do take some getting used to. But BG is an intense experience anyway, that requires focus and commitment. The controls are fine and work well. My one and only gripe so far, is not being able to upload your own portraits.Modern gamers may not "get" this. But if youre a fan of the original game. You will not be dispointed. Its just as good, immersive, atmospheric and brilliant as ever. Its a warm trip down memory lane. And the game still has charm. And is still just as entertaining and rewarding. Buy it!! And hopefully I'll see you in the Jovial Juggler for a Westgate Ruby Wine!

I played BG1 when it first came out and loved it but years later and of course upon hearing that a new game was coming BG3, I got the old curiosity for that world back, not just the game but all the old forgotten realms books set in this rich world. I received the game in good time and good condition and then started playing it, at first in candle keep I was a little put off, trying to figure out the PS4 controls and I wasn't sure about the graphics, then I got used to both and started to appreciate the graphics, for example the fact that many of the inns you go to have different décor and I started comparing it in my mind to more recent fantasy games like World of Warcraft...……….all I cantell you is in my head and maybe with a mixture of sentimentality and bias to the setting that I loved as a child, this is a far better game, with more depth. For example you are controlling a party, not just one character and they all interact with each other, sometimes negatively, each character has a skill set you can steer as well as their gear and a huge collection of items. The stories are good and fun to be a part of , the voice gifs of your characters can be highly amusing and the music and sound generally is excellent.Put simply a lot of people exploited a rich setting to build one of the most ambitious games ever made, they poured their love in to it. Whereas these days games seem to be made in a generic, purely commercial way, using already established design engines etc...…….just wonderful

Baldurs Gate 2 is my second favourite game of all time (the first is Tes 3 Morrowind). I have been playing BG2 since it’s initial release on PC. I have it installed on every computer and iPad and I love the game dearly. Voice acting is brilliant and Minsc will always be my favourite NCP as Jon Irenicus will always be my favourite antagonist. But I cannot play it on the Switch. I rarely connect it to a tv and it is simply too small on the Switch screen. It gives me headaches. I almost cried in despair. As this is my issue I am not taking off a star. Now if Beamdog had added zoom capabilities I would be able to play it as I could enlarge the visuals on the screen. This is a shame as having BG2 so portable is a dream,as the Switch is smaller and lighter to carry around than an iPad or laptop. The game itself runs well but I unfortunately cannot play the game in handheld mode. I cannot comment further on gameplay as I could not play it for long.EditI have read recently (September 2020) about how to zoom, so I am going to give the game another go. It will be different to play without mods but I am willing to sink several hours in to it to find out

Fan of Divinity? Pillars of Eternity? Head back to where it all started for one of the most iconic RPG series in gaming. Grab your sword and spell book, head to Baldurs Gate. These are must play games - much cheaper here than on the PS store - and have, for the most part, aged well. Dialogue options may be a bit limited by today’s standards, but outside of that you’ve RPG goodness galore. The controls work well on the pa4, load times beat the far more recent Pillars of Eternity deadfire, and there are more things to do in the game than most of us will ever see. It could - and has - teach modern games a lot in many regards. It really is a must play game if this is your genre. One note, don’t remember this from the PC version but I could be wrong, is do not play on story mode. Not ever. Difficulty is so reduced you get no game at all - you don’t need any tactics, levelling, spells, equipment, healing, etc, to beat most enemies in the game. Point, click, win, repeat. Story mode makes it an exercise in monotony.

I purchased this digitally through the Microsoft store. Baldur’s Gate 1&2 have been two of, if not my favourite games of all time. I played Baldur’s Gate back in 1998 and was straight away hooked. I must admit I was very sceptical about how this game would feel being played on a console with a controller as I have always felt it would not suit that style of play but I 100% concede that I have been proven wrong. Beamdog/Skybound Games have managed to make the game run flawlessly on console and also feel pretty effortless playing with a controller. It took me all of 10 minutes to completely concede that I was wrong.I cannot recommend these games enough to anyone that has not experienced them before.I do appreciate that some people may have a hard time with the outdated graphics (I personally still love them) but the fact is the gameplay and story are simply second to none. And the combat system still holds its own and is more engaging than most up to date RPG’s.Give this game a try. You won’t regret it.

