Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (henceforth referred to as TMS) is one of those wonderful games that shouldnt work but somehow manage to work just fine. Originally named Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem this game is a collaboration between Atlus and Nintendo crossing the aforementioned series. After a lot of confusion about whether this game will lean more towards the SMT side or the FE side we finally got a product that nobody was expecting and despite all the criticism the game got regarding its style im happy to report that this game is (mostly) a resounding success. Since I dont like to sing the praises of a game/movie throughout (the entirety of) my reviews I want to focus one why this game ISN'T perfect for me,and why it doesnt get a 5/5. In general, I have three criticisms of this game:Graphics-------------First, I would like some time to explain the difference between artstyle and graphics. Style/Artstyle is how the game is presented to us, flashy colors, fonts, menu layouts etc. In this department TMS is spectacular, the game is brimming with style and does a phenomenal job of sucking the player into its flashy japanese pop idol world (more on that later). This is not what Im criticizing, what Im referring to are the graphics, the textures, the animations. Sadly its in this department where I wish Atlus had spend more time on making the game look better. As is usual for JRPGs the combat looks great with nice textures, particle effects and animations. But its everything outside of this that fails to impress. Certain dungeons look like horrifying copy/paste jobs featuring ugly textures and the likes. Dont get me wrong, this is not something game breaking, and by far not my biggest gripe with the game; and yes, I am well aware that the Wii U is no graphical powerhouse. But games like Xenoblade Chronicles X have shown us what the Wii U is capable of, and I believe that, in this department, Atlus didnt go all in. I have to give special mention to the anime scenes, they are breathtaking.Story--------Now, I dont really want to spoil anything for anyone, so Im only going to explain my criticism of the story on a superficial level. The story is centered around a young guy called Itsuki who, alongside his best (?) friend Tsubasa, decides to join a talent agency because he wishes to accompany her on her journey on becoming a world class idol. Quickly (within the first 5 mins) the two are thrown into a world were evil "spirits" called mirages try to steal peoples "Performas" (no not Personas, I see what you did there Atlus) which sort of represent the inner creative thinker within all of us (or...something like that). As it turns out, these Mirages (or at least the more dangerous ones) happen to be characters from the Fire Emblem universe. Why these characters are now in the real world, and why they want to steal the performas....well, thats never really explained (unless I missed it during my roughly 47 hours with the game). Soon, Itsuki and Tsubasa meet up with Chrom and Caeda (protagonists from Fire Emblem Awakening and Fire Emblem 1/Shadow Dragon respectively) and soon everyone in your party will keep partnering up with more FE characters to stop the evil mirages. The story doesnt really advance much further with this FE theme and the story has next to no twists nor turns sooo...sorry for spoiling about 80% of the game, because this is literally most of the story right there. For Persona/SMT fans this is probably rather disappointing because of the intricate and engaging stories these games usually have, but whats there isnt bad per se, its merely outrageously mediocre. Sadly, the bad storyline is further shown by the...Characters---------------Most SMT/Persona games have always had a slew of interesting, albeit a little cliched, characters that you could grow very attached to. When I was playing Persona 4 I was genuinely interested in helping Kanji, or Rise or Yukiko. Here, there is none of that. There are about 9 characters with whom you interact with on a constant basis and most of them just plain suck. Lets go over some of them just to illustrate. I will be going into a side mission or two here to illustrate my point, so slight spoiler alert. Tsubasa for instance is incredibly boring and annoying. She is your typical "goody-goody", naive, outright stupid, big-breasted female lead whose sole purpose it is to appear nervous. It doesnt help that her side missions are also painful to play through. In one mission she has to learn how to become more seductive, aloof and playful when it comes to guys for a role she is going to play on TV, so what do you do to help her with that? You realize that this type of behavior is similar to what cats do and so you go out looking for a specific cat in Shibuya. After finding the cat, sitting down, and staring at it for HOURS she learned the meaning of what being aloof, playful and all that other stuff is. And this is not the worst in the game! Another character (the last one you get in the game) has a side mission where you, the main character, has to teach him that he needs to eat. You read that right, you have to teach him how to eat. As in, food. Normal food. Not special food. Just food. Why? Because up until this point his manager had always taken care of this stuff for him (logic thrown out the window)....Admittedly, this was by far the dumbest mission in the entire game, but still... Other characters such as Tiki (from FE) and Mamori (not a spoiler...she is on