On first first impressions this game looks great, sounds great and generally plays great. Many people I assume would have bought this game purely on the strength of the X-Box version which was very slick indeed, and you'll be forgiven for thinking that the game is exactly the same (unless you've played the X-Box version) truth is that there are some slight changes to the level structure in places and although it plays almost identically, the sharp crystal graphics of the X-Box look slightly dull on this platform. All this is a minor issue, especially if you haven't seen the X-Box running this game, because i'd heard it on good authority that this version wasn't worth the bother and in fact it has scubbed up very nicely indeed. You are Sam Fisher, drafted in by the NSA (National Security Agency) to investigate the disappearance of two CIA operatives. As a spearhead of the new intiative by the NSA "Splinter Cell". You embark on a series of missions in which you find that there is more to the vanishing of the afore mentioned CIA operatives than meets the eye. The missions, which at first are not too taxing but in time become progressivly more difficult, are beautifully laid out. This to some (myself included) will appear to be a plus point at first but you feel as though as the game goes on the linier stucture of the levels is slightly frustrating and you feel as though you should have a more interactive role with the surrounding scenery, multiple paths would've been nice.I liked the fact that this game is based around stealth and the range of moves all adds to the effect of really evading the enemy through skill rather than them just not having good enough A.I to locate you. It's more realistic that you can be located through sound and movement through vegetation, than some previous stealth games in which it made no difference what environment you were moving through. The light dark effect is good but also a little unbelievable at times, we all know that an overhead light in a dark corridor will illuminate more than just the area directly below it, but then again who cares because it's all part of the fun of hiding in the dark.Weaponry is a little limited but you soon forget this as there are many different gadgets to use and fire out of your multi-purpose launcher. I thought the interactive lock-picking was a nice touch along with fancy thermal imaging, which was nice to look at but most of the time a bit redundant (I thought you'd be able to see people through walls which evidently you can't). Bashing people over the head was pretty cool too but lost its fun after a while, you still have to use it practically though. Human sheilds, interrogation, forced co-operation, you name it you can do it, all not at the same time dissapointingly but you are promted when and when not to do these things. All in all I loved this game and all the things which are maybe not so well done in this game get lost in the excitement of actually playing the thing. If you are looking for a shoot'em'up then this aint it, sometimes you fail the mission for killing anyone, but if you want something to get your girlfriend all puzzled as to why you're bothering to sit doing nothing for five minutes in a dark corner, this is your cookie.Sam Fisher, well 'ard.

Splinter Cell is for my money the first really solid title in the Tom Clancy range. Obviously marketed as a rival to the stealth and cinematics crown held by Metal Gear Solid 2, S.C. pitches itself at the audience with a far less bizarre, convoluted and other-worldly bent and gets straight to the point launching you into the world of special forces/espionage hard-nut Sam Fisher. The game ingratiates itself to you immediately by giving you a brief but effective tutorial allowing you to perform each of Sam’s basic abilities and filling in some of the story line as you go. From the outset you will be gripped by just how cool Sam looks and sounds (thanks to the vocal talents of Michael Ironside). His black suit, night vision gear and cat-like grace make Raiden from MGS2 look like a wet ponce! The different athletic manoeuvres and range of equipment on offer from the outset of the game make it clear that there will be numerous paths to each goal and how you achieve them is up to you. Once into the proper missions, for the most part this seems to be true. Although the beautifully drawn, breathtakingly textured locations are basically linear (a la Max Payne and the Getaway) you can play it in your own style. You can choose to play carefully, shooting out the lights, keeping yourself well hidden and incapacitating your foes without actually killing them, or you can play risky revealing your position to deal out brutal head shots and using your oponents as human shields to inflict even more casualties. The choice is yours. The learning curve is gentle but not annoyingly easy. From the outset you can tell that the makers of the game want you to complete it, they don’t want you to be stuck on one bit for three months, get fed up and exchange it for Vice City! As your tasks become slightly more complex, it is to the developers credit that they have managed to bring in a bit of variety. A game which has little cut-scene padding and is basically just sneak from point A to B laying out anyone who gets in your way could be boring but not so with Splinter Cell. One mission may involve a quick no-holds barred infiltration, while in the next the story line may preclude you from killing anyone. Coupled with this the environments are pleasantly varied and much of the scenery can be interated with. This game demonstrates the serious next gen physics which we have now come to expect from games.I think, however that the ultimate selling point of this game is gadgets. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a thrilling array of toys in a game. From remote control guns, CCTV cameras and proximity mines to Sam’s multi-purpose assault rifle, camera jammer, rappelling rope and night vision, there is enough here to keep James Bond up at night... sweating.I am trying to think of something bad to say about S.C. to wind this up, but as I can’t I shall leave you by saying that this is indeed MGS2 without all the padding. It’s fun from start to finish, the controls feel like second nature in a matter of minutes and it contains some of the best voice acting I’ve heard in a game for a while. It is cool. Very cool. If you are serious about your PS2 you need to play this one through.