If you plan to buy this, then do so on the understanding that it is a faithful restoration of a classic 21 year old game. It is not a remaster or re-imagining with updated graphics. It is clunky and the mechanics are outdated, but it gets under your skin in a way that modern games rarely do. And the controls work well, after some getting used to them.I spent about an hour last night replaying one section to try to keep a key character alive. It was tough and I had to get just the right combination of gear and spells, but got there eventually. In most games I'd have given up, but this kept me hooked. I'm speaking as someone without rose-tinted nostalgia specs,as although I'm very much old enough to have played it the first time around, I never did.It has been labelled a classic for a reason, so if like me you wondered what all the fuss was about, this is the perfect excuse to pick it up.

I'm glad sutch a classic has made it's way onto the ps4. In the game for the pc you could pick from a selection of characters to play as the main character from mage, cleric, paladin, fighter, sorcerer, ranger, druid to name but a few. The story is rich and diverse with plenty of skirmishes to challenge the party. Don't worry about companions for there is quite a few, watch out for minsc and his hamster (personal favourite) the main quest is to stop the lord of murder Baul's mortal son from ruling the land and bringing about a dark age for the sword coast. With plenty of side quests and things to do this game if done correctly should have you captivated for days if not weeks.I have nothing bad to say about this game and will be purchasing it as soon as it is out. Happy days

Got it relatively cheaply for GBP25, I had the pc version but never played it after the first 20-ish hours so I sold it, well, practically gave it away and good riddance.Switch version works nicely on my switch lite, but just like Pillars of Eternity it won't give the same impression compared to the fullscreen gameplay. The menus are easy to read, but if you are a pc gamer, get the pc version instead obviously, the switch menu does work but is more cumbersome than its mouse equivalent. Still, it is workable. The best thing probably is that you can store your notes (which you need) in the jewelcase. So, just like similar games like DOS, nnk, do not ever get the cheap digital, because you will regret not making notes.

Felt like i should write a review after seeing some negative ones. It appears others didnt do their research.I'm happy with my copy. It's given me the chance to play a masterpiece on console. These games are old but hold up well and I'm enjoying it. I have always wanted to play these games, i got it on the android but found it too fiddly and this I've found to be the best way to play it. The story line is incredible, i love the old school feel and theyve done well to map the controls on the controller. There is still a point and click option or you can move your characters freely with the analogue stick.Agreed £40 is steep however you are getting an adventure that will take you over a 100 hoursto complete.

These are my 2 favourite games of all time, it has been a long time since I have ventured back into the world of Baldurs Gate I was excited but also a bit worried as to how good the port would on a console. I really neednt have worried the controls overall are more user friendly then I would ever have thought absolutely top marks. As to the games themselves they are as good now as they were in the 90's, these games BG2 in particular are better than 99% of PS4 or XBox 1 games, theres no hand holding they are brutally difficult if played as intended, though you do have the option to scale the difficulty down substantially. I highly, HIGHLY recommend you buy this

I have been playing this game on my Switch Lite for the past few weeks and really enjoying it.I was one of those who played it originally on PC, so nostalgia was a major factor in picking it up. It plays very much like how I remember it, but with some quality of life improvements and extra content such as extra missions, characters etc.I wouldn't expect a graphical master piece and sometimes on the small screen it can be a little hard to pick out details. But, using the zoom function I found it perfectly playable.I deducted one star due to some bugs that still seem to be occurring even after a recent patch.Overall a great blast from the past.

i think the funniest aspect of all these "reviews" is that quite a lot of people don't know what "baldurs gate" is and keep mistaking it for the hack and slash games of the consoles, where this one was purely only the PC market and built the way for the RPGs to come, and Bioware. This game should either sell itself like the original FF7 when steam launched their edition, or not. I doubt you'll find many new fans of this genre, it's as old as the modern internet itself. Amazon had only started in the UK when this came out and at the time "gameplay" and "play.com" were where you bought games from online.

This isn't a 'new game', it's a re-release of a 21 year old game so if you are expecting top end graphics you're going to be disappointed. It is an excellent rpg, however, with enormous depth and replayability. A reviewer above suggested it wasn't an Enhanced Edition as nothing had been enhanced and his review is very misleading. The Enhanced Edition contains all the add on expansions such as the Tales of the Sword Coast release as well as further add ons such as the Siege of Dragonspear and Black Pits campaigns. New characters have been added to the game, so very much an Enhanced Edition.