the damn front cover of the game) exist solely to call you "big brother", be cute, appear super innocent and just pose as this games token lolita characters, and I havent even gotten to Barry...the fat guy who is in love with the 8 (?) year old Mamori and loves her and all her singing, and is super into anime.Granted, there are a few good characters, Touma, Kiria and Ellie come to mind (and to a lesser degree Maiko), but even they are nothing special. But at least their missions and personalities dont make me want to gag. And then theres the Fire Emblem cast! Those should be good, right? Well, maybe? They could be if the developers had cared to give them more than two pages of dialogue. As an incredible FE fan its very disheartening to see them barely utilize these characters.Sound/Music-------------------Finally, lets get to the games strong points. The music is definitely a highlight here, and it better have been considering how music and idols are at the center of this game. And even though I am not a huge J-POP fan myself, I couldnt help but hum the tunes even when I wasnt playing. They are really well done and especially the last song in the game was especially moving to me as an FE fan. There isnt much to say here other than the fact that the music is near perfect. I highly recommend you check out "Reincarnation" and "Black Rain".Gameplay--------------Ive saved the best for last. The gameplay is undoubtedly the reason to buy this game. If you have ever played a SMT/Persona game you will immediately be familiar with this games system. For those unfamiliar, let me give you a little rundown. This games combat is turn-based and, out of your 7-man team, youve always got 3 on the field. Basically all fights boil down to you exploiting an enemies weakness, either by using the correct magic, or using the right weapon (FEs weapons triangle makes an appearance here). What sets this game apart is what happens when you hit an enemies weakness. When you do that a session starts. Basically, every character has some passive skills which allow them to follow up a certain attack with one of their own. For instance, if Itsuki uses his sword to attack the weakness of an enemy, and Tsubasa has the passive ability "Sword - Wind" then she will attack that enemy with a wind attack (at no extra cost) because Itsukis sword attack triggered her passive ability. If Touma has the ability "Wind - Lance" then Tsubasas wind attack will have triggered Toumas lance attack, and so on a so forth. This creates a chain of up to 7 attacks which can cause an incredible amount of damage. This is a session.Remember those side missions I mentioned earlier? Some of them might be a chore but they are very useful as almost every side mission either unlocks an ad-lib performance or a duo art. An ad-lib performance triggers randomly instead of the attack you just selected. For instance, if I am lucky, after selecting Itsukis sword attack and starting the attack, the attack will switch to a different, farm more powerful sword attack called "firm resolve" which may also end up hitting all other enemies, and not just the one I selected. Additionally, when you have a session of more than 3 characters (before you select an attack the game shows you which session will occur) there is a possibility of you being allowed to activate a duo art were two characters that are particularly in sync with each other can launch overwhelmingly powerful attacks against one or all the enemies. The cool thing is that these duo arts can trigger another session with a potential second duo art. With 7 characters you could supposedly get a total of 21 attacks (if you are lucky and get 3 duo arts in a row, my record is 18).The combat may sound confusing, and I hope I was able to explain it somewhat well here, and I havent even gotten into being able to switch characters during fights, items, weapons (and upgrading these), gaining skills etc. Im not going to go into these as those elements arent what makes this game so special. But rest assured, the combat, and everything surrounding it is absolutely stellar. If you have any questions, just post it underneath this review.Final thoughts-------------------Three large(-ish?) complaints and only two positives? How can you justify a 4/5? Easy, because the story isnt horrible, and neither are the characters, and the gameplay is just so perfectly fun. These scores arent obtained mathematically, they are a reflection of how much fun I had with the game, and I have to say that despite its weaknesses, I absolutely adored TMS. So for whom is this game? If you enjoy the SMT and Persona games (or RPGs in general) then you will greatly enjoy this game. If you absolutely despise RPGs and the whole J-POP stuff then this game isnt for you. I am not a big J-POP fan, yet I decided to just let the game draw me into its wonderfully strange world and it was a blast. Sadly the Fire Emblem elements werent particularly well established nor utilized. The weapons are from Fire Emblem, as well as some characters, though I have to admit that I am a little put off by the choice in characters. I have played every FE game in existence (even the japanese only ones) and it pains me a little that they chose the characters from the two games which, arguably, have the weakest characterization and storylines. Had I had the chance to fight alongside Ike and the rest of the Tellius crew together with Sigurd and company from Fire Emblem 4 and 5, I would have been ecstatic. But whats here is fine too.