This is based on a playthrough of the first two titles in this compilation, and it must be said that this HD collection is, based on the oldest title, a remarkable piece of work that has NOT been a shoddy, speedily developed bit of software. Especially when comparisons are made to the Prince of Persia Trilogy (very good games, but ports were just not up there in visuals and sound), this collection can be said to be a good one that is somewhat between the Tomb Raider Trilogy (fantastic conversion process there) and The Sly Trilogy (near perfection, even with Move games which you won't play again after you get x amount of trophies. Within five minutes). All in all,a good HD trilogy collection.Let me break this down into Visuals, Sound and GameplayVisuals:Splinter Cell - As can be expected from a game that is almost ten years old, the visuals are not comparable to the almighty Uncharted. However, the visuals are crystal clear and you can tell whether you are looking at a drunk or an automated machine gun of death. Character models are good for the most part, though the lip movements are laughable by today's standards. However, as said, this is an old title, and with that in mind the visuals are quite good.Pandora Tomorrow - A big improvement on the first game, and clearly the mo-cap is far more better implemented for this new release. Shadows, lighting and animations are all on top-form.Audio:Splinter Cell - Much better than POP. No overly SHOUTY guards or artificially loud sound effects. How I remember them on PS2, which can't be said for POP before you adjust the sound settings!Pandora Tomorrow - Excellent: speech, crunching and shooting sounds are as they should be.Gameplay:Splinter Cell - Classic stealth action, from sneaking past heavily armed guards to knocking them out with surveillance cameras. Probably the most tension to be found in any game outside of a Metal Gear Solid title.Pandora Tomorrow - A good evolution of what came in the first game. Little things such as being able to open a door without automatically standing up and blowing your cover is one brilliant update to the formula. So based on the first two games, go get!

If you're into your spy games, Splinter Cell won't disappoint.Plot: You play as a shadow sitting, silent shooting Sam Fisher whose job is to save the world from launching in to the next world war. There are ten missions in total with each one having a main goal and then smaller objectives being given to you while you play along. Each mission then adds to the overall plot of the game.Graphics: They are starting to show their age now. I found the way Sam jumped sometimes looked a little blocky but again that's just down to age.Gameplay: Solid spy action involving you hiding in shadows and always timing your next step just right.I did have a couple of problems with the gameplay though, the first being the lack of choice being given about lights as hardly any of them seemed to have switches to use. Most of the time, even if you're within touching distance of a bulb, you will still need to shoot it out.The other problem I had was with objects like cardboard boxes. No I haven't suddenly developed hatred towards cardboard rather the distance I can get to one. You would think with most objects, you could either walk over them or at least get closed to them but with quite a few things, there was an invisible wall stopping me from getting within two feet of them.Controls: It took me a little while longer (compared to most games) for me to get used to the controls of Splinter Cell. They are well laid out just not like most games.Lifespan: Splinter Cell took me just under 17 hours so it's a fairly lengthy game. I'm guessing for a gamer that's used to these sorts of games then you could probably get it down to the 10 hour mark as I spent a lot of time getting sent back to checkpoints to learn from my mistakes.Overall: Splinter Cell is a very solid 4/5 as although it's starting to show its age, it's still a game that's well worth a play.

This is game that caught my eye right from the start! There have been lots of quality action games brought uot in the recent years. Games like Soldier of Fortune, Medal of Honour, Delta Force etc. They all have one thing in common though. You have to kill a ridiculous amount of enemies. Even in realistic games like Raven Shield the amount of kills you notch up is bordering on the stupid. This is a game with a difference. Although there is still plenty of killikn to be done, the game concentrates mainly on the stealth aspect. More evidence to this is the limited ammo power you have. In the first few stages the only thing you are armed with is your gun.Shooting is quite hard but most of the shooting is done under the cover of darkness so you have plenty of time to take aim. The game in itself is not an easy one. If you decide to kill an enemy (which may not always be the appropriate action) you have to make damn sure that you hide the bodies so that you wont give your cover away. Of course one of the main attractions of this game is the variety of actions you can take. Particularly interesting is the use of your opponents for opening doors and even as a shield. As i mentioned before this is not a simple game so don't be suprised if you find yourself returning to the beginning of levels in order to correct a mistake or hide a body you forgot about. What impresses me the most is the fact that the control of the main character is not nearly as hard as I had expected and the variety of movements seem to have been dealt with very well indeed. I have to say that this must be one of the best games I have ever played and I can't wait for the sequel. If this game is anything to go by it is going to be outstanding!!!

Splinter Cell puts you in the role of an American secret agent, Sam Fisher, working for a special operations agency, Third Echelon. This game allows you to do everything you can imagine that a secret agent would do. There is a range of amazing gadgets to use, which adds to the experience of the superb gameplay. There are optical cables that allow you to see through to the other side of doors, lock picks, which can be used to unlock certain doors and an assault rifle with capabilities such as stunning, using grenades and also just for killing enemies. The game also allows a much greater control over the character than most games offer. This means that the environment can be used to an advantage,as he can climb on pipes, and use the walls to springboard himself onto higher ledges or platforms. The developers have thought of everything, which makes this one of the most realistic games around. However this results in losing health more rapidly than other games, which can be fixed by medical kits, which are found at different places on various missions. Another backdrop is, where you could obtain ammo from dead enemies in other games, you cannot with Splinter Cell, and unlike medical kits there are very few ammo packages on missions. This means that on most missions the ammo you enter with, is all you've got, so you have to ration you're ammo very carefully.Everything about this game, such as the stealth aspect and the many gadgets to use more than make up for the few glitches in the game, and although the story isn't the best around it does compliment the gameplay, which is what makes this game a 'must have' for all gamers!

It seems that Ubisoft's stealth adventure Splinter Cell will never be able to avoid the inevitable comparisons with Konami's Metal Gear Solid series. Having played and enjoyed both, I can say that Splinter Cell deserves to be held up there with the finest games of this genre on merit.Playing as Sam Fisher (an undercover operative for the 'Third Echelon'), your job is to infiltrate various locations around the world, drawing as little attention to yourself as possible. The plot itself involves the Georgian President operating with rogue Chinese & Russian radicals to wage war on the USA and it is your mission to prevent them from succeeding. In some cases, the storyline seems a little true to life (The war on terror,American soldiers being executed) which may leave some people feeling a little bit uneasy. Some levels are more stealth orientated than others - it is possible to get around certain parts of the game with all guns blazing once the alarms have been deactivated (if that is more your type of thing). Other parts require you to avoid tripping any alarms which involves hiding dead bodies, using the sniper rifle, interrogating the enemy etc.In summary, Splinter Cell is a fine example of a stealth adventure game and is very innovative throughout. There are ten levels that are progressively more difficult to overcome - if I have one gripe it would be that towards the end of the game, there is an element of deja vu. I can highly reccommend this to anyone with a PS2 who enjoys a bit of a challenge and as a technical achievement it is up there with the best on the platform, including MGS2.

This is a great game for anyone who likes stealth and espionage. Creeping around embassies, CIA headquarters, burning buildings and even an oil rig, the game play is varied and challenging with a progressive learning curve.A lot of the time, you're sneaking around and often, triggering alarms or causing a fatality can end the mission, so you have to be careful. Fortunately, there are no rules against bashing people over the head, then hiding the body in a store cupboard which is a particularly satisfying way of disposing of the enemy. The game has a lot of elements of MGS2 but loses some of the more frustrating aspects - you can hang over the edge of a wall or ledge indefinitely without losing your grip, and unconscious enemies don't jump back to life and shoot you. There are also some pretty nifty moves, such as zooming down zip cords or my particular favourite - jumping up and wedging yourself between two walls with your legs (from where, you can launch a devestating attack on your enemy below). The game is thoroughly absorbing, with the checkpoints and save points well spaced so you don't get /too/ frustrated when you die in between. If I had any criticism, it's that perhaps the gameplay is slightly too linear - there doesn't seem to be a lot of replay value (like MGS' dog tags or Hitman's 'Silent Assassin' rating) but it will probably take experienced gamers a few solid days to complete.

Wow. I was so pleased when i bought this game. I went straight to the training mission and was immediately engrossed with the technical but relatively easy gameplay. The controls are just off standard. The left analogue is movement but doesn't allow strafing. The right analogue is the camera angle NOT where your looking. However, the rest of the movements are simple combinations from there on in. And watch out for lock picking (my favourite part). The graphics are exempelary with smooth movement of all characters and the film sequences are at times almost real. But the best thing about this game is the enemy AI. At times they may be 6 inches from you and not notice you but that is part of the game. They are effiecient soldiers and when searching for you will do so thoroughly, you maybe hanging off a ledge or on a platform outside a window and they will look there just incase. The emphasis of this game though if definately on stealth. Although games like Metal Gear have gone for this stealth style, shooting every living thing can get you through many levels. I have tried the "blast-everything-that-moves" method and was killed within minutes or ran out of ammo. Yet i quite easily passed missions when i killed relatively few people and stuck to operation guidelines. In summary, the best tactical stealth game on the market.