I'm a massive fan of the Persona series, and this plays more like the Persona series and I think that's why i'm enjoying it so much. The graphics are fantastic for the Wii U, especially the anime cut-scenes that are incorporated within the game at certain points. The music as well has been very smartly chosen by the developers, especially with it being such a massive part of the story in the game with it focusing on the idol industry.Battle system is crisp and solid, the only thing that is slightly annoying is that there are not any subtitles for when in battle, a slight niggle when your engrossed in a battle and the characters are saying something and you can't understand them.(No English audio available in the game, all subtitles which isn't a problem for me personally). The battle system also has a few unique parts to it with the 'Ad-libs' but I won't spoil those for you as it's quite satisfying when one of these moments happens randomly in the battles for you :)All in all I can't recommend this game enough, if your looking for a Persona style fix whilst we wait for P5, then i'd say purchase this game, i'm having an absolute blast on it so far, it's a great game that feels fun and fresh.

I am a big fan of ATLUS and I love all the PERSONA games. I had been waiting for TOKYO MIRAGE SESSIONS FE for a long time, for years in fact , when it was announced as 'Shin Megami x Fire Emblem', it has taken so long and I was afraid I was going to be disappointed - I am however pleasantly surprised. When this game did finally arrive I wasn't expecting much, but they've managed to cram in a fun story , great gameplay, sexy anime visuals and great sound. The battle system is a lot of fun, and its a shame there aren't more games like this on the WiiU in Europe, the console would've been a bigger success had there been. You take on the role of Itsuki and you join forces with characters from another successful game series (FIRE EMBLEM)who have arrived in modern day Tokyo in the form of 'Mirages' - lots of action ensues as a whole live TV show cast and its audience members are swept into another dimension. Itsuki and friends investigate and have to save Tokyo. It's more Shin Megami than Fire Emblem however that is a good thing as fans will be pleased. If you have a WiiU you must get this game its excellent.

*Bought digitally*If you generally like Persona games, you will like this game a lot. It's true that in the end the game is not exactly that Fire Emblem Vs Shin Megami Tensei game we were all expecting but it's totally appealing. The game is a bit slow to start, although not like Xenoblade Chronicles X (as an example). Also, it could be said that the overall game narrative is not overly exciting and that the Unity notifications can get annoying. However, once you start to play the games for a few hours you will easily notice a lot of positive points. The world has a beautiful design, the character models are also looking very good, it has an AMAZING vocal sountrack, the combat system is one of the most innovative and varied in years, lots of dungeons with great puzzles and really great side quests. All in all, a very nice surprise.

Didn't know if I was gong to like this, took a punt because there aren't many RPG games on WiiU and I enjoyed Persona 4 Golden on PS Vita and thought this sounded similar, which is is, very much. The graphics and gameplay is actually very good fun, a little more action than P4G and less dialogue, but the colourful visuals are a joy to see. Much to my surprise I actually really like the music, which is not my thing at all, but works perfectly here. While not the best example, the Wi U dual screen is used quite well, but it's not possible to play on the gamepad only, which is a Wii U feature is always liked.Only real criticism with the game is that there is not much Fire Emblem here, with just the characters appearing as kind of cameos, it is much more of a Persona game in every other respect.

Speaking as a Persona fan, I can highly recommend this game. Whilst my FE knowledge is limited, I believe there's plenty of draws including the weapon and class system for those fans, but this is a Persona game at heart and in story. Whilst being cheesy, the game still delivers powerful moments and the humorous dialogue has translated well into English - something that not all Jrpgs do well. I'm currently 30 hours in and from what I understand I'm midway into the story. I'm still figuring out new aspects of the battle system and having new things unlocked - which is great because it stops the combat from becoming too repetitive. As for unlock freaks, there are PLENTY of costumes available IN-GAME (as well as a few dlc)and loads of side-quests/requests.

Great game that combines the Shin Megami battle gameplay with Fire Emblem elements very accurately. The game keeps throwing new elements at you the more you play it. The battles are challenging and make you think before you take action. The world is very colorful and the models and animations are better than I expected. It's kind of a waste that all of this is pushed forward by a not very appealing theme, the japanease idol stuff, something more dark like the Shin Megami series combined with the fantasy setting of Fire Emblem would have been a better fit. Despite that, you can still enjoy the story, at the end you grow to like the characters.

This is an fantastic game in every way !! The story is very exciting and fun and the battle elements are very powerful. The WiiU is such a great console and works very well with this game using the Gamepad as a map and a place where you can review your characters skills and recieve and send game messages to the other characters.I love the way you can look round the streets of Tokyo to visit the different areas of the game.Try it, you wont be disapointed. I feel the game is lovingly made and has so much to offer, At present I have been playing on it for over 6 hours and have only just scratched the surface. A true Classic.