I dont no what these people are on about. They obviously dont no how to play splinter cell. Splinter cell is the stealth game of all stealth games.I wasnt expecting much from this as it was the first splinter cell and i had already completed pandoras tomorrow and played chaos theory. It is just as good as both of them. The only difference is, is in chaos theory you got a few more gadgets and moves. I thought stealth on this one was harder than both pandoras and chaos theory and in my opinion thats a good thing. The harder the better in this kinda game i reckon.I love splinter cell. My patience is really bad with games like metal gear solid and stuff but for some reason splinter cell i get into so much.Everything you do you need concerntration and constant focus if you wanna play it properly. Its amazing. I love this game. Graphics are top notch and the story lines are cool and the cuts scenes are nice and the game play is cool but you gotta be gentle with that joypad so no one hears you.You think you like stealth games then get this or one of the splinter cell games. I think this one is the hardest out of the 3 but there all really good.

Splinter cell is an excellent game where you are playing as a guy names Sam Fisher who is a splinter cell. What do you have 2 do? Basicly you have to find out about some guy who is very important and his body guards. He is running some stuff that could cause military outbreak and war. You have to stop this from happening. The levels are creepy and some of the levels it is just almost pure silent. You may suddenly hear someone and almost jump out of your skin! Also it wouldn't be a good idea to kill all the bad guys as you may need to interrogate them to get codes, use their eyes as retinal scanners to get through doors, or even just use them as shields as the enemy won't want to hurt their own team mates! You can rapple down walls, shoot through glass hang above an unsuspecting enemy and jump on them. If you like stealth and action games then this is for you if you don't then you will probably still like it. Although i haven't played the sequel yet i am going to buy it but make sure you own this game!

Hello! I wasn't sure whether to rate this as 4 or 5 stars, because it depends on what sort of game you like - but if you're into stealth, gadgets, amazing locations, and tense atmosphere, then I would strongly recommend this game. It has out-of-this-world realism and fantastic lighting, AI who actually seem to have an IQ of over 20 and, (maybe best of all) a camera which can go at any angle you want, using the right joystick. The plot is good, and the levels are huge, which makes up for the fact there are only ten. This is easily the greatest Tom Clancy title to date!Bad Points:1. It would probably be more satisfying if there was a higher range of weaponary - a few sniper rifles, a knife,a silenced MP5 maybe? The pistol gets very monotonous after a while..2. A hell of a lot of patience is required, although it is seriously worth it.3. A slightly better soundtrack would be good - although the music is very "atmospheric" a beat would be good!HOPE YOU FOUND THIS USEFUL!!!!!!!!

This game is excellent. There is a plot involved, the usual post-cold war guff about various terrorist organisations trying to take on the world. But the plot is trivial, the actual game play is where this game excels. The game has a tremendous atmosphere, assisted by excellent graphics and sound effects. every foot step you make sounds like an explosion as you try to sneak past a guard. The AI is excellent, reacting to sounds, physical disturbances (bodies, open doors etc) and even your shadow. In order to beat the AI you really have to have your wits about you and use the terrain to your advantage,as if you engage in combat things tend to go downhill quickly.Anybody looking for a gun toting max payne type of game will be disappointed as although there is plenty opportunity for combat the idea is to avoid it as ammunition and weapons are rare and are designed only to be used as a last resort. Any fans of the original metal gear solid will enjoy this game.

i dont know about you, but i waited for this title eversince i have learned that they will be remastered. for anyone that does not know the splintercell titles, this is as good as it gets in single player stealth shooter/adventure. i have never played any other game that made me literally hold my breath in excitement about being disocvered or not. dont get this wrong, but you should try not to shoot at all, as shooting means you are not stealth. the more effective you manage to stay stealth the easier it will be for you, however, at times you do not have a choice. there are hours of gameplay in each game, and if i remember correctly,i played those games at least twice in the past years.the disc contains the first three splinter cell titles originally released by ubi on ps2 and xbox, but the graphics and sounds are absolutely amazing compared to the originals games. great fun, great graphic, great sound (5.1) , full amount of stars !

In relation to original review below, patch 1.01 has been released that resolves the control issue. Hopefully it will also resolve the corrupted save issue. But I have changed the score to 4/5.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you like me and many others are accustomed to playing games using an inverted Y axis, then stay clear - for now at least. In the PS2 version and others you could select this control method. Ubisoft in their infinite wisdom have seen fit to remove this, which is a real shame as the games look good from what I've managed to play, but having to re-program my brain to change the way I look up or down in a game is like learning to write with your opposite hand. So until this very simple issue is fixed I can only offer 1 solitary star as the game is for me ruined by this simple oversight.
